Comments regarding Oakes Daylilies

This was our first experience ordering online and Oakes made it a fantastic one.

I placed an order for a few one night. Then my wife wanted a few more, so we placed another order the next day. I called Oakes on a Saturday and left a message asking if they could combine the orders so there was only one shipping charge. They called me back on Monday and said that would not be a problem and informed me when they would ship.

To our surprise they were shipped earlier then expected and they sent us an email that gave us the tracking info that when clicked on it automatically gave you the status of the shipment. When we received them we were extremely happy with the quality of what we ordered and the bonus plants they included. The fans were huge and healthy. We couldn't be happier and will definitely order from them again. (In the near future!)

I ordered from this company based on the recommendations from this site, and all I can say is WOW! I ordered the "Select Mixed Daylilies" collection which was supposed to be a group of 10, but I actually got 12, and they were huge- the root balls bigger then my hand, all of them had green growth at the tops and fat, healthy roots. I have never seen such "bare root" plants (which usually look shriveled and dead) these are fantastic, and I cannot wait to see what different colors they are when they start blooming.

I have ordered several times from this company over the years. Always had great service. The plants I received were always bigger and better than anyone else's. Once they sent me the wrong variety but when I contacted them, they promptly replaced with the correct variety and I kept the others at no charge (they also turned out to be beautiful lilies so it was a win-win situation.) Honest and dependable company.

Received my order from Oakes on 3/20/09, containing Catherine Woodbery and Classy Lassy, and planted the large, healthy root systems on 3/21/09. Received in good condition because of their attention to proper packaging. Received bonus Catherine Woodbery. Placed second order today.

I am thrilled with the daylilies I ordered from this company! I am so glad I found Oakes here on Dave's Garden. I love daylilies, but have had problems getting itty bitty or half dead plants from other companies.

Not so with Oakes! The divisions were no smaller than 8" in diameter and I recieved 2 bonus plants which were just as large and healthy and the ones I purchased. I placed a relatively small order just to see how the plants were, but when I'm done with this review I'll be going back to the website to order the rest of the daylilies I was drooling over!

As a picky gardener, let me say I was 100 percent satisfied with my order. Oakes, you have a new lifetime customer!

Received huge divisions! I also received two bonus plants. I would order again from Oakes.

First year to order from Oakes and I was extremely impressed. The plants were huge (as advertised here) and healthy. I will definitely be ordering again. The bonus plants are also nice (and HUGE), as I've never gotten any bonus plants from other companies before.

We ordered five "Leeba Orange Crush" Day lilies from Oakes. We were pleasantly surprised when we received the products. These were fresh large fan-divisions, and were packaged with great care. The "fan-divisions" appeared so fresh, it appeared as if these were dug out from our own garden just a few minutes back. The planting instructions were very clear, and they included an extra "bunch" of the same product. They didn't know that we had the room for exactly five Day Lilies. So we planted the extra one in a 12 inch pot simply for experimentation purposes.

I guess that we are kind of lucky customers. For the first time of our lives we started ordering from mail order companies. Since we did not have any favorite company we decided to split our orders to about eight or nine companies. So far we received the products from five of the companies. We had been very pleased with the products and services of three of them. These are: Oakes, Easy To Grow and Van Engelen.

I received my first order from Oakes Daylilies today. The plants were huge and in excellent condition. My only complaint is that it took me some time to enlarge the planting bed I had prepared in order to accommodate these large, gorgeous plants!

Ordered several daylilies on 7/31/2008, with our order arriving in mid August. All of the daylilies, along with the bonus daylily, were carefully packaged, clearly labeled and the size of the bareroots of each plant was most impressive! Since planting all of these daylilies, they have already grown several inches. We can't wait until next season to seem them in bloom. I would definitely recommend this company to our gardeing friends.

Oh my gosh! I am so excited about the daylilies I purchased from Oakes! I had my eye on a particular variety for a group planting, and when I saw the incredible price Oakes had for that tall, white daylily, I ordered 12. They arrived promptly, carefully packed in a large box, with excelsior (No peanuts - yay!) top and bottom . An enclosed count tag indicated that two bonus plants had been included, but, when you consider the size of the groups... any of them easily could have been divided into two, three or four plants! However, I figure if the experts consider these "a" plant, I'll plant them that way. Anyway, ALL clumps are now sending up fresh new shoots. I consider this company to be a real find, and will definitely order from them often. Thanks to Garden Watchdog for pointing them out.

