Wierd Weather!

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

It is 22 degrees outside with snow on the ground and sleet coming down. And the wierd part? THUNDER & LIGHTENING! 63 degrees on Tuesday and temps dropping thru the floor today. Feels like March.

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

Thunder & lightening?? Totally bizarre Wanda. We had some weird weather too.....yesterday was warm and smelled like spring. This morning we woke up to snowy conditions and then it started raining like crazy. I just heard on the news today that we're going to experience a racoon population explosion because they're soooo confused. Even they seem to think it's an early spring coming on.

Definitely weird......wonder how our gardens will behave this year.

You said it Wanda!

So far this morning we have had: snow, thundersnow, hail, freezing rain, more snow and now an ice storm. And more snow later and then high winds to blow everything around.

Oh, and Fri and Sat we will be below zero for lows.

*rolling eyes*

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

Blizzard like here about 40 minutes ago. Sub-zero temps on the way.

mornin_gayle, thanks for the heads up. I think we are next.
Mary

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

We're getting lots of rain, and very loud thunder. I don't think we're supposed to get any snow. As long as the temps stay above freezing we'll be OK. If this were to turn to ice, it would be an interesting drive home tonight!

Mary,

One word. Hibernate!

;~)

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

Looks like we got about four-six inches of snow. It's hard to tell because it is drifting. Madison just reported ten inches; the two major mall's in Madison are closed.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

59° here at the moment and very windy. Spitting rain off and on. Tomorrow it's supposed to get really cold and we'll be down to 8° by Saturday night!! But think of this...spring has a hard time making up her mind, so maybe we are beginning SPRING!!!

I know I've seen a surge in the number of dead skunks on the roads in the last week... LOLOLOL

south central, WI(Zone 5a)

50 yesterday, 14" of snow so far today. Lady reported that the Channel 15 tower got hit by lightening and it traveled to the road--wouldn't want That to dance around the car. Schools closed.
Birds are Very greatful that I filled the feeders and the birdbath to the brim yesterday and so am I.
Everyone stay safe, the snow we are getting now is more of the fine, icy stuff.

Report from Davenport, Iowa
We're on the west side of Mississippi river, across from Moline and Rock Island, Illinois.
We've had rain, thunder, lightening, freezing rain, sleet, and snow today. What a mess. Over 100 schools closed in the area.
Mid-afternoon now, and all is quiet. Whew. could've been worse! Just the same, I'm relieved my hubby and I didn't have any reason to get out in it, today. Much nicer on the inside, looking out!

Only 32 days til Spring!!!

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 4b)

Here in Minneapolis the temperature is dropping at the moment the forcast is for a high of 0º tomorrow and a low of -16. How much snow we are in for varies by who is making the forcast, so we will have to wait and see. No snow yet though.

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Looks like it missed us completely! I'm not complaining, we have plenty of snow cover to "weather" the cold this weekend.

Excelsior, MN(Zone 4a)

Yes, the snow missed this area, but the temperature this morning is down right RUDE!!!!! -5, -25 wind chill or thereabouts. Geez! Sure am glad it's February!

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Weather sure has been mixed up of late. Remember when January use to be really cold and then in February it would start to warm up and give just enough of a tease to think Spring was right around the corner? Then March would come with all its snow and then finally April with a mix of rain and sun and everything would begin to grow. And lovely warm May with all the spring blooms. Now you don't know what to expect. Snow on Mother's Day, 4th of July cold enough to make you think you're living at the North Pole. I have to say, last summer was the most decent summer we have had in a few years. I sure do hope for another like it this year.

Rockford, IL(Zone 4b)

Is it time to open the pool yet? The snow missed us, but the cold has settled in. Yesterday I drove down to Aurora, IL (about 1 hour away from me) and on the way back drove through a lighting storm, sleet, snow, and sunshine. Weird! It was almost 50 here the other day, now it's 8 with a windcill of -10. Lovely. Our winds are supposed to pick up to 30 mph over night, with temps dropping to 0. Tomorrow we're supposed to be at -7 with 20 mph winds. My biggest worry is the plants that started coming up with the warm strech, and are now subjected to this with no snow cover. I mulched and remulched, so I hope they'll be ok.

Stacy

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 4b)

Minneapolis reporting in -11 this morning. Duluth MN canceled there frost fest yesterday because it was too cold! There are wild chill warnings out. Next week we are going to have temperatures up to 30º that is 30 above zero. Yoyo time.

Rockford, IL(Zone 4b)

We're at -10 this morning with northwest winds at 18 mph. we're supposed to get all the way up to 8 above today. Good day to snuggle up in front of the fire and watch a few movies.

Who forgot to pay the heat bill?????

My thermostat was set at 70*, but when I got up it was only 52* inside. I turned it up to 80* but I doubt it is going to do any good.

