Dear wierd weather,
last night we had some lightning with our 28degree rain.
Al
Al, You had rain?!
How did you guys rate?! We're CRYING for rain in Eastern Iowa.
Lucky Duck. :o)
DeannaV
D,
that little bit of rain, turned to sleet, turned to snow for a nice 3/4" crust to scrape.
Is IA that dry, how much snow have you had?
We are lucky to have a neighbor within 5 mi. who is fairly sophisticated with his weather reports. FYI 87.5" of snow so far this "winter" season has settled to 25" on level. With this kind of cover there is almost no frost at ground level. Ken
Al,
We got about 13 inches the first half of December- since then only 3 inches in Jan., a day of mixed ice, rain, sleet and snow mid Feb. That's it, here. Did get 2 inches of rain in Jan. sometime, but we are still 20 inches below normal for the last 14 months. January's moisture DID drop us down from severe to extreme draught. Not enough to get euphoric. :-)
D.
Our 6 year drought has lifted here thank God. We were very warm and almost no snow pack in the mountains 3 years ago now there is a ton of wet packed base now being covered by fluffy powder. Our water table here is visible and all the retreating lakes are filling to their levels now. You guys got all of Canada moisture last year over Iowa I thought.
Soferdig,
You are right, about much of Iowa. I live on eastern edge of Iowa, right on the Mississippi River.( Think of the shape of our state- we live right at the base of the "nose", where the Miss. runs east and west.)The rains went north or south of us over and over again, last year. We couldn't seem to buy a drop!
Deanna
Well it is simple then. WASH YOUR CAR. That always works for me cause I live on a gravel road and it is rare that the road is dry when I wash it. Another for sure thing is wash the outsides of your house windows. The problem with that is usually you get lots of wind and water to drive the dust onto the windows. LOL
Have your closest farmer friend cut alfalfa for hay. That's a sure thing to bring on the rain. Ken
I forgot the hay good one Ken! Pour concrete, plan a sailboat weekend, scedule a move, schedule a wedding outside, go camping, ......
Have an open garden weekend!
ROFL!!!!
I wish it was that easy! You are all so funny.
Great news tho! Just heard our local weather guy say the next few weeks could bring lots of rain! (From his mouth to God's ears, I hope!)Deanna
Deanna. I live on the edge of the basic storm path thru Utah... we get the wind But the storm's precip stops about 30 miles north of us - along the Bookcliffs just north of the I-70 highway.
Our Junipers, sage brush, even the rabbit brush, are showing signs of 3 out of 5 being dead... beyond recovery... we've had about 7-10 years of drought that even our desert plants cannot withstand.
The mountains up outside the East side of Salt Lake City [ the snow the world loves to ski??] are at 150% of avg... while I can see the rock peaks on our mountains where snow has always lain at this time of year.
These recent series of storm brought warm winds outta Arizona have been eating the snow right into the air... it won't be there to feed our streams and water table this year... ain't gonna be wasting any water washing my car.
~Blooms
edited to add - local newspaper says our mountains have recieved onlly 60% of 'normal' moisture.

Deanna--rain or just more sleet to keep the cops busy? But I'd rather have it chilly like this until Spring really comes. I had 6 inch tall evergreen daylilies up in January! I had to trim them and cover with mulch. A waste of their energy way too early to do any good...
Minneapolis is 32º snow/rain/sleet. What a day.
Waiting for pics of your snowsleetrainman
We had thunder, lightning and hail at 3 am. Looks like snow this morning but it's just a blanket of hail.
Better to have the hail now, rather than when the lilies are up!
Ain't that the truth! llilyfan should know--makes them hard to show with tattered leaves.
Boy, are we catching it! Water is 3 ft. deep on River Drive in Davenport. Cars are floating down the street. Firemen are rescuing people as we speak! All the storm drains are overflowing- they are calling in boats to rescue some people from flood ravaged areas! Winds at Moline airport were clocked at 70 MPH awhile ago. Lightening strikes in last two hours have caused house fires in Davenport, Bettendorf, and Rock Island. A new Hampton hotel near the Moline airport is mostly destroyed? from current news alert. More than 2 inches of rain in less than half an hour! Weather Alert says "STAY INSIDE!" Storms moving towards Sterling/Rock Falls !
We had a good one here last night, too - almost 3 inches of rain in the gage this morning and there are branches down all over the yard.
Yesterday no snow or ice left, 10:00 pm thunder storm, this morning blizzard.
Sure hope everyone is OK south of here. I don't know if I'd classify what we have today as a blizzard, but there is ice under all the snow and it makes driving a real challenge. There's been a bunch of suburban school closings, but Mpls and St Paul schools are just running two hours late. It's suppose to stop sometime between 10:00 and noon. Hope my snow blower starts.
Pauline, you always make me laugh when you comment on Minnesota weather. Being a transplant, I can understand why you think our weather is "somewhat extreme". Being a native, I welcome the snow and cold and another week I won't have to worry about the garden. After last week, I was starting to worry a bit. Saw a little green where the dwarf Iris was trying to peek out above the mulch.
Suppose to be a little cold today and tomorrow, but sweatshirt weather for the rest of the week with temps in the 30s.
Yep Zen, you could have been a nice girl and sent it down I-29, but no you had to send it up my way. Can't see out of the windows here; complete white out conditions, and the weather report says that it will get worse into the afternoon. No brown hankies for me for quite some time, I guess. Ken
beaker_ch,
Hey I am glad I make you laugh. I have to confess, even thought I am new to Minnesota gardening I did grow up in Minnesota but was away for 21 years. Back in the good old days I enjoyed winter. I was a cross country skier and loved to skate. Unfortunately I tore my knee up skiing in Norway so no more outdoor winter fun for me.
I just came home from a doctor appointment what normally takes 10 min took me 25. I saw several cars and a bus that had spun up against curbs and couldn't move. They haven't even started to plow the city streets.
Sorry Kandlmidd, next time I will send it south of both of us.
65 degrees and sunny on Saturday--- 40 degrees and thunderstorms + wind on Sunday. Don't you just love Spring? never a dull moment.
Still snowing here. Let the dog out about an hour ago and his short little legs didn't take him much more than a foot from the steps. Looks like it's time to go out and shovel. I haven't seen any plows either. I'm sure they are waiting for me to get done, so they can come by and block me in again (LOL). Looks like somewhere between six and eight inches so far.
Don't they always sneek up and plow you in when you're just about done?? I do remember that well!
Well, it looks like we got about eight inches out back. Out front it looks like a foot and a half. It's already blowing and drifting. I told my new neighbor he could use my snowblower if he could get it started. Started right up for him. Makes me so mad. I couldn't get it started last time and I think it's because my hands are becoming so arthritic. I did go get gas for the blower and the roads are soooooo bad; very icy. I don't think this will clear up over night.
So, I'm thanking my neighbor for blowing out my drive and whining once again about how hard the snowblower is to start and he said, "why don't you just plug it in and use the electric start?" "Electric start?", blank look on my face. We went over to his garage, he plugged it in, hit a button and off it went. I'm still shaking my head. If I find out my lawn mower has a plug-in, I'm really going to be mad.
ROFL well at least he got the snow blowin doen for you
hehe, Beaker!
That "blank stare" really tells the tale, doesn't it? I just HATE it when that happens! ha. I wish I had a dollar for every time I have used that blank stare - then felt like such an idiot when my DH (in particular) has helped me out with something that I "shoulda/coulda" figured out on my own, if I'd of thought it out ahead of time. Oh, well, all was not wasted-he's got quite a few chuckles off my blank stares!
