I ordered a Princess Diana. Got her, planted it fine, she bloomed a bit and then died over the winter.

I reread the warranty and it says 60 days. I called the company and told them that the rose died and they said there was nothing they could do, would I like 20% off on another rose? What are they, nuts?

My DH threw their catalog in the garbage, they are just another garbage plant distributor to us now.

*Roses - Negative Experience (TWO YEAR RETROSPECTIVE)
*Decor/Plant Supplies - Positive Experience

Two years ago, I ordered six (6) tree roses and three (3) bush roses. I have worked my fingers to the bone for two years to keep these roses alive - forget healthy. The roses are all extremely sensitive and vulnerable to black spot, mildew, spider mites, aphids, and every other malady known to mankind. I have treated, fertilized, sprayed, re-treated, and even tried moving the location of the roses! One rose bush is dead. Two rose trees currently contain only one living branch, and will likely die soon - assuming I don't give up on the ugly things and toss them, which I should. Everything else looks terrible, with few living branches. Only the two trees on my front porch might survive another year, and only because I spray them with fungicide/insecticide on an almost daily basis.

Jackson Perkins Roses simply DO NOT THRIVE in GA, and are simply not hardy enough for my hot/humid zone (Atlanta, GA). Although JP does a great job with their catalogs, they do little to inform customers of how hardy their roses are, or in which climates the roses might best thrive. On the other hand, I don't think ANY roses do well in the Southeast... but these roses seem particularly unsuitable.

I do like the JP indoor and outdoor decor items, and have had luck with several nice products.

On the morning of May 8th, I ordered 8 roses in total from this company, even though their website say they deliver within 7 days, that's a lie! When I placed my order, they informed me that my order will arrive by May 22. I called J&P last Friday and asked for UPS tracking #, they can't provide with one, but they said my order is "en route".
I called their Customer Service this morning and told me the same thing, that I should wait till 7 pm tonight as UPS delivers until 7 pm. UPS didn't come.
I spoke to their "supervisor" who couldn't provide me with the tracking number either, and who couldn't care less, tells me to "just refuse the delivery" if I don't want them anymore.
So, my order hasn't been shipped at all but they'd rather lie around it!
Where's the customer service? Who do they think pays for their salary?
I had high hopes when I placed my order based on the positive reviews here, I should have paid attention on the negative reviews as well!
I wasted two weeks waiting for my roses, I could have my garden done by now.

On May 8, the Monday before Mother's Day, I decided to order flowers from Jackson and Perkins. I was prompted to make that decision was because of an e-mail J&P sent me advertising their Mother's Day products. According to that e-mail, and also when I visited their site, all indications were that there was still time to order by Mother's Day, that orders placed by May 9th and they would be delivered in 2-5 business days and they would get there by Mother's Day via express shipping. I ordered my mother-in-law their deluxe carnations basket for $49.50 and paid about $18 for the express shipping. On Mother's Day, the basket had still not arrived.

Yesterday, May 18th, I called customer service and they said I should have noticed when I placed my order that May 18th was the scheduled delivery date, since they clearly stated it when I placed my order (or was it AFTER I placed my order--I didn't see it). Gosh, how long does standard shipping take if express shipping takes ten days, and what does "express shipping" in 2-5 business days mean anyway? Customer Service took no responsibility for the late delivery; they completely exonerated themselves by the fact that they stated it would be May 18 (ten days--eight business days!) before the expressly shipped item would arrive. They said it was MY responsibility to notice the delivery date and be okay with it. Frankly, I didn't know the actual date of Mother's Day, I just knew it was coming up on Sunday and 2-5 days was plenty of time to get it there. Therefore, no sweat to Jackson and Perkins if I didn't realize that May 18th was unacceptable and cancel my order or whatever I should have done. Calling customer service today just made me even more irritated because they were so unaccommodating and not apologetic at ALL. "Ma'am, we stated the date of delivery when you placed your order."
After I hung up from them, my husband talked to his mother, and she said the flowers finally arrived on May 18 (just like they said--ten days after I ordered them to be express shipped), and they were "all dried out." For $70 I should get more than dried out flowers nearly a week after Mother's Day. Jackson and Perkins didn't think so.

