My first Asiatics

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

oooh, I like that second one ! What other kinds are you growing ?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Steve,
My 'puter's screen-saver currently is an Asao Clematis. I'd like to ask your permission to have your (above) Orientpet Lily as my screen-saver. I also need help how to do it, once permission is granted. (I don't ask too much, do I?).

HI Kim,

Of course you can!! You don't even have to ask....I am flattered! I am hoping to post better pictures though in the coming days. I will send you the file (your D-mail) - just right click on it once you open it and click "Set as Desktop Background" and you're done.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks you guys - I think it is "American Dream". I have several of the "American" series but this is the first to open. It is an Oriental x Trumpet hybrid, quite fragrant.

I have LOTS of Silk Roads that are getting huge and have high bud counts - am excited to see them open. Also an OT hybrid, very fragrant.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Yay!! I just planted American Dream!!! Yippee!

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

Well I was going to give up on lilies after having a virus but yours are soooo pretty, Steve, I might have to give it a go again next year. I pulled three out this morning, the rest that are blooming are all white ones and I'm hoping they are alright. I'm going to put all of them in seperate pots and see what happens next year.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Betterbloom, don't give up on lilies. Seriously, not all come virused. Check out some of the better retailers and get them on line. Just wait till BuggyCrazy's 2007 catalog goes up. She has the best lilies around! ;)

Betterbloom,

Don't give up on them yet!!!!!!!! I have had lilies with viruses before. As others have suggested, just pull and discard the affected bulb and plant. I have had them near others and those others were not affected. Lilies are too wonderful to pass up...dealing with viruses and diseases is unfortunately part of gardening. Don't let it discourage you; keep planting!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

heheh Ticker we were thinking the same thing :-)

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Well, once you really see the beauty in a lily you really don't see how you can be without them if you don't have to. They can be understated to highly flashy... The blooms last nicely and the fragrance of the scented ones is divine. :) Nope, don't give up on them yet.

Steve, you and I think a like on quite a few plants. :) I like that. ;)

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

Ticker....after seeing Steve's, I don't think I can. (darn him) I'm gonna need another flower bed next year for sure.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

OOooh, welcome to the addiction, Betterbloom. Could I interest you in some peony and clematis? How about a hosta? ;) LOL

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

No, thanks anyways. Really, I have two orders coming in soon and have no idea where I'am going to put everything. I try to stick to one addiction at a time, right now it's daylillies. But come fall I will be ordering more lilies. I figure what the heck, next year I'll know better.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Steve, that is a beautiful shot of 'American Dream'. Lucky for us, we have you around to help us northerners get our lily fixes ours get going. That picture is quite stunning.
Virus or no virus, lilies are some of the most beautiful plants you can grow. Don't let one infected plant get you down. Oh my! We are getting to talk about Buggy Crazy's fall offerings. One great reason to look forward to the fall season. And you know, I just wish I were kidding ;0)

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks magnolia!

You know I will have to try Buggycrazy this fall, based on what all of you say about her.....

More yellow Asiatics opening!! :-)

I know these aren't lilies but these are the nicest red daylilies I have ever grown I think - Charles Johnston. Still a little short on standard lilies but at least I'm finallty getting some color in my yard.

Hold on Steve, how about Album lily among daililies?

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Those are very pretty Lily_Love! I have some trumpets coming up don't remember what kind.Looks like you're at about the same level of progress in your blooming cycle that I am!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

What kind of daylily is that, Kim? They are very prolific. I have a bunch of different yellows but they're just producing buds.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

That's why I'm so happy to have found a "neighboring" lilies anthusiast. And thank you for the referral to Oldhouse garden. I've their newsletters for fall planting.
Betterbloom, we've a new flower bed for lilies. Waiting for hubby to help tilling the soils and condition it. Now maybe some silk road installation. (Is that a method to help support lilies, Steve?). I'm so excited with the prospect of more lilies in the garden next spring.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Steve, we moved into this house and the daililies were among few perennials that was left when we renovated our garden. Thus, unknown. Although, recently I've purchased "let it rip" and the picture looks very much similiar. So for now, I may have to take it to have it I.D. or perhaps, someone could help I.D. here.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Silk Road is a variety of OT hybrid lily. Here is a picture of it last year at my old house. I transplanted a bunch of the bulbs to the new place when I bought this house last fall. I still had the stems attached so they were easy to find. They got very huge! VERY fragrant.

