Comments regarding Johnny's Selected Seeds

I have been a customer of Johnny's for the past ten years, beginning when I lived in NH. Very knowledgeable and caring staff. Seed germination rate is always listed on the package and you will get at least that. In cases where germination is lower, they include extra seeds. I may be able to find some seeds at a lower price elsewhere, but the consistent quality of Johnny's keeps me a faithful customer.

It's hard to find soybeans locally, so I have purchased them from Johnny's. I love their catalog, and their email newsletter is so personable and informative. They are more than just seed growers... they're animal lovers too. I would order from them in a heartbeat.

I have purchased from Johnny's for many years and the service and products have always been first rate. The order routinely arrives sooner than stated and the germination rate of the seeds is excellent. The order I placed this year arrived in four days.

I visited Johnny's Catalog Store in Winslow, ME, and ordered some seeds I had forgotten. I planted them Saturday night around 8:00 PM and on Monday morning, 36 hous later, I've got germination of cucumber seeds! I have seedling heat mats, which always aid in germination, but I never expected a 36-hour turn around when the seed packet says 3-5 days at proper temps.

I have had this response before with Johnny's seeds. Absolutely outstanding germination rates and terrific customer service. Since it's now happened twice, I thought I'd share my experience with others. Johnny's is a great company to do business with! I can't wait to start pickling!

Based on my hit and miss experiences of the past 3 years I decided to utilize the Watch Dog Top 30 this year. My first selection was to order my vegetable, herb, and a few flowers to start. I was elated that my seeds arrived within 3 days of my internet order. Everything was as ordered and I am very impressed by the extensive information on the seed packets. If the seeds are as good as the service, I will be in heaven!

I am not a beginner gardener but I don't exactly consider myself an advanced gardener either. I've ordered seeds from many different companies and have purchased seeds in stores, but I truly value the information Johnny's provides their customer's. I also trust the seeds I get from them because I've experienced too many problems with other company's seeds. Johnny's prices are higher and there are no gimmicks but in the same aspect I've fallen for the "Gurney's" type gimmicks before and lost A LOT of money. I'm okay with spending more as long as I know what I'm getting. My last order in January arrived within 2 weeks and I'm just waiting on my strawberry plants, which should arrive soon. If not, I might be posting differently in the future. ; )

I got my order today and quite seriously there was an INCEDIBLE amount of seeds per package than listed in the catalog.

May I suggest people who order from the "Top30" on "Daves Garden" report their experience on every order.

Yes, Johnny's is more expensive than many other seed sources and the shipping is definitely pricey BUT their customer service is first rate!

I ordered some seed early on Thursday morning via the phone and they were in my mailbox on Saturday! The whole process was a pleasure and I felt VERY confident ordering with them

I had ordered from Johnny's for many years--up until the past few years. Their prices are very high; I can buy the same varieties from other reputable companies for much less and get the same amount, the same quality, of seed. There were several things I wanted from this years' book, but found them elsewhere. I didn't want to pay shipping for the couple of things I couldn't find anywhere else. Price is the major reason I'm not ordering from Johnny's anymore.

I did have a problem with some supposedly disease-resistant tomatoes from Johnny's; (JTO) those tomatoes were the poorest performing of the 10 or so different varieties I grew! The tomatoes never ripened, just turning a sickly pinky-orange and were hard. The vines sickened and died. When I contacted the company, they expressed dismay, but I never heard from them, no refund, nothing.

Johnny's catalog is beautiful--the culture information is wonderful. (I remember when it was newsprint, and the prices were reasonable.) They are doing a great job of introducing new varieties and have many awards to their credit. I usually grow "Fortex" pole beans that they developed--I've not found a better bean! However, I can buy "Fortex" seeds, same size packet, same quality, for less money at another seed house. I always read Johnny's catalog, mark the things I'd like, hoping their prices will be competitive, but they are always the most expensive. Please cut corners somewhere else and lower your prices, Johnny's, and you'll have me back as a customer, tomatoes notwithstanding!

My wife and I have a rather large garden planned for this season, and we are starting numerous vegatables and flowers from seed. There were a several varieties we couldn't find locally, so we ordered them from Johnny's.

