Andrew, I'd need dozens of them!
Are your lilies sprouting?
Dozens? Wow, how big is your yard? :*)
It's just that I have gardens everywhere. All around the house and garage, all along the fence, next to the driveway, middle of the front yard..... I think I'm out of control!
We're all out of control, goldfinch - but it is a great addiction to have! LOL
Wow, Tracey - beautiful.
Love those maroon tipped leaves on Geisha Girl. Is it like that every year, or just this one because it's been so cold?
Wow Mags, those are some serious looking lilies!! :)
Looking good, Magnolia! My Skyscraper came up with 2 noses last year (first year) and now it has 4 noses! Oh those buggy bulbs!
You know, 'Geisha Girl' has only been around here for one year. She's coming up on an LO schedule. I don't remember those maroon tipped leaves last year, but she seems way ahead of "schedule" and maybe with some cold temps it has changed the leaves.
'Sky Scraper' is in the rear section of my yard that borders a farmer's property that is full of weeds, burrs and garlic mustard and is never mowed. A couple of years ago, I decided I wanted not only to make it prettier back there, but to give those weeds some competition. It's never weed free, though I spend hours upon hours working back there, for pretty much a losing battle. I just hate those nasty weeds. I wish that farmer would mow, even if just once a year.
Thanks for your nice comments. And pard, you mean 'Sky Scraper' even gets better? The secret of the Buggy Bulb. She really is an amazing hybridizer and grower.
WOW on the Sky Scraper having 3 noses! Last fall was the first time I ordered from Buggy (thanks to all of you - and I mean that!!) and I can't wait to see them come up.
goldfinch you are going to have some wonderful surprises in your garden with those Buggy Bulbs this summer. Don't for get to show us here ;)
Mags, that triple nose shot above -- is that a dandelion growing? :)
It's a Dandy Lion alright. Lol!
lol dandelions always grow best in my flower beds. I am forever rooting them out.
Now, if only dandelions were a hot commodity I could corner the market! Ok, maybe most of us could corner the market! LOL
No sign of my Orientals yet. Should I be worried?
Nope. The ground is still quite chilly up where you are. ;) Some of mine are just now beginning to break ground, others are still hiding.
Only my earliest orientals are up yet.
I am finally seeing tips on some of my Orientals. Still no sign of Lemon Merangue(?), Dizzy, & Starfighter. I know... patience. The weather here has been so wet & cold this spring. Heavy frost again last nite. It is supposed to warm up slowly now. but showers almost every day. Not a very nice spring here. Third wettest April on record.
It's still pretty darn cold for Orientals to be showing up, especially in your neck of the woods. Keep the faith, and hopefully they will appear. :)
Hi I'm new to this forum
Here's the story.
I had asiatic lilies planted in containers that had been happy for five years.
Part sun - container on the driveway.
I moved in july and brought the lily family with me. They had finished blooming by the time I put the containers on the deck at the back of the house.
This spring( end of march) I realized this was a shady spot and wouldn't get part sun for months, the containers were frozen and had ice on top.
I hoped everything would be ok but by mid April when containers in other spits were sprouting lilies and there were no sign of the Melon favorite. I dug around and found bulbs that were short sprouted. I put it back for two weeks and just dug again and there has been no progress.
To make a long story short--How do you plant in containers so this won't happen again.
Thanks for any advise
Jo Ann
used to look like this
Hi, what do you mean "short sprouted?" Where did you move from? Different zone? When you dug down were they ok? rotted?
Hi ticker
Not rotted just a short sprout.
I moved within my zone 5a.
I have put the bulb in the garden where it gets full sun.
I doubt it will bloom this year but hopfully it will grow and bloom next.
This was an expensive bulb from B&B Lilies so I hate to loose it.
It's really early yet, I'd give it some time... :)
Thats it. I am not known for my patience.
Just to be on the safe side I will plant more containers with lilies and winter them in a different spot.
Can you recomend a good lily bulb company?
Looking for asiatics or pets. Do pets do well in a container?
Jo Ann
Laughing because I just imagined my cat (pet) planted in a container. Lol!
B&D Lilies
Faraway Flowers
the Lily Garden
Buggy Crazy
Lily Nook
those are favorites that come to mind
I think shorter lilies tend to do better in containers, but I am sure just about any lily (with a good weight at the bottom, like a rock or brick) could do well in a container. Taller ones seem to get top heavy in bloom stage.
I have never planted the taller types, asiatics are great for pots. If you google "lilies in containers" there is an article about supports for lilies in pots.
It's necessary to have bendable branches from shrub trimmings but it makes an ellegant support, much like an English woven fence.
Thanks for the bulb store tip. I have delt with B&D lilies, had a bad experience with them, I feel bad about it shipping mistake when I moved and wasn't treated well when I called for customer support, I was mad but they didn't want to help me.
You can read the sordid details in Garden watchdog.
I will probably buy from them again but call in my order as theit database defaults to my old address and my fall shipment rotted and they wouldn't replace.
Jo Ann
My last lily to peak out of the ground showed up yesterday.
Right on schedule.
