ORVG #194 Early summer crazy

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Pat, I guess I may qualify for the most ER visits and hospital stays! I sure hope I don't ever repeat it though.

Sue, congrats to the kids on their wins. I am sure that they enjoy competing. Oh, sounds like you may have a new side business raising silkies to sell.

Lou are you feeling better? Take it easy.

Chele, did they set a surgery date for Carly? I want to put it on my calender so that I can keep her in my prayers.

Pat, next week, I will compete with you for the laziest day award. I have been going full speed ahead, trying to get this retirement reception all planned and it will be over tomorrow afternoon. I am hoping to have at least one day where I can just sit and do nothing, before I start canning tomatoes. I will not be doing any juice, but will make the roasted tomato sauce, probably do some for my DS and his SO, as they work so much they probably won't have time to come and do it.

DH is off to a horse event tonight. He went to one last night. Since his DB is sick and cannot compete with his draft horses, my DH has taken over. He won the contest both last night and tonight (he called to tell me). I told him that there isn't any money budgeted for him to buy Belgians this year. Holy cow, good pulling horses cost upwards of $50,000, and they eat a lot too.

Well, I am heading to bed shortly. I have invited the preacher, his wife and another congregation member to come to my house for lunch, so they wouldn't have to drive back to their homes, then come back to church for the reception. Nothing fancy, I cooked a ham, baked beans, made potato salad and watermelon for dessert. Since we will be having cake and punch at church, I didn't want to make anything too heavy.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Bonnie, that all sounds pretty good. If I could drive farther than the grocery, I'd come on down myself.
Just watched the final part of the Heptathlon (which was all they televised). The leader, and winner, was a British girl who performed so beautifully, and won the race and the gold medal. She had lots of support from her fellow Brits, and then they all sang "God Save the Queen" together at the medal ceremony. That was one happy stadium!

Bonnie, Carly's surgery will be Thursday. I won't know what time or anything until they call me on Tuesday. I think they said something about getting there 4 hours early?? It's an hour and a half drive each way. It will only be a 45 minute outpatient surgery. Kind of scary. Thank you for the prayers!

Sue, ACL injuries are very common. Those ligaments in there are very small. All it takes is one good knock to the knee when it's twisted just right or when your foot is firmly on the ground. The doctor said they are extremely common in girls that age. She would be fine walking around on it, maybe for years but runs the risk of instability, leg locking, etc. I'm thankful that she can have the surgery because she loves sports so much. She's lost when she can't play. Luckily, she is very good.

That dinner does sound pretty good! I love ham. :)

I guess I'm going to get to bed. The older three girls, Nolan and I went to Sam's earlier, bought a bunch of stuff to stock the concession stand, dropped it off and got home about 10:30. I'm having problems sleeping anymore. I lay in bed and toss and turn until 4 in the morning anymore. I'll be glad when I get a handle on life. pfft.

Lou, are you doing okay?

Hope everyone is well!

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

Chelle, thanks for asking. I'm feeling better and have a little more energy now. I'm acting like I'm 100% so my body will get the hnint. LOL I get more blood work done on Wednesday. If it is all okay, I'll get on the schedule for arthoscopy on my knee. It has a lot of calcium deposits and "junk" in there and maybe a torn ligament. I was scheduled to have when I got sick and so that got postponed. I'm ready to get to normal again, but maybe at my age, normal doesn't apply anymore.

Has Morgan taken her driving test yet? I'm so glad she used her money wisely and got a car. You should be so proud of all you kids. I envy you as a mom. I didn't ever feel like I was good mom with only two girls. I did my best, but they don't see it that way. Life is perspective, and everyone sees reality differently. Its a beautiful day and I 've got the laundry done so I'm going to sit on the porch and enjoy. Lou

Bonnie, you mentioned Dave deadheading. When he deadheads, it looks like I have a stick garden instead of a flower garden. He trys but I'd rather he didn't deadhead.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

That's good to hear Lou. I was watching videos of what they are going to do to Carly. Sounds very similar to what you are talking about. They'll have to clean out the old ligament then cut out a piece of hamstring to replace it. Bleck.

