Plant propagation part XXII based on my own experience

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Howdy:
we left at about 2pm its like 3 to 4 hours. we noticed what looked like rain bands and some funky cloulds as we were driving. It was a front we passed under as we went back home. its what is rocking me at this moment. we got some rain last night. so at least there is some positive from it.

lol it makes me think back to the old saying" i want to die in my sleep ....not screaming like the other passengers"....
yes kim does a lot of the driving for us but I do spell her at times and if she can't I usually can suck it up and cover for her. travel is kind of tough on me.

Dawn: the cold does a number on the back and joints but everyone is different. I agree with your hubby. if he has issues there is no reason for hime to touch a box except maybe to put what he can in one. One thing to consider is that no matter where you go there will always be shifts in the weather that will no agree with him. the trick is to find somewhere he is comfotable with the fewest changes possible. even in south florida they have weather shifts and fronts to deal with. its a personal thing I know.

Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

OK, now I understand what you are talking about Dave. Sounds like a good day to take it easy. Can't do much on holidays anyway. These are the kind I call semi-holiday. For some only. When I was working for the feds, they were holidays. LOL Now that I am retired, they are semis.

JB, I have a whole lot of green tomatoes out there and it is suppose to freeze tomorrow night. So, if I am going to do anything with them I need to decide if I am going to pick them today or not.

What did you say you do with them green, and can I have the recipe???? Please???

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

We won't have a freeze until about the day of Thanksgiving, The tree leaves fall then... often all in one day and green, some years.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Jeanette ..... I copied this from another thread

MARY

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Thanks Merry. I made one once and didn't like it. JB has one for a relish or something that she says is a secret. It's only a secret if you will share. LOL

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Sounds like a southern thing. I can't imagine green tomatoes being anything yummy.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

JB ~ I agree with you on the ebay situation. I have stopped selling altogether. I will be donating my gardening magazines and maybe I will go the the rose forum to see if anyone wants the rose books and my collection of really nice catalogues. That would be for those who have the room (and no deer) to grow a lot of them. I just like to grow a few in the gardens I have, but right now the only one I have is a pretty peachy-colored one in the "peach of a garden".
I am sorry to learn the situation about your friend. It is sad to learn that people are trying to take advantage of a dying woman. I hope that things sort themselves out properly in the end.

Sharon ~ I am glad that Vern is home, and I hope you don't have to make that call to 911! Please take some pictures of your new oleanders. They sound quite pretty. We leave on our trip tomorrow. Our first stop will be Mariposa, CA. Also my husband wants to visit Hornitos, Ca to see if he can find anything out about the 500' panorama of Yosemite valley his great-great grandfather painted in 1857 there.

Jeanette ~ Yes holidays.....I used to have to work a lot of those. Now we avoid them and travel after the holiday. Usually we avoid the weekends as well, when possible, but we will be traveling for about a week or so. I will be taking the laptop so I will check in from time to time, especially since most motels have free high-speed wireless these days.
Stinkbugs bugged me all last winter. I do not know how they got in the house but they were quite annoying. Sometimes when I went to bed and was almost asleep one would get on me or when I was in bed reading would land on my book and stare at me....YIKES!! (Ugh!!)

Dawn ~ Welcome back! Our leaves have already started to fall as well as quite a few pine needles. I won't bother to rake now as there will be more waiting for me when we get back from our little trip to Southern CA for my 50th high school reunion. We are going to take the scenic route meandering our way instead of the usual rush there-rush home routine we used to do when we worked. It has been quite a while since we have taken any trips since my operations, as I have been in PT for a long time. I hope that you find a good home for your doggie.

Dave ~ You keep me laughing all the time the way you spell things. I wonder sometimes if you do it on purpose....I don't need to say "cheese" to smile after reading your posts, well some of them anyway. I am glad you had fun with your grandkids as they grow fast and then you wonder where they are when they become teenagers then get even older.

