oh wow! what a beauty! does it have a name?
want some of that! (dat).
tazzy already id'd this one for me as I. Pallida in another thread.
Now I am wondering *which Pallida*. Does anybody know?
There are three I. Pallida in the PlantFiles. http://davesgarden.com/pf/adv_search.php?search_type%5Bcommon%5D=contains&searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&search_type%5Bfamily%5D=contains&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&search_type%5Bgenus%5D=contains&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=iris&search_type%5Bspecies%5D=contains&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=pallida&search_type%5Bcultivar%5D=contains&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&search_type%5Bhybridizer%5D=contains&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&Search=Search
All of them are 'variegata' with striped foliage (white or yellow stripe). Mine don't have striped foliage.
mgh and charlotteda also posted pics. of i. pallida in this thread (28 April and 4 may). Are ours all the same, different? cousins or sisters?

Seven your red reminds me of ,( unforgettable fire ) just a guess / yo have to remember ID on the net is poss able with very distinct markings . But camera, color monitor color, and tinted eye glass can make what i see totally different than what you see in garden this just give possibilities and you can goggle the names and decide if it looks like yours .
Hi, Tazzy
Are there only 2 varigated iris? I have the white striped one. It should bloom this week. We went to an arboritum on Tuesday and I saw a huge clump of the yellow stripe.
It caught my eye across the garden.
Teresa
there are two i know of that are cross and morden but they are not pallidia now , but species X ? I think ot just TB . Enmsinger and kaspek have one to two intro. of striped foliage
mgh thats Dauntless (TB )
Cool! Thanks, Tazzy!
charlotteda, mgh and whoever else has got I. Pallida (unvariegated - ordinary green foliage):
I made a PlantFiles entry for it. Please add your pics!!

Cool, thanks for letting me know. I just added them....they should be up in a few days.
Charlotteda, I have an iris that smells like grape soda too. I wonder if they are related somehow? I have a picture, but it's 35 mm film. As soon as it blooms I will use th digital camera on it this time. It seems strange that it hasn't bloommed yet. I'm beginning to wonder about it. It's about 18 " tall, the leaves are solid green and the blooms are a deep blue. It doesn't have the tall standards though, so I don't know which class it is.
If I understand correctly the l. pallida can be several different colors? I have the light purple and a white too.
Trying to get even an approximate ID on some of these has at least taught me alot about iris colors and markings.
mgh: A former neighbor gave me two really old groups of irises. They came from a woman, who died in 1979 at 95, and she had brought them from Germany when she came here to live. I have no idea of the names.
That's really neat, Pirl. Are they blooming yet? Do you have any pics of them? I would love to see what you have. My historics were given to me in a trade last year. I am very glad to have them.....I think I like them better than the newer ones.
I wonder if Tazzy knows what Silverfluter's iris is: deep blue (rather than purple) plus just 18" doesn't sound like I. pallida. But is there another that has the grape scent?
charlotteda, do you have a white pallida that has regular green foliage? I think the PF has an alba pallida entry, but with variegated foliage. If your white has solid green foliage, and you're sure it's pallida, it would be great if you could add a pic to the PF entry I started. (mgh - looking forward to seeing your pics there. Should be there soon!).
I do not know what she has but want some . its got to be first cousin to pallida to have that smell and form . there are a lot that havent been probaly recored yet this may be one . love to get hands on some of it,
I have 2 that smell like grape soda. One is taller than the other, and I believe the tall one has an orange beard and the other white. I should be able to post pics in just a few days.
"I do not know what she has but want some". Best answer Tazzy!!! :-)
sounds like there's a whole grape-group showing up as we talk about them. Looking forward to your pics Moby!
I wonder if there are irises that smell like grapes that are not pallida. What would they say if we called them up and said can you give me a list of all your irises that smell like grapes? Would they say we are nuts?
maybe, but if they are folks who sell irises, they may also patiently answer!! Good idea silverfluter. I guess it would have to be some place that is strong on historics, since all of these seem to be the old ones.
I did look at the HIPS site and a few others and didn't see a whole lot of information on pallida. But I might have missed some too.
paani, we'll be in your neck of the woods this weekend, well close to it. We are picking up our daughter from Cottey College in Nevada this Sunday. I hope to go to an iris nursery called Argyle's either on the way up or back. If you know of any others between Fredericksburg and Nevada I'd like to hear about them. I think we'll take I35 through Dallas and then cut across the tip of OK and into Missouri.
paani,
At this point, I'm not sure of anything :)
But I do believe that this is a white pallida and it does have the regular green foliage. I visited an elderly lady this weekend who had this white blooming in her iris bed and I got one since I did not have a white that blooms right now. It is very tall.
the white pallida is a joy and pretty rare the roofers stepped on mine so i got no Bloom but its a live for next year .
Tazzy, OK where did you order from this fall. Your fabulous space ager must have a name and if it's new, you should be able to tell by the price on the invoice :-)
There are several Purple Iris that smell like grape. 'Moby Grape' is a relatively new one, but either Tazzy or Laurie know the name of the older one. I forget. You should get them in on the grape game.
