2007-08 Tomato Seed Round Robin

Wilsonville, OR(Zone 8b)

I just planted my tomato seeds yesterday! Thank you all for the wonderful contributions. Can't wait to taste all my new varieties this year!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh, ep - what all did you sow? I personally can't stand it any longer and will be starting some this weekend, too!

Sherrills Ford, NC

I planted Zapotec last year and had a huge plant with the biggest blossom flowers I have ever seen on a tomato plant. And there were many flowers. But, not one tomato. I even tried blossom set spray and hand polinating but with no success. Since I only had one plant and no seeds I don't really know if this is typicl of the variety or if I had a sterile plant for some reason. I would love to know if others have experienced this.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

The RR arrived yesterday; I stayed up half the night going through them all. Whew!

Guess I better get started this week end; last year I didn't start until the end of March and they did ok but I would like them to be a little sturdier than that.

Ozark, MO(Zone 6a)

Wow, what a selection. I'm surprised to see that none of the packs I put in the Robin a month ago are still in there. A couple of the same varieties are there, but not the packs I sent. That's good - apparently I had some tomatoes that folks wanted.

But those who received the Robin before I did and those at the very end didn't get a chance at the ones I included. No problem - I've still got extra seeds from 2007 of those 10 tomatoes, so if you'd like some just send me a Dmail.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Wow, Melissa -- not only is that a lot of tomato seedlings, but you start early! I don't plant out until mid-May here, so I start tomatoes next week.

Sherrills Ford, NC

I would love to get in on this robin if anyone does one next year.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

We'll all be REAL nice to Melissa and maybe she'll do a repeat performance.

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

I prefer to plant out mid april if I can at all. Late april at the latest. Plus about 20 will go in wow's in late March. I prefer my plants to be on the large side when they go in the ground, they just do better for me that way. I've tried (last year) starting them later, and I just don't get the production I do if I start earlier.

Right now I'm waiting on hubby to decide if he wants to do my hoophouse like I want it, or if we're buying a greenhouse from Harbor Freight, otherwise I'd have already had seedlings transplanted into their peat pots. :) I have a hoophouse, but, it's not going to be big enough with the flowers I've started this year as well as cuttings I have coming in, so I'm not transplanting until my new one is up and functional.

The mailman was very late due to the storm but DID pick up the package. It's on it's way to you Melissa!

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

I just got back from San Antonio and 80 degree weather!!!. It was great to see flowers in bloom. And bare ground.
I am ready to garden, but we still have 3 feet of snow on the ground, and I have all these tomato seeds.....
I am offering up the same deal as everyone else who has posted the last few days. If you want to try some of the varieties I traded, Dmail me. Or I may have enough of others you may be looking for last minute, just ask.
I can split anything I traded since I don't usually plant more than 4 of a first-time trial tomato.
If I don't share I will feel like Smeagol...my precious, my precious.... LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Ditto!

I've got a couple of friends who will be hitting up my "stash" for seeds also, so between us we'll be able to trial more varieties than I can possibly fit into my little garden. :-)

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Same here; if there is anything I have . . . you want. Just let me know. You guys are Great!

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Just to clarify. :)

If anyone who participated in the Robin wanted any of those seeds------it wasn't an offer to DG at large. I did that over in the tomato forum, and that offer is closed now too..

I've gotten several dmails from folks who weren't in the robin requesting seeds--sorry folks.

What seeds I don't pass on, I'll use to start a fall robin perhaps, or I might just wait and plant those first next year, who knows.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Ah. Yes. Same here. I've only got a few extra packets of some of the ones I put in and may just have 3 seeds to spare of other varieties... but for folks in this robin I'll take a run through my stash if there's anything you're looking for. People I trade with regularly know they've got a standing offer to Dmail me, too. :-)

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

I've got so many varieties to plant, I'm scared! I may kill myself tending to them all but I'm up for the challenge!

Thanks again, everyone. This was so fun!

Louisville, KY

Melissa, Thank You for coordinating this Round Robin. Comments from all participants indicates that folks really had fun with it.
As for you, I know you are going to have a large number of varieties growing, but leave a few spots for some "special" tomatoes I will reserve for you at the CHOPTAG Plant Exchange.
I just mailed my friend and mentor, Merlyn Niedens, some new varieties he plans to grow this spring to introduce in the new 2009 catalogs. He introduced my "Granny Cantrell's" German Tomato in 2007, Hazelfield Farm Red and Atkinson this year 2008. He grew several other last season he liked very much and plans to include those with some new grow outs at the end of the season
I hope everyone has a great growing season and are blessed with lots of tomatoes!
Gary

Ozark, MO(Zone 6a)

Yeah, well - it's all you guys' fault.

