Confessions Part III: What lilies have you planted for 2006?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Amen to that, Gem! BC's bulbs are freakishly huge.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

I have ordered twice from Wooden Shoe and my experience has been excellent = I think they are a safe bet.

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Polly, I can't argue with the impact 25 Asiatic Black Outs will make, it will be beautiful.

Neal, I'd be interested in sharing costs if there are others also interested.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Ok, that's 2 so far, so let's see how many are interested.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I would consider going in for min. 3 and up to 6, dependin on who all wants to participate. that is a pretty good price.

somewhere, PA

Er um... yes... me too. doh... there goes that incredible will power (I wish I had.)
OK - I'm in for 3 to 6, same as Voss.

Tam

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

I am fairly new to these lilies, but I would like to buy a few.
Teresa

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

OK, we will need some sort of selection criteria. I suggest we go for bulbs that are not readily available elsewhere. I went throught the WS site and made a list of these. At least, these are ones I'm not too familar with. Please feel free to add or delete.

And then we should agree on color and bloom time to narrow it down further. I would be willing to defer to anyone who has a particular need as to color or bloom time because I already have a lot of lilies that cover the entire season in all sorts of colors and, of course, they all look pretty good to me.

Or maybe to make things easy, we just go alphabetically with one that no one has. Any other suggestions? I hope this works out. It would be nice to take advantage of these prices more than once.

Lilies listed under Novelty and OTs - All are available elsewhere.

Asiatics:

Black Bird
Brigette
Compass Superior
Golden Flame
Traveller
Va di Sol
Toronto
Brunello
Bonfico
Cyber Space
Springfield
Tresor
Spacer

LAs:
Bizet
Jet Stream
Mount Grace
Menorca
Sefanja
Music
Suncrest

With the Orientals, they list was extensive of ones I hadn't heard of before. So maybe best to list the ones that I think are more common:

Casa Blanca
Roldofa
Le Reve
Siberia
Acapulco
Arena
Dizzy
Startgazer
Starfighter
Garden Party

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for compiling the list beaker. As it happens, I don't have any of the Asiatics or LAs listed. I do have "need" for coral, apricot, and salmon colors (Jet Stream looks like a nice one!). 2 of the Orientals (I wanted!) are listed as out of stock; Dizzy and Arena. The early season is when I'm needing color most, so I'd be happy to limit it to just Asiatics and LAs (not that I'd say no to more Orientals, lol).

If one more person is interested, we could do 5 varieties and each get 5 bulbs of each. And for a price that so easy to rationalize, lol.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

tell me about buggy crazy. Does she have a store here?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

woodspirit, she has an on line store and is listed in the Watchdog (under Buggycrazy) with a hyperlink to her site.

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Neal - Vossner is suggesting that we check and make sure we aren't breaking any DG rules. I just did this with a few other people to obtain some rare seeds. I think the issue with the coops was that alot of people were buying from wholesalers. This isn't a wholesaler, so I don't know what the issue would be. We can also move this to Dmail.

I'm fine with just Asiatics or LAs and Jet Stream is one I don't have. I'm trying to remember where I've seen Dizzy and Arena. It may have been at the NSLS Fall Bulb Sale. If you don't pick up elsewhere this year, remind me to look for you. NSLS does send out a list of bulbs they "expect" to be sold. Not guarenteed in case there are grower problems, but I would be happy to try to get these for you if they are available.

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

For those of you having problems with orientals, try modifying the soil to make it more acid, and very free draining. I add extra peat. Even when we had real winters here in zone 4a, and in a foot high raised bed with little snow(it blows away), I have had no problems with hardiness.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

beaker, you read my mind. I'll dmail you about details. Was thinking about not wanting to bend rules, and had this idea. We each get a different variety, and trade till we have all, or something along those lines.

and thank for the offer to keep an eye out at the NSLS bulb sale. I've seen both of those offered lots of places, but have either been too cheap, or wanted something else worse, to get them. In my lily gluttony I know it'll happen, lol. What kinds of prices do you see at the fall bulb sale?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I'm in! I'm in! whatever you do. My only other input would be that the items be ones recommended for growing by everybody involved. That will narrow the choices if people from all over the place are involved.