Jeanette ~ I have a couple of people coming over, one who lives across the road from me, to pick tomatoes while we are away. Just the small ones are still producing so if we don't have a freeze, there will probably be even more when we get back home. The OSU Blues did the best, as they are slightly larger than a cherry and have been producing all season. The currant tomatoes are producing gobs right now, but I don't care much for them. The "blues" are sweet and tasty. Would you like some seeds for next year? I am sorry your growing season has been cut off. I hope you can find some tasty green tomato recipes. If not, they will still ripen in the house at room temperature. We use to do that in the past when I grew tomatoes years ago. This is the first time in 20 years I have grown them again from seed after my other experience. I will tell you about that sometime, if I have not yet already done so.....if you like.

Well folks, I must go now and make the final preparations for the trip. Have a good evening everyone. Have fun in the garden!

~ Evelyn

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well Evelyn, you will be the belle of the all. Have a wonderful time.

Jnette, my neighbors love fried green tomatoes. You could find the recipe on the food network. Type in "What do you do with green tomatoes". Google will tell you.

Dave, you think faster than you can type. I love you just the way you are. Do not change.

I went to the greenhouse yesterday and today. My partner and myself met the owner because we did not know how to operate the cooling and fans. He showed us and really wants us to have fun and grow what ever we want. I think he is done, Just a toy to him. I took some photos. We have about 1/2 of the greenhouse in planters. The rest is empty.

Evelyn, the double bloom oleanders are only about 1' tall. Not in bloom. Do you want a photo of the cutting with roots?

Vern is doing better but his blood pressure today is 150/80. He did not get up until noon. I had a meeting this morning so when I got home I assumed he was upstairs in his "man" cave. I delivered our taxes to the accountant. I drove by 3 very large nurseries and did not stop. I, at this time, do not need another plant. I am so far behind in this thread I might have to start from here. I have a whole bunch to do tomorrow.

The weather today was beautiful. High of 88 and clear blue skies. I will work in the garden tomorrow and get my winter vegetables planted and dig up a few more roots.
Later friends.

I am now going to post a few photos. First one is to heirloom tomatoes in the greenhouse. That is not my arm. It belongs to the young man that is my partner.

Might start just to see if it works for a bit.

Evelyn, your trip sounds Heavenly. It has been so many years since we have been on a leisurely trip like the kind I enjoy, that I sure miss them. Since we have the 2 dogs and hate to kennel them we don't go anywhere. I hate it!!

Well, this thing is acting up again, think I will give up and go to bed. nite everyone, ttyl

Pretty bush, never heard of it Sharon.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Wow, you guys had a busy day yesterday. It was my day off. My kids took me to the eye doctor for my 6 mos. check up and all is well, Thank God.
We then went to lunch at one our favorite restaurants and then off to find Mums for the barnyard decorations. Back to the Veterans Cemetery to see a brick that was put in honor of my late husband, Maj. Edward H. Berger, ret. at the USMC section. Really nice idea.
Then to my church to see another brick that was put there in honor of him. Lots of brick around here. LOL We then came home, I was so far behind in orders, etc. that I got to work and the kids went to a movie to relax.
On the way home from the cemetery we saw a loose horse and of course we had to catch it, and take it home. We do this all the time and it gets to be a joke. I think people leave there horses out for us to catch when they know we are going down their roads. Since my daughter is the Equine Specialist for the Stat of New Jersey it is only fitting we spend our day off chasing loose horses.....this one was pretty good and actually turned around and headed back to his home and we followed. She was beside him with a lead rope (we all carry them in our trucks and other vehicles that is how much a habit this has become) walking and we were in the truck making sure he did not turn around and run.
The people who owned the horse were home and very happy to see us.
I am about to go feed my cats and take a walk before it rains again. We are expecting a Nor'easter this week so I called the tree man this morning and ask him to come and get the big branch down that could fall on the house before that storm comes. I hope he gets the message. LOL
See you all later when I get my shipping done and errands run. Hugs. JB

Hi peeps!

Busy, busy, busy me. I seeded about 1/6 of the area that has little or no grass yesterday.

Then when it was too dark for outside work, I made stuff peppers.

