Martagons

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

This is my first year with martagons. I have 3 of 4 up and they've started to bud, but the tops are turned to the side now, same direction and toward the most sunlight. It's not because they're limp ~ they're very rigid.

What's up? Is this normal?

Most likely normal, especially if that side gets more sun. But if often happens even in my full sun situation. You should find that as they grow, the stem will straighten (but perhaps not completely). Often, as one part of the stem straightens, the newer younger part is bent over, and so it progresses, untill the entire stem hardens at a upright or near upright aspect.

It's common for martagons to look virused when young, with varied coloring of greens. Don't worry, by mid June it will clear up.

My martagons always look like that.

I've been gone for a couple days to the Iowa round up and the lilies are no longer pointing East ~ they've gone South. Thank you so much for your replies.

A couple of mine look that way. I thought maybe it was the cool, windy weather...but then maybe it is just a random event.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Cool and windy is right! Northern Iowa was like the frozen tundra compared to the weather at few hours later at home ~ 70° at 7 pm.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Saturday was a windy cold mess here. I covered all of these newly planted things with blankets. I figured if I was shivering, my plants would be too. So a round of blankets for all of us! No frost, but that weather wasn't good for anything.

That is a pretty normal occurrence for the 'marties' as lefty said.

Wow Mary, I don't think I have any that far along!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I can't believe they're doing so well, this being their first year and all. Two of the most robust are the Hartle-Gilman's.

I've been hovering, waiting for my first marty blooms. I swear they stayed like this for 3 days.....

Good job, Moby! I love the way they dangle!

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

My Claude Shride. It droops too, although we had the third driest May on record. And no rain in sight. I think they might be bowing a little lower than normal. Mine grows in pretty much full sun, too.

Claude Shride is one of the most vigorous martagons. Soon yours will look like my clump!

Those martagons are the ultimate in grace. They are stellar there Moby ;)

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Moby, your mart is stunning. They're my favorite lilies, and if I ever have a bigger garden and a fatter wallet I will definitely start collecting them. Right now all I've got are some Mrs. R.O. Backhouses and a couple of species marts that showed up one year and never again. Claude Shride is a beauty. And you've got so many blooms there for a first year plant. Well done!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Nice Moby. They look so graceful hanging there.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Thanks all. Aren't they lovely? Like a little chandelier of gems. :)

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

That ones a beauty - and a perfect description of it too (little chandelier of gems)!

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Lovely just lovely. :) Moby, I wouldn't expect anything less from you. :)

Leftwood, we need to see more of your gardens. :)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Absolutely! Lefty gives us wonderful single shots but I want to see the whole she-bang.

This one opened yesterday, I think it's Brotsing.

Fantastic picture!!!

marts definitely have an all over appeal from the foliage to the waxy hold up well flowers. Just love them, keep them coming....

What lovelies everyone!!!!!

I finally have a martagon hybrid open, I think it is Claude Shride, but it is raining outside and I'm fond of my camera

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Very impressive. Claude Shride is wonderful.

Nice! Looks like you have lots of buds there. You'll have to post another pic of the whole stem when it gets going.

This is my last marty to bloom. Haven't yet found any good pics to ID it.

Others in the martagon section:

Super Tsing - a L. martagon x L. tsingtauense

Thumbnail by Leftwood
Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Lilium miquelianum - a made up name to designate the naturally occurring L. distichum x L. tsingtauense (or so they think)

It still show a bit of kinky foliage. That will staighten out as the season progresses. (It's not virused.)

Lilium martagon 'Amelita' (Thanks Mainiac!)

After producing eight flowers and eight seed pods last year, it is still go to make 16 flowers this year!

Thumbnail by Leftwood
Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

And unexpectedly, my first seedlings will flower this year. They were all started in 2004, and the old fashion way: planted in spring, so they didn't emerge until spring of 2005.

Of course, it would be foolish to allow these plants to complete their bloom when so small. But the martagon var. album will bloom so I can see if that is what it actually is. And same with the L. tsingtauense (at right). More common in the trade is L. miquelianum, masquerading as L. tsingtauense. But the foliage still shows variegation, a good sign, as that also points to a tsingtauense identity.

I like the kinky foliage ~ it's a shame that it will lose it.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Yeah, I like that kinky foliage too! Gives it an interesting look. :)
