Magnolialover cries

Not too sure about that one, Maxine. The buds on my Pink Perfection gets pretty dark before they open. This is a pic taken about a week before they opened.

I wish it were more clear, Maxine. I guess I wouldn't toss it if it wasn't clearly streaked. How was the foliage?

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Maxine, are you sure that is a trumpet lily and not say, an LA?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

The height sounds LA-ish, doesn't it?

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Yea I know. But tag says Pink Percection. No streaks on foliage, just different color and markings than last yr. when it bloomed.
And yes, I know that it could be an LA. Will wait until the others open and check to see if there is another tag lurking in the plants.

Okay, a little late getting back about the mir-acid thing. The box says Azaleas, Camellias and Rhododendrons (acid loving plants) HD definitely does sell it, but maybe your store was out.

hi, i've been keep an eye on this thread as i'm pretty new to gardening and love lilies...towards the begining something was mentioned about not planting tulips near lilies....why is that?
i haven't had any luck when i've done searches, so i must be overlooking the info some where...i have bunches of tulip bulbs coming for the fall as well as some more lily bulbs (mostly species)

thanks for any info,

There's no reason why you can't plant tulips and lilies in the same general area. Sometimes the Mosaic Virus is also called the Tulip Breaking Virus and I believe the virus that causes the Rembrandt Tulips broken colors is not spreadable. Chances are, if you end up with a virused plant, either a tulip or lily, you'll catch it soon enough not to do any great harm.

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

ok...thanks!

The pink one above, had two more blossoms, one totally clean and one nearly identical to the first. The very last one to bloom was the perfect one. I'm keeping it & tagging it to remember the scene from this year. We'll see what next year brings. The picture I took was terrible on the second and third blooms.
p.s. I'm not crying anymore. It's just not going to be the best lily year on record, for me. My trench bed should start blooming soon, then I will post more. Epsom salts seemed to help, or the move, or both. Time will tell. Thanks for hanging in there with me. My intention was not to stress anyone out about the lily virus. But they sure were looking freaky. It's been a strange spring; hope that's it. Crossing my fingers (and toes, yeeeouch).

Mags, it's like finally being able to exhale after holding your breath all spring, isnt it? It really as been quite a weird spring, let's hope summer will be kinder..

Farewell Mag, 'til we meet again.

Things are really turning around in that pile of moved lilies. I'm still glad I moved them, to be cautious, and heck, now I just have room for more ;)
Seriously though, I am very pleased with the blossoms so far. I am so happy I didn't trash this pile. This is a new one I got from one of the PNWLS sale last fall that looked bad, moved it and is looking good.

I am so glad to hear that!!! I think we have all had our fair share of suspects this year. Good advice we all got to just hang in there and see what would really happen next. Another lily bed - best outcome I can imagine!

They all look just gorgeous!

I was, however, not totally without the virus. The only problem is, that it was one I didn't move! I bought this one from a vendor this spring and e-mailed them these photos, and they told me to toss it and would refund. Now this is variegation!

I would never suspect a brand new lily planted in spring to have a virus, but I suppose, they all live somewhere the seasons before we get them, right?

Mag,
who did you order from?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

It's a very, very reputable grower, of which I have ordered many times and been pleased. I will continue to order from them, as I see, this can happen to any one of us. I debated posting the photo, but I feel it is something we can all learn from. I won't be re-ordering this bulb though, perhaps it is prone to virus.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Holy cow, I never seen a lily so thoroughly 'variegated'. Glad you others are looking grand for you.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

intercessor & Maxine both would have to agree. Would you want to see it bloom, Moby? Or am I just crazy? How hideous could it look, the blossom?
Thanks for your kind words.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Absolutely ~ no harm in watching.

I want to see!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

mag, they look good. the var./virused one is wild!

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Mags, maybe if you bag it in something like an old window shear wrapped around a tomato cage. That might discourage chewing insects going between your virused lily and good lilies. Or, pull it and compost it. :) Or you could probably dust it with Seven and that would help with insects chewing on it...

Oh, good, you've convinced me! I can't help but be curious, you know, for the sake of learning.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Me too!!

Maxine

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

I'm curious also. So there is no such thing as a variegated lily?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Okay, so this one isn't 'Tropical', but it is another newly (last fall) planted lily, 'Pink Mystery'.
intercessor would remember this one, if he was here and I opinted it out in my front yard.
My answer would be 'Yup!' that is on the lily virus. It is tougher to tell on the paler varieties. And, of course, as it turns out, it was NOT in my cry pile.

The foliage (sorry about the blurred picture, but you get the idea)
BTW, 'Tropical' is getting close to opening...stay tuned...

That's a bummer. So... how is your cry pile doing?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

My cry pile pretty much looked fine. Did the epsom salt thing and it corrected a lot of the foliage trouble. Some of it must have been weather related, as the foliage corrected but a few random blossoms were distorted. Others looked fine and the color on them seemed fine. Had a strange looking 'Arabian Red', but after a professional opinion, decided to keep it one more year, as the foliage looked pale, but otherwise , perfect.
Is anyone else experiencing any weird flowers?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Now this is weird. 'Tropical' has bloomed now with absolutely no streaking in the flower. How can foliage look that bad and the flower look perfect? What is going on here?? Would you keep it or toss it?

A closer look

Thumbnail by magnolialover
Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

I would keep it and isolate it. See how it does next year. This has been a really weird year and so, I'd give it the benefit of the doubt... :)

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

The other thing is, it doesn't really look, like 'Tropical', or does it?

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

I don't know, I don't have it.. And I'm not real trusting of merchant pictures, so....
