OK, RosemaryK - I didn't think a talk about the birds and the bees would be necessary here...
Encourage the pollinators (when it comes to the genus Ilex) and enjoy the breezes for cooling off. Maybe someone around (you) will plunk in an Ilex decidua 'Red Escort' to partner with those lovely ladies.
weather in the garden # 139
Yep. I did take sex ed. Lots of pollinator insects here. So Ilex decidua pollinates Ilex opaca? I didn't know that.
Rain this morning. I was happy to see it a we planted iris seedlings on Sat.
71° overcast 'pop-up' showers are predicted
Partly cloudy, more humid than yesterday....still no rain....
The rain has not appeared......seriously worried about well & gardens.....
Even with the rain we had up to a day ago, the ground is rather dry. No wonder wth the high 80 and 90 degree days. More rain predicted for this afternoon so we may be lucky.
our rain has been difficult to measure, although a bit under a half inch combination of the last 2 rains. 71°
Rained hard last evening....for 10 min! Some towns in CT had over 2"....not here....
75 & sunny No rain here last night--went north & south of us.
77 and Sunny here. Beautiful day. We are going to have Sunshine for the next 7-days here in
New Jersey !
Hi Iris Guy.....same weather for us....beautiful end to August.....
72 & sunny No sign of rain until possibly next week.
58° supposed to be in the mid-70s today.
Sunny & 80s for the next 4 days.....no rain in sight!
61° supposed to go to 80° sunny
Already 80 here.
Forecast is for low 80s.....sunny, breezy, heavenly!
went from 60's to 80's and humid today
It was less humid in the am here too, for sure, then climbed to the 80s. Just as a little cooler weather came this week, the baby Abies Alba pryamidalis tree just dried up and died in its pot, but the soil seemed OK, (sigh). The Compacta seedling is still fine.
Oooh...sad to lose a baby conifer! About 10 drops of rain fell here today....some parts of CT got heavy showers........my garden is DRY!
Dry here as well, but the grass seems to grow. DH did a lot of mowing today.
My front lawn is still green & growing...the back, not so much......overcast, hazy, hot, breezy.....
80° Greener grass in front of the house as thee is more shade from the frees. More brown to the rear, but as it gets more sun. tough old pasture grass around the iris beds. No problem with that. It will green up when it rains.
90 degrees today but it didn't feel like it. The soil is dry dry dry, soaking up as much water as I can get into it. However, the irrigation options are improving....
Good news! DH finished installing a faucet on one side of the house. From its line, we will run a hose up the hill for another faucet. He got a lot of information about simpler ways to do that from the staff at the Polly Hill Arboretum. The house I grew up in had faucets on all four sides, but we forgot to spec ours that way.
And, two more miniature conifers to water. Pinus parviflora glauca nana and a globe shaped balsam (nana) are looking very dapper. Hurray for presales! Without much bargaining, these beauties came home from the nursery.
A good present for Mom, Rosemary! Wish I had enough water in my well to water the plants, but I don't....they're on their own! Another hot sunny day today....am babysitting my 3 grandkids, but at some point I'll take them back to their place so we can all swim.....
And such an inviting pool to swim in, too. Enjoy!!!
76° going to low 80s. Back to 90 tomorrow. ugh! Come on Mother Nature, it's Sept. No rain in sight.
Yes, the watering task is not simple.
Jan, the pool was too warm yesterday....hard to believe when it's usually so cold up there....except the day you were up there with me....that was probably the hottest day ever in Goshen & Cornwall...can't believe we found that car repair place in the middle of the woods! Another 90 degree day here....maybe a spot shower tomorrow....hoping for one!
Hehehe, that car repair guy was a Godsend!!! We had a nice visit didn't we?!!! The fries at that cafe were AWESOME!!! Oh and the ice cream..YUM!! Sounds like all we did was eat.
Except for the 3 bee stings I got! I go to Patti's Restaurant about once a month.......have the eggplant fries occasionally......they're good, but I worry about fried foods, so I try to cut down.....Another hot & humid day here......am praying for showers!
70° near the coast. great!
I'll have to share them with you, sometime.
That would be nice, Jan! Cooler air has moved in.....not a raindrop in sight.....
Perhaps some more adventures for Jan and Marilyn?
thunderstorms here overnight. 66 and climbing with sun coming out.
Fall plant orders are starting to arrive!
HOT in New Jersey ! No sign of Fall here at all.
Warm weather is to persist.
The Crickets are still chirping!
Not time to plant the Fall bulbs quite yet here !
Should be in the seventies today with some thunderstorms. I will welcome it so it will soften the ground so I can divide some plants.
67° up to 70 which is good. No rain; storms last night were to the west & south of us.
Saw some lightening and heard some thunder and got very excited only to have it slip right on by. AAAACCCCKKKKK!!!!!