Still trying to get things done, so forgive me for jumping in and out without saying anything constructive. Later. JB

Hi Everyone, I am finally back. We had a great time, but it will feel good to be on a "semi-normal schedule again. I hope to check in more as soon as I get all caught up.
JB I have pretty much left ebay too, but I need to look for another sales source. I can't sell anything from home ( other than an occasional yard sale) so I really need online marketplaces.
I also need to figure out what I really want to specialize in and then grow just that. ( how can you choose?) Anyway, I just wanted to say hi.
I will share a pic with you of my beautiful neice I just got to meet for the first time. Her name is Summer and she is just 2. Absolutely gorgeous and she took all of 2/3 of a second to wrap me around her little finger.
Have a great night everyone.

Today we stopped in Mariposa, CA for the evening, though it is only afternoon. Steve is checking with the librarian about his great-great grandfather and the area of Hornitos, CA where his GGF used to stay, briefly. After looking around town and maybe checking out Hornitos, then we will have dinner. I don't think this motel (in Mariposa) has internet service, so that is why I am here at the library. They have a few botany and wildflower books but not a single one on gardening. I suppose they just enjoy the natural beauty araound here. Right now it is quite warm, maybe 90 degrees or so. It is nice and cool here in the library.

I received some bulbs before we left, soI ditched them into the frig before I left as they were crocus and colchicum. The narcissis I left on the back porch, and I hope that they will be OK.

Jeanette ~ Is your weather nice and warm right now? Maybe there will be some time for your tomatoes to ripen.

Sharon ~ Is Vern behaving himself, or hiding from you? I hope he has the sense to take care of himself, as I am sure that you are as well.

JB How are you doing? Quite busy, eh? With ebay?

Well, we are ready to go now. Take care everyone and have a great evening.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

She looks Polynesian, so cute. Watch out when she is older. Ya know what I never meet people who lived here and now I met another person who lived in Palmdale from here. Her name is Cville. The world got smaller. She sent me a stained glass star and a decorative memorial marker for my Koala's grave. Not the one that died a few weeks ago but for my old lady Pei.

No thanks we just killed a black widdow that size yesterday. I already have a pet under my shoe.

Dave how gross. I don't know if I am on line or not so won't bother to write much. Love the pictures you all. Love the story of the horses JB. That little girl is beautiful Linda. Merry your cactus took on a new look!! LOL

Just watching the miners coming out of the ground. How exciting!!

Gotta go before my computer crashes again.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Merry your grass won't have enough root by the winter freeze will it?

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

OMG if I saw a spider that big at my place I WOULD MOVE IMMEDIATELY. I hate spiders and especially giant ones. I am sitting here scratching just thinking about it. LOL

The tree trimmers arrived this morning and they are trimming all the big trees near the
house before the nor'easter comes tomorrow night. They were not due here until next week to finish trimming up the tree that had the big branch that came down in the wind last week but when they heard there was a nor'easter due tomorrow, they arrived today. Great guys and good friends.

I took all my listings off of eBay and wrote to my customers and told them to write to me privately if they need anything. I made a list of customers from my sales last year and I have been keeping in touch. I just can not afford to have them tell a customer the postage and shipping is almost $1 less than it is too often. I make so little profit on there anyhow due to the fees.

Here in NJ and in PA they do sew grass in the Fall as well as in the Spring. It seems to be o.k. if the birds don't eat the seed before it sprouts.

My little Golden Privit is sprouting new growth on every cutting. I love it.

I just had to turn off the heat and open the GH because the sun is still so warm it get up to the 90s in there at this time of day. Unbelievable; I need to work in the greenhouse and just am not in the mood. The Aimee cuttings I took this summer are turning yellow. I am unsure if it is too much water or too little sun. I just gave them some fish emulsion and hopefully it will perk them up. The cats all came running, they thought it was feeding time when they smell that awful fish. Oh well, sorry kitties....just me feeding the plants.

I must go check on these guys outside. I love watching limbs come down.