Also, it won't hurt my feelings none (how's that for articulate English) if I have to exclude myself because I'm in too warm a zone, which may narrow selections too much.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

I was recently involved in a bulk MightyPlant fertilizer purchase. One member made the bulk purchase after receiving payment from all the participants. When she received the items she divided them up and shipped them to the individual participants. The number of participants was kept low (under 10, I think). All communication after initially 'joining' on the DG thread was handled through private email.

The advantages were this: One person was responsible for making the purchase. There was only one shipping fee from the supplier. Each participant paid the same rate for the same amount of items plus shipping to their address. The person buying received full payment before the purchase was ever made so the buyer did not get stiffed. After people had joined the rest of the process was handled privately so it was not part of the DG site.

I think it might get confusing if each person orders different bulbs and then divides up their order to send to each participant. There will shipping charges from the supplier to each participant instead of just one shipping charge from the supplier to one central participant. Also each participant will be paying shipping charges for each package sent out to each participant. In addition, the costs of the lilies varies by cultivar or type so we will have to figure out who owes who what since it won't be an even across-the-board exchange.

As you can see, it can start getting complicated. That is why I was always so in awe of the people who were willing to host co-ops that sometimes included 40 or 50 people or even more. It was a massive undertaking and I was happy to participate but I knew I would never be capable of running one myself. I am not organized or patient enough. I am good at writing checks that don't bounce and that was always the extent of my contribution. LOL

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

I only have a few minutes here tonight. Have to get up at 4:30 tomorrow, so cannot stay up late as I like to do. In fact, it will be a miracle if I'm able to log on much before Thursday.

Neal, the prices vary between types of bulbs. I just checked my stuff from 2 years ago and Dizzy was 5.00. Last year it looks like most the orientals and LAs were about 5.00. Red Dutch was 8.00 and most asiatics were 4.00. Some bulbs are way up there, especially the rarer martagons and those that are in very high demand. I do get a 10% discount because I'm a member. Generally, they are cheaper than the prices you would get from the best sellers like The Lily Nook, B&D, etc. I set my limit at 100.00 and last fall I think I spent only about 60.00.

Voss, Tammy and Blue, are you OK with just going for an asiatic? For sure we wouldn't want to get anything that would not be good for everyone's growing zone. Asiatics and LAs should be good for all of us.

Leftwood, what do you do to increase the acidity in soil? Can it be applied to specific plants? I do use a lot of peat. I'm always adding peat. Is there a problem with making the soil more acidic if you're also growing other types of lilies in the same general area. Both of my larger beds have a mixture of all the various types.

Corte Madera, CA

a-ha! covert operation in the works. lol. i sooooo miss you all.

=))))

(meanwhile....i printed out TLG order form).

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Ok, all in, dmail me! Unless someone else would like to do it, I'll be happy to recieve the payments and send out the order :)

I've got Tammy, bluegrass, vossner, beaker, and moi!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

has anyone tried Nippon? It looks a bit like Muscadet but with a bright pink edging.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

woodspirit, I've loved the pic of Nippon in Dutch Garden's catalog (the only place I've seen it offered), but have had such problems with their stuff being misrepresented in the catalog I quit ordering from them. Where did you see it offered?

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I just saw Dizzy in packages at Walmart yesterday.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

OK Neal, sending you dmail.

