I've ordered from Johhnny's for a couple years now and have always been pleased with their selection and germination rates. I will continue to order from them because shipping is prompt, and if something is backordered they always send an email letting me know and when to expect delivery. Delivery has always been when they say it will arrive too.

I ordered from Johnny's last year with good results. My seeds arrived the same week I ordered them. I like their variety of seeds. But this year has been a whole different scenario. I ordered on-line a week ago. Mid week I received an e-mail informing me that my entire order was being held up because one pack of beans wasn't in stock. And asking if it was ok to wait and send it about the middle of March. Our growing season has started for the early crops. I sent an e-mail reply expressing my disappointment that the rest of my order hadn't been mailed out. I also told them what item to substitute. They acknowledged my e-mail and replied that I still might get my order this week. Seven days from the order date, I received a package from them. It was the one pack of beans that I had requested they substitute. I can't understand how the substitute arrived before the rest of my order. As of today, the bulk of my order hasn't arrived. I have to question the competency of a company that can get your substituted item to you before the rest of your order which they had in stock.

On March 1st, 2005, clod changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:

Here's the update. I received my seeds today. Ten days after I placed the order. After several e-mails denying there was a problem, I received an e-mail yesterday with an apology and an admission that because of human error my order wasn't shipped on time. Then a follow up phone call today to see if my order had arrived. And she said she is mailing me a gift certificate to encourage me to keep using them. That's about as good of customer service as you can get under the circumstances. I'll change my rating to Neutral because it was an honest mistake and they're trying to make amends.

Johnny's continues to have a fantastic selection of veg seeds for my zone 5 garden. I highly recommend the gourmet lettuce mixes and their long day onion seed selection. I ordered row cover and seeds from Johnny's. Even though it's fall, I ordered the seeds so I could get the free crocuses.

Johnny's has a wide selection of row covers to choose from--it took me a while to make up my mind. Same with the seeds, actually.

I received a notification by email both upon receipt of my order and when the order was shipped. Everything arrived in good condition, and the free crocuses were as good as any of the other crocuses I bought this year.

I ordered pumpkin seeds and gourd seeds from Johnny's this year. I really appreciated their timely response to my emails. I propagated everything except the Connecticut Field pumpkins in peat pots and had 100% germination. I direct-seeded the Connecticut Field pumpkins and didn't bother to count the seeds when I did it. All I know is that they totally took over, creating an ocean of pumpkin vines as high as my waist. Everything was very productive, with no hint of virus or stress, and looked even better in person than it did on their web site. I will be a repeat customer.

I ordered seeds in early spring from several seed companies, including Johnny's. Their seeds came quickly and were as ordered. I particularly like the details they give on the seed packet, much better than other company's minimal information. I will definitely order more from them next year.

I ordered again from Johnny's in Feb 2005 and was not disappointed. Seeds arrived quickly and I've again gotten good germination. They continue to be impressive, and I love the details they give on the seed packets -- not generic stuff like Parks but real specific information that is great to have when you're planting.
On October 15th, 2005, EP added the following:

Johnny's bulbs are also very nice and arrive surprisingly fast. Last year I ordered tulips for the garden and hyacinths for forcing. All of them did well, with top size bulbs and blooms. This year I ordered bulbs again on a Sunday and received them Tuesday without any special express. These guys are great. Again, nice quality bulbs.

Every order I have placed with Johnny's has been followed up with fantastic service. My order was shipped quickly, and completely, the packaging sturdy. Johnny's is the real deal. They really are farming up Maine, cultivating and maintaining great seed strains. While their catalog and website are simple, they are very effective. It is very rare to find a website that is able to keep realtime inventory, so it's no surprise that Johnny's doesn't have that function either. I will definitely order from them again and again.

I ordered some seeds at the end of November 2003 from Johnny's.

I got the seeds pretty quickly, but noted that some were packed for 2003, and others were not dated as to what year they were packed for.

I thought it was pretty lame to send last years seeds even though, technically, it was still 2003 there wasn't much chance of me planting them that year.

Maybe things vary state to state as far as regs for selling seeds go. Territorial told me that they aren't allowed to sell last year's seed. I guess that ain't true in Maine.

Whatever.

