Nobody wants to know this-so don't read

There's no heat wave here either! I was out from 10 to 3 and mostly stuck in the shade for the job at hand. My knees are still cold and damp. It does make ordering more bulbs a lot less tempting.

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

LOL pirl....I can relate....the urge to order has abated significantly as the arthritis flares in response to digging/kneeling/planting in the cold...

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Yet there's that one spot in the sun............

Lindenhurst, NY

Oh, I love B&D lilys. As I took a look at my bulbs today that I was planting, I noticed how large their bulbs are -- not as large as Buggy's but much bigger than the Iily Garden.

I controlled myself and ordered NO MORE.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

On another forum someone in NJ said we're supposed to get to 68 next Thursday, not that I'm trying to encourage anyone to make any rash moves but it now becomes more tempting.

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

that one spot in the sun......ARGH! you did have to remind me! (actually I have lots of spots, which are not always that much fun to dig as they are on a significant slope and it is very rocky.....drainage are us)....and now you said the weather is supposed to be better next weekend! Fiend! lol

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Just ONE day! Imagine how much you could do in just a few sunny hours.

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

I keep trying to convince my sweetie that I only have a bit more to do....NOt very convincing when the 4 boxes are apparant in the refrig....I got asked to day point blank if there were more coming! With the dire reminder that winter is coming soon!

I'd love to be able to plant nice lilies out at my family's grave sites, but the deer would have them for after dinner snacks. ;) I do have some peony and a very thorny rose bush on family graves, but I need to put some reblooming iris out there, too. Eventually....

Diann

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

How about the many varieties of Daffodils, Diann? The deer do not like them but as we all know they will eat anything when they're hungry.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Diann, Daffodils are nice and the deer don't eat them here. We have peonies at the grave site as well as iris and daylilies. My family is full of gardeners, both present and past. Those plants do well, without any damage. I couldn't help but to try some lilies....we shall see if I gave someone a feast or not. Just had to try.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Yes, Daffy's would be good. I have a very confined space in which to plant, and so I try to stay between the headstones so that I don't cause the folks that mow the cemetery more work, and thus cause a ban on planting. I get out there each spring, weed and mulch for the year and then things look quite nice for Memorial Day. Some of the plantings are from WWI and before. The other two cemeteries where I have family buried won't allow plantings, such a shame.

The place where my grandparents are buried doesn't have anybody else that does what we do. My dad asked and they allowed it. It makes a resting place so much more beautiful. My grandparents, such avid gardeners, would have loved it. I did give them flowers when they were alive too :0) Each time I work out there I have such fond memories of them.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

I agree, planting flowers for your deceased loved ones makes their final resting place much more beautiful, and it brings you closer to them. That's why I do it. :) Besides, my Dad loved peony and so... :)

Well, for those of you lucky enough to be able to plant or who haven't purchased from this great grower, Buggy Crazy is having her sale. Ground here is finally frozen. No more bulbs until spring here....

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Ground is wanting to be frozen here too, no more bulbs for me till Spring.... Unless, I'd pot them up and put them on the sun porch.... nah, no more bulbs till spring.. :)

Makes me wish I lived in zone 8....It's soooooo cold here.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Hey, we're having a heatwave today, it's all of 22F here! :) Glad I've got a remote starter on the Santa Fe. :)

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

You are one lucky lady, Diann. Pre warmed seats and the works? And I think we are all of 8 degrees. Wind chill negative 4. Spring is a long way off, but still I can't wait....

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Oh yeah, well, the Santa Fe does have heated seats, but once you have a remote starter, you'll never be without one.. :)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I've got the Honda Civic LX with 40 plus miles to the gallon, which has come in handy with gas prices what they are. Why doesn't my Honda come with heated seats, or maybe they do now? Wait, don't tell me.... 224k on my car and still going strong ;0)

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Ticker is spoiled. Where is the pioneer spirit & frozen tush of earlier years?

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Yes, and I like being spoiled. :) Nanna nanna boo boo! :)-------- LOL

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

You two would make good sports casters ;0)

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

hey, we're almost close enough to throw spit wads.... :)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Now, that IS close! Haven't thrown a spit wad for quite some time, have you, at Ticker? Or was it a compost ball ?

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Nah, all Wanda has thrown at me is iris! But, I did teach my grand-niece how to shoot spit balls out of a straw.. :) Her mother was really pleased about that, too. :) LOL

Passing on the talents of our generation? Good job, Ticker!

Beachwood, OH

How 'bout blowing the straw paper across the table at restaurants. Once I taught my kids that I opened the door for all kinds of shenanigans. The funny part was how my husband beats them to it and gets them first.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

What about making worms out of the straw paper? Great fun to watch them wiggle and grow. :)

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Well, actually, we were at Zoey's in Marion (Iowa) and the straw paper is what we used for the spit balls, then we went to napkins, and then my grand-nieces mom took our straws away. Kill joy. :) LOL

Diann

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Obviously, there's something missing in my education. Straw paper worms? Details please.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

No worms in your life?? I suppose you never had Sea Monkeys either?! Poor thing.....

Hold the straw with the end steadily on the table, then slide the paper all the way down until it's scrunched up really tight like an accordian. It will be about 2 inches long. Pull it off of the straw and lay on the table. Now, take your straw and use it to pick up a drop of liquid from your drink. Lightly touch it to the worm and watch it squirm! If you use just the tiniest drop each time, you can get several 'wiggles' out of it. Makes a great mess. :)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I never knew the worm straw thing either UNTIL my sweet younger sister had the kids for a couple days and the next time we were at their favorite Noodle joint, they did the worm thing. Where on earth did she find this??? We grew up with the same parents, in the same town..... Ahhhhhh! College! Nobody at my college did that trick, or at least none that I knew.
Moby, those are excellent instructions, no doubt from an expert worm instructor ;0)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Oh yes....
You all must know that B & D Lilies have begun uploading their spring lilies. Lots of new orienpets that spark my interest, the colors are beautiful. Or maybe you didn't want to know........hehehehehe
Check it out, put a little color back into this December.

Worm Queen, here. Wanna play with all my bubble toys? How about my bucket of sidewalk chalk? (ignoring that comment about new lilies.....)

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Can't wait to try it out! Hey, I've got sidewalk chalk and I keep a bottle of bubbles at work for those days when I need special inspiration.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Ahh... excellent!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I used to have these antennas that fit over the head and when a connected tube was blown into, the antennas inflated. I say "used to have" because I wore them out at work...

I'll have to try that worm thing. Wow! You never know when you might learn something really important on these forums! I thought making worms out of straw paper meant putting the paper in the compost pile and the worms come and eat it and make more worms to eat more straw paper. Maybe I just spend too much time thinking about my compost pile...

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I like the bubbles you can get that have a longer life. They drop onto the ground and still look like a bubble for a while. Or how about a butterfly bubble wand? Now those are some giant bubbles, not exactly ones I'd use at work though, unless you're in a cubical and don't like your neighbor.hehehe
