Asclepias Tuberosa

Mary-merrymath, D-mail me some colors that you like. I will try to send at least a couple of varieties of your favorite colors. I have some left from last year as well, and I will send some of those too. No sense throwing them away since I've read that daylily seeds stay viable for at least a couple of years. I will mark them as to year of harvest so you will know. If not winter sowing them, I would refrigerate them for 6 weeks before planting them. It will help in germenation.

On the Asclepisa tuberosa, if you are like me, you tend to save seeds sometimes. These should be used this coming year. I understand that they need to be fresh, and I just harvested them yesterday. I sent 500 to a woman in Eastern PA who has a greenhouse and she told me that it is very important that they are fresh seeds.

Pansy seeds only last a year, and Delphiniums and Gerbera Daisy seeds need to be fresh as well. I make notes of this info as I run across it.

Linda

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Delph's are good to go by winter sowing out side right now.
I have the best luck doing this with that seed. Some of the time I split it and do half out side and half in the greenhouse.

Maxine

Thank you Linda! =)

Everett, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm gathering and trying to clean some Lavatera seed. If it seems quite dry by the time the Robin passes me, I'll put a good bit into the general bag.

Does any one have spare red or orange zinnias? F2 or F3 are fine for me, I'll be cross-breeding them with other hybrid-hybrids. Mixed-pollen parents are OK too. Chaff is just fine.

I'm especially looking for Zinnias with a bloom form like a small Crackerjack Marigold or garden Mum ... spherical or thimble-shaped, tighly curled petals. More like a golf ball than a daisy.

I found these variety names in the colors I'm looking for:
red / scarlet / cerise
Zinnia 'Cherry Queen'
'Profusion Double Cherry'
Zinnia 'Sun Red'
'Red Cap' & shape
'Scarlet Ruffles'
Zinnia 'Big Red'
Zinnia 'Scarlet Flame'
Zinnia 'Benary's Giant Deep Red'
Zinnia 'Dreamland Red'

orange
'Double Zahara Fire'
Zinnia 'Benary's Giant Orange'
'Profusion Fire'
Dahlia-flowered Zinnia 'Will Rogers'
Zinnia 'Magellan Scarlet'

These seem to have somewhat the bloom shape I'm looking for:
dreamland series ™
? Magellan series (Persian carpet mix?)
Zinnia 'Exquisite'
Zinnia 'Benary's Giant Bright Pink'
Scabious Flowered Zinnia 'Scabiosaflora Mix'
Mexican Zinnia, Narrow-leaved Zinnia Zinnia haageana 'Aztec Sunset'

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

There are a few packs of zinnia'z in the robin besides the big baggie of mixed ones i have collected that will be in the robin .

I;m fumming right now at ups they were to deliver a mattress I ordered for my dad's bed, my brother came over took out the old one so now here it is 2 hr's before dad goes to bed & there is no mattress on his bed .

delivery was to be today so the tracking # says . they sure better get here soon .

well you all have a great evening
susie

Barbourville, KY(Zone 7a)

Rick,
Have a look at the Oklahoma series and let me know if you would like white and/or pink. I think they have the flower form you are looking for. Since you are going around the second time I can add some for you when the robin get's to me.
I have Persian Carpet already packaged to put in when I get the box. I can include a separate pack for you.
I also have some isolated F2's from the scabious flowered Candy Mix.
Alana

Everett, WA(Zone 8a)

Alana,

I would really appreciate your scabious flowered Candy Mix F2's. Thank you! I already have Persian Carpet..

The Oklahoma Series Zinnias do have the exact flower form I'm trying to reach in orange or red! I appr4eciate your pointing them out to me. Could I have a few pink ones? Thank you!

There are 3 or 4 types of wild Morning Glories setting seed. The blue Mist Flowers showed themselves last week.

Uhh-ohh. Carolyn, I was about to ask you to remember to remind me which salivias you wanted after Jonna's seeds arrived but it sounds like we're equally organized.

I have a scrap of paper that says "lobellia, coral nymph, viridis and maybe nemoroso".

With luck, Jonna's seeds will arrive before I lose the remaining vestiges of my mind. This is my first big Round Robin, and the excitement is surprisingly like Christmas morning.

Since I keep losing it, here is her website again:

Hi all!

I did snip some Cockscombs and there were some seeds already. I guess I was looking in the wrong place for the seeds. I am allowing them to dry. Maybe I am making this harder than it has to be but I am having a heck of a time removing all the chaff. I don't know if I have more seeds than I need or I'm making it too difficult.

