Over the last two years I have had numinous orders with Hirt's Garden. One order was for plants through their website and several seed orders through eBay and from their website and through Amazon.com.

The tomato and pepper plants they sent did not arrive in very good condition but they all survived and thrived. At the time I could not find the varieties I wanted anywhere else and it was a little late to start them from seed. For these reasons I was still pleased with the purchase.

As for seed orders. They have always shipped quickly and my germination rates have been good. I prefer to order their seeds through Amazon.com because on Amazon their shipping is lower at $ 0.79 per pack and if my order is over $ 5.00 shipping is free and I like free.

I ordered two carnivourous plants from Hirt's. They arrived in completely bedraggled condition. One was out of the pot and had been tossed around until every leaf was broken. The other was dried up and bedraggled and completely distressed. When I contacted them they did respond quickly, however were completely uninterested in replacing the plants. I was basically told to "give them proper care and they will thrive." I have been a gardener for 30 years and had I seen plants in this condition in a nursery I would not buy them. I understand the limitations of shipping live plants, but if they can't do it properly, they should not try. Now seeing the large number of negative reviews on this site I am surprised they can stay in business. Instead they continue to take peoples money, offer a poor product and refuse to rectify the situation.

From Hirt's, I bought 4 Giant "Flamenco Queen" amaryllis bulbs, size 34-36cm. I bought them on Ebay. Hirt's sent bulbs that were much smaller, only size 26-28cm. When I called them and told them that they had sent the incorrect size, they told me that they had sent the correct item, that it was the same but smaller, and that they would not pay my shipping cost to return the items. They wanted me to believe that the fact that they had not sent me Giant bulbs, as advertised, but had sent me much smaller bulbs instead was not their problem. They said if I was unhappy with the bulbs that that was my problem and that I, therefore, had to pay for the shipping to return the bulbs. They are refusing to honor their agreement and they are profiting from their mistake.

I've just received what must be at least my 50th order from them in about 10 years and it arrived as usual, very healthy, of average or larger than average size, extremely well packaged and arriving in perfect condition, and it amazingly went from Ohio to my doorstep in Texas in 1-day! I'm a flower and herb gardener, I don't do many veggies, but I would not hesitate in the least to order anything from Hirt's. They have a great track record with me. Good luck and Happy Gardening!

My plants are currently growing in the garden with dozens of peppers and they are extremely hot. No fake delivered to me. I plan to order plants again for planting in 2012.

I purchased two dwarf Blueberry plants from Hirt's on Amazon. I laughed when they arrived because they gave new meaning to the concept of "dwarf" variety. They were beyond tiny for the price. The Tophat's leaves were dead on one third of the plant. The Pink Lemonade arrived with the most significant growth on the branches broken in half. I wrote to request two new plants. They asked for pictures. I obliged. They wrote back that in both cases, this was normal "stress" from shipping! I argued that in that case, the plant being broken at the base of the plant would also meet that criteria. Again, I requested a new plant. They did refund the Pink Lemonade, but when I left feedback about the experience with Amazon, I began to get what I considered abusive emails from this vendor. Just horrible business practice, and of course, I will never buy from them again.

One year wasted on bringing them up to other nursery standards if your lucky. However overall I got what i expected from them. I didn't have any problems to complain about so i don't know how they handle this.

We also bought huckleberry seed, but whatever plant sprouted, it was most certainly not huckleberry/ The berries were utterly unbearable to eat, and I fear, completely poisonous.

Not a single variety of tomato I bought from them sprouted. NEVER EVER BUY FROM THEM!

I ordered three potentilla from Hirt's through Amazon.com and shipping took place very quickly. The plants arrived today in appalling condition -- dried out, spindly, with many yellowed leaves, and lots of roots growing out of the bottom of the containers. In every way, these plants are in deplorable condition. One more day and they would have arrived DOA. I have ordered many plants online over the span of many years, and these plants are some of the worst I have ever encountered. For a cost of nearly $10 each, plus shipping, they were vastly overpriced, even if they had arrived in excellent condition. Plants of this size typically cost around $3.99 in nearly any nursery I have shopped at, even those nurseries whose prices surpass most other places. Instead of covering the soil of the containers with plastic in order to conserve moisture, these plants were shipped with some masking tape applied to the edges of the containers, leaving most of the soil bare. This worthless tape was applied in a sloppy manner -- kind of just stuck here and there along the edges. Why Hirt's bothered to use masking tape is baffling; it served no purpose whatsoever. It was obvious to me that these plants had not been watered prior to shipping and care had not been taken to ensure that they would not be dried out upon receipt of the order. I have no intention of ever ordering another thing from this substandard nursery.

I ordered several small plants via eBay this year, and while they looked OK in the box, about half of them died soon thereafter. They've also stolen many photos from other gardeners around the web, and refuse to answer questions about their plants on eBay. They have some terrible reviews on Amazon too, detailing incorrect orders, unhealthy plants, and slow shipping.

