Thank you, Steve, now I'm finding ways to protect these beauty in my garden. lol
My first Asiatics
Cat, hummm, cats? hummm, let's me sleep on that tonight. :-)
Kim
I agree about a cat. Unfortunately, I can't stand the thought of having an outdoor cat that may get run over by a car, picked up by a hawk or some other equally terrible end. I don't and won't let mine outdoors.
A friend of mine had a nasty problem with them last year and resorted to some chemical that he was very happy with. They are difficult to erradicate. I can't remember what he used, but I'll ask again (this will be about the third time)
Beaker, I understand your feelings, my cats don't wander far. And I do worry about them. We have 10 acres and so they pretty much stay on our property. Ms. Piggy doesn't leave the immediate yard, Bandit doesn't really go farther than the pastures or the barn and Champ, well, she's my traveling sales cat. But, she's getting older and likes to be home at night to sleep.. :) Actually, they are all 14 this year, but you wouldn't know it. But I do worry about them, the little fur balls.
Diann
Terriers are good! I have two Cairns (and a Yorkie who will only chase a ball) and they keep the vole population at bay. Not sure you would want to put up with their personalities in every other way, though. Cairns are a handful!
Lily
I have a six month old Westie that I would prefer stay out of the garden. He beheaded all the tulips and started to do the same with the iris. When he comes in with a face full of dirt, I can only imagine what he's been up to.
My old Westie who died last December, could still get the mice and voles if he was awake. I saw him snoozing in the yard last summer with a bunny nibbling grass not two feet from him.
Here's Ollie taking on his 'Easter Lily' this year. It was really a dwarf asiatic.
How adorable Ollie is! I love my furballs so. But having one is like having another baby. I'll have to resort to my "Planned parental" session all over again. LOL.
Thank you folks, for sharing.
Kim
I've been following Ollie. Totally commiserate. Did you know the Westies are the white version of a Cairn that split off many years ago? Same mold, different color and each has taken on a few of its own lovable traits! My Cairns are a nine-year-old rescue (that translates to even more trouble...) and a three-year-old that I intentionally purchased as a puppy. My first Cairn dieed in 2003. Anyway, back to the thread. They really do keep the rodents at bay and mine have learned to go around the garden, even to play ball, and, when they forget, they know what OUT means. Just takes the patience of a saint to teach them. Long year ahead, right???
Lily
I use to think the older I got, the more patient I was becoming. That all changed with Ollie. Yes, I believe it will be a very long year.
Hey Lilydigger, I have buds on the martagons you dropped off last fall. I just plopped them in a hole and they took off. I'll post pics when they bloom.
Glad to hear that! Mine are budding and I hope they hold on until I get back from up north. Really hard to leave when things are in this stage, but I want to get things planted up there, too.
Steve, is the one on the right 'Luminaries'? I love it. Your lilies seemed to have taken the rain in stride too.
Magnolia,
I want to say it is "American Spirit", but from the pictures I have seen the insides should be darker. The form is the same, however. I looked at a spreadsheet I put together last fall of my "fall bulbs" that I planted, and it shows I planted three "American" series Orienpets....and I have identified two of them for sure. I did look up "Luminaries" per your suggestion and I have to say it does look very much like the online pictures of "American Spirit"!!!
It's been a long time since I have seen those lilies, so ,forgive me. I bet it is 'American Spirit'. Good thing you are so organized with your spreadsheets, and moving too. You're much better at multitasking than I. Everything looks to have settled in nicely. Thank you for sharing!
Well Magnolia I am good with spreadsheets but absolutely terrible about labeling things once I put them in the ground - so I never know what anything is unless it is really distinctive!!!
At least you have beautiful peonies....between you and Ticker I am so envious. I, like an idiot, didn't pull any of them and bring them with me...I bought some new ones last fall, but you know how that goes with it taking a couple of years to get them established and all. I am so sorry to hear about your lilies....but you do have a terrific peony collection; I wish I had a fraction of what you have! Oh well I just need to be patient. It sucks having to start all over in anything you're passionate about!
Steve
Here they come, zone5's lilies!!!!! Watch out Steve!
Lovely, Ticker.
Kim
Wow Ticker what is that orange one? It is very beautiful!
Steve, I have no idea. As you can see, it's in a bed that I haven't gotten weeded yet (maybe next week). I don't know who it is. It's been there for probably 12 or 13 years... Not real tall, maybe 30 inches.... Probably originally from WallyWorld..
Beautiful lily, Moby
Moby, that red lily looks like "Monte Negro". Its a asiatic and very early. Mine aren't blooming yet.
Maxine
May I suggest a new thread for the zone 5 asiatics?
Beaker_ch,
You can run, but you can't hide. LOL, wherever the tread goes, I'll follow.
Kim
So..... how about a new thread? http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/728581/
