What's everyone ordering for spring in the from of woodies?

Thank you treelover3, Good that Outback is a retail nursery because I don't have a retail tax number. I'm not in the green industry. I've contacted them and they indicate they reply within 24 hours so I'll order what I can from them.

victorgardener, I long ago stopped buying B & B, I learned smaller plants transplanted much better for me and had a considerably higher survival rate. The vast majority of plants I am ordering are either bare root or in small pots under a gallon in size with few exceptions. Even with placing substantial orders, this place is no botanical wonderland. There are days when I look around and feel as if I am bailing out the ocean with a bucket because it certainly does seem as if I barely remove one icky to see ten more take its place before I can plant back more appropriate material for me.

I got the CD from Classic Viburnums, but I've yet to stick it in. I'm a little scared of what my list of must haves will be!

Hmmm, afraid to stick the cd in? Your pocket book may never be the same again-

Hope it lines up to be viewed properly. Great prices, great plants, you gotta admit this is quite a comprehensive list-

She was overheard to say, under her breath, "You must be kidding?!?"
I'm guessing this is a complete list of what is available, more than anyone could plant in a season, right?

WOW. Wait 'till VV sees that! Is he going to give us a blow by blow evaluation for each cultivar?

No Equil's buying 2 of each, 1 for me and 1 for her.........;)

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

Oh, then Equil needs to buy 3 of each... (:o)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Prices are very reasonable. Is it retail??

Yes, that's a retail list. I have no idea what their wholesale list looks like or if they even have one.

NOOOOOOOOO- that is not my list of what I am ordering from them. I certainly am not ordering three let alone two of everything listed above. I've got enough to put in the ground with what I did order. That is Classic Viburnum's list of viburnums. They actually offered more plants for sale but we were only discussing viburnums at the time.

Greensboro, AL

OOOOOOOOO-So nice of you to post it for us who(M) did not get the catalog or CD. Something to search in my spare time to see what they all look like. Thanks, Eq.

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

Equil, I have all summer. Go ahead and order one of each and I'll come help you plant. Can't hardly pass up a deal like that, now can you?

I'm broke, too many plants for this year already. You're right though, it's a great deal as long as somebody else is buying.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I probably plan on spending 500 -600 a year on plants. But I actually spend a lot more because each one is such a blessing to watch grow and become an adult in my garden. Though when I buy anything else I always evaluate the cost based on how many 'anal glands' I have to express to pay for it. :) That is why my garden is almost the only thing I spend $ on.

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

I meant the deal of me being your house guest for the summer, ding dong!

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

Hi Equil,
I was just kidding about you ordering viburnums for me. I am going to order a couple of viburnums from them. I want 'Wavecrest' so bad I can taste it. I need to get a second cultivar so I can get fruit to set. Don't have much room, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do?
Thanks for posting the list.
Mike

I'd happily order for you (even though I don't know you) and send it your way but no point as you'd incur double shipping charges and they don't have a minimum plant order. I haven't gotten to Classic yet because I'm sort of hung up right now ordering Pleurothallids and such but I'm working my way back to them. I like that Wavecrest too.

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

So is there anything that you don't grow? You seem to be into orchids, carnivorous plants, trees, shrubs... and everything else... How do you have the time to take care of it all?

I, too, love the pleurothallids. I have a white-flowering form of Pleuorthallis grobyi that I purchased from Oak Hill Gardens, in IL. I wasn't aware that there even was a white-flowering form of the plant. I love the Masdevallias, too. Growing miniature orchids is very rewarding since you can grow lots of them in a relatively small amount of space and most do very well under a two-tube fluorescent fixture.

