Any New 2009 Iris Catalogs Yet? Part 4

Cherryvale, KS

My friend received Cooleys yesterday!!!

Lebanon, OR

I have bloom, which is strange

MDB
Derby Boy
Crown of Snow
Alpine Vista

6 days before last year.

Raleigh, NC

don't know if it's me or what, but I can never find my way around hort.net easily, and if I find something once, I can never find it again

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

Well, I didn't say it was easy, but I find using the search engine works best. Going through the posts one by one, you should only go to the ones that have cameras by them -- but they the camera is often not present on some that have pictures -- why I don't know.
Once I tried going through the files and downloading pictures one by one to make my own private database, but that got old in a hurry.
It isn't easy to find all iris cultivars. That is why it is so important for us to keep adding to plant files.

Happy Jack, AZ(Zone 5a)

Oh, I finally got my Cooley's catalog today! I was a bit disappointed at the size of the catalog, but understand why they downsized. In the long run it makes sense, doesn't waste as many trees, and it is a lot easier for me to handle. And best of all, it takes up less space on my shelves. 8^)

Raleigh, NC

got Cooleys two days ago, and I'm trying let heck to make decisions here. with less $$ it's going to be tough to do

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

I am having the same problem, bonjon. The $$ is part of it, but so is the lack of space. I can really see how people end up buying a few acres on which to grow their iris -- right Dee?

Lebanon, OR

Yup, but the last time I expanded will be the last for sure...

Here is a new iris website (new just this spring). RockyTop Gardens. Grace upon Grace, and many other beauties can be seen and ordered from here. The catalog is available online in the PDF form. Phils thing (and I quote) "....is the uphill battle to expose new iris breeders to the republic." He has some pretty lovely irises.

Here is the link: http://rockytopgardens.com/index.htm

I apologize if someone else has listed it before this; but some years are a bit busier than others to try and keep up on 'everything". ^_^

Happy spring!

Phil's goal is a worthy one. I love Grace on Grace. With so many of the older hybridizers leaving us, we need new ones to take their places. I had heard of Rocky Top before, but I am not sure about here. I think I found it by googling. They have lovely stuff.

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Oh, oh , oh. I HAD to go look. I flipped over Royal Vestments. Increadable. Not very expensive either, at least to my way of thinking. As someone who is used to the prices of new daylily intros, looking at new iris intros is so much easier on the pocketbook.

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

New daylilies are incredibly expensive! I marvel that they can sell them. I love the stuff at Rocky Top -- too much of it!

South Hamilton, MA

We have ordered from Rocky Top for some years, even though we grow fewer TBs than most of the iris gardeners on DG.

Oro Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

I've ordered from RockyTop Gardens the past 2 -3 years myself, and they always send nice large rhizomes! Until this year they had no website, but finally a friend of his, named Debbie, convinced him it would be a good idea! He is very friendly and works to make you happy! if you never tried them - I'd encourage you to.
^_^

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

I plan to!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

Same here:) I'm guessing most of the hybridizers represented in the catalog aren't as widely known as the usual suspects? I know I'd seen some of their names but others I hadn't heard of. The photos are gorgeous! Made me wish all of the iris listed had photos:lol:

South Hamilton, MA

Phil does a good job of representing the small hybridizers, especially eastern ones. but some from the PNW who are not as well known. I really liked 'My Stitiches' a TB plicata done by Sterling Innerest who has done good work for years. He doesn't seem to carry it this year, but Superstition does.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

I'll have to look at that one:) I've got to look up photos for some of the ones I have on my list from Rocky Top...I jotted down the ones that grabbed me from the descriptions since I know my color preferences.

Raleigh, NC

hmmm, think I knew of or heard of most of these hybridizers at Rocky Top. which ones were unfamiliar?

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

Unfamiliar TO ME bonjon--I just started buying named varieties 3 or so years ago. I'm by no means the experts that most of the posters here are.

Raleigh, NC

ahhhh, well, you're still welcome to come this way during bloom season, long as you don't make comment abou the weed levels

my prime season same as yours most likely

Oro Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this one yet......................but Zebra Iris Gardens is up now.

I like the new introduction ORANGUTAN ORANGE which is a rich deep orange broken-color iris. It makes me want an orange-cream popsicle. ^_^

Oro Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

This is an online iris garden I haven't found until this year: Iris Howse and Gardens
http://www.irishowseandgardens.com/index.htm

Oro Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

Also Nola's Iris Garden has recently updated and listed (and taking orders for their 2009 new introductions for this year. (which just so happens to be my introductions.) Many of the other pages are not updated yet, but they hope to have that done soon too.

If any of you like rebloomers - I've introduced 2 of them. ^_^

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

And don't forget Iris Colorado, the nursery of hybridizer Lowell Baumunk. He sells only his own intros but they are lovely. Check out:

http://www.iriscolorado.com/

His intemediate bearded Midsummer Night's Dream won the Sass award and he has a lovely new into called Just a Kiss Away.

As far as I know he doesn't have a catalog.

Enjoy!

Oro Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

Betty,

You're right!................... he has some lovely introductions! I am smitten with 'Just a Kiss Away' too.

Another website, if no one has checked it out yet is SEAGATE. Taking a look at what is going on in the world of irises - across the ocean is fascinating. And this iris company WILL send orders to the US too.

Could you give us a link to your intros, please? Does Paul Black have a website for his?
Thanks,
Teresa

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

Here is the website for Mid-America which is Paul Black and Tom Johnson's Garden. I warn you, look and you will go broke!

I have to agree with bluegrassmom, Margie, I would love to see your iris on a web page. I know you have some at Nola's, but are all of them there?

Teresa and Betty,

I'll attempt to send the direct link to my introductions. All 3 years worth of Introductions are listed. 2 are rebloomers.

http://www.walking-p-bar.com/shopsite/New%20Introductions.html

If the above link does not take you directly there, just click on Nola's Iris Gardens
(on this post - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6528736,)
look for the red sidebar which reads 'New-Introductions' and click on it.

Was ARGYLE ACRES mentioned earlier? They have some nice historics, rebloomers, and prices are not too bad either.

I love that 2009 yellow intro from Iris Colorado called JUST A KISS AWAY. Yummy!

Schreiners iris catalog is available. I got mine.

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

I love Baumunk's work and I especially love Just a Kiss Away, but Elizabethan Age, Phantom Ship and Midsummer night's dream are also wonderful!

Raleigh, NC

at nationals, several smaller growers gave me cards. and it looks like I've lost most of them! they were all in one pocket, and DH washed some of my unpacked dirty clothes! ARGH! he never checks pockets..........I lose more cell phones that way....

South Hamilton, MA

Old poem I knew: Mice have gone up in a missle, And Monkeys & dogs in a rocket, and lively and clean from the washing machine, come the worms in the overall pocket.

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

I have information on some of the smaller growers. If there are some in particular that you are interested Dmail me and I will send you what I have.

Raleigh, NC

sure

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Does Scheiners send out a full catalog or do you pay for one?

Cherryvale, KS

I paid for my Schreiners. If you ordered last year they usually send 1 free. You can order it on-line. pic Can't Touch This

The catalogs are lovely to own but are very expensive to produce. I didn't get one this year, but it has probably been three years since I ordered from them. If I placed an order this year, I might get one next year -- if they are still using the same policy.
Frankly, I prefer the online catalog, but you can't beat the paper one for archival history of their iris which are sort of historic, by definition.
Welcome home, Nicky! Have you recovered from the convention?
