Would that be the yearly meeting?

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

yup;
Has any one but me thinks my house and yard look like MA &PA KETTLES, place sans 12 kids. Even got 2 wooden rockers on porch .When flowers are blooming I don't notice its a dump ,but its my dump and in 5 more years it will be paid for .Life is so funny or not ?

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

Tazzy, from what I have seen, I would not say your place looks like Ma and Pa Kettles... and sitting on a rocker outside is relaxing... besides if you like it... then it is GOOD...

I dont know why?

LOL Tazzy.... you just toooo cute...

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi everybody. Starr, you still up? We had a little roundup today in Texas. Someone there brought some huge garbage bags full of horse poop to share. Of course, I grabbed my gloves and a plastic bag thinking I would load up. Then she opened the bag. OMG! She must have scooped it warm right before she left the house!! I was ready to take it until Sweezel told me I had to let it dry for about nine months! What I am going to do with it for nine months?? I grew up with horses but we never thought about saving the poop (unless my mom did for her vegetable garden and I just didn't know about it). My dad still lives on a small ranch and has horses but I can always let him dry the poop before I take it. My gosh, that was the worse smell after being closed up in that bag!! Makes me appreciate the huge trailer load Magpye loaded up (her poop thread)!

Oops! I started reading this thread because of Tazzy's greenhouse and then got wrapped up in the poop! Tazzy, I'm so happy for you! Wish I had one. My DH also says that we don't have the room. I can always MAKE room.

hi Terrie! Yup... I am usually up til 2 or 3 am... lol... I don't know why they said to let it age for nine months... I don't... it breaks down a lot faster than that... I usually have it mixed with shavings and pile it up and when I am ready for it...it is done cookin... and there is ALWAYS a place for a greenhouse...:)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

well dang, i'm glad i finally stopped by and i'm reading up on the latest happenings of all my lily addicted friends.
congratulations on the new greenhouse tazzy. i sure couldn't afford to heat a plastic covered greenhouse here in massachusetts. yowza!!!!

i have the space for a greenhouse, but i don't think i have the energy for one. as in human energy. ;-)

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

LOL, debi_z, glad you stopped by... come more often and bring franklin with ya! ...:)

Tazzy, did y'all get all this rain we had the past few days?

I figured y'all got it first and then sent it my way... (thanks ALOT) Were you able to make any progress on your greenhouse?

I am just a bit worried that with all this rain, the bulbs I planted are going to drown... can that happen?

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Still raining here today in KC. They can rot, Starr....that's why you have to plant lily bulbs in well draining soil. #1 rule of growing lilies, followed by "heads in the sun & feet in the shade" (like clematis).

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

I knew about the well drained soil, but we are getting so much rain that the creeks are overspilling their beds and there is no way this is draining off fast... should I go pull up all the bulbs that I planted this week and wait til it dries up a bit to replant them? I got some special bulbs this year that I don't want to lose. Not to mention the Monte Negroe's, the siberian iris etc...

not to be obtuse, but heads in the sun, feet in the shade, does that mean plant deep?

Thanks for your help,

Starr

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Hi Starr...:-) Heads in the Sun, feet in the shade" means usually that there is something planted at the 'foot' of the plant (I think in terms of Clematis) to keep the soil cool around the roots...but the plant itself needs full sun. I planted 35 lilies in one bed a couple of weeks ago and I'm planning on putting marigolds around the edges to cover their toes. ;-)

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Julie! Haven't seen you around lately. Guess we've been on different threads for a change. :-)

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

AH, I see! Thanks for enlightening me, julie! (Making notes to self... for next spring)

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Mulching heavily can also accomplish the feet in the shade for lily bulbs although I always put them in the backs of beds against walls, fences etc or at the center of an island bed as they are my height plants along with shrubs. I put a great deal of my fall purchases in a new bed along a fence that is full of daylily and iris and assorted spring bulbs in the front. Cannas from Eyes' coop will join them in the back of the bed next Spring for full season blooming in that bed.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, no!! Forgot about cannas from Eyes' co-op!!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Hey Terrie! You'll have to link me where you're going from now on. LOL I have really hard time finding things (AND people!) here on DG. "Don't get around much anymore." ;-)

You're sure welcome Starr...glad I finally knew something that could help someone. :-)