Both of my oldest took their tests and I'm sure I'm not supposed to discuss it. LOL Morganne knocked over a cone with her passenger mirror. Instant fail. She did pass the driving part. Kristenne passed the maneuverability but got nailed on the driving. She was at a red light and was stopped but she let her foot off the break to roll up so she could see. The officer said she had to 'intervene' because she was going to turn left on a red light. Needless to say they were both pretty ticked. They can't go back until the 18th. Grrr. I had to laugh though. Morganne said it was bull that the cones are in the same formation at the same distance no matter what size your car is.

We have a friend who's husband is the used car manager down on Beechmont. We got Craig's car from him and called him again for Morganne's. He treated her well. He knocked $1,500 off the price and also got her a 3% rate and no money down.

Parenting is a strange animal. I don't think most kids think their parents did/do a perfect job. I think I'm doing a good job as far as being there for them. I'm definitely more positive than my parents ever were. Unfortunately we are not doing a better job supporting them financially. But I'm doing the best I can for them. It's been tough between trying to get them to after school stuff and trying to find anywhere in podunk to work. Craig's wages are still the same and won't be changing any time soon. I think everyone just does the best they can with what they have.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Still wish you were close with all the labor. I had 8 paid helpers Friday & 7 today. Takes lots of bodies to "Get er Done" here.
Sorry to hear about the ACL. Hope all turns out well.
Bernie

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Chele, of course I don't know the whole story, but I think you do a remarkable job with parenting. You may not be rich and have money to do everything, but in the end, they will remember the times you all were together and did things that didn't cost money.

I was in high school before I knew my parents were poor. They made up for it in love.

Lou, let us know when your surgery is scheduled. I am hoping that things will be much better after the surgery. I wish there was an easy painless way to operate on the lower back and get rid of that pain.

Made roasted tomato sauce today. Only had 8 pints, but it sure smelled good, and my house still smells like it. I did the chunky kind today with big pieces of veggies in it, and will add mushrooms when I open it to use.

Bernie, I bet it is hard to get workers who will stick it out. They all want the cushy jobs.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks Bernie. If we were closer, we would help. Heck, the kids would be thrilled to have extended relatives.

Thank you Bonnie. I do always let them know that I am trying and that I wish I could do more. I watched Abandoned and Deceived last night. Funny how you identify with people in similar situations. It did make me feel a little better. I've always been honest with my kids because I don't want them to think anything is this way because we want it to be or because we are okay with it. But they also know people go through much worse and have much less.

The sauce sounds great!

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

It took all summer, but now we have very good help.
One girl I hired full time in March. She is a graduate of the horticulture program at the U of Minnesota. Top employee!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Just popping in for an update.

We have to be at the hospital at 9:30am tomorrow for Carly's surgery. If all goes well, we should be back out of the hospital in 4-6 hours.

Please keep her in your prayers.

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Prayers going up for Carly and gang!

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Wishing her the best!!

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Chele will have you in my prayers tomorrow for a successful surgery and a quick recovery.

I went grocery shopping today, and it was so hot. Had to hit Walmart and the pharmacy too, so I didn't get home until about 1:00. I decided to take the rest of the day, sat and read which morphed into a nap. Then had to cook supper. Bible Study tonight at 7:00. We started a study on Esther, which seems to be at first glance very interesting.

One of my church friends called today and told me that he had been appointed interim pastor for a little country church. He was previously just a lay speaker, so this is a big step for him. He is to attend a 2 week cram course before being licensed to preach. He wanted to know if I would be interested in attending with him. Nope, no way, I will speak when asked, but not gonna get credentials that would single me out.

Guess I will be back to canning tomorrow. Have more tomatoes to do something with.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thank you. :)

hope the surgery goes well for her Chelle.
one more day of fair left and i m so ready for it to be over .... :P

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Okay, Chele, tell us how the surgery went. Have had you in my thoughts and prayers all day.

I played with paperwork all day today. I balanced 4 checkbooks, paid some bills then started on some reports for church. I couldn't sit there and do it all at once, so i would take a break, then go back later to do some more.

Janet, did you get any rain tonight? We had some about 6:00. Probably had over an inch. It came straight down very hard. Had some wind and thunder and lightening too.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh gosh! I thought I did post here earlier...

