Which cukes are you growing this summer?

Sunnyvale, CA(Zone 9b)

Thank you Rich. Yes, the leaves look much smaller on Tasty Jade, so they looked to me as if their growth was somehow stunted, but I'm sure you are right. This is just in comparison to Sweet Success which has bigger leaves and is much taller already. Boy, I wouldn't know what to do if my Sweet Success got as tall as yours in the photo. Actually, by the way they are growing so far, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they got that tall. I guess I can always extend the trellis on top with sticks or something once they get that tall, or just let them come down to sprawl.

Here is my tiny cukes growing on my Sweet Success. There are several tiny litle cukes on them (4 plants) and it looks like all of them are going to fruit to maturity. I am excited!

tmm99: You'll find that Sweet Success will set fruit from most every flower up to the point where the vine cannot support any more fruit and then stop. I've let them grow to 14" at times but to insure continuous fruiting you may want to pick some sooner. Don't know how big your vine is at this point but remember, they seem to grow forever, sort of Jack and the Cucumber Stalk.

Debbie - how tall are those Diva's?

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Just a reminder : most of the cukes you all are reporting have no photos in Plantfiles. That includes Sweet Success, Diva, Tasty Jade, Alibi, Sweeter Yet, Sugar Crunch, Chinese Yellow etc

Kanita--6 feet.

Farmer--I hear you, I'm waiting on the fruit from Diva; or, do you want me to post the plant too? I figure ya'll editors are getting tired of all my photos...lol

My alibi's are still in their cotyledon stage. When they get bigger, I'll post.

I hear you as well Farmer Dill. I just added 2 pics of my first Sugar Crunch of the season.

P.S. This after harvest. As you can see, I let it get too big, as the description says they are best 4-5 inches long.

Farmer,

I will sure post my Sweet Success in PlantFiles. My Tasty Jade plants are growing at the snail speed and not even one flower on them yet, but once I get some fruit, I will post it too.

Rich,

Yes, thank you for your post. I was wondering about the exact thing! So far, every flower has been turning into fruit, which was hardly the case with Diva and English Telegraph I grew last year, so I am very pleased with Sweet Success so far. Hopefully, it tastes as good as it's growing ;-) My vines are already pretty tall (about 3 feet) and it's only May. I will be out of the trellis shortly (have another foot and a half or so left). I guess I could let it come down and sprawl after that I guess.

Kearny, NJ(Zone 7a)

tmm99: I have grown Sweet Success for the past 4 or 5 years and they never have failed to outperform everything else I was growing. Then last year I tried Park's All-Season Burpless and was so impressed that I am growing them in 2 EB's this year and not growing the Sweet Success. You will be happy with the fruit...sweet, almost seedless to seedless and very crisp. Like I warned though, plan on where you will let them flop as if you only have 1½ ft. left on your trellis, flop they will!

My cukes are really lagging. :(

Sunnyvale, CA(Zone 9b)

OK, I posted my baby Sweet Success cukes in PlantFiles - My FIRST!

Thank you for your comment Rich. I am very glad that I decided to grow Sweet Success this year. I hope Tasty Jade is going to be as productive when they start setting fruit. Does Park's All-Season Burpless get as tall as Sweet Success?

SalemSunshine,

Don't feel bad. My Tasty Jade is less than a foot tall at this point with no buds. They seem to grow very slowly, but I am sort of glad since I know at least these plants won't go out of control on my modest size trellis like Sweet Success would. They look more compact with shorter vines. I am glad though that while I wait for Tasty Jade, I have Sweet Success to munch on.

I just couldn't resist it any longer and last night, I harvested a 6-inch baby Sweet Success and ate it! And it was very tasty - still very tender since very small, but the flavor was very very sweet and nice.

SalemSunshine,

What kind of cukes are you growing? (Just curious..)

We have been harvesting our Persian Cukes for a week now.People on the west coast should recognize the name since they are sold in Trader Joe's and in all the Persian or Iranian markets. They are so good!

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10a)

downscale_babe: Where did you get the seeds for those persian cucumbers? I have to add those to my collection. I do buy those at Trader Joes.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Funny, our Tader Joe's doesn't even sell seeds!

My babies are just popping up, but I can see they are eager to run. I hope they like the new a-frame trellis.

Salem, OR(Zone 8a)

I'm growing "sweeter yet", and "marketmore 97".

Oooh I miss Trader Joes. The closest one is an hour away. I used to do most of my shopping there. Did they get the habanero pistachios back? Those are fab.

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10a)

Sequee - Trader Joe's doesn't sell seeds, they sell the actuall persian cucumbers in a package.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

LOL! THAT makes alot more sense!

surfside beach, SC(Zone 8b)

Sorry I didn't answer sooner.WWW.ecoseeds.com is the nursery I got the seeds from.
I posted on this forum back in Jan.asking if someone knew who sold the seeds and I got an answer from DrDon.The seeds are a little more expensive than other places but I got 100% germination and the plants are producing like crazy.
Oh how I wish we had Trader Joe's here.

Yes, and their getting real large too...will post pic tomorrow. Cukes got off to a very slow start here this year--funny spring weather or something. Gotta grow them though, my daughter loves them.

You may have been wondering what cucumber vines in Houston in June look like--while they are in the sun...wilty.

Thumbnail by dmj1218
west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

But they 'perk right up' once the afternoon shade catches up with them. Shade is very under-rated here in Texas...would be imposible to grow bell peppers without afternoon shade.

Getting bigger--I have to watch cucumbers like a hawk--my teenager loves to slice them like chips and eat with ranch dressing....

dmj,

It doesn't get very hot here by the TX standards (75-80), but still the cuke leaves get wilty like yours and once the sun starts going down, they perk up!

Your plant looks great. It is already over 6 ft tall? What are you planning to do now? Let the vines flop over?

I extended the trellis (put some wire netting) this weekend so I think that should last me another couple of weeks but that will be it. I will have to get the vines flop over or add some kind of mechanism.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes--they are 7' now--they can just flop from here on out. lol
Cukes have a lot of leaf area so I guess its a defense mechanism. You can see them 'perky' in the above dark shots. I do succesive sowing with cukes--eventually the heat and humidity do get them down here.
Debbie

Salem, OR(Zone 8a)

Well, my cuke plants are about a foot tall, but I see tiny little cukes on them. Weirdness.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Mine are anoput 3-4" tall now, and growing like weeds. We finally had some sun yesterday, so I'm sure they were happy about that - Today's another Monsoon Wednesday. (Yes, I have Wednesday's off - LOL! At least I'm getting caught up on the housework!)

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10a)

I have marketmore and pointsetts growing in an earth box and the leaves and vines on them are huge and baby cukes are all over them! I have cukes coming out of my ears.

I have to figure out how I am going to build a trellis for my earth box cukes.

kanita

Sunnyvale, CA(Zone 9b)

Kanita,

I happen to have my cuke EB's next to the house so I lean a trellis on the house and those cukes climb on it. My trellis is very short so this weeknd, I added some metal wire netting (wires are covered in green plastic so no rust - 2 inch X 2 inch squares) to the house and they are climbing that now.

I wonder if you can get two sturdy poles and just attach some wire netting?

tmm

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10a)

Thanks TMM I will try that this weekend.