~julie~

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

A funny thing, Julie. I "watch" so many threads that when I log on, by the time I read all of the new entries and respond, read and respond, etc., sometimes I never get to check out anything new! I'm trying to break myself of watching every thread (unless I have actually participated) so that I can get around more! BTW, my little potato vine cuttings are so cute!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Terrie - I'm the same way! So many watched threads I forget to go back to the forum to see if there is something new.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

LOL Terrie...AND Moby, I know what you're saying. And then when things slow down a bit on the ones I'm watching, I take time to clean house! THEN I forget where I was. hehehe

Terrie, glad the SP vines are taking off for you. By the time srping comes I'll have a basement FULL of plants...and that's just the cuttings! I still have the original tubers to go along with them. LOL

~julie~

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

adding mulch to the notes...

I only recently found out to go back to the forum to check for new threads... I get lost on here all the time... I end somewhere that I don't know how I got there and just hangout to chat with whoever is there and then try to find my way back again... lol.. I do have alot that are on the watch thread page... and those i can find easy...

Thanks for all your help... Hi Moby, I haven't bumped into you lately!! Missed ya...

Julie... cleaning house... ah, I KNEW I was forgetting something...

Having so much fun...

Starr

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Hey all! Julie you must be busy with your winterizing efforts? You've been scarce on here this past week.

Brenda
Who is OUT of the bulb-planting mood and still have more to go.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Brenda,
I haven't even started planting my bulbs yet. Wanted to give it a little longer because we have still been warm and I don't want them breaking ground before winter. I am not looking forward to the planting.

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

I didn't have that many to plant... but it is all done... if I could, I would come up and help y'all plant them... I like the planting... I talk to them as they go in the ground... lol...

Will the bulbs keep til next year if you don't plant them?

Question: can cedar shavings be used for mulch? I am running extremely low on my normal mulch ( it isn't done cooking yet) and it looks like it is gonna get down in the low 40's at night this week.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I haven't started mine either! If it ever stops raining I'll be able to get their new bed done!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Starr - I don't think you probably need to worry too much about mulch in your zone. I don't mulch mine other than the oak leaves that have fallen there. But if you really want to, you could also use pine needles.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Starr - you don't want to store lily bulbs overwinter. They need to get back into the ground or potted up. They are not like tulips or daffs that can be stored. They must remain "hydrated". If they dry out they are goners.

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Moby... I think there are a few pine trees back in the woods, I could take a ride back there tomorrow... I know you are right about that mulch, but I am concerned about the new bulbs I just planted... they are not in a very protected place... and I don't want to lose any of them... I have a large pile of cedar shavings and thought maybe I could sprinkle that around the bed...

I have a lot of oak leaves that build up... and the bottom layer will get real soggy... should I rake them out ever so often? or just let them build up?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I don't bother with the leaves until spring. About the time that things start warming up, I will rake the leaves and discard the wet, matted ones. Then I'll throw the dry ones back on because we will still have some frosty mornings to come. It's not real critical. When the lilies are up a couple of inches I remove all of the leaves.

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

Moby, are you still up? I have a question....

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Yeessss?

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

you have mail

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

... Julie you must be busy with your winterizing efforts? You've been scarce on here this past week.

Brenda

Nope...just waiting for the last package of plants to arrive and they did and now they're planted. AND I've been doing a little organization of the seeds I've recieved from my wonderful friends here at DG. I'm SO excited about what has happened with the plants I've brought indoors for the winter thought not terribly fond of finding those nice big GREEN caterpillars that came in with them. ARGHH! LOL (But it *does* keep me on my toes, let me tell ya. :-D )

I've spent several days potting up and repotting my pelargoniums and coleus, then cleaning up the mess I've made for doing it. hehehe (I'm a notorious 'mud slinger' (hehehe) when it comes to garden DIRT!) It's WONDERFUL when I can replace 'silk' plants in my home with the *real* thing! (It's hard to believe that at one time I actually considered putting artificial geranium plants in my window boxes. ROTFLOL)

Brenda...you'll see more of me in the weeks to come. ;-)

~julie~

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

Hi Julie!... Missed ya.... I have been having problems getting the plants I brought in to adjust and several have just gave up on me... sigh... gotta lot to learn yet... anyway, 'mud slinging' sounds great (is there any other way?) and it sounds like you have been havin' fun...
