Lily Pictures Part 2

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Mainiac I think I neeeeeed 'Corsage' too. Where did you find it please?

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Pard, what is the deal with those buds hanging over the open flowers on the "weird bud placement" pic? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6060687
Are they actually secondaries, or just a temporary (this season) anomaly or . . . ?

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Lefty-- no, they were not secondary buds. The lower buds spiraled tightly around to make a tight knit bunch before the stem extended upward carrying the remaining few buds. I have had several seedlings from Cascade perform like this. I don't think it is considered a desirable trait. Anyway, I took the photo in 2006 and the lily did not return after that. Survival of the fittest around here...

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Lily Garden has had 'Meriweather' in the past. That's where I got mine.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Corsage is darling.

Poland, ME

I MAY know someone who might have Corsage in the fall. I will ask... :)

There are a number of page headings but this starts you at number one.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

OMG Tracy those are gorgeous!!!! Thank you but at the same time I'm cursing you! My WISH LIST just got alot longer! ^_^

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

Tracey...Amazing! Surprised my computer didn't short out from the puddle of drool.
I swore, promised and insisted I was not going to buy ANY new bulbs this spring. I had several that didn't bloom last year (so they will be new to me this year). Plus I placed two orders for bulbs last fall which are happily sleeping in the garage (and they will all be new). Along with all the ones that did bloom that I dug up to winter over. But like Pixie62560, I compiled two new lists from viewing your pics, one list of "must gets" and one list of "see if they already are among the sleepings". I must be out of my mind since all but the asiatics have to be dug up and stored.
Faraway & Buggy PLEASE shut me off!!!

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Ha! You think Mag's lily slide show is nice, you ought to see her gardens in person! They are wonderful!! :) And best of all, I get to call Tracey my friend! :)

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

You guys are too sweet. I had shown a few of you my pages, but I thought since I'd been around a while, that I might just as well come clean.

Ticker you are too good to me. My gardens are an unorganized weedy mess that I love to call my own, most days ;)

The archive is the only way to keep myself from buying the same lily over and over again. I did that for a while you know. It's these snow covered winters that did it to me "Do I have that one or don't I?" (while looking and drooling over catalogs)

"Just in case I don't have it, I better get it"

Ugh!

Chocolate, to dig up asiatics, oh my gosh! What dedication!

And Ticker now I just have to see your gardens;) I can only imagine how lovely with your fine taste.

And Pixie, I think winter is the perfect time for wishing....don't you? ^_^

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

It's truly inconceivable to me how gorgeous your gardens must be in reality...I believe we would all be in awe of the beauty you call your weedy mess...LOL
Just to clarify, the asiatics stay...all else gets dug up

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Oh good, sorry,Chocolate, I misread. Whew! I bet you'd love those nice Canadian Prairie asiatic lilies. They have some really nice flower forms.

Digging up lilies would be a mess here. I think chopping lily stalks is hard work. Chop lily-alcohol swipe the blade-chop lily-alcohol swipe the blade and so on. But dig, dig, dig.....I'm a bad guesser I have found when I do dig. I decided last year after hearing that horrifying crrrrunch sound, that you know those fish finder things that fisherpeople use to locate fish under water? I need to make a lily bulb finder device that "looks" under soil.

You know I like those tall lilies best as to draw attention away from all of the dandelion crop I have here. The roots all go to China, so there is no hope.

Your welcome here anytime. Just tell me before you come so I can weed a little ^_^

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Thanks for sharing all the lovely photos everyone! Tracey, do you have just one of most of your lilies or do you grow them in multiples? How far apart do you have them planted? Guess what I'm really wondering is how large is your garden? I'm out of room but that didn't stop me from ordering a lot of new ones yesterday from Happy Holler Gardens. Have any of you ordered from them? Most of the ones I ordered were under $2 and I will have to grow them in pots. At that price, I won't feel too bad if I only get one year's bloom out of them.

Susan

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Susan, mostly I have one of each, until they multiply, depending on the variety. And as I said before, I used to fall in love with the same lily all over again, so... in those cases I have multiples. If I feel sorry for a favorite at the end of the season at a greenhouse sale, I'll buy another.

The place I garden on has between 3/4 acre and one acre. The grass here is becoming less and less, I'm sure some of you know what I am talking about. Lol! I buy from all over but prefer the growers and most often buy from them directly.

I had a whole deck full of potted lilies last year, some of which I gave away at work and a few I planted in the garden. Sharing lilies with friends is fun too. It makes room for more.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Impressive lily accumulation & nice display site magnolialover.

So that brings me to a couple of questions. What size pots do you use and, assuming large enough pots, why would you not expect blooms the second year? Also, couldn't the bulbs be lifted from the pots and stored?OK,so that's three questions. Can you tell I'm thinking pots?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks jmorth.

gone2seed: Being in zone 5, we can't leave things to overwinter in pots, it gets too cold. And I don't have a fridge just for lily bulbs (though some people in my house may beg to differ ;). So I either chill them, plant them out in the garden or give them to friends or community gardens.

The pots I use are big ones. 1 1/2 ft. deep and at least a foot wide. I plant anywhere from three to five bulbs in there, depending on the width of the pot.

Oh to be in zone 8 today.....

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

>>>>Oh to be in zone 8 today...
It's freezing here.Must be in the forties right now:>)We are expecting low 20's tonight.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Try zero and below, I'd take your frigid forty in a second ;)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I hear ya Tracy...it's 5 here right now but we're headed for a heat wave of 23 today!!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

It's strange, but that makes a huge difference.

Oh yeah, someone asked how far apart I plant lilies. Forgot to answer...I plant them 3 inches apart, sometimes less. I like the lily field look. Planting too far apart, to me, leaves too much bare. Yes, I could plant other plants amongst them, and do many times, but with lilies as a favorite, what's a person to do?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Something about cheering when you get to 25 degrees is just plain wrong....but we do!!! LOL

After a low of -24 a couple weeks ago, I even cheered when it hit 0...pathetic isn't it?

It's funny that baby didn't sense the cold and stay in there for a couple extra days.

Congrats to you Pixie. What a sweet darling.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks T, I wanted them to name her Lily but they named her Isabella. lol

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

That's a beautiful name too.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Now I need to find some Lilies or flowers with the names Oryanna, Isabella, and Hayden. I already have one DL named 'Hunter's Torch' which is the oldest Grandchilds name...she just turned 10 Jan.1st

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Or you could hybridize your own and name them the names you like ^_^. I have a whole bunch of name ideas if I ever come up with anything good. I have the names before I have the lily. Lol.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Good thinking!! Thank you!!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

There's always Oriana http://store.lilies.ca/cgi/lilies/ORT001.html?id=G2yIcpN4

Thanks Moby..guess i'll have to get that one!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Guess so. ;)

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

Tracey...when you plant your 3 to 5 bulbs in one pot, are they all the same lily or do you mix? Your reply will determine if I have another question...LOL

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I did mostly the same type bulb and used a neighbor pot to compliment it. Gemini's co-op last year made it so I was able to buy bulk for a low price a spruce up my deck a bit. By no means am I the author of a garden done up well. So I say pot up what you like and make yourself happy.

'Orania' is very sweet.
