Belinda, I like both of those a lot too. The coloring is fascinating on them. So far, they have been pretty good growers too.
Arilbred Irises - are beauties too!
Great Margie, thanks a lot! It's France and they got even Vera Marina and many others, great!
I thought you just might like that John. (smiles)
I have one sad little orphan onco seedling on my table, One seed out of 6. Think I wasn't looking after them properly.
In Victoria BC, zone 8, had some arilbreds which lived right up against the house in pots, so no rain. Should have brought them with me to Manitoba because they were not looked after and died.
Great excitement. What I thought was a dead prismatica has 4 shoots. Just shows that you should never give up.
Do love arilbreds. Lovely pictures Margie.

My favorites are: Queen Sheba, Vera Marina, Domingo, and Desert Fire. They are all beautiful. I also have some Siberians and Bearded. I also have a walking iris which was given to me in a trade and I wouldn't part with it for anything. Iris are so rewarding. You have a very nice collection might I add. The iris below is one of my favorites. Wish I knew what the name was.
Ginny, thank you.............and good luck on your iris endevours. So glad to hear your prismatica is alive and well.
NJBGardener, I know exactly what you mean when you say "Iris are so rewarding." I wish I could help you on the name of that one, but it's the first time I've seen this one you are growing. Very nice coloring on it. :-)

I vote for Bagdad's Folly,'Queen Sheba'& Persian Padishah. Hmmm My taste seems to have an Arabian Nights theme tonight.
Sounds like Iowa would not be a good choice for them We have hot , humid summers & very wet springs/falls. Great for growing corn and most perennials. My TBs, IBs, MTB, & SDB s do well here.
Here's a website with more pictures of Arilbreds on it. I've noticed that Mid-America has a lot of them for sale (for example, "Sunset Trail") but no pictures.

Nicholl's has three very beautiful Arilbreds on sale (with pictures) at:

Sharon McAllister hybridizes arilbreds. She had LOADS AND LOADS of Arilbred PHOTOS to look at, including her seedlings.

I don't think she sells, but I'm sure she could tell you where to purchase some of these if you are interested.

Angel Fire and Volunteer Fireman are incredible! Thanks for posting these pictures.
Would love to come see you sometime. I live Northwest. Call me. My number is 797-9800. Joanie in Tucson.
Love all of them! Especially Queen Sheba, Onlooker & Bagdad's Folly. I ordered several OGB and OB- from Willow Bend this past fall and planted them in large pots with sharp drainage. I also ordered large garden umbrellas to keep the rain off in summer. This is really an experiment for me because of rainfall & the humidity here in SC. But 2 days ago I noticed 5 buds and am really excited. Will try to post the pics.

My favorite of all of them is "Silent Tears". Wonder if they would grow in Nebraska?
Susan
It's too bad this area usually gets almost twice as much rain as the arilbreds seem to need, otherwise I would want to get at least one of each pictured cultivar. They are just lovely. I can't decided which is prettiest. Dotti
You know, I think that some of the historics look so much like Arilbreds. You might take a peek. I haven't looked at superstition or Argyle Acres yet but I've found some names here.

Thanks for the link, Doss. The veination does remind you of the Aril breds.
I think the one I posted as "At Last" is " Jewel of Omar". Sorry for the error. Since this is my first bloom year with these, I have only the photos of my order to go by.
That is a really lovely Iris. I just ordered my first Arilbreds for fall. I'm thrilled to be trying something new. Are you growing them in pots?
Bangladesh bloomed today. Got a little frayed by the rain. What did U order for the fall, Doss? Yes, mine are in pots - actually large plastic wash tubs- with holes in the bottom. I also put in sand and medium grade gravel for sharp drainage mixed with a little potting soil. I have one more bloom stalk and after it blooms, I will set up the umbrellas to keep any more rain off. The pots are on a cement patio which will hopefully keep the humidity at bay.
I ordered 3 'Energizer'. I thought that I'd start with one clump and see how it went.

Is there some website that explains the different classes and types of iris. I'm just beginning to get interested in them and I have many questions.
Welcome silverfluter!
A good start might be to browse through the iris city gardens web site
http://www.iriscitygardens.com/toc.html
Or there's All Things Iris. They don't carry Bearded Iris but they carry about every other kind.
http://www.allthingsiris.com/louisianairis.html
Then feel free to start a thread here and ask any questions you have. Or you can start by asking specific questions on a new thread and see the sites later. There is another site that has Arilbreds, Historic, and all types of bearded Iris but no culture information.
If you want to order you have to buy the catalog and we can tell you how to do that, or you can wait for trades - and I really don't know how they work, but if you go to the trading forum and hang out for awhile you'll find it useful.

This is by no means a complete list - it's just a sliver of what's out there. Happy hunting!
Doss, thanks for the info. Very interesting websites. I am trying to figure out exactly what makes it a LA iris or a German iris or whatever. What characteristics does an iris have to have to be in a certain class?
German Iris is another name for Bearded Iris. Lousiana, Dutch (bulbous), Siberian (the kind you get in the florist shop), and Japanese Iris are not bearded Iris - there are others including the Arilbreds and other Iris crosses. A lot of the difference is in culture and zone. Beardeds like dry feet and one of the worst problems they have is root rot. Lousiana and Japanese like damp feet and can be grown in water although they can take some varied situations. Other than that it is really a difference if form. I'm going to start a thread for you where other people can discuss this with you. They won't find you here.
Go to the link and then click "Watch thread". I'll bet you get a lot of good answers.

Let me know if this doesn't work for you.
I think it's interesting that only the beard-less irises are native to North America. I had some lovely I. Crista untill the lawn mower man ran over them. :-(
My poor sister can't keep anything in her yard because her DH mows over them too. Some people just don't get it. Sorry about your I. Crista.
I have the solution to that---I DON'T LET MY DH MOW! I Let him use the snowblower when my gardens are safely sleeping.
Looks like your dog like to chat with the flowers Fran. Do you know the name of your Arilbred? It's beautiful.
Oyez is the last 2 ABs. The background color on the falls, which is a pale yellow, doesn't show up well in the pics. And the flower is small- about about 3" X 5". But I like it. The coloring is unique.Good luck, Doss, with your Energizer. Are you doing ground or pots?
I didn't get the 'Oyez' Fran, sorry. I don't do any pots if I can help it. I do have some with Hostas in them under my Walnut trees where not much wants to grow. I have to have things on a watering system or they don't do very well here. We get no rain from April to November and I'm not very disciplined. Although the Arilbreds will like the dryer weather and after the first year will be happy with neglect. I do have some things that need individual watering like the first year Dahlias and sometimes they need it when it's hot. I'm putting in some LA's this fall so I'm going to have to figure it out. Are you a pot grower? :-)
Not really a pot grower now ( although I did do it once. And gave the plant to a friend. I don't think she let it grow to it's full potential before before she made brownies). :-) The only reason I've potted these ABs is so I can control their enviromnent better. It's normally very humid here, but I hope the cement on the patio will keep them drier throughout the year. Moon Spot & Magnificent Obsession didn't bloom and the vegative growth looks weak. But I'm addicted now, especially after Oyez flowered, so I have ordered more - Kiosk, Sarah Tash, Martha Mia And Ester - The Queen. When will you get Energizer?
Energizer will come with all of my beardeds - in July. I'll have a very busy month. Luckily the LA's, Pacific Coast Iris and some others will all be sent separately. I'll have to find a spot for the Arilbreds that the sprinklers don't hit. I don't think that it will be a problem though.
Beautiful photos Fran! Thanks for sharing them.
I'm bumping this beauty. We're back in the season again!
