Because I have been dealing with Park's for years, I decided to report this as only a 'Neutral' vs 'Negative'. On 12-24-06 I order 10 Permanest trays and one package of seeds. The seeds were shipped and arrived within a week and I figured they trays would soon follow since upon checking my order on the website they showed "In Stock and Reserved" On 1-10-07 they still had not showed shipped so I e-mailed regarding the item. I received a quick reply stating "In reviewing our records, I see that the Perma-Nest trays are being processed. They should arrive to you next week." On 1-15-07 I received my credit card bill which showed the total order which had been posted 12-27-06. As of 1-16-07, they still had not arrived or show shipped. Another e-mail and again I received the reply "I am sorry that the Perma-Nest Trays have not shipped. I have requested immediate attention to this problem and expect these items to be shipped tomorrow or Thursday at the latest." They were finally shipped on 1-19-07 and arrived 1-26-07 -- 5 weeks after placing the order. I will say that customer service did get back to me quickly with return e-mails.

Last year (2006) I made my first seed order online. I chose Park Seed because they happened to have the varieties I wanted and looked like an established company.

I was VERY happy with my order. Despite an invasion of bugs, I had a bountiful, beautiful garden. All of the seeds except one kind (Goats Beard) germinated without problem. The plants were healthy and robust.

I also had good experiences with prompt email responses.

Overall, I'd give them the highest recommendation. I'm already studying their website and catalog, trying to hold myself to a reasonable-sized order for this spring. I'll certainly be a repeat buyer.

Update March 2007
I ordered again for this spring, and once again am happy with my order. I got a credit from the Goat's Beard from last year, and ended up taking advantage of one of their special deals when you phone in (Bought a tuber, get six lily bulbs free). I can't help myself.

The tuber and bulbs won't ship until safe for my zone, and two of the seed packets were not available yet, but will ship soon they said. The other seeds are just fine and already starting to germinate.

I should add that I came across a packet of gypsy pepper seeds from last year, planted them, and they're already growing well.

I'm a repeat customer, and still very happy.

I have ordered loads of things from Park's this past year and have had nothing but great service and products from them. Whether bareroot, potted (small or large) or as seeds. I'm kind of perplexed by some of the negative comments below.

In detail:

packaging -- from trade gallon roses to bareroot Clematis, I was always surprised at how well things looked as they arrived this very hot summer (they're in SC, I'm in AL). They use boxes, peanuts, etc., but all pots have faux straw on top and all of my plants arrived with moisture retained (another company farther north shipped rather poorly but, again, we've been very hot and dry this year.) All Park's packages contain detailed information about each plant, too.

speed of service -- I always got things in less than a week (usually 4-5 days from placing online order), and I never asked or paid for rush shipping

success -- whenever I planted small or larger live plants (or bareroot), they have been trotting along just fine even in this dry, hot year. Their bareroot Clematis and bareroot Daylillies have been a particular joy.

I really like Park Seeds and intend to do plenty of business with them in the future. Right now, I keep trying to rein in my potential "for spring shipping" purchases... you know how the winter makes us devour those catalogs!

As I am located in Canada, I've not had the opportunity to order live plants from Park Seed or their affiliated companies. I was surprised to read the comments from some of the posters as I've never had problems germinating Park seeds.

About 2 weeks ago, I received an order from Parks since I took advantage of their fall seed sale. I sowed the seeds which included Eucalyptus, Digitalis, Dianthus, Agastache, Papaver, Platycodon, and Verbascum and all these seed varieties germinated well.

The previous year, I sowed 11 different seed varieties and all of them germinated well. I keep very accurate seed germination records and I would say that Park seed sends out very good product. Their service is quick and they provide excellent customer service.

I first ordered from Park's Landscapes on 7/16/06. I ordered Brugmansias, and a lillies collection. The Brugs arrived very quickly, though much smaller than I expected. The packing method left the plants with few leaves still attached. At this point (Dec) they are still only about a foot tall. I was assured that the lilies would ship shortly. On 8/11 I foolishly ordered again. By now I was concerned at the lack of lilies. When I contacted them, they were sorry, but they had run out. I asked why no-one had notified me. I was told that they weren't set up for that(???). I questioned my new order (seeds, and a Honeysuckle Harlequin, the HS was to be shipped in Nov). I was assured that this would not happen again. Got the seeds. Contacted them last week, since Nov was almost over, and got a reply that he was sorry, but it would not be shipped. I could order again in the spring. I would receive a store credit. As I'd already told them that I would never order from them again, I thought that was a bit nervy. I have requested that I either be issued a check, or the amount creditied to my card, we'll see what happens.

