Morning Glories 2013 # 04

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I have never heard of that, but I will look for it. All we have here is home depot, or wal mart.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

This is one of several coming up in the weeds. This one comes out of Purpurea, Carnival of Venice. I think its
Jamie Lynn. # 1 and 2

I'm sorry to hear of Debra's sister passing. Very sad news.

Just got back from traveling over the weekend. I missed two days of not seeing my morning glories so I'm glad to be back home.

Nice blooms Jackie.

Bad news! be in good health is a true treasure!

That flower that nobody likes! .... Ipomoea purpurea, but here, only one plant and a lot of qualities:
Tri-lobed foliage, sometimes six stars stripes and sometimes streaked flowers!
The jackpot!

My heart is breaking for Debra but so glad her sister is now pain free. I've seen cancer in action and it's a horrible monster.

Dany I am actually a Ipomoea purpurea fan! Love the streaked one!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone. Dany, those blooms are awesome!
Jackie, love your white blooms too! Very pretty.

Gautier, MS

Thanks Jackie.

Dany, your ip. purpureas are awesome. You have shown us they are to be enjoyed in the garden.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone! Here a few I have blooming this morning!
And a sunflower that just opened!

Pretty Linda, the blues are my favorite!

Gautier, MS

I agree, very pretty blooms.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Ronnie, I love the purpureas too, very pretty Dany. I'm trying to find my pkt of Star of Yelta. Haven't grown that one
in yrs, would love to this yr if I find my sds.
Beautiful blooms Linda. I love the pretty soft blue and the bright blue.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

This is my only bloom so far, Calystegia pubescens 'Tenshi Botan'
Joseph shared some roots with me last year and they survived the winter in large pots. Lots of buds are showing up.

First bloom from Dany's mix, it's not in the ground, I just got the bloom to cover the large cup under it.
Sunsmile, I'm sure is going to turn all blue soon.
Karens2005 Pink x Choco blzd.
Bengei from Azuremore

More gorgeous blooms Helena. Your Tie Dye is a beauty.
Love your other blooms too.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I agree, those are beauties!

Enigma ... not yet been resolved ... purpurea with variegated foliage! .... to study!

Last picture ... no ... no it is not Variegated Spade Leaf Philodendron !

Very interesting!

Nice Dany, wonder what the flowers will look like?

I am so proud, but envious too- this tie dye is blooming 6" off the ground at my neighbors (my seedling that I gave him) and the ones I kept aren't even blooming! The foliage is lush and 6' high- there are buds but no flowers!

Beautiful bloom Jo, reminds me of Flying Saucer. If your have buds on yours, feed them with bloom booster and you should have blooms within 2 weeks.

About variegated foliage I found that :
It's probably a Chimera !
Chimera is a genetic abnormality that can be confused with other diseases or disorders. Chimera results in leaf variegations - patterns of white to yellow intermixed with green. Because this is a genetic abnormality, all leaves usually have a similar pattern; however, occasionally one or two leaves may be affected.
Propagation by cuttings.

An other Chimera : canna Cleopatra.
..... and tobacco variegata ..but for that one you can buy seeds .... So ????

(Zone 7a)

Dany - you said "So ????"

Maybe another way to look at this is to remember that Mutation, like Chimera, is another word for genetic abnormality. I'm wondering if all the colors and patterns of Ipomoea nil & purpurea, beyond the original blue Ipomoea nil & (possibly purpurea), were at one time mutations??? Well, we know that many of these "mutations" for color and pattern have been stabilized over time and that many of them can be inherited by their offspring, if bees etc. are controlled.

I'm sure there is more to this - am very interested to hear other comments.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Love the variegated purp Dany.

Very pretty blooms Helena.

Tomorrow I'll be sending a pic of my variegated pandy, very unusual.

Gautier, MS

Interesting info on leaf variegation.

Thanks Jackie. Waiting to see your variegated pandy leaves too.

These bloomed today. First 2 blooms are from the same vine, probably light blue tie dye. Last 2 blooms are from Dany's seeds.

Beautiful blooms, and awesome info!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Helena, I'm sure my pandy has made smaller tubers around the mother tuber. This one is showing variegated leaves
and is coming from a small offset tuber. Least I think it is.
You can see something is eating it. A shame that pandy is so hard to propagate from cuttings. I've tried
with no success. Perhaps something in the soil right at that spot might account for the variegation.

The Blue Tie Dye is beautiful. Love the 2nd bloom from Dany's sds, very pretty. I hope
I get a Blue Tie Dye out of my sds.

Pretty Helena!
Jackie I love the variegated leaves!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Very pretty!

szarvas, Hungary

WoW! Jackie ... you got it !
The bulbs are resistant to winter .... I suppose.
Maybe try layering propagation when the plant will be larger!

Where is the border between Chimera and genetic mutation - why some plants have chimera and the next plant have nothing ?
What causes the Chimera?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Dany, the pandy is very hardy here.
I might try pinning it to the ground to root. Regardless, I'll be watching to see if this one returns
next yr as a variegated vine.

Gautier, MS

Jackie, very nice leaves on your pandy.

I'm getting very few blooms now.

Thanks everyone.
Beautiful bloom Helena, love the pretty colors.
Hopefully your new blooms will start to open soon.
A bumble bee got after me this am. I wish now I had not even gone outside cause it ended badly
for my Sony camera. When the bee tried to go up my shirt sleeve, I screamed and dropped my camera and it landed
on the lens . I bought a new Sony but this one may
not be as good. I have 2 weeks to return it though.
I can't believe I dropped it.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Oh no, those darn bees are bad. Hope you did not get stung?

Gautier, MS

Jackie thanks. I hope you didn't get stung either. I'm sorry to hear about your camera. I know how you feel about a favorite camera. I loved my Kodak Easy Share but it walked off with somebody. They don't even make them anymore. I do like my phone camera though.
