Weegy,
I found something that looks very much like your iris which is not Blackout. I wonder if it is Ransom by Ghio. I can't tell for sure, but they have a lot in common. See what you think.

Thanks for doing that paj! They are very similar indeed. I got my irises in 2003 and have found a few that were mismarked, this is definitely one of them.
Margie, Dee, is it safe to change the marker from Blackout to Ransom note?!!!? They look very similar to me.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

The pictures in the PF of Ransom Note all look so different. It's so hard to tell.

Weegy here is Ransom Note
To me not enough alike to change the stake. I would order the ones you think it might be and grow around this one to check to make sure.
One thing we all must consider, is that you can not tell from a picture. For example a friend of mine had me bring in pictures on a CD of 10 iris, put all 10 on 10 different monitors and let me tell you a big difference could be seen. Then we must consider the PH in the soil, fertilizer used. Many things can seem to change the color, even planting them from one coast to another.

Took that picture in either Mid America or Keith Keepels.
I do not grow but about 4 LA iris because so many of them grow tooooooo well here and sprawl all over.

I want more PCN iris and more JI and more Spuria, am I addicted. LOL

Sorry if I sounded like I was on a soap box was not...but the experiment on different monitors was a big eye opener for me.

No not at all taken as you being on a soap box. That's a good idea about ordering Ransom Note and planting it close to "not Blackout." And you are so right about the different growing environments. I ordered thousands of irises back in 03 to start my iris garden and we all know how having help sometimes when you're digging and dividing, there's bound to be errors. I did not order from the big iris growers, but out of 500+ cultivars and having maybe 10 errors, isn't too bad. I try to check as much as I can before posting photos, that they are correct, but if you or anyone sees any discrepancies, please let me know. We all know that having a business and having the names correct is a very big deal. So far, I have not had one customer tell me that I sent them the wrong iris. I have found that most of my customers don't really care about names, they just like the color, the ruffles, etc. I have tried to be as careful as I can but mistakes do happen.
My favorite black, Midnight Oil.

Not a problem Weegy, just having a break from doing all new stakes for the garden. So inside and it is getting colder outside, so have to hurry and get them out there....before the rains come.

Errors can happen. It is human error. We all try harder and harder never to have errors. I know the hardest one for most growers if they do not rotate their fields are the left over nubbins that grow and grow where the right one is as well.

I have rotating the fields now for 4 years, big time help.

I think you are right on about Midnight Oil, in my opinion it is the best TB black

Here is a BB or IB think BB that I have and it is a space age as well. Named it Black Bull

Beautiful.
Guilty of not rotating here!

Trust me it helps BIG TIME, if you dig your fields every year like I do.

I know all the bigger growers do rotate all the time.

Thank you about Black Bull

Yikes, every year?!?!!?

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

Wow! I would love to have PCI's. They are dramatically beautiful, but I fear they wouldn't make it here in New Mexico, so thanks for the pictures. That is how I will have to enjoy them. And I am glad to hear how you feel about Midnight Oil. I just ordered it this year. I love black and dark purple irises. I have to remind myself that, too many of them would get kind of dull --- or would it? Have to think about that. Love the spuria. I think I can grow those. I need to give them a try. And I am experimenting with Louisiana's both here and at my farm in Mississippi. I won't have to worry about their getting out of hand here, but Mississippi will probably be a different story. I need something that doesn't need too much attention in Mississippi because I am not there as much as I would like to be.
I am happy to see the Bronze Peacock and American Maid pictures. I have them both, but they are too new to bloom, so far.
I do love all of your favorites, folks. It is really helpful to see what really works for you. It helps me make decisions when ordering. I really like knowing what works -- and if you don't mind, what doesn't.
I lost my Bewilderbeast this year, but I am pretty sure that is an anomaly -- considering how many of you have showed it as a favorite over the past year or so that I have been a member.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Bewilderbeast to me looks like someone came along and brushstroked each and every fall . When I first saw it bloom in my garden, I was just in awe. There's so many of them that excite me when they bloom...not to keen on the solids but love the plicatas and bi colors.

Do you know the hybridizer of Cupid's Arrow?

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Off the subject of irises so I may brag!!!
I walked outside and look what I found blooming...this hibiscus I grew from seed. I am so proud of this puppy and just wanted to share. I think it's Santa Cruz Hibiscus, a tree hibiscus.

Thank you I should have guessed with his unusual colors.

You are very welcome.

Could your"not Blackout" be San Miguel? Thats what it reminded me of looking at it.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

I'll go and check right now, thank tigger. (the first time I saw you name, I had to do a double take!)

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Ooooh close, what I'm going to do later is bring my dh's laptop in here and compare them side by side like Dee suggested. Wish I would have thought of that, gotta get some V-8!
(hitting self upside the head!)

Oh Louise, ........you are so funny!! I have several V-8's sitting in my fridge - want to come on by? (they are low-sodium!)

This one is a favorite LA too. Did you know that if you just stick these plants in tubs/or buckets of water outdoors they will thrive, grow, and bloom? Of course you want to make sure they never go dry. :-)

Gorgeous. I think they'll be my next obsession.

Lebanon, OR

You mean I could put them in a kiddy pool with just water Margie. Never thought about that as at one time I had (note past tense) about 20 LA and got rid of all that are not around the pond.

D

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

I have tried keeping them in tubs of water. It really works -- until winter. Apparently they don't like being in ice. I didn't try that -- well not too much. Two were in ice for a couple of days, but i got them out as soon as I realized. I think the tubs of water with LAs have to go in a green house. But they do grow well if you put them in tubs with winter in the greenhouse. They guy who gave me 2 of mine got rid of them because they grew too agressively. I hope when I go back to the farm this spring it isn't solid LA iris!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The one clump I had from many years ago grew to over 1,000 and I gave most of them away. Yes, they do grow quite fast. I have bought others that haven't been that aggressive.
