Arilbred Irises - are beauties too!

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Incredible beauty! I only have 2 Arilbred iris & they're new. We'll see how they do when spring finally comes here in the Midwest.

Which 2 did you get Wanda?

Okay, I'm dying here. Who is a good source for arilbreds?

Oro Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

VERY nice photos Neil!! By any chance has Lady Mohr ever rebloomed for you? Have you had it very long? It rebloomed for me last fall/early winter, but I'm not sure if it was a fluke of nature or not?

NoH20 - earlier in the thread there are a number of links listed that will take you to some trusted, very good sources! They'll send you some good sized arilbred rhizomes. You may wish to e-mail them and ask them for some of THEIR advice for growing them as well. There are so many nice ones to choose from.

These are all so exotic. There is nothing else like them, is there?

I posted this somewhere else but it's arilbred 'Energizer'

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Margie, I will check those out. I am glad you mentioned asking them for advice on growing them in my area. I never would have thought of that (duh!)

Doss, that 'Energizer' is a knockout. How are your babies doing? My neighbor had a litter of 4 Cavaliers several months ago. Talk about adorable. One of the females caught pneumonia and spent a few days at the vets when she was less than 2 weeks old. She lost weight and never did catch up to the others when she got home. But even though she is the smallest she is definitely the feistiest and the alpha of the pack. She is like the Energizer bunny - she just keeps going and going and going.... LOL

Nashville, TN(Zone 7a)

Hi Margie-

I only got Lady Mohr two summers ago, so last year was it's first time blooming for me. My mother grew it in the 70's and I don't remember it ever reblooming for her (actually I don't remember anything ever reblooming back then.......)

Neil

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Margie-- I'll have to uncover the area and see if they made it thru the winter. Chilly outside and I've been working slowly at it. I don't know if the arielbred made it or not.

Tazzy, I must be getting closer to your exhalted level. Looks like I might have killed a few things over the winter too! :)

Stanford, CA(Zone 9b)

My pups are doing fine. Your friend's sick one will grow and catch up for sure. Zora was the runt of the litter and ended up a totally respectable size. There's always an energizer bunny in every litter. Now give me the puppy that always wants to sit in your lap. That's about my speed!

I have a couple more arilbreds but I don't know if they will bloom this year. The TBs are getting flower stalks like crazy so it may be too late for them and I just put them in last fall.

Spartanburg, SC

Enjoyed the pics so much. My ABs are in large tubs. This is the 2nd year for most of them. Have not done anything to them since they bloomed last year, but the fans look great . Should I fertilize now?

Newfoundland, NJ

Can someone tell me what a Cavalier is? I am guessing it is not an iris...if it went to the Vets :)
Laetitai

Stanford, CA(Zone 9b)

Sorry, it's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and you are right! I have two. It's not an iris. It's a sweet little lap dog. Somehow a question about my sweet pups showed up here - sorry that we hijacked the thread a little. But, hey! No reason someone can't hybridize an iris and call it 'Cavalier'.

Oro Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

Fran99 - I fertilize my arilbreds just before they bloom, again after they have finished blooming, and once again in the fall of the year. That keeps them plenty happy! :-) I use the same fertilizers that I use for my Tall beardeds, but not quite as heavy because most arilbreds are smaller plants.

Doss which other arilbreds do you have? By the way, I think "Cavalier" would be a sweet name for an iris! :-)

Here is another arilbred I posted elsewhere.

Code Talker and

I may buy some more this season. They are just breathtaking. Or perhaps next year. I've put a lot into my garden this year. I need something to look forward to in the future!

Thanks for the fertilizer info. If you will scroll up to April 27,2005 you will see the pics of the ones that bloomed last year - Capitola, Jewel of Omar, Bangladesh and Oyez (several days later). Moon Spot and Magnificent Obsession didn't bloom and I don't know if they died out. I ordered a few more for this year and have my fingers crossed that they will thrive. I saw a bud on something today so am getting excited!

Another nice thing about arilbreds (at least here in TN) is that they bloom early. My Lady Mohr has several buds showing. So I should begin having flowers in two weeks or so, followed by the sdb's and then the tb's. A nice way to have a longer season.

You really should try a couple in your garden and see how they do.

Take a look at how well Fancy Work looks today!!! For an arilbred it has quite a few blooms per stalk too.

That bunch is stunning Margie - you always do such a good job of photographing clumps. I wish that there were more. It's really a helpful thing.

If Code Talker blooms this year, I'd be happy to post it and let you know. We'll have to wait and see.......

Coshocton, OH(Zone 6a)

margie ~ your picture of fancy work is beautiful.

i planted 11 arilbreds last fall and i was out in the garden today, they are doing great. what kind of fertilizer do you use?

belinda

Oro Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

Doss,

Thank you for your kind comments. I love photographing irises, and I love viewing other people's photographs of irises as well. A clump view tells a lot about an iris: it's vigor, and how it displays in the garden. What I like up about upclose photos is that one can see detailed patterns and form. To get a good understanding of how an iris may look like in your garden (before one buys it) is seeing both "up-close" and "in a clump" pictures.

Belinda,

I feed my aribreds the same mixture fertilizer I do my tall beardeds. . I basically use Colorburst (15-30-15), cottonseed meal, alfalfa meal, and triple super phosphate. I buy all these and then make my own mix for the fall. In the spring - - I'll use a liquid fertilizer....................Bloom Booster (10-52-10) made by Miracle gro. Blossom Booster (10-5010) by Peters is basically the same - only by a different company.

I don't this feeding religiously. Sometimes I'll skip their feeding and they seem to fine anyway. :-)