Surgery went fine, no surprises and the surgeon said her knee looks great. We won't get to see it until tomorrow when we take her bandages off. Her $700 brace (which I call her bionic leg) goes from mid shin to high mid thigh, is now packed with bandages and wraps and a cryo cuff and we can't see anything other that fat bandages in a brace! They cryo cuff is pretty cool. It's kind of like a knee brace shaped ice pack with a hose attachment. We have to plug it in to an electric cooler every hour and it circulates ice water through the pack to keep swelling down.

She goes for a follow up with the surgeon on Tuesday and will start physical therapy right away. She's on crutches until she put weight on her leg. We lucked out with the physical therapy since Melissa knew of a place close to the school. I called and they take our insurance so she can go right after school. Otherwise it was going to be a scheduling nightmare not to mention gas!

Anyway, we had to drive an hour and a half to the hospital and be there at 9:30am. She was finished by 12:15 or so and in recovery. It took the bum 2 hours to fully wake up. LOL We left about 2:30, had to drive the hour and a half back home, stopped at Kroger for 4 prescriptions and she wanted Taco Bell so we stopped for lunch. We hadn't eaten since about 10:30 last night. She was a little queasy but doing okay when we ran into a friend at a stop sign. She told us her son puked after surgery and was glad Carly was okay. Of course as soon as we pulled away, Carly gave up the few bites she had eaten then threw up again about ten minutes later. By the time we got home, she was able to eat and keep it down. I guess we got home around 5pm. She's comfy in my bed with a laptop, phone, fan and TV. I just woke up from about an hour nap and I could go right back to bed!

Thank you so much for the prayers. We are all okay! :)

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Sorry that she puked, but glad that everything else worked out well.
We had about 6 drops of rain here, Bonnie, but Indiana, KY, and the east side of the Cincy area seemed to be getting baptism by immersion. I'm still glued to the Olympics, but I'm sorting and throwing out papers and magazine by the bushel, so I'm feeling productive, at least.
Pat

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Pat, what sport is it that looks like a combination of ballet and gymnastics with a small ball or hula hoop? I've never seen that before!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Rhythmic gymnastics. They work with a ball, 2 batons, hoops and/or really long ribbons. The ribbons are extra cool. They have to be gymnasts, ballerinas, and have eyes as good as shooters or archers as they toss their into the air, twirl around or tumble, and then pick them up before they hit the ground. (I had to fix that sentence... the way I had it first made it seem like they tossed their eyes in the air--duh.)
How's the invalid today?
Our power was out last night for over an hour. It must have been a fairly small outage: from the front door, it was all dark, from the back door, the neighbors there had lights. We finally got about a third of an inch of rain. Much nicer today, that's for sure.
Pat

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I was watching it at the medical center while I was waiting for Carly. It was so pretty and graceful! I only saw three with the balls and one with the hula hoop.

Carly is doing great! She's napping now. She could have had her pain meds at 6am and 6:30 am but didn't ask for anything until after 10 and even then she only took one. Later in the day, she took the other and that is probably why she's napping. LOL We took the bandages off today and it looks really good! I'm waiting for a nurse to call me back because the surgical nurses didn't realize there was optifoam (?) used. The rest of the stuff can get wet but that is not fully covered so I need to know how to deal with that. I'm really pleased with how it looks, considering what was done to her yesterday! Photo below.

She also received a very nice surprise from some of our new WB youth soccer friends. :)

Good to hear she is doing well.
We have one truck & the trailer loaded for tomorrow's market. The rest is in the cooler & goes in the other truck in the morning. We leave at about 5:35.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Chele, great to hear such good news about Carley. Incision looks very good for just the day after surgery. Awww, what a pretty bouquet.

I must have missed that olympic event. I did see some of the syncronized ?? swimming the other day.

Had a Dr appointment this morning. Having a reaction to the experimental drug, and she suggested that we take a 2 week vacation from it, and then start it again.

Just in from the casino. We went for the buffet and did play the slots for about an hour. DH came out about $200 winner, and I lost $20. so not too bad if you look at the overall. We did some car shopping on the way there. Talking about trading cars, but just in the early stages of beginning to look.