Thought I would respond with my answer to the Park Co. The only thing they accomplished was to lose a year for me with this product (due to our growing season), and obviously I will never be happy with their attemtps to placate me or appear to be a "caring" organization.

Thank you for your consideration. The story is not as you have presented it. I only wished the Canna and the money was not important. You shipped a dried tuber, which was long gone when you shipped it, then requested I wait until it was impossible to replace for that year. I live in Syracuse, NY not Key West, FL, and have a short growing season. You refused to honor your "credit coupon" and refused to replace the canna, requiring me to pay a second time. Then you failed to ship in any reasonable time, and when you finally charged my card, it had been replaced by a newer card with the "swipe pay coding". Unfortunately I must stand by my original assessment; i.e.: you knowingly shipped inferior already dead product, you refused to replace the inferior product in a timely manner, and finally you refused to honor your own issed credit for merchandise. By your note to me, Others might feel that you have gone the extra mile, however, I still consider you to be an inferior merchant who does not live up to any kind of normal good business practice unless pressured and I'm sure that your continued poor customer handling will result in you not continuing as a viable merchant in the future.

Dear Fred Waters,

Re: Park Seed Order 3800018 & 4006624

We have received your posting on Dave's Garden Watchdog. Please accept our apology for your disapppintment with the service we provided and any inconvenience caused.

In your posting, you stated that the Canna you purchased last year did not grow, and you were issued a credit that the company refused to honor when attempting to redeem.

Upon viewing your order last year, the Canna was lost in transit and our company replaced the item. We were informed later that the replacement plant failed to grow. At that time, you were asked to give the plant more time to develop to be sure that it was not just dormant but dead. We usually ask that customers give at least six weeks from planting time to see if the plant is alive. However, you informed us five weeks later that it had not grown or made any changes. You were issued a merchandise credit to use on a future order, following this report.

Our records show that the credit generated from order 3800018 was applied to order 4006624 that was placed in February of this year for the same plant that the merchandise credit was issued against.

Additionally the Charge Card department contacted you late February to inform you of a problem with your charge account. We then received an email from you requesting to have the replacement order cancelled. The order was cancelled as instructed, and you were, again, issued a merchandise credit.

A further review of your records show we canceled the merchandise credit and issued a credit to your Master Card account for $11.95, on 12/19/06..

We have had great customer feedback on the Canna Australia that were cancelled from your order. One of our customers commented that the Canna maintains its beautiful foilage even through the strongest summer sun and the blooms keep on coming. One of our customers also reported that the plant is the star of her garden. We hope you will have an opportunity to order these plants again. They are truly beautiful and will not disappoint you.

Please know that our goal is to provide the best possible products and service. We would never compromise that goal by expecting our customers to settle for anything less. Please accept our apology if anything from your orders was misunderstood.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us (number and address listed below). Thank you for gardening with Wayside! We look forward to your continued support.

November 9th I ordered a lemon tree as a houseplant which was to be a Christmas present for my sister and told her to watch for it. Some days after that I ordered another item for someone else that was sent out very quickly and arrived in good shape. I emailed and asked if the first order had been forgotten. I got a canned answer that the nursery hadn't released it for shipment. I emailed back that I was concerned about the weather as it was now almost Tgiving. The reply was that if the tree wasn't released in time for the part of country where it would be planted, it would be mailed in the spring. Obviously the canned replies weren't about houseplants. I called to cancel. On the phone I got the same irrelevant answer. I told the woman I wanted to register a complaint. I also told the company by email how infuriating their canned replies were. If they didn't have the tree they should have told me instead of stringing me along. Now I'll have to tell my sister what happened to her present. Ergh.

My biggest issue with them is their shipping cost. They currently have a sale and I tried ordering a single pack of seeds for 66 cents, but the shipping cost was $6.95! For one pack of seeds. That is absurd! I can mail seeds for 52 cents, how can they charge those rates? There are currently a few seeds on sale at their site that I would like to try but not at those prices! I'll take my business elsewhere.