Talk later. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, I am going to try that with my Aimee. I brought it in for the winter and I think it might have stopped turning yellow. I lost a lot of leaves. Not sure why. Then I put coffee grounds on the top, didn't you say to do that? Hope so. If not, I suppose I could get most of them off of there. LOL

My computer isn't working very long at a time so going to quit for now. ttl

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

good morning everyone:
I am still carefully looking at everything closely before I pick it up. my niece had told me she had a huge black spider with red on it had come out and was watching her dump old pots of soil into the raised bed out back. i kinda knew she was talking about the black widow. my only concern is wether or not there was another one or if I got the one. I am goung to be spraying everything down with the home de'fence stuffand everything i can think of. we get both brown recluse (fiddle back) and the black widow. I knew something was up when it did not scurry off just came out and stood its ground. it was like waiting for me to move closer so it could attack.....ha ha squish.... Its the 1st black widow I have ever seen.

oh yes before I forget. dawn I don't think you were here way back when, when we chatted about styrofoam cups. we as scroungers and the walking wounded like our tays cloners and other toys, but I am one of those people who feel if you need to use styrofoam cups for seedlings use them. I've know some people that use the little yogert containers, butter dishes and what ever else can be found in the discard section of our households cycle. to me its a green idea that works for those doing only a few plants and is on a budget.
i am sure there are a few (lurkers) out there that do use all of the above and have great success. (please chime in here). i do remember a member that had Japanese maples growing in dixie cups and he had a bumper crop of them.
oh well its another day and I seem to be down again. this is getting really old. up one down one up one down 2 up two down 1.... have a great day everyone. Personally i use one of 3 different types of trays. (1) 8 - 4packs loosely attached to a sheet. 1801's my personal favorite -18 - 3.5" pots loosely attached together in one tray. and the old stand by 40 to 50 cells per tray. when i started I bought a case of odds and ends pots from the discount section of one of the suppliers. next i bought the 3204's (8 - 4pks) and slowly was building up the collection. I try to recycle everyone as much as possible. with me shipping out pot and all now I am sure i will have to buy more 1801's
I guess in a nut shell use what you can afford. no one cares how it looks ... ok no one that matters . if it works dont fix it. just make sure you get proper drainage in the cells you decide to use.
sorry for being long winded. I like the looks of the pvc idea. once its set up it would be aesy to reuse just remember to clean them between uses. I do have one observation or idea on the pvc. I would glue them together to make handleing easier.
have a great day
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I think the pvc would be good for someone who plants a lot and then transplants or re-pots for resale. Glue them is an interesting idea. Maybe 4 together but that is all I would do as they grow at different speeds. Yes, even same seed, same conditions. Would be an interesting experiment. But, not for me. I get too carried away. It would be for winter sowers.

No, I think right now is a good time to seed grass in a lot of the country, using the right seed etc. They do that in the cold temps Dawn. I know, sounds weird.

JB, I was wrong. My Aimee still looks bad. Don't know what to do with her. Going to look thru my stuff and see if I can find something she would like. : )

Sharon, we haven't heard from you. How is Vern doing? Good I hope. Or is he doing so good that you are out planting and don't have time to write?

I am using my desk top computer as the laptop just doesn't want to keep running. Think it might be the router. WAH my daughter and grandson are 400 miles away and he doesn't think he could talk me thru installation of a new one unless he had one just like mine at the time. Now what????

Think I will call the mfg of this one and have them check it out. ttyl,

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Jen, when you move them inside that happens. They do loose leaves and get yellow. No problem. I do not know what coffee grounds do for Aimees mine are used to just plain old Miracle Grow and Fish crap. Nothing else. The ones that were looking pale are coming back since the sun is on them. Sun is their best doctor. I am also going to spray them with iron. That is one thing I do to Aimees if nothing else works. I know that usually takes care of the problem because their little roots are weak. I probably planted them too soon. We will see. I think it is called chlorosis.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Forgot, Dave & Dawn, I didn't get your brugs sent this week so will have to get them out next week. I guess I am stalling 'cause I just don't know how I am going to send them without cutting the Ys way back. These 3 sided boxes are thinner than I thought.

I don't think they are 6" wide like they say. Anyway, I may even have to squeeze them and hope they don't break. I promise next week for one at least. I cut them all back on Monday and don't know if the Cypress Gardens will be ready to put in with them or not. With those I think I might be able to find enough that are not too wide. We'll see, might have to send those separate. Also, I took most all leaves off, but that is ok as they will leaf out soon enough.

ttyl,

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, we crossposted. Tell me about the iron. Is it a liquid? I am assuming? But, you spray it so might not be huh? Let me know asap as we have to go to the city maybe in the next 2 days so I can get some. Thanks, Jen
