2009 Lily Blooms #12
MrsBB ~ sometimes lilies (and daylilies too) have trouble opening and get 'stuck'. Nothing to worry about.
I like to micromanage my lilies and make sure each petal is in the right place. Usually the miscreant petal will pop into place if I tweak it a little bit. I suspect weird weather conditions cause this. I had quite a few that misbehaved like that this spring.
Mrs. Blueberry, don't worry. The vast majority of people here vacation in Indiana at the Dunes, or in Wisconsin. I know about your glorious Traverse City because I went on a business trip there about 25 years ago, when it was a very quiet place. I loved it, so when I met my husband I talked about this fabulous place, and we first went there 18 years ago, and have been back at least five times to TC, Charlevoix, Petoskey, and other wonderful places there. We love to drive Tunnel of Trees in Harbor Springs (the first time, we had it to ourselves - tht has really changed), and go to Omena, where Leelenau Winery is, and where I always buy something at Tamarack Gift Shop.
Yes, traffic is considerably heavier than it was years ago. Happily, when I mention the Upper Lower peninsula people look at me like I'm from Mars. And when I mention TC, their faces go blank. I'll stop talking!
As for your lily, when I have concerns I isolate lilies to an area where they will be a solo act. But it sounds like people more knowledgable than I have answered your question really well.
I have one lily, especially, whose petals stick to each other every year. For others the phenomenon seems to be environmentally related, and only occasionally (or never) occurs.
Todd, I hope more than just your lilies survive!
Bill has now blown pass.....parts of Newfoundland had winds reaching 80 mph...I was lucky that in my area, winds only reached 50 mph, so the lilies survived pretty good...a little bruising on some petals but those in bud were fine...I'll have more to post in the next couple of days! WHEW!
Yes, WHEW! Glad you escaped Bill as we did.
Wonderful Todd! That's great news.
So happy you're okay. And keep those lilies coming.
Yay!! Bill is gone and the lily show continues! :) I'm glad all is well with you in that part of the world.
good to hear, Todd, hurricanes are scary and a big PITA to clean up afterwards, lol.
Very nice.
superb photos
Nice color on all of them too. Thanks for the great lily pictures Todd.
nice Todd
Looks like it has been a good year for lilies everywhere....
Moby, scary shot of me & biker hubby. 3000 miles & 11 days on the road will do that to ya.
Oh... you look just fine for all the miles you've put on. Somehow that doesn't sound very good. ;) You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!
LOL Still waiting for my raccoon tan to go away. I was surprised how well my garden did without me.
I have been taking lots of notes upon seeing all the lilies photos being posted. Unfortunately we missed a month of blooms as we had to be away. Sad for us and for the garden, as it did suffer from our absence. So no pictures of lilies after July 22. We had friends stay in the house while we where gone and they said the lilies where fabulous, but they took no pictures.
I loved the picture that Todd posted called 'Satin Sheets' and the one nanny posted called 'Eudoxia'
Here is a link to the lilies in the garden that bloomed before July 22, 2009. Most are labeled, but some could be labeled wrong and some are ones that I am not sure as to their name. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Patti

oh my goodness Todd's lilies are gorgeous. And bbrookrd -- exquisite photos. So many there I wish I had room for. Thanks to you both for posting those.
Oh, Patti, those are just lovely. Thank you for posting them.
Patti, I'm speechless. how beautiful! I'm so glad I will be getting Starburst next year.
Just wonderful.
Very nice, Patti.
So the first two must be the same. Are they Classic Salmon, or Salmon Classic?
The orange centered white lily at the very bottom left is White Henryi.
all beautiful Patti!!
Beautiful lilies, Patti. I really enjoyed my visit to your page. Sorry you missed many of the blooms!
Thanks all. I will be hopefully not missing a single one next year, including all the new ones I have ordered this fall.
Leftwood, I am so happy to know that that one could be L.White Henyri. I don't show that I planted that one. I did plant both 'Lady Alice' or 'Bright Star' which I know are similar, but not in that bed. So I am going to assume that you are correct and that I did order it at some point and failed to list it or that I got it in instead of something else. No matter it is a beauty. The other one is 'Salmon Classic', which I have now fixed. Very helpful.
I hope I get some help with a few other missing names, that don't seem to match my journals description. When I cut everything back, I will see if I can find some missing names when I can locate their tags. Thanks, Patti
Nice collage Patti. It was a pretty collection of beauty.
According to Brent and Becky, Lady Alice and Bright Star are the same, although it seems everywhere else they are different. Maybe someone can clear that up.
At any rate, White Henryi does not have the recurved petals that the other two do (the tell tale in this case), but also seems to have a larger orange area with a somewhat greater density of flecking.
I have read that they are different, but often listed as the same. Here is the information in the Lily Register where they are listed as different. But I have no idea. http://www.lilyregister.com/

The original 'Bright Star' is a clone. Bulbs currently available are a seed grown strain of very similar lilies.
My Casa Blancas are beautiful. I'd try to take a picture but we have a 25 mph wind right now. I'd need a movie camera.