I wrote to Parks asking when finally all my order will be shipped and I got an automatic (?) reply, something like " Thank you for your patience". Also, among those plants that were shipped one got separated from its roots (meaning dead), another -- instead of a potted plant I got bare-roots with a mushy decaying leaf and stem. I don`t understand why it takes more than two months to ship the order and how I am supposed to plant something when winter is approaching so quickly.

I just received my 3 Rose Pink Knockout Rose -- Unfortunately instead of the trade gallon, bareroot plant indicated in the catalog I recieved 3 one quart size rooted in pots.. I called the Park Seed (very polite staff) however, no one seems to know about how this happened. But they did seem to know they have no gallon size plants available for shipping. This is troublesome on several levels

1) The fact I ordered back in August when I had several options on who I could obtain gallon size plants from. But, now it is the end of October and will have to wait for Spring.

2) $14.00 for a quart size plant is very expensive. I was very quickly offered a 10% discount -- when I called and questioned the order. That would still be $12.60 each. I have found most places sell the same plant for $7 or $8.00.

3) Customers should always be notified if a substitution nearly half the size as noted in the catalog is going to be shipped.

4) I suspect the company knowingly shipped 100's (or maybe 1000 or more) of these small roses to unsuspecting and unknowing novice gardeners who will accept them without question. I would have to question the business ethics of a company that would do

I had hoped much better given they are part of Wayside Gardens. I plan on calling tomorrow and telling them I will be returning them for a full refund. I really don't want to wait a couple of years for the plants to grow to gallon size.

I do expect they will do the right thing for me -- but have a hard time doing business with a company thay may have questional business ethics.

So as things stand I would have to rate them negative.

I visited Park Seed this past summer (2006) and loved the experience I had. Then a few days later I decided to order some of their plants online and have them shipped. I bought about 4 corkscrew vines and 2 brugmansia. When I received my order there were no leaves on anything. I immediately emailed the company about the condition of my purchase. It took them about a week and a half to respond, which I understand because they are a large company and receive hundreds of emails and phone calls. They told me that replacements would be sent as soon as possible, this was after telling me that they should still pull through, which they didn't. Life went on, I became busy and forgot that a replacement was supposed to be sent. About a month later I emailed them again and they told me they didn't have that plant in stock anymore, but they did credit me the money I spent. I'm giving them a neutral for their lack of communication and the poor shape the plants arrived in. The brugmansia are doing fantastic now. I recommend stopping by their site if ever you are in Greenwood, but would not necessarily recommend buying plants from this company online.

To those of you who missed out on, or passed on the corkscrew vine plant.....that's unfortunate. I ordered one also. When I received it, it was a tiny little shoot, maybe an inch or so long. Like you, I thought it would be a lost cause, but I decided to give it a try anyway. I am so glad I did. It grew very slowly until we got an intense heat wave, high 90's, around the end of July, or beginning of August. The hotter the temperatures got, the more the plant grew. I'm not kidding when I say that I believe it grew 6 inches overnight...EVERY night. I finally bought a trellis that I believed would be way too tall, but I was wrong about that too. It filled the trellis, and since then I have been winding it in and out, keeping it full. I just had to bring it inside for the winter, and I am so delighted that I decided to get it. I so hope that I can keep it going until next spring again. It gets the most beautiful lilac/purple blooms on it, so unusual. I just received an email from Parks saying that they are back in stock. Maybe you should think about ordering once more. If you're lucky enough to get one, I promise that you will be amazed at the growth and won't believe your eyes when you see it bloom. Good luck!

In late July they shipped this annual to Dallas, TX. As an annual, it's major growing and blooming period is already over by that time, and it is definitely apt to burn up in the dry Texas heat that late in the summer.
I refused the package. Parks called to see what the problem was and I relayed all this information to them. What a shock when I got my credit card and discovered they had charged $17 for shipping and return shipping. When I wrote them about the charge, they said, "We're so sorry." That was it. No offer to refund and even split the difference. Parks is NOT the company I used to order from. They are chasing the dollar and no longer care about customer satisfaction. I did warn them that a unhappy customer has a far longer memory than a happy one. But they seem unimpressed. Beware their "greed and indifference."