We had a nice day yesterday, and I spent the afternoon taking out fence, pulling fence posts and moving railroad ties with the tractor. I'm enlarging my vegetable garden from 36' x 36' to 36' x 54'. The reason - all these great tomato varieties I've started indoors.

I sure enjoyed working outdoors again after such a long winter, and I got a lot done. The good weather didn't last, though - we're supposed to get snow again tonight.

I'm having a great time with this actually. So many interesting tomatoes, so little time. lol

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

This is truly funny . . . or NOT

Mailman picked up the package for sure out of my mailbox.

Yesterday he left me my envelope with my change in it.

There was a blue official sticker on it:

IMPORTANT CUSTOMER INFORMATION
We regret that your mail was not collected or is being returned to you due to heightened security requirements. All mail that bears postage stamps and weighs more than 13 ounces MUST be taken "by the customer" to a retail service associate at a Post Office.
July 2007

Then there was a handwritten note on my envelope from my mailman.
"Package was over 13 oz. I MAILED OUT FOR YOU ANYHOW- Over 13 ounces is important! Over 13 ounces must be taken by customer unless you use electronic postage"

Whew! What a sweetie. Guess we will continue to give him a Christmas gift every year.

Melissa,
It should be there soon.

(By the way, we are snowed in again this morning and it is too cold to go out and use the snowblower. Will this ever quit?)

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

260 varieties passed through our hands! May have been 261 as there was one listed as a cherry tomato with the same name as one of my big bicolor beefsteaks.

How very cool of you to do that, Arlene! Imagine - we've all "had our way" with that Robin, and she's still full to brimmin' with a bounty of good stuff!

'Twas a pleasure indeed!

Ozark, MO(Zone 6a)

Wow, that's a bunch of varieties. I sure got some good ones out of the Robin, thanks to those who put 'em in.

You can count it as one less, though, Arlene. Brandywine Red and Red Brandywine are the same 'mater.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Thanks for pointing that out; I had been keeping a list in Excel and had it alphabetize so I didn't catch that duplication. Anyone else let me know of any omissions, mispelling or mislabeling. I like statistics so it was fun to just see how many varieties went through. Now I'm sorry I didn't track how many "actual" packets went through. I know I didn't list the extras which that would have increased # of varieties as well.

So if anyone kept track of the extras Dmail me and I will update the list more accurately.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Hi Arlene,

I'm not sure if you were including mine or not because they were put in near the end. Maybe you are not counting those. For example, I remember I put in Yellow Perfection, Green Grape, Small Fry, Patio Princess & Florida Petite. I can't remember all the ones I put in. A bunch of them are in your list from a few days back after you had the robin, but they're not on your second list...

Maybe I'm confused about what is supposed to be on the list! I'm usually kinda confused to begin with!

Claire

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Thanks, Claire,

I hope to get this right; added those 5 and maybe Melissa can double check my list when she has time.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Found 2 more of yours from my other list and added:
Austin Red Pear and Gartenperle

So that puts us at 259 or possibly 260

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Thai Pink Egg was in there as well as in extras too.

I think I had transposed Pink and thai

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

I'll add it; no RR yet?

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

No, we have "blizzard" conditions.... the road isn't clean, so not sure if we'll get mail or not today. We have about 14 inches of snow on the ground... the most my kid have ever seen in their lives... they're 19, 17 and 10, and out playing in it like toddlers. :)

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

LOL! Very cool! We are having monsoons. Which, of course, have melted ALL the snow, so we have a real soupy mess out there. I live on a pretty steep hill, and I'm pretty sure I could take my kayak out there and run the rapids...

Hooray!!!

Has anybody else noticed how long this thread has become? It's slow to load, even with dial-up... maybe Melissa will start us a new thread for follow-up chat as we grow out our seeds...

:-)

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Hey, at least it's at the post office, now if they just bring it out today.

I'll start a new thread Jill. I'm inclined NOT to start it in this forum though.... any suggestions on which one to start it in?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

How about the tomato forum? :-)

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

I was thinking the same thing....