Even worse than their plants dying has been their attitude and customer service. They wanted me to take photos of the dead plants, the surrounding area, and send detailed reports of how/when I planted them. While I understand they have to assume that some plants die due to gardener error (or just weather and bad luck), when about 50% of them die -- some of them right next to perfectly healthy versions -- there is something else wrong. They were extremely rude in email and refused to answer the phone when I tried to call. Will never use them again and urge others to bypass this ebay "superseller".

I ordered several plants from Hirt's on eBay. The order was shipped quickly and the plants were beautiful and packaged well. In fact, they were the best-looking mail order plants I have ever received. Absolutely no damage to any of the plants.

In checking the order, I found that I was missing one of the hellebores I had ordered. No big deal - I contacted them through the eBay messaging system to let them know. I had bought the plants in several separate auctions but paid for them all at one time to combine shipping. Because of that, when I clicked the "Contact Seller" link, the subject line of the message contained information about the most recent auction, a Japanese forest grass, instead of the hellebore. I noticed that and made a special point in the body of the message to specify that it was the hellebore, not the Japanese forest grass, that was missing from the order.

I got a prompt reply that the missing plant would be shipped. It was shipped promptly, but it was a Japanese forest grass, not the missing hellebore. I contacted them again about the mistake and the seller repeatedly blamed me for the error. After a few email exchanges, the seller finally agreed to replace the plant. It was shipped promptly and was in great condition. All the plants I purchased from Hirt's are in the ground and are doing great.

Because of the seller's negative attitude, I didn't feel like I could rate them as a positive. However, the plants were beautiful and packaged well, so they don't deserve a negative. I will most likely order from them again.

I don't really have any complaints against them, ordered some from Amazon, also Ebay.from them. I would glady order from him again. I really like the way he packages his plants, I almost forgot, Picture carnivorus plant which is growing like crazy. I do what he said to do, water it with rain water some and distilled water. I was a bit reluctant to order through Amazon, but the order that arrived 2 days ago had all my plants, and they were in top condition. Gaura and sage are now approx 2 to 3 foot tall, after two months. Honeysuckle is at least 12 inches up my fence and filling out nicely. The Sambucus has been in the ground only a week, but is doing fine. Their prices are very reasonable. Have not had a problem of any kind with this company. Will definitely buy from them again. My first order from Hirt's was placed a few weeks ago and included a Turkey Fig Tree, Vanilla Bean Orchid cutting, and Flowering Quince seeds. I was concerned about ordering from Hirt's because of the negative reviews, but the positive reviews won me over. Two of the fertilizers are back ordered, although one was sent yesterday.

I received my plants in excellent condition within two or three days of placing my order. They were packaged with exceptional care, and I was surprised to find a small animal warming pack had been included and placed near the base of the plants - it was still warm when I opened the box. I've never order plants in the dead of winter, and this unexpected care ensured my plants arrived alive and happy in sub-freezing temps. After a drink of warm water and several days on a plant heating pad with filtered light, I checked their health; I was thrilled to find I had not lost one leaf from the fig tree, and the orchid cutting was strong and firm in its pot. I've had both plants for almost two weeks and the travel stress is non-existent. The Quince seeds will not be planted for another sixty days, but I received detailed instructions on how to do it. I am very happy with my order, the promptness of the delivery, the health of the plants, and the extra steps taken to ensured the plants traveled with as little stress as possible. This was my first order with Hirt's, but it will not my last.

I ordered a packet of "Organic Merlot Looseleaf Lettuce - 450 Seeds" [ASIN: B001H9UOWC] through Amazon in October. Most of the seeds germinated well and are growing nicely. However, about 2/3 of the plants are NOT Merlot lettuce. I have photos of the flats which I can send by email. The plants are okay, but I specifically wanted merlot lettuce because it survived a very harsh winter in Atlanta with the use of row covers when it was below freezing. It got down into the teens or lower and stayed that way for extended periods of time. The merlot lettuce also lasted long into the spring before bolting. And of course it is pretty and healthful. The Merlot lettuce is a burgundy color, while the other is green with a different shaped leaf.

Due to overwhelmingly negative feedback about their seeds, I haven't bought any seeds from Hirts, but plants are a different story! I have ordered several different fruit trees from Hirts to make into bonsai/houseplants, and have never been disappointed. I recently ordered an olive tree from them, and it is now flowering beautifully in its new pot. I just ordered 3 more. They take great care in making sure the plant is secured in its pot during shipping, and even put a warmer in the box that was still warm when the plants arrived. Truly a top-notch company when dealing with plants and trees. It's just the seeds that scare me. :)

A day after I received my olive tree, I noticed that there is peacock mold growing on the bottoms of the leaves. In addition, soft scale insects are all over the stem, and when I went to repot my tree, I found numerous mealy bugs in the soil. Some pesticide and copper-based fungicide are taking care of or have taken care of the problems, but I can tell that the the quality control just isn't there. My olive tree is doing well now just FYI.
I found out they don't grow them there, because when I asked for the specific species of olive tree, they didn't know.
