Oh my!! Thats hot!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

All of my dark orientals burned up- Sumatra, Mambo, Bloody Ram, Lamb's Blood... here is the same S.G. today... Post Toasties!

Fried OT Cherbourg... new and I won't see first bloom as I will be deadheading all toasties before the evening is out and there will be nothing to see anyway :-(

So sorry! That must be so painful for you.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Fried Oriental Confetti from Faraway Flowers... again, new and sadly gone! Yes, painful, but they should be back next year.

And finally, Fried Green Tomatoes... I'll look over all my tomato vines and remove the likes as they will just rot. I also lost my first ripe cluster of cherry tomatoes, now that bites!! I hope the rest will be ok; there may be heat damage that doesn't show yet. Our peak temp. this week was about 109 deg.

I've spent the week going to work, coming home; then cowering in a corner with the AC. Even had to convince my kitty that she would be better off staying in one room with the AC!

Then there is what I call the champion for heat endurance... drumroll please...it's Bonbini! This was taken Tuesday morning and is in the sun pretty much all day.

Bonbini, same bloom Wed pm, so 2 full days in the hot sun. The color is just a bit faded and absolutely no burning. Bonbini gets my thumbs up and recommendation for those areas where temps like these are the norm.

After a walk around the garden, additional cheers go to Sister of Pizzazz, Sarabande, Black Beauty, Shez of course and Summers End.

Here is Summer's End.

Pixie, yes. But worse! You left out the Red Lily Beetle damage!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I know, it's awful this year....like everything is against me & my lilies!!!!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I don't think it was a good year anywhere for tomatoes.

Those bonbinis sure are goodlooking.

what is w/ the PNW getting 106 deg.????? that's TX, AZ, NM weather lol

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I can't believe those temps out in the PNW. That's hotter than most of what we get here in a bad year. 90s is bad enough. I think in the last week that we have had some small hail that put some holes in some lilies. I'm not complaining. It's just sad how long we wait for these blooms and then to have scorching, beetles, too much rain and the like wreck it, it is just too frustrating. We wait sooooooo long for this season.

I like getting the scorch free list pard. The Queens do pretty well for orientals with all of the heat stress.

Stay cool, stay dry and keep those pictures coming.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

But we are gardeners and so we know that next spring is just around the corner. :) Hope springs eternal for our lilies, peonies, hostas, etc.. :)

Oh yeah, and weeds, too.. :) LOL

Speaking of hope springing... Are any of these gorgeous orientals in the 2-3 ft range??? And reliable??? I've avoided orientals because I've had bad luck with them, but I realize I've got a perfect spot to tuck in a few, so long as they're not more than 3 ft tall. Love those Queen strain lilies, but I think they get very tall, yes?

Have been trying to browse Buggy, Faraway, Summerchase, but all those vstore sites seem to be having server problems.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I don't think I can answer as mine was just planted last fall. It's 2.5ft. this year.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Most my orientals don't get really tall. I've had Casablanca in the ground for three years or so, in full sun and it's not any taller than three feet.

(Zone 5a)

My Casa Blancas are over 6 ft.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Well, there's certainly a world of difference between Lisbon and Cedar Rapids!

They get taller in shade, don't they?

(Zone 5a)

could be the soil, the light, the bulb, who knows...

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

In this field of Casablancas the heights range from 3 to 3.5'.

Oh those are lovely Casa Blancas, Pirl. I like having a few whites here and there in my garden, whether it is lilies or irises.

Wickerparker, one Oriental lily that stays reliably short is Mona Lisa topping out at 2-2.5 ft. Even though it is in afternoon shade here and the lilies around it grow taller and stretch for more light, it stays short.

Well it was so hot the PNWLS canceled the July event which was to have been at Mak's, according to their web site. Even at just 20 miles from me I wouldn't have gone in that heat. It has cooled to 90 today, feels pretty good! I even turned the AC off.

Here is the only bloom of Mambo that opened before the heat hit.

Another cute short one is 'Angelique'. 'After Eight' stays pretty short too. 'Luxurious' is a great Buggy semi-double that is reliable and short and it is from Buggy Crazy ;) You really have lots of choices.

'Casablanca' in full sun gets pretty tall here, at least 5 feet. Do let us know what you select, will you? I always enjoy hearing how things turn out.