I recently received my purchase from Jackson & Perkins, which was recommended to my by my mother. So far the roses are doing o.k., but I feel misled by the 3 expensive containers I bought. The magazine lists them as being "lavender" and the photo shows the pots which are nice with a hint of silver. When I opened the first box I thought, "God these look ugly". They were purple. I know the difference between lavender and purple. These were too bright and look hideous on my walkway. Unfortunately I had already forked over about $50 for each container. I live on a busy street here in New York City and I can just imagine what people are thinking when they see these ugly things. The photo should be taken off the website, or just discontinue this product. I felt like it was false advertisement for their "Lavender country garden" container. This looks like it should be in the garden of a drag queen. I don't think I will be shopping here again, and spread the word

On April 19th, 2006, murano25 added the following:

forgot to mention, I went to Home Depot to find something that would "darken" the containers. I was recommended a clear coat spray to darken the bright purple color. When I got home I sprayed each container and waited 30 min to dry. They look exactly the same as they did before spraying them. So now I waisted more money on these plant containers from hell.

This is the second time that I have ordered a plant from J&P that has proven not to be hardy to my zone. According to their catalog, I'm in zone 7, so I ordered 6 lavenders, supposedly hardy to this zone. 3 Kew Red & 3 Otto Quasi. The Kew Red were so small with tiny root systems, that 2 died shortly after planting, and the 3rd made a valiant effort to live but died after the 1st frost. The Otto Quasi's were bigger and grew well last summer, but appear to be quite dead now. They credited the Kews b/c it was within the 60 days grace period, but the customer service agent just told me that they can't cover plants past 60 days or against chill, but it's been a mild winter.
She offered me 20% if I ordered another Lavender, because they no longer sell the Ottos. I don't think so. I should have paid attention to all the other sources that stated that Spanish Lavenders aren't very hardy.
The same thing happened some years ago when I ordered a Passion Flower which was also reportedly hardy in my zone, but died over the winter. They didn't stand behind that one either, and I later found that particular cultivator listed for Zone 9!
I still have an outstanding order with them for roses, and 3 hardy (to zone 5, ha!) Mimosa Pudica (these are tropical plants according to other sources). But they are inexpensive and interesting, so I am treating them as unusual annuals. And I could not find these roses anywhere else. But I don't trust them to provide accurate information-so buyer beware and definetly look elsewhere for perennials before ordering from J&P.

I just want to say that the C/S rep tried to be helpful.

I would like to begin my reccomendation for this company by stating that I am a very experienced rose fanatic and member of ARS. I maintain a formal rose garden at my home and another at my workplace, both with over 50 specimens, mostly hybrid tea, but with a few other habit types as well. After years of gaining experience, including buying from other famous national rose houses and even "bargain" roses from big box stores, I have come to the conclusion that there is simply no other place to get roses with as much of a consistent quality and value as at J&P. After really hard winters, it is always the J&P roses that survive; and they always seem to be the most resistant to disease and pest outbreaks (like the massive Japanese Beetle attack on the East Coast last year). I order from them every year, and have never, in years of ordering, had a problem with customer service or quality issues. In those rare instances when a rose has not survived, they have replaced it instantly and with no hassle at all. I know I am a rose nut, and it is true that there are few other forms of gardening that are as demanding as a rose garden. Since this is the case, make sure you order from the best, even if it costs a little more - J&P. And no, I don't work for them or know anyone who does (LOL)!

For a couple of years I solely purchased the Jackson & Perkins boxed roses through Costco. However, for the last couple of years I have ordered instead directly from Jackson & Perkins and it has proven to be an even more rewarding experience.

The roses that I have received directly from Jackson & Perkins have each had roots so large that I’m at times hard pressed to find a properly large bucket to fit them into for soaking. These larger rooted canes have for me established even more quickly than their boxed cousins, which I’ve had more than decent success with.

Last year for example, I ordered several bare roots at the start of the season that immediately settled in for a long season of beautiful blooms and dense growth.