I ordered and received 25 mixed plants in July. All the plants were HUGE, healthy and 5 bonus plants were thrown in. The plants were very fresh. I planted them in 90 degree heat and all but maybe two plants have sprung up very quickly. In fact two of them have put up scapes and are blooming this late.

I went ahead and ordered another 25 and received them during even hotter weather and I'm happy to report after a couple weeks all have new growth and a several are growing as if it were spring.

The value is there when you look at the size and health of the plants.

How about a superb rating instead of a positive!

I ordered two special daylilies for a purple bed I have in my yard. Not only did they arrive promptly, they were huge, 3-fan, with roots almost 6 inches in diameter. Very clean and healthy. Also, I received a bonus plant, and, someone was really thinking, they sent another purple one to me. I soaked them and planted them the next day. Two days later, I have new greenery showing up. These daylilies act like they were never moved, just given a little haircut! I had not been planning on a full daylily bed, but now, hmmm... :) Very impressed.

When I can purchase daylilies from a mail order company, have them delivered and plant them in 90+ degree temperatures and they jump out of the ground in a few days, I have found my source for daylilies with Oakes Daylilies. It speaks volumes for how Oakes grow and ship healthy plants. I too enjoy the large clumps and the Bonus plants. My problem is making beds and borders to plant all that I want to buy, as the prices are fantastic. I have paid comparable prices for plants of much lesser quality. I am anxious to see mine bloom, but have only been planted about 11/2 weeks, so I'll have to wait awhile. I think all daylily lovers would appreciate the quality and service Oakes Daylilies gives their customers.

I ordered from Oakes for the first time earlier this spring. I chose Oakes because of the great feedback here on Garden Watchdog, and I was absolutely delighted with my order. I ordered 10 different varieties of daylilies. The clumps were HUGE. In most cases, I had two good sized clumps of each daylily that I had ordered. (each clump being 2-4 fans, so that means Oakes sent me some HUGE daylilies!) They also threw in an extra: and it was not one of the $5 plants either (I would've been delighted with one of those, but this left me floored!). All I can say is WOW. I have given my extra Oakes catalogs to my friends and family who are also avid gardeners. I will definitely shop with Oakes again!
-- oh, and to my amazement, most of the daylilies that were just planted a couple months ago are currently in bloom or bud! I didn't expect anything until next year, but these daylilies are already performing!

I have ordered daylilies and gift certificates from Oakes and I have been extremely pleased with their daylilies and service. I can depend on them to send healthy, generous plants. This is important when you are thinking of sending someone special a gift. You can depend on it being right. They also sent my choice of bonus plant. I will order from them again.

Last fall I ordered daylilies from Oakes' end-of-season sale. I was pleased with the size of the fans I received- very big and healthy! Delivery was fast. All are growing nicely in my garden and look great.

Ordered a grab bag and got way more than I bargained for! Huge clumps of very healthy plants and more than I ordered. Was able to easily divide them into mass plantings.

I've ordered twice from Oakes now - the ones I planted last fall are up and looking great. Both times I received at least one extra plant. Great website, timely delivery.

I received a gift certificate from my daughter for Mother's Day so I called and ordered several of the Rosie Meyer's because they rebloom and are evergreen. They arrived Friday and are HUGE!!! The folks at Oakes included an extra one for me. My daughter orders from them all the time and her garden is beautiful. Daylilies are perfect if you want a carefree garden.

I was so impressed with the size of the plants I received in my first order that as soon as I could prepare more garden space I placed two more orders. The selection and value are much better than one can find in the local nurseries. The daylilies I planted last spring bloomed that first summer. The daylilies I planted last fall are full of buds ready to bloom. I can't wait to see all the different blooms! And the best part is the free daylilies that you get with each order.

Ordered three daylilies in February. Company had great communication, pleasantly answered my question when I had forgotten when I had requested shipping and included a lovely reblooming daylily as a bonus plant with my small order.

I'm pretty new to daylilies, but I am definitely impressed with this company.

I was shocked when I received my daylilies, they were HUGE!!! I'm not a big fan of daylilies but Oakes is really making me change my mind, I have seen a few more I'm gonna get.