I'm giving this company a neutral rating this year (with reservations), because it annoys me when a company doesn't keep their website properly up to date. Especially one that is listed in the top 20. Of the several items I ordered (less than 10), one item ended up being unavailable even though it was listed as available on the website. I received no notice to that effect, and only found out when I recieved the seed order. As a result, I had to reorder the seed from someone else I had already ordered from (could have saved on shipping here).

Also, there was one seed that was on backorder. Not such a big deal, but still I wish the website had been up to date and indicated this. Admittedly, my annoyance was somewhat compounded by the other seed listed as available when it is no longer carried. Still, the back order was promptly shipped and I did receive a courteous and prompt response via e-mail when I inquired about it.

On a positive note, the tomato seeds I ordered germinated beautifully.

On February 5th, 2004, Katt_TX added the following:

I also wanted to make it clear that they have a fairly good selection of tomato seeds (nothing fancy, but a variety great solid selections for the aspiring beginner) and list them quite well on the website. The web listing seems to carry many more selections than you'll find in the print catalog.

I have ordered seeds from Johnny's Selected Seeds in the past and have been quite happy.

This year I ordered seeds and some raspberry plants. This is my first year ordering live plants from them and I must say I am a little disappointed. Each company has their own ship dates based on the customer's hardiness zone. My zone is 5 so that equals around April 15th for most catalog companies. Because of where I live, it is not possible to try planting anything until closer to May 15th. I do not like having to store the plants so I called up Johnny's and asked if they could change my ship date to be after May 1st. I am not picky about what day they come just as long as it is not before May. Johnny's said that they cannot take any requests for ship dates. I must accept the shipment on whatever date they decide to send. There was no exception.

I told them to cancel my raspberry order. I have ordered live plants before from companies including Park Seed and Jung's and never had any problem requesting that my shipment be delayed. I was disappointed about the raspberries but do not want to take the chance that these plants arrive earlier than I can use them. I have limited space to store things and 2 small children and a dog that love to destroy anything they can get their hands on (especially anything that mom says "don't touch" to).

I kept the seed order that I placed. They already arrived and in perfect condition just like last year. I would order from them again in a heartbeat but not for live plants - only seeds.

Thank you for preserving the only true Brandywine tomato (Suddath or Quisenberry strain), thank you for introducing Diva, one of the best tasting cucumbers ever and thank you for introducing some of the more exotic leafy greens. But maybe it is time to become the first honest seed supplier. Not every variety is great tasting, excellent, mouth watering etc. Most of your (and others) veggie varieties are mediocre and please, don't push them on novice gardeners.

One question, though - isn't it illegal to sell opium poppy seeds for growing?

Just found the Garden Watchdog site, and thought I would post my experience with Johnny's Selected Seeds (JSS) here... not that another truly positive experience will have much impact.

I am a small fresh-market grower, and have used JSS as the sole seed source for everything except my tomatoes and peppers (I plant varieties not available through JSS) for the past two years, and across multiple orders. Each time, the order has been shipped quickly, with everything as advertised. I took a chance this year with some onion plants (I have always grown from sets or seed in the past) and they arrived in excellent condition, in perfect time for planting in my climate zone.

Even a late-season order received the same attention and immediate shipping that my earlier orders have received. (Their All-Star Gourmet lettuce mix has been such a hit at the local market that I ran short, and had to quickly replenish my stock).

And large quantities of seed are no problem, either! I highly recommend JSS as a seed and plant source.

I am a three year customer of Johnny's. It took me a while to discover them, but they are great. I start hundreds of plants from seed annually, and JSS has very fresh, carefully wrapped seed with extremely high germination rates, with great, detailed instructons (such as ACCURATE time from planting to bloom - rare and very helpful). I grow both their excellent veggies (particularly fabulous lettuce I grow in pots), herbs (check out the gorgeous basils for ornamental use and seasoning) and flowers, an area they are rapidly expanding, coming up with neat exclusives (President Tyler Morning Glories, Salvis Gruppenblau). They have a wonderful ornamental grass selection (stipa, seteceum, pennisetum) a fabulous selection of salvias, and my favorite, ornamental broom corn (grows to seven feet tall in weeks, producing gorgeous tassels). Customer service is very responsive and concerned (I inadvertently double placed an order, which was corrected even before it hit my charge card!) I HIGHLY recommend them.
