another what my name ? TB
WHO DAT PART 2#
Well Tazzy, whoever it is, it sure is purdy!
Doss, there's an iris called 'Moby Grape'? Yoooohoooooo, Moooooobyyyyyyyy....do you have that one? ;-)
"what my name" and "whats his face" camp out at my house ANY day!
No Moby Grape here, but it's sure callin' my name!
you go girl, keep um com'in
tazzy, that dark purple what's its name is special (aren't they all, but then there's the extra specials).
doss, it was tazzy (who else) who got all this grape talk going.
(and we're not even into the Fermented's yet ;-) Another story altogether!
She ID'd my purple one as I. pallida, and it kind of grew from there. Different grape-scented pallida-looking iris are checking in from hither and yon, shorter, taller, now white as well as purple... Tazzy says the pallida line is not so well documented, so it's interesting to compare.
Charlotteda, I think we can be sure of one thing: you've got some special iris there (and roofers can't kill it either, just slow it down for a season!).
silverfluter, maybe start a thread asking what iris lay along your route? There may be some great gardens that are open to see, as well as non-internet sellers that local folks will know.
Here's one seller in Missouri. It's in the west, which sounds like where you'll be - but I'm not sure if it would be a long way out of your way (I can't quite picture your route -- I'll have to get an atlas out!!).
I've never been to this place, but it looks worth visiting from it's website:
Comanche Acres (Gower, MO)
http://www.comancheacres.com/
Here's a direct link to their map of where they are:
http://www.comancheacres.com/Directions%20to%20our%20garden.htm
there nice peple went to there garden once and have met at region meetings .
so then, even if it *is* out of your way silverfluter - why not stop by and see them (and their iris).
tazzy, tazzy, GUESS WHAT BLOOMED TODAY: a *third* iris (count 'em, three!!). It's white with a touch of yellow. Does it really have a touch of grape scent or am I just smelling that everywhere now?? I guess it was a rhizome that had given up on blooming before I divided last year. How exciting. Pic. coming when the sun allows.
Thanks for the info on the link. It looked very good but I'll look at more after work. Not much chance of getting DH to go that far north (Cottey College is two hours south of Kansas City). But atleast it's another good website to drool over LOL.
A light just dawned in my head though. DH takes a hunting trip in September and usually I stay home because that's my time to spend diggin' in my dirt without interruptions. So maybe what I need to do is plan my own hunting trip! Only my trophies will be planted in the ground! I'll be needing some co-conspirators. I'll start working on that .
Hmmmmmm. Creamsicle makes me hungry!
Well I'll have to put my "hunting trip" on hold. DH told me he doesn't plan to take his trip this year. We have tons of bills to pay. Maybe next year.

The smell alone makes me hungry for an orange ice cream bar!
well, there's always internet "hunting" silverfluter -- and you can fill up those carts and then just never quite get around to checking out. Doesn't do much for the garden, but great for the spirits sometimes!
I have a nice Lemon yellow and white TB that has spoons. Any guesses? It is not Thornbird.
Thanks
Moby, would be having any of those creamsicles you could trade?
Your 'creamsicle' looks a little like Fire Bride - mine just bloomed, it is a little paler than the photo makes it look.

Tazzy, check out Pretorian Guard at Leota's and see if it looks like your horned one in the first photo. Does to me.

Susan
Thanks for the tips on 'creamsicle'. I seem to refer to my unnamed as food. Stand by for 'chocolate-cherry'.....
bluegrass425 could it be Sky Hooks 1979?
Guess what! I found the tag for my La iris. It's an Almeria. I think I may have id'd another one. I think it's Ballerina. When DH gets home I can post the pic and see what you think.
here is Iris #3™ -- hope someone can give it a better name!!
It really *does* have a grape scent -- much fainter than the purple pallida. But there.
Charoletteda, does your white pallida have the touch of yellow that this one has? Could it be???? (tazzy, does the Roofer Iris™ have yellow like this?:-)
It's very tall and a larger bloom than the purple pallida. Posting 2 pics.
Moby,I was just looking at the pic of creamsicle again. And it looks alot like one of my unknowns. I have really been studying it trying to figure out what it is http://www.worldiris.com/public_html/Frame_pages/ID.html
The link above is the article where I found a detailed outline to fill out to help with identifying an iris. I never looked at any flower as closely as I did today when I used this outline. The only difference I can find is that the flower is 22 " high. But since this is the last two blooms it's possible that the others were taller. I'm pretty sure they were. Well it also doesn't smell like creamsicles. Sometimes when I smell it there is a hint of a cake baking though.
And the one I have that smells like grape koolaid--I was just looking at it. There was a big rock sitting next to it and when I moved it I could see the rizome. It was just the color of a carrot! My others have brown rizomes. Is there a type of iris with carrrot colored rizomes?
I wish we had taken the pic yesterday. The wind is blowing today and the flower looked alot better yesterday. It's wearing out.
That does look like mine! I couldn't quite capture the color right with my camera. Cake? Maybe fruity cake...
Well, maybe. There is one more bud yet to open. Maybe when it's just open it'll smell like creamsicle. We are going to Missouri to pick up our daughter from college. I hope it's still bloomming when we get back.
The timing for this trip is all wrong. My first brugmansia bloom is finally opening, my mandevilla will open in a few days, my agapanthus will also open while we are gone. They are going to open their eyes and there will be no one here to say hi to them.
Question: If a flower opens when no one sees does it get sad? Does it smell good anyway?
Moby, BTW was your iris named when you got it? I forget which website I was looking at, but I found this iris that looked just like mine and they called it Ballerina.
Hooked, thanks for the suggestion. I looked in the PFs and it sure looks like Sky Hooks! I have Proud Tradition and Avalon Sunset blooming near it today :)
silverfluter,
wishing you a good journey, and a speedy return home while all those delights are still in bloom.
I was away for a week in the spring, and it was another kind of pleasure to find all the things that had sprouted, budded, bloomed in my absence.
I hope they all wait for you!!
Very pretty pics, Tx.DB.
Silverfluter, yes, it was named and I'll go out to where I got it next week. They don't have much to look at right now because they lost many buds to a late freeze.
Tx doodlebug, Harker Heights is a name I haven't seen in a long while. We lived near Copperas Cove when my DH was stationed at Ft. Hood. That was way before my gardening days. I vaguely remember most people complaining about the dirt there having a lot of kaliche.
silverfluter - yes, kaliche galore. That is why when we built a house several years back I put in a large raised flowerbed. I brought in the soil and amended it easily. I haven't been to Fredericksburg in about 7 years. I am going to plan a trip in the spring sometime just to see the wildflower fields. I hear they are a sight to see.
:-)
My goodness--we could make a hwhole flowerbed up with these gorgeous unnameds!