I need to send in my order to Classic Viburnums today. I'm off to scour the list...
Thanks again for posting the list.
Mike

Quite a bit I don't grow. I have my little hobby orchard outside with about 30 fruiting trees. Mostly into indigenous carnivorous plants, temperate species almost exclusively. Dionaea muscipula (Venus Fly Trap) is as "homegrown" as baseball and apple pie are. They grow no where else in the world. Same deal with Sarracenia in that its native range is mostly the southeastern US. I have about 500 Sarracenia species and cultivars. Temperate and tropical Orchids, Hoya, Nepenthes, Pinguicula, Drosera, Utricularia, and Cephalotus I play with. Roridula will be one I am importing from Africa real soon. I had steered clear of Roridula for a while because I had a senile older cat that kept rubbing up against it and it was freaking her when it stuck to her and upset her to the extent I was afraid she'd have a heart attack during the day while I'm gone. I made some people real happy when I gifted those plants. That has got to be the stickiest plant in the world. I know of no other plant that is as sticky as Roridula. Anyway, that cat passed away last year so now I can grow them again without worrying about my baby stumbling through the house to rid herself of the plants. I have a basement that has several metal halides but do also utilize fluorescents upstairs. New greenhouse this year too which provides expansion potential. I'll be coming to a close in the next few years on trees and shrubs. We should have the invasives removed from the upland portions of the property by then which means I can start focusing on indigenous wetland species and aquatics. I grossly underestimated how long it would take to clean this property up.

The vast majority of the plants I grow are natives so you sort of stick them in the ground and keep them watered the first year then call it a day. It's sink or swim out in the natural areas of my property as far as I am concerned because I don't have the time. I do generally buy plants in threes though to test out different areas on the property to see what they like best which helps tremendously in future plant selections. The greenhouse is going to have an automatic watering system with a misting system so that will cut down a tremendous amount of work. Orchids aren't at all as picky as what people think although Neps are sort of touchy depending on whether they're highlands or lowlands. I like the Hoya I have here because they are bombproof. Those things thrive on neglect. My kind of plant.

One thing for sure, I won't be stopping over in Montana if that is how Sofa treats his 'guests'. ;>}

Yes, Hoyas are wonderful plants. I donated most of my collection to the Botany Greenhouses at the U of M a year and a half ago. I had 33 cultivars/species at one time. Those little 6" cuttings you buy via mail order get pretty big, pretty fast. If it wasn't for Marathon, I would have dumped the Hoyas long ago due to their mealy bug-magnet status. Beautiful flowers, though. I still have a half dozen or so of the smaller flowered, smaller growing hoyas. The only exception is Hoya megalaster. This is a larger growing plant with exceptional flowers. I just restarted this plant a year ago so it has not yet reached blooming size. This plant is easy to bloom in normal home conditions.
Mike

I've used wettable Orthene with good success the few times I've received nasties as hitchhikers. I hate mealies.

My hoyas are grown as house plants. I only have 7 plus about 4-5 I just ordered and that's going to be it for me. I want them for specific areas inside my home. They do bloom nicely and they are none the worse for wear if you hang them somewhere away from grow areas and forget to water them.

Nice that you donated so many hoyas. I just donated a bunch of Neps because they got too big for the grow space I have available to me. That's the problem with Neps in a nutshell, they can get too big if they are happy plants.

Here's a pitcher I just photographed this morning that I am particularly fond of-

I hate mealies, too. One of the two toughest pests to get rid of. Scale is the other one.

Is that Nepenthes alata? That's a great photo! The pitcher shows up really well against the white background. You should put that photo in the plant files section. I have a soft spot for carnivorous plants, too, but I have had to cut back on what I am growing since I seem to have less and less time to devote to plant care.

I have an alata typical here as well as a complex alata hybrid but neither plant is pitchering right now or I'd take photos. After a while, the pitchers all do sort of start looking alike, don't they? That's Nepenthes x tiveyi. Not a common Nep in cultivation although I've found many northiana x veitchii hybrids floating around improperly labeled and being sold as x tiveyi. It's pitchering up a storm right now and I'm going to get it a few tasty tidbits from the petstore tomorrow. It's an intermediate. I won't know for another year or so if it's a male or female.