Corte Madera, CA

dizzy and nippon are both offered at costco!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I'm embarressed to admit I saw them in the Dutch Gardens catalog only. I don't have a Costco nearby. Should I or shouldn't I, lol.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I've seen Nippon offer at a couple of sites, American Meadows for one ~

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Well they aren't planted yet but here is what I netted at the Portland Yard, Garden and Patio Show. From the Lily Pad booth OT Red Dutch and trumpet Midnight strain. There was supposed to be 1 Midnight bulb in the pack but when I opened it to do a little scaling there were 2 bulbs. Well I won't cry too much over that! Then at the B and D lily booth I picked up OTs Indian Summer and Sweetheart and a bag of 3 Sumatra oriental lilies. Now I just have to figure out where to fit these in when it dries out a bit!

Corte Madera, CA

a very warm welcome again! glad you decided to join us here. no more lurking! =)))

of course we love to hear what you got, what you're getting, and of course - - - what's blooming. (actually, the FANatics that we are, little sprouts of green EXCITE us already....)

i'm going back to costco, and see if the lilies are still good. been there for a while now. probably grown inside the bags already.....we'll see. i just know i didn't plant ENOUGH.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Does Target sell plants and bulbs? How good/bad is their stuff?

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

beaker, out of all the ones you listed from Wooden Shoe, the only one I had purchased was Suncrest, and that was a beauty!

leftwood, thanks for the advice I will try replanting some Orientals with peat. We have very sandy soil, and that could very well help. I don't think our zone is the problem, as we have such snow coverage. So it must be something else, and I'm thinking our soil might be too light. Thanks!

pardilinum, Midnight strain is a beauty, please be sure to share pictures. I purchased Red Dutch last year, and liked it so much I ordered more this year.

Polly

Corte Madera, CA

IF I SEE MORE LILIES AT COSTCO THIS WEEKEND: I'LL BUY MORE!

=)))

I don't think I planted enough. And Kenton mentioned Brent & Becky's....I'm browsing at the moment.

I just know I need to plant more lilies BECAUSE I ordered six (6) DA roses from Chamblee's!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Annapet, is it payday?! A fiend has been unleashed, lol. You're going to be posting glorious pics like kell before you know it! And I can't wait to see them. I'm completely consumed in lily madness still. Now I've got 5 more varieties of LAs and an Asiatic on the way, and you're getting one of each of those :).What roses did you order?

Corte Madera, CA

neal, i've been sooooo good. been getting paid WEEKLY. imagine that. and the chamblee's purchase was my FIRST SPLURGE. well, half a dozen roses is NOT even on the splurge category but you know what i mean.

sharifa asma
brother cadfael
kathryn morley
l.d. braithwaite
eglantyne
tamora

wow, on your treats! thanks for thinking of me. i can't wait to get them.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Beautiful assortment of roses! Can't wait to see pics. My Austins from Chamblees should do their thing this year, as well as the old garden roses, and I'm so excited. Envisioning voluminous wads of lilies, roses, and hydrangeas everywhere!

Corte Madera, CA

can't wait to see yours, too. especially your tiered project. thinking of getting some wine barrel planters when the weather gets better.

i'm so lucky with the long growing season here.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

How did we jump to roses, lol? Some of these lilies I have never heard of. I am mostly interested in the Orientals and the Orienpets. Is that what OT means? Oriental-trumpet?

Corte Madera, CA

=)) betty, it's a trend, lol. pairing lilies with roses and brugs.

yes, i think that's what orientpet means.

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Woodspirit - You should try to get hold of a good lily catalog. The Lily Nook has a great one and it explains about the different types of lilies. New lilies are always being created and old ones come back into fashion.

You need to pay attention to the Watchdog when considering purchasing bulbs and plants. My general feeling about Dutch Gardens is that the bulbs tend to be small and you might be a little disappointed the first year. But if you are willing to wait, the bulbs will grow and multiply. My personal preference for good bulbs is the Lily Pad, B&D, and The Lily Nook (LN - only for something I can't find in the USA due to shipping and certificate costs) .

Myrtle Beach, SC

Good morning all !
What's B & D ? Please post a web addy, pretty please.
It was so beautiful here yesterday. I got to spend about 6 hours getting dirty and ohhhh my aching back this morning ! It was worth every minute to me, even the pain, lol.
