Magnolialover cries

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I am pretty sure that the foliage virus and the flower color breaking virus are two different viruses. I've never seen them both giving symptoms at the same time on any of my lilies.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

So you'd toss it, pard? I am inclined to do so. The virused one I tossed last year had both, perhaps somewhere somehow someone knew that it it would to look like that in order to slap me in the face, so I was sure it was diseased. It definitely is a learning curve. Found myself re-devouring my lily books, regarding viruses, and still, it just isn't crystal clear.

This is my "Tropical O"

Thanks, Maxine. It looks the same, just not how I thought it would look, based on the cataog and web picture. Any striping on your leaves?

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Nope, but the Arena still have the stripeing on the leaves, [but not as pronounced as it first was] blossom seems to be normal. Will keep it isolated from others though for the following yr. to judge.

Who said growing lilies would be easy?

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I would toss it, magnolia.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I did. Thanks , pard and everyone for their advice on these matters. It can feel stressful sometimes.
Looking forward to planting my seedlings out this fall, oh yes and scales too.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

My cry pile is looking good this year. Some fat stalks are emerging. I'm so happy my trash guy didn't take all of this away last spring.

(p.s. I never claimed to be weed free, though try as I may...)

Look at this nice fat one coming up...

Congratulations, Tracey!!!

And to think I was cryin'....I just don't know what most of them are now in my rush to dig and toss. Pretty no matter who they all are.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I bet you'll figure them out as you go. :)

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

Oh I'm so happy for you!! I felt so bad last year I'm glade that what you have are doing good
Gloria

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Yeah, I bet you'll be able to identify them as they come up and bloom. :) It will be just like a Christmas present everytime a new lily blooms! :)

I agree! Do you have a list of what you had in the garden last year beofre your "slash & burn" effort?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

You know, I used to be a very poor record keeper, until I realized that it would benefit to keep track of at least what lilies I had. I would fall in love with the same lily over and over and end up with a dozen of them, not that it is bad :) Some in "the pile" were unmarked and then there were others , like Act Two (from the PNWLS sale) that I may never know who it is , was or any such thing, because all of these in the strain were a bit different and perhaps they resembled something else. I never figured that lily at all. I did remember that one really thick stalk was a Golden Stargazer that I had for about 5 years.

In the end, maybe I will relish in the surprise of each bloom and remember, just because it doesn't have a name, doesn't mean it isn't as beautiful as ever. After all, I picked it out (once, twice or 12 times), so it must be lovely.

I do say that I feel much more confident about spotting a virus versus a nutrient problem this year. Hopefully the lily viruses will stay at bay for all of us this year.

p.s I'm looking forward to seeing you guys tomorrow. Have fun at the get together tonight too.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

I'll let you drool over my beautifully typed garden markers... :) If weather holds & bunnies eat elsewhere, it could be a good year for the lilies in my garden.

I was hoping to have 30-40 different dwarf irsi in blooms, but all you will see are buds. Running 2-3 weeks late this year. Sigh.

See ya soon!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Wanda, your gardens put me to shame, so organized and weedfree. I do look forward to seeing what you've got there this year!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

FWIW, last weekend I fertilized all my lilies with 4-10-10 and also gave each a little dose of dissolved epsom salts in the hopes I won't see that nutrient problem that is mistaken for virus infection. Will keep you all updated on how it turns out as the season progresses.

I have removed one lily which I am sure was virused; twisted stalk, mis-shapen and streaked leaves. I would have taken a picture (and regret I didn't) but it was just too @&%^*# cold out!!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Did you use a liquid or a powder solution for the lily fertilizer? Please keep us posted, pard.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I sprinkled granular Lillly Miller Bulb and Bloom food (slow release) around each stem.

Also, as an experiment, I used about a teaspoon or so of the same stuff in about a quart or so of water and let it set for about 15 minutes, stirred, and used that on my hanging basket tulips. I usually just throw those out after they finish blooming but I thought I would see if fertilizer would carry them to next year. Time will tell (but I will order new ones just in case!).

Hanging basket tulips. What a novel idea. Pard, what is that blue-purple in the far right basket that blooms with the tulips?

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

Looks like 'scabiosa'?

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Blue purple is a scraggly anemone blanda. These baskets were preceeded by baskets of miniature daffs (Tete a tete and other little ones). As the daffs are finishing up, the tulip baskets are ready to replace them. I have blooming baskets starting in late February! Very cheery after a long wet winter.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Love those tulip hang baskets pard. I bet they bring you great cheer after a long winter.

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Quoting:
From Pard: Very cheery after a long wet winter.
From Mag: great cheer after a long winter.

(Chuckle)That must be what they call "thinking alike".

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

as wallaby likes to say... Great minds think alike!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Did I hear my name, lol, I haven't looked in on this thread since last year!

My 'favourite saying' at school was said to be 'that's not fair', lol, it still is!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Well wallaby, since you dropped in, what do you think of my Bells? I think it's time to plop the whole plug into the garden. Maybe they will even bloom this year! (getting back on the subject of lilies...)

Hey they look great! The ones I left outside in a tub, fending for themselves in our cold summer last year are still quite small! Maybe I should pot them and put them in a greenhouse for warmth, but I already have a lot of that to do! It is quite warm here now, surprisingly, getting up to 20C (68F).

Those I do have in pots in the greenhouse from last years seed are looking great, many have flower buds, but the Bells had a head start so should be ahead of those. Warmth is the key word!

I haven't seen the mom plant come through yet, last year it had a few new stems and some flowered as well as the main one. The others in the same place are well through, Dizzy, speciosum, and the one I got from ebay last year with the yellow flowers looking like pyrenaicum, it's huge with two big fat ones, 2 smaller and 2 new small growths. The pic was 4 days ago, they are much bigger now.

Nice looking lilies you guys. What does Bells look like? I don't think I am familiar with it.

BTW, great minds do think alike, especially when "it's not fair" Lol.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Lol, that must be yours too Magnolia.

The Bellingham Hybrids which I got some bulbils from in 2006, didn't make any last year as it was cold. I put pics in PlantFiles.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Very nice flower. Is it an older variety?

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Yes it is, if I could find the site where they are all listed it will tell you, maybe I put it in PF?

oldie but goodie. I never even looked twice at lilies like those before joining DG. Through you all, I have broadened my horizons with lilies, well...... maybe even a little too much ^_^