We ordered everything online, and our seeds arrived by mail within a few days. So far the germination rates seem to be quite high, and I'm very pleased with my experience. I'll definately do business with them again, and I'll probably purchase the majority of my garden seeds from them next time around.

Prompt service, and emailed when one seed selection was on back order. I only ordered a few seed packets, but would gladly order from them again.

I ordered several types of vegatable and flower seeds. The order came quickly and packaged well. I will be ordering more in the future.

I have ordered from them the last three years and have never had anything even resembling a slight problem in any facet of their great business. I order from many other fantastic seed companies on a regular basis and am very active in seed trading/exchanging too. I can honestly say and strongly believe that their customer service and committment to offering a guarenteed, quality product cannot be beat.

Their shipping costs tend to be somewhat higher than many other companies(but not talking huge bucks...maybe 1$ or $2) IMO and a cultivar or two might be considered somewhat pricey but it is what it is. With them you get what you pay for and they'll always stand by it. I'll be taking a vacation in Maine this summer, confident I'll have a great time checking out their store and farm.

I have ordered from Johnny's a number of times and have always been happy with them. Their prices are a bit higher, but they do provide a large amount of quality seeds with good germination rates. There have been a few packets that had poor germination and fewer seeds due to the variety, but they were quick to replace them.

I ordered the Pro Am Seedstart Kit. The representative was very nice. I was going to order something else I thought I was going to need to use with the kit and he assured me it was not necessary. Everything I needed was in the kit. That doesn't happen very often! And my package arrived very quickly. I'll definitely buy from them again!

Johnny's had some seeds that I was having a hard time finding anywhere else. Good prices, fast delivery, would order from them again.

I've ordered both seeds and bulbs from Johnny's, and have always received high-quality products. In particular this year, their 14+cm tulip bulbs were huge, as expected, and about 50% heavier than 12+cm bulbs, but priced competitively with their other bulbs.

Over the years I have ordered from a Johnny's a few time and each was a delight. The seeds always arrived in a timely fashion, the orderes were complete, except once when they were out of a seed. In which they refuned my money and provided a $5 coupon. I've had good germination rates with there seed and in fact I'm still using seed I've harvested from the original ordered seeds years later.

First time customer and not a single problem in sight! Ordered some "Islander" pepper seeds and was very pleased. I will certainly be shopping from them again in the future, no question! =) I wish my printed catalogue would hurry up and arrive, though, so I don't have to get online when I want to browse. ;)

2004 was my first year to try Johnny's so I only ordered a few items. Everything was so good (as well as customer service and culture information online) that I ordered all my seeds with the exception of what they didn't carry from Johnny's for the 2005 season. I find their prices to be slightly higher than some of my usual seed sources but the overall quality is so good that I willingly pay it. We have a pretty large garden and a very short growing season so having a high percentage of seeds germinate is important. We are still in danger of frost and the corn didn't get the warm soil it needs to start breaking through because of the prolonged cold nights and nontypical spring rains. We figured it for a loss and were pleasantly surprised when it started popping through last week. We will definately use Johnny's pretreated corn to plant from now on -- 98% germination, WOW!

Astoundingly fast shipping, excellent customer service, premium seeds (very good germ. rates) and great value on seed prices. (I do think the shipping charges are high, but Johnny's is such a joy to deal with that I don't mind so much.) Their website is also excellent...easy to use and immediate email response.

I ordered seeds from Johnny's in 2003, and was pleased enough with the results to order more in 2005.

Tomato, Red Cherry "Matt's Wild Cherry" claims minimum germination 80%, 40 seeds per pack (minipack). I Planted in starters three times now 16 seeds. I have six plants growing. All were started in a most favorable enviroment. Starter potting soil by Miracle Gro, in 2x2 square peat pots with bottom trays, waterered as they should be with gro lights 12 hours a day and heat mats set at 70 degrees F. Not a very good outcome.

Cherry tomatoes by Burpee and by Ferry Morse planted at the same time, same enviroment every seed germinated. So this was the comparison and why I gave Johnny's a "Big Negative" on this specific seed.
