Mini coop for DC area swap, hellebores, pulmonarias, etc.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Happy, I'll ask my MIL about Erika and Ostridge Plume. My SIL might want Astilbes, too... I will email her.

For starters, I'll take
9 Fanal
9 Amethyst
7 White Gloria

If 'Amethyst' is out of stock, I'll definitely also want 6 Erika, please.

Deer don't like Astilbe, right?

When do Astilbe bloom? You'd think I'd remember -- but I don't. Doesn't matter to me... but my MIL will want to know. :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've got a trio of Astilbe that I got from Bluespiral... they just keep getting fuller and prettier every year! They look very pretty under my butterfly j. maple. :-)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

As I recall, they bloom late spring and summer. There is a range, of course; some are early season, some late. I don't know when the ones we are buying bloom. There is no reason to assume they will all bloom at once though.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I think the foliage of Astilbes is very nice. They apparently do need a lot of moisure, and like a lot of fertilizer.

Laurel, MD(Zone 7a)

happy, did you see this entry @Northwest Bulb ? Aruncus aethusifolius
#164100
Size: #1 BR
$1.25ea.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Happy! Not blooming all at once is better for my purposes... I want them as accents, not a big event.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy,

I would like to have some Astilbes as well. Will this mess up your numbers? I would like 4. Other than the bright pink one (Fanal--2 please), what other colors do you plan to get? What color is Amethist? I am not picky--just NO whites!

Let me know--and thanks! Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Fanal is not bright pink -- that's not a good photo. Check my links above... I think BB's photo is closest to the color I remember from the Philly garden show (deep beet-root red, more of a wine or cranberry color).

Amethyst looks pale lavender to me.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill

I LOVE the beet-red color! Thanks-checked out the other link you had.
I'll see what happy has available as i am coming into this a bit late....

Gita

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Critter, I have my Fanal in my journal as blooming on June 10 last year. My Deutschland
(white) bloomed May 28 .

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

I was just thinking about Sally yesterday. She's in Italy. Does anyone know when she gets back if she wants anything?

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Here is the list of Astilbes under consideration:

Fanal (red and short)
Amethyst (purple and short)
Erika (pink and tall)
White Gloria (white and tall)
Ostridge Plume (pink with distinctive droopy blooms, and tall)
All are bareroot, and 1.05 a plant.

Photos are on www.nwbulb.com

Wyldeflwr: You are right about the aruncus, but that isn't the one I want. The aethusifolius is very short. I need the height of the Aruncus Dioicus for a dependable back row.

Gita: At this point we have plenty of Astilbe.

I dmailed SallyG just in case she is checking emails.

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Happy, I'm glad you conked out and got some rest.

If Smokey Blue is available, I'm sure it would be fine with everyone to replace the EB Anderson with that one.

I'll be here until 1 pm, then I have to run across the mountain to pick up a door. Should be back in a couple of hours or so. If there's anything I can do to help in the meantime, let me know.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Greetings Happy!

Wonderful!
The numbers below work for me just fine. Please feel free to add of subtract as other folks become or lose interest. I read that Sally is still abroad, for example. I'm very fexible. I'm happy to take any leftovers or to share what I have coming, although I'd appreciate leaving the Hellebore Double Queens alone. I'll need those for a spot that I have in mind. Anything else is fair game for you to play with on the totals. Hopefully that gives everyone a little fexibility. My hubby gave me a garden budget for my birthday this month, so I'm good to go. I've spent a bunch of it on landscaping stones (I LOVE Craigs LIst!) but I've got flower money left.

Isn't he a sweetie!

Now I just have to find a day that I can take off work to plant!

No, I'm planning to order what is listed, but I have a lot of work I have to do today so it'll probably be on the late side.

Perfect timing, Lastelf!

I'll ask what needs to be done to keep the lily bulbs and bare root plants healthy.

I'll also ask about Smoky Blue Pulmonaria. If by chance it is availalbe (we don't think it is), is everyone ok with subbing it for EB Anderson? I think early on that was the consensus. This affects only wyldefwr (3) hart (5) larlienda (2) Happy (6) Critter (9).