Blushed>>>> But, it's quite alright. Love those trumpets called Silk Road. Now, I'm in more trouble than I thought I was. lol

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Steve, can't wait to see your Silk Road. It's one gorgeous lily. That's one liliy I'd have to be sure I brought over from an old house to a new one. Looks to be sttling in nicely in your new digs.

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

I could just kick myself. Charles Johnston was on my list of DLs this year to consider for purchase. It didn't make the final cut. After seeing yours, I think I made the wrong choice. Definitely will be on the purchase list for next year.

It will be interesting t see if yur Silk Roads are a bit shorter this year because of the move.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks magnolia - there are SOO many things I wish I had brought with me....several peonies to name a few - like the Fern Leaf that Maxine gave me, and my High Noon tree peony.......with everything going on I just didn't remember them or have time to get them all. My gardens at the old house were just packed with stuff. Lots of "I wonder how they're doing now" and missing them, not to mention lots of $$$$ spent due to my addiction. I only hope the new owner is caring for everything well - even thought about going back and asking if I might take a few things! heheheh. We did a lot of things to help her and she might be "accommodating"!

I think what I like about Silk Road is that it is the toughest non-Asiatic I have ever seen - adapts to just about any condition and is a strong grower, very heat tolerant. Really an impressive creation.

Beaker, I think they will be a bit shorter., but really not too much for being moved.....they're about 5 ft tall now though some of them hit 7 ft at the old place after about 3 years there. Then again, the bulbs I moved are much larger than what I'd typically get through the mail from the few Silk Road suppliers I know of.

Yes isn't Charles Johnston great? When it first started to open it wasn't all that impressive...but I remember it was really praised on Oakes' website. After a couple of days since the first flower opened, I can see why - blooms are just huge and clear and very evenly colored - sometimes you have to watch out for red daylilies as they can be almost rust-colored and not very bright. I have tried about 5 red varieties and this is hands-down the best - I will get more. This year is the first I have grown it.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Steve ~ please please keep in touch with the lady that bought your old house. We have a 'lily friend' that left most of her garden behind because the buyers wanted it intact. Within the year, they took every thing out. There had to hundreds of bulbs that were just thrown in the trash. Sob!

Not sure about tree peonies, but the others are easy enough to split so you wouldn't be leaving her with big holes in the ground.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks Moby, you're right. I did drive by the house a few times this spring and the front at least looked really good and all of the daffs and hyacinths, and later Irises and peonies, were blooming. Most of my efforts however were in the back which I couldn't see from the street. So she appears to be maintaining, but like you said you never know....

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Steve, I've the above daylily identified as classic Hyperion 1924. Though, the pics. didn't convinct me that's what those are what I have.

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Lily Love, Hyperion is a bright yellow, not a red.

Thumbnail by beaker_ch
Central, AL(Zone 7b)

beaker_ch; That's a pretty yellow daylily. Steve, see the differences? beaker_ch, look back to the pic I posted above with Album Lily. Maybe you can help.

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

My bad. I thought you meant to say that the Charles Johston was really Hyperion.

I haven't a clue about the name of your daylily. Doesn't quite have the form of Hyperion, but is probably a hybrid. With 60,000 named dayliles out there, it would be pretty hard to exactly identfy. If you ever do any trading, you shoud probaby refer to it as an unknown.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

I agree that is really doesn't look like Hyperion. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful, clear yellow. I cannot find a variety that really looks like it.....if I do, I will post what I see.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thank you, thank you, beacker_ch and Steve. I'll run out to the garden and see what's are blooming and new surprises.

Colosal! Oh wow! Stargazers must be just as big when mature?

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Hmm Kim - I would think so - I never got those to come back well for me. They seem to struggle for me in the heat.