I have been snipping off the blooms and allowing the seeds to dry inside the brown sandwich bags. I thought this way would be easier. I just write the names on the bags and let them dry. Removing the chaff is pretty time comsuming. Any short cuts?

Everett, WA(Zone 8a)

Susie:

You bet, I've become a seed-aholic. Until recently, I was a seed trading virgin, but now I've gone around the bend or over the top. Too late!

Anita,

No, I don't have any shortcuts that work well or fast when the seed and chaff are around the same size. But here is what I've tried or heard about.

1.
I've tried screening out all the chaff that's larger or smaller than the seed, but it's still more than half chaff mixed with the seed. It's easy to get rid of the big chaff and pods this way.

You can also take the screened seeds+chaff, and rub them hard while the chaff is very dry, and re-screen it to reduce the amount of chaff remaining.

Screens (wire cloth in various mesh sizes) are easiest to use when you cut them to circles and push them into PVC pipe adapters that have a funnel section and an inner rim. For a dollar or three each, get a few 3" or 4"
PVC DWV Sewer & Drain Adapters
and a flat end cap if you can find one.

Nest them together, fine mesh sizes at the bottom of the stack, add mix to the top stage, shake for 20 seconds, and then one screen will retain 90% of the seeds, plus chaff of that size. Rub it again to break up as much chaff as you can, and sift again.

This idea was a gift from DG member katlien:
seed sieves
http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/Katlian/10997/

Or maybe pick one size jar to work with, and crimp every piece of screen to fit the mouth of that jar. Use only one size mesh at a time, but you don't have to buy the DWV adapters.

(It helps to use one mesh to remove bigger chaff, then another size to remove smaller chaff.)

Wire cloth can be bougth from MSC hardware online, in 12" squares.
Some people have found a variety of sizes of window screening, but I think that is mostly close to 16 mesh.

Kitchen strainers and colanders will give you 1-2 sizes of mesh.
Someone suggested spice bottles with pierced shaker lids.
You could drill holes of any size you wnat into metal or plastic jar lids.

I'm going to put a few 4" wire cloth squares into the Round Robin.
Someday I'm going to buy some 8 mesh and/or 12 mesh and/or 14 mesh and/or 20 mesh to supplement the sizes I have.

2.
I've tried puffing the chaff away.

I like to do it in a deep broad bowl, first letting everything settle to one edge, then blow some of the chaff (and a few seeds) to the other edge of the bowl. Then I use my thumb to brush chaff away, over the edge, leaving seeds behind. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

I still have 1/2 chaff and half seeds, and never quite know if I've blown some away and didn't notice. Many people reccomend "blowing chaff away", especially outdoors in a gentle breeze.

3.
With dense, round seeds, on a clean dry plate, you can ROLL some seeds away from the chaff, brush those seeds off the plate and into a bowl of mostly-clean seed, and then do it again and again.

4.
If the air is dry enough to encourage static cling, you can get a little chaff dust to cling to the plate after you pour all the seeds off. Might as well brush that dust into the discard heap.

5.
You can also, if your hands are steady, brush big chaff away from small seeds, or big seeds away from small chaff, with a cosmetic brush, paint brush, or credit card or piece of cardboard.

6.
I read about this but have not tried it: floating away the chaff and dead seeds:

"Most viable seeds (except very tiny ones) will sink in water. Usually the chaff floats, as do the duds, so you can pour off the stuff floating on the surface and get rid of dirt, chaff, and bad seeds."
...
"Use clear glass jars filled with clean water. Add your seeds and a drop of liquid soap to break the surface tension, or many seeds will just sit on top. Then watch the good seeds sink. Pour off the floating chaff, rinse a couple of times, then dump the clean seeds onto a coffee filter or paper plate to dry."

Corey

I tried the coneflower and those hurt the worse. Most, I don't have a problem with but the rudbeckia are easy either. LoL

that is what I was afraid of.... thanks

Everett, WA(Zone 8a)

I think I forgot to mention what I spend 90% of my cleraning time doing:

picking out individual seeds

one at a time

with my fingertip

or

plastic-tipped tweezers.

The only shortcut I've found is to toss each seed the minimum possible distance. I fold a piece of paper into a tiny tray and leave that right on the dinner plate I'm using to sort.

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Carolyn, may I have some of your seeds from the butterfly bush, Blue Nano and Black Knight?

Nineveh, NY(Zone 5a)

Ooohh! Carolyn if you have any extra after diamond could you give me a couple of the butterfly bush seeds. Color doesn't matter. =D

I'll add you both to the list.