On 8/10/06 I placed a small order with Park for a fern. After thinking it over I decided that the shipping was just too much for one plant. The plant was $14.95 and shipping was $7.95 for a total of $24.90. I called on 8/17/06 and cancelled the order and was assured my card would be credited. Around 9/8/06 I received a card stating that I had a "merchandise credit" with them. I called and was assured that an error had been made and a full refund would be made to my card. On 9/18/06 this had not happened. I called again and was told that "credits had to be entered manually when they were not busy answering the telephone" and it would happen. Today (9/24/06) - still no credit has posted. I plan to call tomorrow and start going up the line - no more being put off. I have bought seeds from Park for over 30 years, but that relationship will be ended here and now if they do not refund my money tomorrow! What is the matter with those people - do they have so many customers they can afford to drive away people who have stuck with them for so many years? Not getting my money back is bad enough - being given a deceptive sounding story is an insult.

I need to modify the rating. I finally got a Customer Service person (Diane) who bothered to check with their credit department and found out the credit has been issued. It turns out my bank had made an error. It is unfortunate Park people did not look further when I called the first two times and merely told me to keep waiting. So I was blaming them incorrectly. They got some bad publicity by not really bothering to check into my request. Diane was very polite and took the extra step to find out what was going on.

After a month passed, I called again and was assured that a refund check would be mailed. It took more than five months for me to receive my refund!

Ever since that conglomerate, that also owns Wayside Gardens, bought Parks their plant quality and customer service have declined significantly. I've bought from Parks for the past 30 years, but will no longer.

I've been ordering from Parks since the early 80's..Back in 82, I purchased Clivia seed..at the time, you got 5 seeds, for something like 7.99 which was a fair deal for Clivia.
Last winter, I ordered variegated clivia seeds, sowed, but neither sprouted. I thought the reason this happened was because seeds were sent in winter, and perhaps they were chilled during shipping. 2 Seeds for 19.99 plus shipping.
Recently ordered another packet of Variegated Clivia seeds. Again seeds did not germinate. I sow seeds often, 99% germinate..This includes tropicals, C&S's and annuals. I think Parks Clivia seed are old, therefore do not sprout.
I gave them neutral because past orders, other than Clivia, were in good order, but most were non-plant items..Peat pots, pellets, etc.
Their shipping charges are way overpriced..Why would 2 seed cost so much to send? I order seeds from other places, and what I paid for one packet of seed at Parks, I can get 15 packs of seed at less cost, elsewhere.
I used to be a frequent Park's customer, but now have doubts, especially afrter reading posts here on GWD. So, other than non-plant items, I won't be ordering seeds/plants from Parks..

The strawberry bulbs I ordered arrived molded and I had a few others that did not make it but finally after 3 e-mails to the company I finally a month later I received an e-mail stating that they would give me credit for the plants that did not make it. I noticed my card was charged on 6/28/06. On 7/6/2006 I checked my order status online and it said "order processed". I hadn't received the order so I called their customer service and got someone who sounded like they were brain dead. She told me the order would ship on 7/10/06 because they were closed for 4th of July week. I called back and also emailed them on 7/12/06 and was told the order would ship sometime within the next 5 days or so. I told them to cancel my order and credit my card. I told the customer service rep that by the time I would receive the order, Summer would be almost over. She apologized and said my card would be credited. I checked my bank account statement today 8/5/2006 and realized they still had not credited my account. I again called their customer service line only to be told that they had changed their refund policy and that now they were only issuing merchandise credit. I told the lady no way and insisted my card be credited, especially since I had already been promised that it would be. I asked her when I would receive a credit and she told me that it would be on my next month's statement. So basically I'm out the money until someone does something to credit my account. I think this company acted unethically by charging my card since they weren't planning to ship for at least another month and now the bad ethics continue. I told the customer service rep...THIS IS MY FIRST AND LAST ORDER WITH YOUR COMPANY. Today I reported them to the Better Business Bureau and copied them on the later I sent to the BBB.Thankfully, I'm only out about $9.00 for this order. I feel sorry for the people who spend lots of money only to be screwed over like I was.

The colors and health of the plants are fantastic and what a fragrance. Same for most of the other seeds I've ordered from them. With some of the other company's I ordered from this year, it was hit or miss. Except for one which I will comment on in their space. I might order some plants from them for fall, not sure yet. Seeds are wonderful though.