I also ordered a set of three Garden Ease Crackling Fires, which arrived later in the season as the catalog had stated they would and also as the catalog stated they arrived with full lush foliage and even covered with lovely flowers.

Later in the season I ordered one of their special offer scented collections of five roses for a rather irresistible price. All again arrived with very developed roots and sturdy canes.

So far this year I have ordered a Social Climber. I placed the order in late December/early January and the rose showed up safely on my doorstep this Saturday – right on schedule for my planting season. Roots and canes all look very good and while obviously it has not yet begun to grow in any significant way, I have no doubt that it will come up as lovely as all the rest of my Jackson & Perkins roses have.

And although I do fully recommend for the reasons stated above ordering directly from Jackson & Perkins when possible, I do also have to admit to losing my conviction this year over a Jackson & Perkins Chicago Peace that I purchased from Costco a couple of weeks ago. While it did in fact have less of a root system than my direct purchases from this company, it is a sturdy, healthy bush that is already showing decent starts of growth.

In short I have had nothing but fully positive experiences with this company and their roses. Their prices are very decent, both for plants and shipping. They’ve always shipped my plants right on schedule and every rose I have received from them has arrived in extraordinary condition and has established quickly.

I ordered 6 bareroot roses, 6 potted roses, and some lilly bulbs in 2004.

I have had a mixed experience with them.

First the bad - The lilly bulbs arrived moldy. I called customer service, and they said they would replace them, but I had to send them back, which was anoying. I have had problems with items from other vendors, and they have not made me send the stuff back. I could understand if I was repeatedly calling them and claiming plants were dead so that they would send me more, but it was my first complaint. The replacements were moldy as well. I gave up and threw them out.

The potted roses were advertised as being ready to plant out at any time. Of the six, only three are left. One of the others held on throuout the season, but didn't make it through the winter.

Another thing I don't like about them is that they do not tell you what zones their roses are ment for. You can find this information elsewhere, such as on helpmefind, but if you are a beginner, as I was at the time, you might not even think to do so, or have any idea where to get this information.

Five of the bareroot roses are alive and doing wonderfully. The sixth one never broke dormancy. I should have called them at the time to request a replacement, but did not due to my experience with the lilly bulbs.

This is my second year in dealing with J and P. My first year I chose not to leave any feedback since I did not know whether the problems with the roses was my fault or the companies. With my newly acquired knowledge of roses, I will venture to guess it was mine.

This year I placed quite a large order with them again. With their beautiful website and catalog, I could not resist. I got my first batch of HEALTHY and I mean HEALTHY large rooted roses that I could barely fit in any tub. By the time I finished soaking them their second day, they were all leafing out. My second, third, fourth batch have come in and Julia Child was a bit troublesome with only two canes (one looked broken). I called and as always got a great CS Rep and she had another Julia sent out. Healthy as can be. My Princess Diana came in on December 27 and as of today she has gorgeous leaves and a bud!

I now await the "test roses" and I am pretty sure that my comments will be the same.

Even last year's Change of Heart trees had died after the warranty, J and P surprised me again with two brand new ones a few weeks ago.

Not available that same season, but said they'd send them next season. While I was on the phone, I mentioned that I saw a "free rose" advertised in a recent catalog, and asked if I could get it seeing as I placed a large order that same season. They said yes, and shipped it quickly.

So the next season I got my roses as promised! Mostly doing well, though those 2 Lavender Lace are a year behind...oh well, they'll catch up. I was very impressed by their customer service and their willingness to honor current specials for orders that were already placed.

I was a bit hesitant never having ordered from them online before.

When the order arrived(left on my door step) I noted that the box was punctured and two broken canes were protruding. I opened the box to determine the amount of damage. Maybe it was just the tips.

Sadly it was the smallest rose in the box which contained 6 bare root rose bushes. It had only 3 small canes to begin with and two of those canes were damaged to within a few inches of the bud union.

I called the company and told of the damage. The lady said "Oh really, I am so sorry." I told her I had digital photos of the damaged canes and the holes in the box. She said that would not be needed. She said that they would send a replacement rose out.