Chelle glad to hear everything went well .. .except for the vomit... :)
not much going on here just rest and lazy today
need to catch up on the Olympics.
pretty nice out 59 today brrrr. but a nice walk with the dog this morning with a sweater... my garden has not seen me in weeks. it is a mess.... :(

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks Sue! She's doing well. She was out of bed for several hours and came out and sat on the couch.

I can't even see my gardens. LOL With the riding mower and weed eater dead, that left me with a push mower. I quickly lost that battle.

This weather is rather pleasant but it sure isn't motivating me to do anything...

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Chele, glad to hear the surgery was successful (despite the need for it). Wishing Carly a fast recovery!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks Darius! The girl loves her sports. This was just an unfortunate accident.

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

pulling the jalepeno's tuesday and then cabbage on wensday...
tearing down the garden this week. then its salsa time !!

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Sue, I need a good salsa recipe, if you have one. I have tons of tomatoes and peppers and it would do my heart good to be able to make something out of them besides roasted tomato sauce, tomato juice, whole tomatoes and anything else that can be done with tomatoes. Seems we ALWAYS have good luck growing them.

Bonnie i make the salsa in the Ball Canning Books. The one with cilantro is the one i got 1st place at fair with . :)
I wish i had your luck with tomato's.. this year was a bust for me.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Wish you were closer, I could give you about 2-3 bushel tomorrow.

me too Bonnie. the price for tomato's here is 1.99 lbs and there is a waiting list for canner's...
what is the secret to growing tomato's ??? will your DH share his secret ? :)
good morning everyone
Chelle hope Carly had a nice sleep
Pat how was the olympic last day at closing ceremonys ? i missed it. kids wanted to watch Buck the documentary on the horse whisperer. i was out voted .

Hi Cookie. good to see you :)
Bernie how is market going ? that is an early morning for you
well not much going on today but the mall for school clothes with MIL.
can't say if it it will rain or what today ? i hope not , i just sprayed ! ack :P
good day to you all

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Sue, water, water and more water. Our water bills for the past couple of months are so high, if we figured up how much is invested in the tomatoes it would probably be way more than 1.99 a lb.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Sue, I thought the closing ceremonies were kind of yech. They kept on with the theme of the history of British music, but I personally don't think that disco, Spice Girls, and punk really constitute music worth showcasing. They did, however, at one point, put up a video of John Lennon singing Imagine. That got a lot of sing-alongs from the athletes and the crowd. The song that got the best reception, with everyone singing was--- wait for it-- Eric Idle singing Always Look on the Bright Side of Life. Even people that looked like English wasn't even their third language were singing right along. And before the powered down the Olympic flame, they made a point of saying that there was a "blossom" for each of the nations that had sent athletes to London, and that it would be disassembled so that each country would be able to take its blossom home in celebration and remembrance of the 2012 games. That was nice.

I have trouble with tomatoes, too. My problem is either bugs or critters or blossom end rot. Or too much shade or not enough water. One of my neighbors prunes his plants to a single strong vine, and gives the tomatoes treats of banana skins. I don't know: some years I get great tomatoes and some years I get stinkers.

I'm still in the midst of organizing and cleaning everything at my house. At the moment, I'm working on my family history materials. I hope I can complete it before I'm 89 and getting carted off to the nursing home!

Pat

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Not sure where everyone went!!

Sad news this morning....my Dad passed away in his sleep last night. I'm doing okay. So happy to have had these last months with him here.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Joyce,

I'm really sorry to hear about your Dad. It sounds as thought it was peaceful and expected. It's still a great loss to lose anyone, especially a parent. Keeping you in thoughts and prayers.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Aww Joyce, I am so sorry to hear this news. But if one has to go a peaceful death is a blessing. Will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Dearest Cookie
I m so honored to have spent time with your dad. He was one of the sweetest men. Your mom must have been so lonely in heaven with out him and they are together again . I love you
many many hugs
sue and family

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Thank you, Both...it was indeed a blessing as that is how he wanted to go (me, too) and he was smiling until the end. I don't think I could have endured another death like my mother went through. God is good.....
