I'm late posting this, got sidetracked with AndyPs flower site.
THEY're predicting a HIGH of 63* today. which means the winds will continue from the south for a while longer.

It's only 44* in my yard right now but the WIND is blowing 25-27mph from the South and with gusts to 36mph [howls like Califs Santa Anas for a minute] .... the valley air is full of blow sand.

Wow! just like that the wind stopped. And for now there's not a cloud in the sky. we must be in the center of the low, or near enuff as makes no difference.

SLCity and the ski areas and rte I-80 getting the precip. |;-(
Glad I'm not having to drive it today.

We may get lucky and get some precip [:-) from the back side tonite when the winds switch to from the North and the temps drop to the low 20s again.

Wind is from the south (ocean) today. That's something different. Note the double-digit humidity and dew point above freezing. It feels warmer than 58F. I took a walk wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Also, over here, it is partly cloudy, rather than the mostly cloudy reported for Van Nuys.

Expecting a deep freeze this week end.

Sidney. . .thanks for the cheery picture and the new thread. The cold finally came back last night. It's been cold, but clear all day and to remain so the next few days until rain is forecast for the weekend. The following is really not that cold, but since we've had a week of 70 degree weather, it's an extreme change, especially since the fruit trees started to bloom in earnest.

Somebody get that fence built, here comes that Arctic air again.
The wind DID switch - out of the north since late afternoon. Took down a fair sized limb, which fortunately missed the house and crashed in the front yard. Cottonwoods are prone to losing pieces.

Thought y'all might relate:

ohmiglory.. you're in the `minus 45 area aren't you?

That was the other thing I left behind in the Adirondacks. The repeated attack, sometime in the last two weeks of February, of the 40F belows.
We'd have as much as two weeks when 0*F looked good. The biggest danger was having the pipe from the fuel [oil] tank and the house furnace freeze up on ya.

They've only predicted low 20s for us for tomorrow. ;-)

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

THAT seem to be awfully cold, brrrrrrrr stay warm.

We are getting wind out of the south today and it is going to get up to 80°. That will flip around by Friday night and we will be getting the wind (and rain) from the north all weekend, but nothing like the wind chills and temperatures all of you are getting! Brrrrrr!!!!!!

Overcast 67°F (19°C)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

We've cooled down a bit...............whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw I don't wanna go to work. I can adjust (acclimatize) to slower drops but I hate 80 degree ones (that happen relatively quickly ie. within a week).

I had a feeling y'all would feel much warmer now. ;) We are supposed to climb up to -6 °C by Saturday.

The -45 °C is -49°F. :'(

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Lilypon,
-49°F.?!!!!!! Do you really go out in temps like that? Do the school children have to wait for buses, or do they close for "cold days"? When the wind blows, the wind chill factor must be awesome!

I see these temps posted, but I never thought that people actually went outside in them. Of course we don't have the proper clothes here. The morning it was 31°, the children going down my street to catch the bus looked like they had on every piece of clothing they owned. They could hardly walk! LOL

Sidney

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Pati, when I lived in those temps - I thought it was silly but folks insisted on acting like it was a normal day. my ex used to say, "Car better start when it's that cold, that's when I need it." LOL

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Everything continues as if it's a normal day. If children don't show up the teachers start phoning........they'll remind the parents that we live in what can be a very cold region and the children should have the clothes for those conditions (& if they don't go get them). The school will also provide clothes that are donated for those in need. Going out for recess is usually enforced (with pitchfork if necessary....going by my memories of those dark cold days;) but on the rare occassion they are allowed to stay inside.

On our race to the car this am we ran into our new neighbor (a pilot instructor at CFB Moose Jaw). They had a run to the hospital, last night, in the full brunt of the chill and he is now a first time proud popa of a sweet little baby girl. Ü

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Brrrr Lilypon *shudder & shiver*

Our weather so far today has been interesting to say the least, lol. We have had snow, thundersnow, hail, freezing rain, near blizzard and now an ice storm.

Statement as of 11:28 AM CST on February 16, 2006

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 PM CST this afternoon.

One to 3 inches of new snow is expected to fall across the region through early evening... with total snow accumulations ranging from 4 to 12 inches. Northwest winds will increase to 15 to 20 mph... with higher gusts... causing areas of blowing and drifting snow.
Blustery northwest winds may cause near blizzard conditions could over portions of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois through this evening.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow... sleet... and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

Oh joy.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Today is even nicer than yesterday.
Low 30 F, High 58F and rising, light south breeze and almost clear blue sky.
The snow is going fast, lots of bare patches already.
There is an end is sight however. High wind warning for tomorrow with a sharp cold front. The Big Chill is coming back for the weekend. Some of Lilypon's cold is headed our way.

Beautiful sunny day here in Pa. 62 degrees, my DH took a ride on his tri-cycle. Says he had to keep the batteries charged.

Winter high wind warnings are posted for the northern parts of Pa. - Headed your way Andy. Looks like a cold weekend coming up.

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

Sidney

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Sidney - with only miminal heating required - may I suggest (believe it or not) - a wood stove?

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

firewood might be hard to come by in Jax? just a guess.
and tho it's romantic to have a wood fire, and nothing is as nice to get warm next to, it IS a messy affair to get the ashes out of the house.

Can you tell I've had a love/hate relationship with more than one kind of wood stove? LOL ~Blooms

That said, those electric heaters are the most expensive way to get warm. I just went and looked, my heat bill for Jan [natural gas] was$95... for Dec, $120.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Dyson, that's a good idea. I have years ago removed a window pane and run the exhaust flue out there. Hummm wood stove going on my 'watch for' list.
I am calling in the AM to see if this side of town is piped for natural gas too.
I'd use it for hot water, heat and cooking.
I've got to get a new stove. Been doing homework on buying one.

Sidney, mine is also hot water and cooking as well as heat.
