Growout Results of Ukigumo x Youjiro

Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

Karen, the rounded cotyledons you describe and show here, http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3514699 , are usually an expression of the recessive retracted gene. Retracted is a major component in the large flowered JMGs, and causes the flower to often have greater than 5 structural rays (6-8) and the leaves to have the center lobe shorter and all the "points" more rounded than the normal leaf. Retracted combined with dragonfly results in the cicada leaf of the large flowered JMGs.

It will be interesting to see if those plants with rounded cotyledons show any of these characteristics.

This time I gave each one a ID tag to track them so when I show the picture then it will have the ID letter and number and descriptions will be added as time goes on. This should be fun and it will be interesting to see what happens.

Round 2 is beginning to bloom. Just like the first batch it appears the youjiro look likes are the first. Here are results so far...

Btw does anyone have blooms from the seeds I shared?

Thanks for the compliments. I`m going to be updating the album as more plants bloom. I also need to record the vine and bloom characteristics and along with the cotyledon information. I`m curious if the rounded cotyledon plants show any of the characteristics Atenkley has described.

Right now it is time to do some weeding, pruning and maintenance. I`ll be back!

I have been asked to update this thread. All this started in 2006 when I crossed a Ukigumo Large Flower with a youjiro. Then I gathered seeds from the F1 and planted the F2 which has been shown on this thread.

Lately,I have been experimenting with tagging and saving seeds and further growing. This year I have a update picture on some of the descendants of this first cross. What I learned is I can do this. Now for the future I will continue. :)

Those are all lovely Karen. Just a little partial to the bright blue with white bars

Karen, I was not born into the world of MG and you already had all the finest nuances that the species may give.I 'love this series!

Reminds you how many plants formed the bush?

Thanks to everyone. My favorite is the blue rayed one too! I admit I chose for more youjiro like characteristics in these. Dany, In the tall trellis of flowers I forgot how many plants were planted there! That got the attention of every passer by and people stopped to ask me what they were. I had probably 20 or more plants.

Karen - That's a great experiment! I too find the blue rayed bloom to be quite attractive. But in all honesty, they are ALL quite beautiful!!! Congrats on your hybrid experiments! Interesting results!
