So pretty. I love that yellow!
So...are you saying I'm some sort of beggar? Well if it's a North Hybrid or a McRae, you'd likely be right. Wallaby, is most of your stuff from seed? You seem to have some very unique species. And wonderful taste I might add.
Lilies a year from seed in flower.
You gotta do what you gotta do, lol.
I would say now I have grown so many Lilies from seed last year then most of my stuff is from seed, lots of other stuff is too!
That last one wasn't of course, you might remember when I posted that last year from an ebay seller in Ireland who didn't know what it was, the bulb was huge with a cut off base so it looked like it had come from a rhizome but she had just hacked off the roots to get it out the ground!
L. centifolium (from seed) should be open very soon too.
Gotta love them species!
These are not from seed, but maybe Wallaby won't mind. These are L leichtlinii, any idea how long until they open? Lots of nice perennials blooming here--but I seem to be glued to these 3 species lilies I'm trying this year, anyone venture a guess as to how much longer?
And anyone tried them from seed, since it appears all 3 of the species I'm trying are going to bloom at different times?
They look fairly well on towards opening deb, the bottom ones will open first. I don't thik they will open in the next day or two, the buds usually start to show some colour for a while before opening.
L. centifolium has had coloured buds for days now, it takes at least a week to open from colouring and probably longer but that is here.
See the bud on the left, not a good pic but taken today, that stem has two buds which are both coloured up and puffed up. Another in the pot has two, one on the right behind has three. I took a pic on the 14th (as above) with the buds looking plump but not as big or coloured.
I see what you mean--now I'm out to race out there and look for color before it gets dark.
They bloom yellow so looks like they won't have to turn much--lol
edited to add--they are just as green as they can be

If it helps the anguish you can see what the buds look like when fully coloured on The Genus Lilium, there is a pic. They look quite yellow!
http://www.the-genus-lilium.com/leichtlinii.htm
I have L. lancifolium var. flaviflorum which is similar, the poor things are struggling under an overgrown Ceanothus but they keep returning. Maybe this autumn I should move some!
We have to remember Deb is in that Texas heat, but they still have a ways to go.
Wallaby, judging from the gerbera, those are truely pixie lilies! L. pumila size is quite variable, I think. I wouldn't mind getting some seed from those, if you have any extra this season. The ones I grew for a while were much larger, like 70cm.
And a very nice backdrop of hosta in that pic too. What's the cultivar?
And which alstro?
They are tiny Lefty, I wondered if they would be bigger next year, that is if they are around then as I think these can die if they flower well but leave seed. There is actually 5 in one pot and 4 in the other so I may be able to spare a bulb or two, only 4 plants in flower but a couple others made papery buds. I will have to make sure some are pollinated, they are outside now with plenty of bumblebees but I haven't seen any on them, they like the Aquilegias.
I just measured the biggest one, it's 4cm across, that of course to the curved edge. I hadn't tried smelling it until now, it smells like honey and it's night time here, that is cool. The Gerbera is 10cm diameter.
The Gerbera is one I grew about 9 years ago from seed, was supposed to be Californian Giants in bright colours but this was all I got apart from one other pale creamy yellow which was weak and died. It is tall and lives in the greenhouse over winter, has taken much hard (-9C and frozen solid in early years) and prolonged frost and lives. It never makes viable seed though!
The Hosta is Fire & Ice, it's increasing nicely in an old metal babies bath tub where I have the original Alstroemeria plant but it was dwindling so I took some off and keep it in the garage over winter, it's now got to a good size but they take some time. The original of course is getting pushed out by the hosta and a couple of self set aquilegias which are too nice to pull.
I got a few seeds from the Alstro last year, sown but not germinated yet, but I have one growing nicely which must have dropped into a calla pot which is still in the greenhouse. It had the advantage of being winter sown! I don't have a name for it, I got it locally with no name but it looks similar to A. pelegrina.
I have another gorgeous purple Alstro with a name if I can remember it or find the label, last year it didn't do well and is going downhill, but some is growing so I will have to remove it into a large pot, it's again outside in a large babies bath! That one grows it's tubers sideways near the surface so probably got a little frozen, the pelegrina look-alike goes deep.
Aside from that, my Nomocharis pardanthina had 6 lovely fat buds on it in the greenhouse, which has some panes missing and it seems something like a squirrel ate them! The other, N. finlayorum had 2 stems, one with only 2 flowers which were filling, they were dug out of the ground and broken off but the bulb seems to be there apart from a couple of stray scales. It probably wasn't so palatable!
Nomacharis pardanthina before the big nibble! Perhaps it was a squirrel that ate Lilium Dizzy too, I have them around and they must be getting short of food except the birds peanuts!

These are the L. regale and some sort of hybrids which you know of Lefty, as you sent them to me from someone else and it appears they came from Germany! There is two pots of L. regale. the taller ones, the lighter foliage in front is the hyrids, the bulbs looked similar to regale bulbs but smaller (there was also more of them in a pot). Regale have quite a few buds, I think there's 4 plants to a pot of those and one has 6 buds.
Some of the hybrids have one bud. There's two pots to the right which are trumpet lily mix from pard, thanks to you both, some of those have one bud.
They have all been outside since I repotted them early in the season, not sure when but it was possibly late February. These were all sown last year.
I completely understand if you'd rather not produce any L.pumilum seed this year. But seeing as how they are a short lived species, you will probably want to get seed next year to insure its perpetuity.
Wow! on the Pard seedlings! I think my largest ones will get half that size this year. That's what I get for planting late and far less than optimal care.
No problem, it is a good idea to try to get seeds from pumilum and not all have flowered so some should live anyway, not sure if papery flower buds count!
Finally I have got around to posting the latest openings! Two days ago, the third day of a little over 80F, (now cold again!) I had 3 different lilies open which I sowed last year from seed.
L. davidii (thanks pard!), I have another pot with buds but this one must have been the largest bulbs, which were not very big! They were in the neighbour's greenhouse, and he had a visitor with two huge dugs which had a romp in there and they laid these over but they have survived with one stem bent a little when the flowers got heavy.
I put them next to the L. regale and hybrids outside, using the hybrids as a prop even though they are short they are strong. Lots of orange buds belonging to about 4 plants of L. davidii.
The one I thought would open first is L. centifolium, it has been colouring up for such a long time but just kept getting longer and fatter! It opened partially on the same day as the other 2, later in the day opened fully.
I love this one, it has a deep yellow throat with green and is strongly musk scented, very nice too.
Wow! What a wealth of treasures you have wallaby!
Yes bonitin, tehe, lucky aren't I!!! There's lots more to come too!
Beautiful!! :)
A tribute to your horticultural prowess.
wallaby is AWESOME!
Puuurrrrrrr, thank you, but I am a simple pussy cat.
L. sargentias is looking good, 7 buds on 6 stems, they are quite tall for beginners with strong stems. Now I need some more warmth to bring them on, 14C (57F) tops with heavy cloud is no good!
