Pacific Coast Iris (Iris douglasiana) are coming into bloom now. Seems like I just can't get enough.
Tis the season
They are beautiful, do you have any more?
WOW!! Whats the name of that one?!
Most of these are unnamed hybrids I have purchased. My wife and I have made up names for them, like Cinnamon Raspberry, Burgundy Bronze, Amethyst Lace, Lavender Mist, Moon's Blush and Mellow Yellow.
Dang I was hoping I could go buy that one. Beautiful. Lucky you to have such purtyfulness already. My neighbors even have daffodils and crocus blooming and my yard still looks blah. Cant believe it, but then again thier front yards get most of the days sun and most of my front yard dosnt really start getting good sun till late morning.
they're all beautiful. just wish they would grow in ohio.
the only way we can grow them here in Okla . is as annuals . they are so beautiful . i must do that next year start from seed and using greenhouse will help .
I am not familiar with this type of iris. Would they grow on the gulf coast of Texas? They are beautiful.
George those are just lovely! Thanks for sharing them.
George, do you buy them as seeds or as seedlings or just as unnamed plants? I'm very interested in buying some from BayView this year. They sure are beauties. How much shade will they tolerate here?
Thanks
I see them in the parkway strips around town, i.e. full sun. I have them under birch trees, so they get about 4-6 hours of sun during the winter, but are pretty much shaded the rest of the year. I purchased some at an iris show last year, labels like PCH-00-1D. Sloat's just had them on sale and they were in bloom so I bought 9. They seem to like my partial shade location, while a very avid iris grower 2 blocks away has had no luck with them. There is a grower in Fort Bragg. One of these days I will make it up there to see his in bloom.
The first time I tried dividing them, I pretty much killed that one. Guess I shoulda read the book first. I thought they would be rather dormant during the early summer, but they should be done in November-December, just as they are starting new growth.
There is also a grower in Santa Cruz. You can get seeds and unmarked seedlings from him for terrific prices. I have a lot of shade in my garden and I've wanted to try these for a long while. The ones you have are really beautiful. Thanks for the information.
is that Joe Ghio ?
Yes it is, do you have his catalog? - it's out this spring.
I have just ordered three of the most beautiful Iris I have ever seen from the Iris Gallery in Ft Bragg, Calif. They are Pacific Coast Iris hybrids. I don't remember specifically which cultivars I have coming but choosing just a few was one of the hardest things I have done in a long time. Had no choice - didn't have the money for any more - I'm sure I'm not alone with that problem. (Smile!) I like most of the Iris species and hybrids but I think I have become addicted to PC Iris even before I have gotten any. George, as I live only a few hundred miles north of you in an area where some of the PC Iris grow naturally, I have hopes that I won't prove to be too deadly(I am a neophyte Iris grower and will be making my share or more of mistakes.) In the meantime, I agree with you, I'd love to see the Iris Gallery in person some day. Dotti
yes i got it,now must find it and oder some seeds , LOL
Contact me in November and I may be able to provide some divisions. I will collect seed this year. I have on PCI that grew from seed stolen from Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco.
Thanks, Potemup
It's so much fun to be offered Iris from somewhere that I can actually receive them (ie. within CA) . You're the closest person I've met on DG. I could even pick them up! My husband flies gliders out of Hayward and my sister lives there too.
Come on by anytime. Not too long ago your husband could have flown out of Fremont http://members.tripod.com/airfields_freeman/CA/Airfields_CA_SanJose.htm#fremont The Sky Sailing airport was right near the drag strip. All are now just part of history. I live in part of what was the California Nursery http://www.fremontica.com/roadside/cnco.htm
Ptemup--Thanks for sharing your beauties!
Beauties all.
trois
You do live right there. He used to fly out of Fremont. He can't use Palo Alto because his wings are too wide for the taxi way. San Carlos won't let him land without power. So Hayward has been very cooperative and he has been able to get a hanger there - not an easy task in the valley. Since his glider is motorized he doesn't need a tow or he'd have to go to Hollister. And he flies out of Minden Nevada when he can. It's a world class gliding area.
Do you glide as well as grow Iris?
Very pretty.
DOSS -I only glide on the ice, when it hasn't been sanded. ;-}
I've just been in Fremont for forty years and remember some of the old assets we had.
Thanks all for the kind words on our Left Coast beauties.
You can't get enough? Do you know about Ghio's landscape special? 50 seedlings for $58.00. He has a good deal on his introductions too. You can be rolling in Pacificas.
Shame on you! I was just going through withdrawal and you had to throw that at me!
You can ask anyone here on the iris forum. I'm the devil in disguise. I didn't know that you were going through withdrawal though. I'm not one to be a codependent. Well, it's not true, I am. I confess. I jes caint hep my lil ol sef.
Oh Doss, you're an angel....you just happen to have horns holding up your halo! lol
Wait!!! I've been maligned. Wasn't the beginning of this thread, "I want more and more and more?" I knew I wasn't crazy. You set me up and I took the bait.
Have I become the scapegoat here for people's unbridled greed for iris? Hey, it's OK, I'll take the rap gladly. It could always be worse. And I do need something to hold up my halo so it doesn't end up around my neck. (LOL)
I know, I know. We're all addicts and none of us wants to stop...