I have been impressed with Oakes Daylilies for three years and was emboldened to order from Paradise Garden based on the Oakes reputation. I ordered hostas (which by phone order) and was reassured when the helpful order taker said that the Oakes people grow their own hostas. So glad I did...the hostas are healthy, beutiful, and LARGE. They also included a bonus hosta and even matched the free plant to the ones I ordered. Sooo pleased. Thank you Oakes.

I use online ordering because I like different varieties than what I can find at the local nursery. I have been ordering daylilies from Oakes now for the past three years. They have consistently sent me daylilies that are large, multi-fanned, and healthy. I was also happy with the "bonus" daylilies they sent me. All the daylilies bloomed the first season and have been blooming consistently since I planted them. I did not order any this season since I needed to divide due to their prolific growth. I have been very satisfied with the uniqueness, quality and prices of plants I have purchased from Oakes.

I received another great order from Oakes this year. The largest daylilies by mail order that I have received. Fast shipping and great customer service.

I ordered 1 clematis "Josephine" and was apprehensive about what I might receive. I was extremely pleased when I opened the box and saw the beautiful plant. It was large and healthy - more than I expected. Thank you. I would not hesitate to order from Paradise Garden again.

I recently purchased from this company and was very pleased and would recommend them to everybody. I ordered the Joan Senior from them and they are growing already! The gift day lily is huge and is a great addition to my garden. The packaging was great, and they sent my plants fast , unlike a few other online nuseries I have ordered from.

I have had some bad luck but took a chance with this company this year,and they sure changed my mind on ordering online. My order of 17 daylillies arrived in wonderful shape and they were all very large. Plus the company actually pays attention to what you like and provided me with two free plants that were in my color scheme and in wonderful condition. Wow! I can't believe the size of these plants! It took BOTH of my hands to go around one of these beautiful babies! I can't wait to see the blooms! Thank you so much for restoring my faith in mail-order gardening.

What a WOW experience. I ordered 3 frankly scarlet and 3 pandora's box and received 2 pandora's box free. I have ordered so many bareroot daylilies from other companies only to receive these little bitty plants, that rarely live and the ones that have still aren't big enough after two years to bloom. But those were a little inexpensive and you get what you pay for. This year I decided I am tired of ordering a lot of inexpensive plants that don't survive so this year I spent a little more money and I must say, when I opened the box from Oakes, all I could say was WOW, WOW, WOW... I was totally amazed at the size and quality of plants. I had to wait a few days before I could plant, planted them on 22 March 08 and they look great. I am so anxious to see them bloom. I will definately buy from Oakes again... Well worth the additional expense.

Just received my first order from Oakes Daylilies (found the company here on Dave's Garden) and am VERY impressed. The tubers are so large and healthy! And they sent a bonus daylily, which I wasn't even expecting! I'm sold. Will definitely order from them again.

Ordered many times in past few years. Excellent plants, large and healthy, every year (exception is hem. Flava -got 5 plants- none have bloomed for two years...perhaps this year!) .
My motivation for this rating is the EXCELLENT and friendly customer service. This year I changed my order twice (getting 5 Frans Hal: fabulous!) and both times got a courteous very friendly and helpful response.
Highly recommend.

I have purchased daylilies a number of times over the years from Oakes and the plants have been of excellent quality. The clumps are large and can easily be separated into multiple plants.

For the past several years I have purchased a bulk mixture of daylillies from Oakes. I wanted to replicate a daffodill and daylilly display I had seen in another catalog. Lets just say that these plants have far surpassed my expectations. The bare root plants are HUGE and bloom the same year they are planted. The next year they just get better, so I ordered more. This may be a symptom of compulsive behavior, but I'm okay with that. These guys are great and every other mail order company has a lot to measure up to.

OK, I'm usually not this bad about not getting stuff in the ground, but I have to tell this story. I ordered a bunch of daylilies from Oakes, and they sent me an INCREDIBLE bunch of HUGE roots. I put them in a large tub in the shade and filled it with water, because I knew I wouldn't get them in the ground that day. Unfortunately, the bed I was working on needed a little more tending than I thought, and it was almost a MONTH before they got into their new home. I want you to know, they grew and budded IN THAT TUB OF WATER. And today, more than 2 years later, they are absolutely beautiful clumps of daylilies at the end of my driveway. I've ordered several orders since, and have never been disappointed. A++ in my book!