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Happy, can you ask when you call what needs to be done to keep the lily bulbs okay until the swap if they're available? If they need to be planted, I have a plastic windowbox I could put them in.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes -- I edited the latest order post (the one immediately preceding your last email) with a reminder for when I place the order.

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Sorry, I was rushing. I see it now.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

No you didn't miss anything -- I edited it after your post!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Looks to me like 'Smokey Blue' is an improvement on 'E B Anderson', with heavier variegation (more distinctive spotting on the leaves) and really lovely blooms. Plus, it's 15 cents cheaper. Sounds fine to me, if they've got it!

Hart, if you have a fridge that doesn't have fresh fruit/veg (which can give off ethylene gas), that will keep lily bulbs dormant, even if they've begun sprouting slightly. Otherwise, the windowbox in a mostly shaded area is probably a good bet, just to heel them in.

Laurel, MD(Zone 7a)

Smoky Blue is fine with me if that's the way it goes.

Shenandoah Valley, VA

I don't have a refrigerator without fresh fruit or vegetables, but I have a cool, dark cellar that's always nice and cool, even on hot days. Plenty of room down there on some shelves.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Sounds perfect.

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Anything I can do to help you? Just holler if there is.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Hart: I'm dmailing you.

Plants are ordered and paid for. Once I know what shipping is, I'll let you know your total. No amethyst, stargazers or smokey blue.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Here is the updated list. I boldfaced what is open, but I'll deal with the few extras if no one takes them so no worries (I'll either keep them, or put them up for grabs on the co-op forum.)

NW Bulbs said the bulbs and bareroots should be kept cool, and Hart said she has the perfect cellar for that.

THE ORDER HAS BEEN PLACED. These will be available for pick-up at Bec's swap.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

From the notes in PF, it looks like Astilbe will tolerate more sun than I'd thought... I'll take 3 more 'Fanal', and if nobody wants the last 4 I'll find places for them also (but I'm willing to share, too).

Happy & Hart, thanks so much for doing this!!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

You got 'em.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Wonderful Work, Dear One!

I got a lovely letter back from Cindy at Northwest. The stargazers will be available in a couple of weeks, but they are a little more that they were: now 13.75 per 25.

Oh well. I'll keep looking. If anyone finds them cheap, would you let me know?

Blessings on your garden,
Elf,

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Elf, that's like 60 or 62 cents per bulb, with shipping... that's pretty good! Keep an eye on the co-ops. Neal (gemini_sage) got us some pretty good deals from Ednie this spring. No Stargazers, but Starfighters were included! :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Just a note------------

Mother's day is coming up. Many stores will have Potted Lilies, but not as many as at Easter. Some will discount them when they go out of bloom. NOT HD--Bell Nursery "owns" all the plants.....
Might get some bloomed out ones for 75% off.....

Also--and I will miss the "Market Day" at Rawlings on May 10th, because I have to work---and then the Herb Festival On May 24th (Bec's Swap). This is held in Leakin Park and sounds FABULOUS!!!!!

Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hey -- it starts at 10 am... you could swing by for an hour before heading over to Becky's and bring us all sorts of goodies, LOL!

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Check your local Walmart, Lastelf. Ours had all their bulbs on clearance last week. Lowes usually marks their bulbs way down too. Last fall I got $7 bags of tulip bulbs for $1 something. I'm talking about unpotted bulbs.

Costco can be a great source of bulbs too. Huge bags of bulbs for usually around $10-14. I mean huge. I got 75 named daffodils fall before last for $11, not on sale. They might be starting to mark theirs down now too. Be sure to check on their roses. Last time I was there, they had packs of two roses - good named varieties including some David Austens - for I think around $15. Those are usually marked down fairly early too.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Ollie's had some roses in a couple weeks ago -- bare root, nice size, some good names (pretty standard, but nice ones) for like $3 or $4.