Usually my petunias are chewed up by catepillars and beetles but not these. I don't know why but no bugs touched them and I got to enjoy their gorgeous color all summer and fall. As a matter of fact, I bought a different kind of petunia from a local company and those were destroyed at the same time the others were perfect. Every single seed packet I bought from them produced great amounts of blooms and colors and I bought a lot! So I already ordered and got seeds from them for next year and will probably order more. A great turnout for the price which to me is a good value.

I had not been able to fine the plant where I live so I ordered 9. I waited about 2 weeks and then wrote an email to the company asking when the plants would be sent out. I received a response within 3 business days, thanking me for my order and advising that there had been a delay (with an apology) but the plants would be going out the beginning of "next week."

Well...I began to worry....thinking that the plants will never grow here on Long Island if they ever arrived. Lot's of negative thinking. What a waste of my mental energy! The plants arrived as promised, PERFECTLY PACKED and all alive and doing well. They're in the garden and growing FAST.

I was skeptical...and the reason being that I had a disappointing experience with Wayside several years ago. However I was willing to give Parks a try because the price was too good to pass up.

I will definately order the corkscrew vine from them again next year.

When I opened the box I found 5 twigs (brugmansia) and all the dropped leaves were inside the box with the peanuts. The vines still had leaves but they are damaged. I doubt any of these plants will make it. This sale didn't turn out to be a very good deal. Ok... I first posted a big red NEGATIVE about eBayer Perfect Plant - AKA PARKS SEEDS. However, I have to be fair in saying once I finally got ahold of them they bent over backwards to fix the mess of my order.

They did not have the one plant I purchased from their eBay auction, but they asked me to please look over their auctions and pick any plant I wanted regardless of price. I did so...and they sent me a very healthy large Endless Summer Hydrangea.

My Janice Brown daylily turned to mush upon planting, and I just got notice that they have shipped me out another one.

So... I didn't appreciate Parks operating under a code name, but all in all (after some real frustration) they made everything right with me.

I was discussing my situation with a good friend who's a MAJOR gardener (flower and veggie) and he told me a majority of his veggie garden seeds have come from Parks for years with no problem.

Placed an order with Parks on June 29 and I still have not heard from them. The item I needed (Algoflash fertilizer) is only available through a handful of internet sites and Parks (having a 71% positive feedback) seemed to be my best bet. Besides, I wasn't buying plant material.

I phoned my order in so as ensure the item was in stock for shipment. After being assured the items were in stock, I placed the order. After one week and no shipping confirmation, I phoned the company. At that time, I was informed that although my items were available to be shipped, there was no-one there to ship them---the shipping department is closed for vacation.

Frustrated (what was the point in confirming availability for me if they knew there would be no-one there to ship it---and just neglected to tell me that part?), I e-mailed customer service on July 6. Haven't heard from them either---they must be on vacation as well.

I tried to just accept the fact that sometimes orders get screwed up---it's a fact of life. With the passing of time, my frustration subsided---until I happened to be doing some on-line banking and found that Parks had billed my credit card on July 3!

Even IF they get my order out on Monday,July 10th, that still makes 12 days plus however many days for UPS ground (5-8?) till I get the items I wanted immediately?

This is no way to run an airline---or a nursery that hopes for repeat customers!

It gets bettter---when I finally heard from customer service, they told me that despite prior assurances that the items I ordered were both in stock---and despite having billed my credit card for both---one week prior to actually shipping anything---in truth, only one of my items were in stock. For the "inconvenience", Parks has "graciously" offered to not charge me for shipping and will expedite shipping on my second item when it arrives.

Have you ever phoned a store to see if they had something in stock and when told "yes", you got right in your car and drove down there---only to discover the item actually wasn't in stock? Well, imagine this store actually went ahead and billed your credit card for the item---despite it not being there. That's what Parks just did to me.

Although the second half of my order is still not available for shipping (it's due in), I'm changing my rating to a "neutral".

I have just received the most thoughtful apology/explanation I have ever received from any company---ever. This particular company rep who e-mailed me performed damage control the way it should be done---it was an absolute first class job, extremely professional.

Things went wrong with my order on a couple of different levels. Customer service to date has been adequate, at best. Then, this company rep became involved and everything immediately changed for the better. Yes, an adjustment was made to my bill, but that really didn't matter to me. It was the way she handled my problem that mattered.

I've chided the company in a public forum and now I'd like to complement them, in the same public forum, for having the good sense to have this individual on the payroll and allowing her to do her job the way it should be done!