I know one thing, there is absolutely no way I am getting in the shower right now. *shudder*

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

mg,
We got to -15.
Funny about the thermostat, DW thinks that way in the summer, whether it's set at 70 or 52 - when it's running at 100% on that's all it's got captain(scottish accent)
Al

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Beam me up Scottie!

The guy in the red shirt just got frostbite and hypothermia!

mg

Rockford, IL(Zone 4b)

Chilly in there this morning too - thermostat is set at 70, but the furnace is cranking to keep it in the low 60's in here. Wearing sweats, fuzzy socks, with my bathrobe over the top. Not fashionable, but it works.

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

Wanda,
Did you get a lot of snow? One of the local weather guys here said that if you hear thunder during a snow storm that one clap of thunder will mean approx. 4" of snow, two claps is approx. 8" of snow and three or more claps could mean 12"+ of snow, from the storm. So, how much snow did you get and do you remember how many claps of thunder you heard?

It was -11°F here this morning, but last night the prediction was -20°F by morning. I hope we never got that cold. My poor, out-of-zone plants.... (:o) Oh well, any losses just frees up some real estate to try something new...

Just in case anyone is interested, I'm ready to go outside and start planting now. Would all of you do me a big favor and open all of your doors and windows and turn up the heat in your homes really, really high? Certainly all of that heat-loss will help bring spring a little earlier this year, shouldn't it? A fan in the door to help blow the warm air outside would be a big help, too. (:o)

(OK, taking cover because of that last statement).
Mike
(and I'm still MONTHS away from getting outside to play in the dirt)

south central, WI(Zone 5a)

There, there Mike. Get some hot cocoa and tuck in warm with a book and we will all come out to play in the spring. Had 14" of snow on Thurs and -double digit windchill now. At least the snow is covering my plants that greened up when it was 50-earlier this week!!

Chatham, IL(Zone 5b)

Certainly a strange winter... central Illinois usually gets a January thaw.. for a week or so, but all of January was around mid 40's and it got to the 50's early February. Feb. 8th I took a nice bike ride and saw at least six dandelions in bloom and swarms of flies. Two weeks later it's well below freezing. Now there's the normal flocks of canadian geese, yet Robins are playing in the snow with my dying crocuses.. the rose bushes managed to put leaves out just in time for them to re-freeze. I am wondering as to how much teasing the bulbs are going to take. One good note, the Romanian Salvia and the Sweet William don't seem to care at all and look like they have been on steroids all winter.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Just got back from a 4 day weekend in Vegas. We wore light jackets 2 days and NO jackets 2 days! Iris and pansies were blooming around the casinos out on the strip. But downtown Fremont Street was one big party--- :)

Rockford, IL(Zone 4b)

Wooo hoooo Wanda! I love going to Vegas :)

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

I haven't been there for 14 years 7 it has REALLY changed. The downtown used to be a filthy pit--it's all updated & fun. The Strip is crowded and full of HUGE Casinos with HUGE crowds. Downtown was less hassle & dancing in the streets. I even came out $2 ahead after 4 days of nickel poker & slots! (My friend is better at it and won $1200.)

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Vegas is Disneyland for the entire family now. I never gamble and go there for Vet conferences and love it. 5 days is my max though.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

I know what you mean--- 4 days was enough for me too. I don't know that I would take kids there except for maybe Excalibur or Circus Circus. Most activites are resticted to adults at the other hotels/casinos. Not to mention the bawdy "escort " photos handed out on the sidewalks & nude pamphlets on steet coners. On the other hand, the buffets could fill any teenage boy easily.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Sofie,
Are you on the run from the law or what?

Presque Isle, WI(Zone 3b)

Al, that's what I'm thinking also. Michigan, then Seattle, now Montana with side trips to Vegas (but not for more than 5 days) and Alaska, mind you. Wrap all that up in a Vet costume and it looks pretty suspicious to me. Ken

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Gotta find out what the ree wardd is!

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

The reeee ward is to meet the world without being stuck in a rut. I have always wanted to see the world and I am continuing that pursuit. I left Michigan to be a veterinarian in Seattle then Michigan then Seattle then Montana then Alaska then ............ My world is open to what ever I select. Not what I should do. You might remember Dan Hinkley (herronswood nursery) grew up in the same small town in Michigan and we both want to use our vocation to see the world. I'm hoping to go to Pango Pango soon. Call me tomorrow in AK 907-486-5418 I'll be working hard from 9am till 4 Pm Alaska time. (that is 1 hour later than Pacific for those who don't travel much.)

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Momma always said: The only difference between a rut and a grave is how deep you dig it.

I'm glad you are getting to experience so many different areas, it's amazing how one region differs from another, isn't it?

But, where or where are the pictures???

;~)

mg

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I have posted everywhere in the last 2 weeks so I'll give you one. I only have what is in My pictures here at his house so here goes.

Polar bear in a blizzard?

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

I've heard about those white-out blizzards. Wow - it's really white!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)
