Thanks Trois my buddy!
Tis the season
Tazzy, I've been looking at these great MTB and IB iris pics and wondering if they would do well in my area. We have very hot summers and usually mild winters.
I read the SDB iris do better with a cold winter, do the IB and MTB iris need the cold also? Thanks.
Sandy
guess not
we had no winter and no rain since Oct , we are in bad drought with record breaking highs last 6 mo.
My MTB and IB should bloom about the 20th. here in Okla.they are very early but not one SDB or MDB has bloomed and now is there bloom period for Okla.
Crazy weather tornados all evening and grass fires all over State .No major damge with the storms . but the hifgh wind stired up grass fires that burned a lot of homes in the Okla city area
Thanks tazzy. I wish I could send our rain to you. The farmers here may lose crops because we've had too much rain.
Sandy
Oooh...seven, that's fantastic! This is my first year having them, and I can't wait to see if some of them bloom!
Do you happen to know the name of that one?
7s- that's beautiful!!!!!!!!!
belinda
Beautiful PCI. I've got more LA's blooming and will get pictures, ooohhh and my first spuria opened up today. Three more weeks and the garden will be in full bloom...yipppppeeeeee!
That's a cute one, Tazzy!
I love your pci seven sisters. It's so rich looking.
flower frenzy, sorry it is another that was unregistered!
couple years ago the nursery had these on sale for 2 or 3 bucks each and they had all kinds. i was feeling cheap at the time and only bought 4. can you believe it???!
i think this year i'm gonna go for Ghio's landscape special--50 kinds (unnamed) for $58!
tatyana
Well, it's gorgeous...name or not! I wish I could buy from Ghio. He has the most wonderful selection. PCI don't like to be moved, though. I'm afraid that the time they spend out of the ground plus the climate change tends to be fatal for most of the ones I've ordered out of CA. I usually purchase mine through Aitken's Salmon Creek or Wildwood Gardens.
I did Ghio's landscape special last year and they were nice big plants. I lost very few (3 out of the 25 I kept - I shared an order) especially considering how picky PCI are about moving. They are blooming this spring too and I'm very excited. I'll look forward to your photos next year.
I did share my purchase with someone else and I don't know how his did. Some I thought I lost are just coming back now though.
lol, good thing i didn't know they don't like being moved--i've moved mine lots of times and they always survive! the only real setback has been gophers and moles, i had so many fans (is that what we call them?) which have dwindled down to just a few after the critters got em. the only one that's going crazy still is the 'apricot/raspberry'... which i would love to share! : )
doss, want to meet me at Nola's sometime for a garden tour? they bought Leota's so they should be quite a sight this year!!
I'd love to. I don't drive so I will have to find someone to drive me down. Send dmail and let me know what works for you. Love Apricot Raspberry. You do have the perfect climate for PCI so I guess that they are just as happy as clams and so are the critters you've been feeding them to.
MIne are just getting a lot of buds but it's their first year in the ground.
That is really lovely! Ghio did promise that the seedlings would be better or as good as named varieties. And they did bloom first year for us George. I couldn't be happier. Aren't they fun surprises?
OK Seven sisters, when is the best time to go? And thanks for the ride George!
It looks like it should be soon http://www.walking-p-bar.com/shopsite/Iris%20Garden%20Tour.html They just opened for tours yesterday.
I'm going to set up a thread for this visit in the California Forum. Doesn't that sound like fun? I'll see you there George and sevensisters.
You have Dmail George and sevensisters.
george: yum! is it really that blue??? : )
Love that one, doss!
Laura
Who says you can't mess with Mother Nature?
Gorgeous
Potemup: I want to Thank you for starting this thread. I never knew these EXISTED! LOL. Now my hunt will begin.................
Flowerfrenzy: thanks for posting that link to Leonine Iris. Wow, what a selection.
Finally, do you all recommend buying online (shipping) or local. Seems these are tempermental about being moved?
Can't wait to try these.
If you can find potted plants, in bloom, that is what I would consider best. Mine have just started to come into bloom. The alternative to that is bare root in Late Nov or December.
Ok, good info. Thanks again.
George, where have you bought your PCI?
There are two main places to buy PCI on line that I know of.
http://www.allthingsiris.com/
and Bayview Gardens (you have to write for a catalog)
http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/520/
Does anyone know anyone else?