I waited 2 weeks and got a letter. The rose was out of stock. *sad face* they had credited my account the cost of it. I figured Oh well no great loss. Another 2 weeks passed and I came home to a J&P box on the back steps. I opened it and inside it were 4 roses!

I immediately called J&P and asked if there had been a mistake. The lady said no, that it seemed that the original shipment was damaged and that they had promised a replacement and when they discovered the promised rose was out of stock they set out to re-ship what they could of the remaining order in its stead. I asked if they had charged my card again. She assured me they hadn't. I got 4 roses, duplicates of those preiviously shipped. I did not recieve the honey perfume which was the damaged rose in the original order or the Grand Prize, again out of stock.

BUT they sent a duplicate Abraham Darby austin rose(my birthday gift) which was a 16.00 by itself and the 3 others(including the Simply Marvelous I had originally wanted for my mothers day gift!)

I feel they did everything they could to make the damge right, even the customer service lady easing my mind when I asked what they wanted me to do with the damaged rose by telling me to go ahead and plant it and pamper it though they were sending a replacement. the damaged one might survive! I am glad I planted it. I never held out much hope for it. BUT it has produced 2 blooms on the one cane and is leafing out as well as could be expected for one so broken when it arrived.

I WILL ORDER FROM THEM AGAIN!

Placed my order for 6 David Austin Roses...and within one week they arrived. All in very good condition. Very pleased with my order...and will certainly order from them again.

I greatly debated what kind of rating to give J&P until today. Making the story as short as possible, I received an email offer of 4 David Austin Roses at a collection price. I was thrilled with the 4 roses they offered and ordered the same day. When the day passed that they were to arrive, I sent a short email of concern as to their whereabouts... J&P quickly responded and said they were sending another set FedEx! I was thrilled with there service!

When the order arrived three days later, in the box I received only 3 roses, of those, only one was what I had ordered. So again I emailed them for an explaination as to why ONLY 3 and not what I had ordered. Today I got an email saying "We see that the order was entered for
three David Austin roses. Since this order was entered incorrectly we are sending a fourth David Austin rose as a good will gesture..." (Good will gesture?)

I even sent them a copy of the confirmation email (4 David Austin Roses and there names) I recieved FROM them with the order. Now they are saying I made an error?!

Well, in the end I did not receive the roses I had ordered and they can not seem to figure out the error THEY made. Having ordred from J&P for many, many years. I am quite disappointed and will find another supplier for my roses in the future!

Well, in the end I did receive an email through Garden Watchdog from a representative of J&P - Patsy Hawthorne requesting further details having read my post here. On June 24, 2005 I forwarded all of the communications I had had with J&P to Ms. Hawthorne and waited for a reply... and waited and waited. Finally, on July 15th I wrote another note to her stating that I was disappointed she hadn't bothered to respond (3 weeks later)... On the 18th, I received a very apologetic call from Ms. Hawthorne apologizing and stating that a credit had been issued for the original order.

I guess I still ened up ahead, although I still never got the roses I had hoped for, but will be very leary of further dealings with J&P after jumping thorough so many hoops and feeling like they blamed me for their mistakes.

My sister and I have ordered roses from J & P for a few years now. We have had some problems, but J & P has always replaced plants when necessary and customer service has been great.

I purchased a 'Teasing Georgia' rose from Jackson & Perkins last year that didn't survive, so I was expecting a replacement this spring. When the replacement arrived it was not 'Teasing Georgia', but 'Golden Celebration' instead. I already have 'Golden Celebration', so I contacted customer service. The customer service reps were all very friendly and helpful, and they are sending 'Jubilee Celebration' to replace the other rose. When I asked how to get the substitution back to them they wrote, "You are welcome to keep and enjoy the plant ('Golden Celebration') or share it with a friend if you wish."

I've had good experiences with J&P. They have good sales, they stand behind their roses and have a good customer service policy if something goes wrong with the roses you order. I have never gotten a mis-labeled rose from them.
