Midwest Lilies

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I am going to have to try a Madonna Lily. They are so pretty. No new ones for me but Orania is sure doing well this year.

And Pink Pagoda. Don't you just love chain link as a backdrop?

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

I do love chainlink! I have to, it was all I could afford.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Hey- chain link is a great backdrop! I used to have a 6 foot solid cedar fence all around the back but not enough hours of sun to grow what I wanted to grow. Not any more!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Your chain link is much better than my peeling, blue paint house! LOL

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Well, I have chain link AND peeling blue paint house. And rotting siding to boot that needs to be replaced this year. I just have to make sure my garden photography doesn't point in that direction lol.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

LOL I got new siding a couple years ago. When the workmen were ready to start, we went around the house and I gave them various instructions ~ 'break my lilies and you will die' ~ kind of instructions. There's a big hoop-type trellis (with 2 Clematis) against the house that they said would have to come out. "THAT isn't going to happen." They dropped their jaws. (it was funny) But I did lean it over and supported it on a ladder and let them work around it.

Oh ~ and I promised them 2 cases of beer. ;)

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I assume they got their beer AFTER the job was done and not during it!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Well then, no wonder they were willing to work around it!

Pardalinum, I think you win the bad backdrop award. We are going to paint our house green this year......but then we said that last year and the year before too! We are definitely going to do it this year though.......and then SELL!!!!!!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I understand procrastination. I was going to replace the siding last year and the year before and and.... I assume when you try to sell your place you won't reveal that you live in a flower pilfering neighborhood!!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

No, I don't think that will be in the contract! LOL

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Ticker's lily labeled "Tom Pouce" reminds me an awful lot of Pink Pixie, the asiatic lily. New to Dave's Garden, but a huge lily collector.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Welcome magnolialover! We are pretty much a bunch of lilyholics here!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Welcome to DG, magnolialover!!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Thank you so much for the welcome. Hopefully I will be able to post pictures, as I have soooo many different favorites. One I have blooming is Elegant Lady. We have it next to our deck and after buying 3 of them from Brent & Becky's Bulbs last year: I think I have 9 this year. The breeze picks up the fragrance and we smell it while we are watering the flowers on the deck or eating dinner. The Madonna Lilies are so very close, maybe 2 days? I love this time of year.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Lincoln, Moby, wonderful pictures, please keep them coming! They are so beautiful!

Magnolialover, first off, welcome to Dave's, you'll not find a nicer bunch than these folks! Regarding the mystery lily, at this point, I'm just about ready to name it "Fred." :) Who ever it is I think we decided it's not a Tom Pounce. :) But since I have a tag made for Tom Pounce I'll probably have to go buy one. :) Actually, I think I have one at the other end of that bed. And now that I think about it, "Fred" is an Asiatic not an oriental, at least that's what his leaf structure looks like.

I've been out since about 6:30 this morning weeding and moving things around in my garden. I have things so jammed packed in my back garden that things begin to suffer from it. So, I'm moving a lot of my older daylilies down to a different garden and then I'll have spots open up so that the lilies have a fighting chance. I've got to move some Siberian iris too... Open up some spots so that the Bearded Iris has a fighting chance. I did dig up and move a perennial geranium that had become a really nasty thug, and I'm seriously thinking of relocating my lamb's ears to a different bed too. It just takes up to much really valuable space in the back garden.

Ok, enough of my whining! Please post some more pictures! ;)

Color Complements - Someone mentioned wanting to bring out the apricot color of a lily. You can use complementary colors to do this. The opposite color on the color wheel. For example, if you want to bring out the yellow color, surround it with yellows complement - violet. Orange's complement is Blue. Yellow orange (or apricot) would be blue violet.

JMorth, Tinos is a very cute specimen. I love that light yellow, buttery color. Bought some Conca D'Oro at a flower show in February (in WI.), forced the bulb inside, planted it outside a few weeks ago after acclimating it to the climate and I should have a flower open by tomorrow. June is very early for that OT Lily in this climate. It's a beautiful flower though, what a wonderful frangrance too!
Ticker, Thank you for your hospitality and perhaps Fred would be a nice name for your unknown. Tom Pouce is a nice grower, so save your label and if you don't have one, get one. They are easy to find at the greenhouse.

My first martagons! Got them from a friend last August and they all came up and bloomed. I am sooooooooooo excited!!

No fair! Mine took 3 years. How many bulbs did your friend give you? Looks like you have quite a show going on there.

Beautiful Trumpet. I don't have time right now, but if no one names it before, I'll check out my sources tonight. Does it smell heavenly? It looks like it would.

jmorth -my guess is Pink Perfection http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=2401294

hee hee I think that's the same pic, Kooger!

Welcome to all the new members and infrequent posters. Yea! Can't have too many lily lovers. Thanks everyone for sharing your wonderfuls pics.

Any my FIRST lily of the season has opened.... drum roll please!!

Dipo Lolo LA........... actually a little pinker than the pic shows and very large blooms!

beaker - that's exactly what I expected and was excited just to see them all come up, but never in my wildest dreams did I expect all this bloom! There were about 12 plants and she just dug them out and brought a boxful to lunch. I planted them, stem and all, that evening and they acted like they didn't know what hit them. They died back kind of normally in their new home, so maybe that had something to do with it.
kooger - if they keep this up, I'll have some to share... drum roll for your first bloom!
Moby, thanks for the gracious welcome - I've been following this thread because of your gorgeous Doeskin. I planted that one up at the cabin and am anxiously awaiting its bloom, hopefully on my next trip up there.

woohoo! (rubbing hands in anticipation) LOL

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Kooger, I like that lily's name Dipo Lolo! Sounds like something I call myself when I slice through a bulb when digging around it. ;) It's a beautiful lily!

Jmorth, great lilies!!! Keep posting pictures!!

Lily Digger, cool Martagons! I think I have some somewhere. I lost a bunch of lilies. I think the fluffy tail rats got them (aka Squirrels).

Time for me to go out wandering around the gardens and see just exactly what I do have blooming...

Lily_Digger - I can't tell from the picture what the flowers really look like. Do you know if it is a named hybrid? Depending on what it is, you may have some very expensive and elusive bulbs there. Black Prince goes for 50.00, Gaybird 45.00, Redpath 35.00, and Hantsing 25.00. Then of course, it could be Dalhansoni which is only 10.00. You should try to find out what it is. All the named bulbs above, are in the color range of your bulbs.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Might be Claude Shride or Danhansonii. One or the other I think. Could you post a closeup of a floret?

Can you IMAGINE getting a whole SHOVELFUL of martagons. Around here we usually sell to each other - one of the few bulbs we sell instead of swopping, or we swop seedlings or we give each other scales.

Even tried to swop 3 scales of Black Prince for a HUGE plant of Obsidian - a heuchera selling for $25 for a baby at the time. No go. Maybe this year.....

Wow.....I think I'm developing Martie-envy.

Anybody think we need to start another thread yet?

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Ok, you lily sleuths who is this guy?? Kind of looks like Coral Sunset? It's been in the garden for going on probably eight or nine years. :)
