Lily Tree? Huh?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

hmm, I could trade you for some lemon balm..... makes your whole weed basket smell great as you pull it up for the umpteenth time...might counteract some of the garlic smell.... ;)

now, there's an idea for a swap-everyone send some of the plants they can't get rid of. We could see how many states we could get fined for invasives in, lol!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Oh lemon balm-- been there done that! It seems to finally be gone (after about 5 years or so of pulling it out). I have to admit I did like the fragrance of it.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Susy, what , you didn't find the Lily Tree ad?? Maybe you should pull it out of the trash and look again. Lol!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

magnolia-- your'e up late (it's only 10:15 here)!!!!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Sure thing, Magnolialover. Anything you're interested in? Maybe some Tango lilies? According to Brecks they're "hardy and vigorous" "No need to dig up the bulbs in fall-the hardy plants can remain in the ground year-round..." ((arrgh!))

Seems kind of wrong to be scrutinizing this catalog that hard, though, if you know what I mean...

Pard, yes, that's the only thing I miss as I'm finally getting rid of it....how great it smells. It took me a while to realize what smelled so wrong about my weed piles, lol!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Nope, no lily tree for Susybell....Guess I'll just have to be satisfied with my Scheherazade and White Henryi for this year.....so sad..... ;)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I am up late....especially for me. I working extra hard for *lily bucks* right now. (yawn) but bedtime is getting closer....
I have sworn off Brecks and Dutch Garden for that matter. I'll stick with my favorite vendors, and if I can't get my beauties there, do I really need them after all?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

You know, I keep thinking I want to hybridize my own lily, at least two, and name them after my DD. Wouldn't that be sweet?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

That would be very sweet.......

Ugh, still working at 1:30 am your time? Go to bed! Being too tired doesn't get you anywhere in the long run except less efficient and burned out!

I used the Brecks's $25 new customer coupon one year for some tulips and they were Ok, not great. But never again now that I've found some really decent choices. Lily Garden is located right here, BuggyCrazy isn't too far, B&D is still reasonably nearby. How much luckier could I be?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Susy, I only wish I had a choice tonight. Any guess what profession I am in??
B&D Lilies have garden tours this week only, you lucky duck. Go, if not for you susy, then for me ;)
Still working.......

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Magnolialover, I wouldn't even begin to try and guess. I'm curious, though It seems you do get to be by a computer, so that eliminates a lot of things.
Hmmm. tours this week, huh?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Oh, you just gotta go there. One day I will go out during this time of year. I seem to get out there either earlier or later, but never quite lily season, though tulip season in the Skagit Valley is wonderful too.
Don't guess. It's quiet right now, I am lucky. A bad day here is the worst day anywhere, and I mean that.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hmmm. Well, I am thinking about heading north anyway. I'll check the weather and see if I can make it happen.

Ok, I won't guess what you do, but the way you say that gives me a few ideas. If I'm right, I probably wouldn't enjoy-or be able to do, your job. I hope you have a nice, quiet, easy evening!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Isn't Port Townsend south for you? That's where the fields are. Or maybe my internal compass is all screwed up ;)
If you go, can you take pictures for us? Pretty plase??
I can't believe I am up already. I must be nuts.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi there,
No, your internal compass is probably just fine. There are two cities named Vancouver. One of them is in Canada, and that's the one everyone thinks of because it's a wonderful city as well as the largest Canadian city on the west coast. It IS north of Port Townsend. The other one, where I live, is on the Columbia River across from Portland, OR.

Yes, if I go, I will take pictures!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

My internal compass is way off. I love that Columbia River area. Your nearing one of my favorite Oregon Cities, Yachats!
I hope you make it up there....

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Relatively speaking, yes, I guess I'm nearing Yachats....:) This area can be beautiful. I love driving SR14 down the Gorge. Today it's cloudy and currently 64'. bleah.

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Aaaahhh . . . . . the smell of garlic curing in the garage. Truly, I look forward to it every year. And Moby, you know that "nice rack" comment will be back to haunt you. LOL

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Moby's quips have a way of haunting us all...

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi Magnolialover,

Well, I'm not going to get to B&D after all. I've been sick the last couple of days (Summer bugs are the worst, I think!) I'm on the mend but just don't have it in me to do a 4hr drive to a lily farm today. I'll have to try for next year-don't let me forget!!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Ahhh, the timing of those summer bugs are not the greatest either ,I mean really, in the summer, is there really a good time? Hope you feel better, susybell.
If I know when it is next summer, so will the DG Lily Forum. You never know, maybe I can make it too. One of these days I will.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Thanks for the well-wishes! :) I was really hoping I'd be back up to speed today. I even set my alarm clock, but I'm just not all there yet. Still, I'm much better than Thursday! I spent all day in my favorite winter fleece sweats shivering and sleeping.

It would be neat if you could. It'd be more fun to tour a lily farm with other lily-lovers, I think. (Although also more expensive, no doubt!!)

Does anybody know how I can send this to my brother so that he can open and read it. Reason.......... He wants to buy the 'Lily Tree' promotion!!!!!!!

G

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

I think all you need to do is send him the URL for the page. I don't remember if I ever did it with DG, but I know I have with another subscriber forum, and a non-subscriber is still able to bring it up.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

If you're not subscribed, you can only see the first post. I don't know how else you could do it other than to copy and paste into an email.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Thank you so very much to the do not dare mention the named person who sent me this so that I could send on to my bro.

I really enjoyed Lynette's take on the "Lily Tree".

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

just came across this thread... we bought these at a local nursery two years ago.. long story short Randy doesn't get excited about much in the garden.. but these he actually goes out and measures how fast they grow... the down side is even though I told him there is no such thing as a lily tree.. he really wanted them... how can I say no when he puts up with me and all this stuff I plant every year

And why would you ever want to say no? Getting the other half interested is your best defense.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

My DH doesn't measure the lilies but he sure does watch and comment on all of them as they grow!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I am telling you he could really care less about what I am growing... but that lily got to him.. actually running out with a measuring tape... and writing how tall it is on the calender... he cracks me up

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

That's very funny ~ and sweet.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Very sweet indeed ;)

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Onewish, it's always good when you've gotten them interested in your hobbies or in my case, addictions. :) LOL

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes it is

The Lily Trees are resurfacing as a hot item here
http://66.70.38.191/cgi-bin/auction.cgi?seedsdpollen&1249833196
Are OT's fertile amongst themselves or is it strictly done by embryo culture?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Good grief...

I've been curious too ~ if OT's are from embryo rescue, what do you get when an OT sets seeds pods?

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I have tried to set seed on Boogie Woogie with many different pollens with no success. I wonder if it is a triploid. I can't speak for the pollen though. I don't recall using it on anything and I didn't keep records early on, like I do now!

Fertility varies with the OTs. Best success is with pollen of higher ploidy than the target pod parent. So Moby, not all OTs are from embryo rescue. I have plenty of seeds made from my OT crosses. I don't have room to grow them out so they go to other people to play with. Your OT pod could be just chaff or there could be a mix of good seeds in there.

The person on the LA is obviously new (no feedback) and delusional about the value of B. W. pollen. For Pete's sake, it's not hem pollen!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Oh my, not lily tree pollen. Delusional is a good word for that pard.

(Zone 7b)

I grow this cultivar, it's very nice, but in 3 years, it's still only about 3' tall...what am I doing wrong? lol.
