First it seems that recently and more often Parks Seed Company seperates your orders and ships at their convenience. You are of course pre-billed the full amount while you wait for the remainder of your order.
Secondly and more destressing is that Park Seed is now sneaking in a hidden $2.00 surcharge to help defray the cost increases of natural gas used to heat their greenhouses. This surcharge is added into all Park Seed orders with no explanation and is unethical in my opinion. Why not add shipping and expenses to the basic costs of the goods for sale? They round off the prices anyway, and you can bet to their benefit.

I have been a customer for several years and have always been very happy with the products and customer service, until this year. In mid March I ordered seeds and several biodomes (some were for a gift) I received the seeds quickly but have been unable to start them as the biodomes and the refill sponges have yet to be sent. I was not told they were backorded until after I received the last of my seeds. The shipping invoice only said backordered with no date given. I called the company and was told that I would receive it by the middle of next week. I called a couple of days later and was told it would not be shipped until the middle to end of next week. The company has done a very poor job of keeping me informed about the status of my order. When I ordered everything was listed as "ships now." If I had known that there was a long wait I would have already started my seed with an alternate starting kit. Order number 4663085.

My family used Park Seed to send sixteen packets of seed to my Grandpa, who is an avid gardener. He was delighted to get them within two days! Because of low germination, they'd also sent extra seeds for a seedless hybrid watermelon. He also commented positively on the gold foil seed packets, which made a good impression on him. He's completely pleased with the experience and the family plans on using Park Seed more in the future.

My wife ordered a bio dome kit from Park Seed in mid March as a birthday gift for me. I was worried that I was ordering too late to use it this season, but figured if it was in stock and shipped immediately as her order confirmation stated then I would be ok. After waiting a couple weeks and calling she was told that it was backordered and might ship in early April. Here we are in the second week of April and we still have not heard anything from Park. It looks like I will have to wait until next year to use my gift. This is our first time ordering anything from Park Seed, and so far it has not been a good experience. I wish they would have just been honest about when the order would ship. If they would have just shipped the seeds that come with the kit then I could have bought a starter locally and would have plants by now. I am very disappointed with this experience. I had hoped that I found a good company to do business with. So far it doesn't look good.

I usually don't order from companies that have anything other than a great rating on GW but I took a chance on Park despite the negative comments because - it was just some seeds. That was all I ordered, no Bio-Dome or other hard goods, or plants, or anything else that people seemed to have problems with, just seeds. And they arrived quick. Packaging was great.

Those that I have started have sprouted and I've already transplanted into larger pots. There was only one type of plant that did not have a good germination rate and when I looked the plant up on other websites to research their care, it was noted that the seeds have a notoriously poor germination rate. So that can't be Park's fault.

So if you need seeds that you haven't found elsewhere, as I did, I would say it's worth it to place the order with Park.

It was processed as 3 separate orders and customer service insisted I placed three orders. But everything except the Park's starts refills arrived quickly. They are supposed to be shipped later. I just love the Sponges and the Starts although the Starts are very tiny. Still my seeds started germinating in two days. I will definitely order from them again. Hopefully they won't get amnesia on my Start's refills.

I hope this clears up any confusion, and again thank you for your kind words.

On March 2, 2007, I ordered seeds, biodome, heating mat, extra biodome refill sponges under the promise that Biodome will be shipped in 2 - 3 weeks while the others will be shipped right away. Today, April 2, exactly a month later, I called Park Seed because Biodome never arrived, to my dismay, I was told that Biodomes are in back order and it will not be shipped until the end of April.

When I spoke with Veronica Jackson, she told me that I can return seeds and others, but I have to pay for the return shipping and restocking fee fee -- so wonderful of her??? . When I told her that it is Park Seed who did not keep the promise and therefore they should pay for the return shipping, but she thinks her company policy is right. Obviously she would like to be treated that way as a consumer. Hopefully she will get treated that way!

Although I feel no use in writing to the company president, I am compelled to write to him to let him know his business practices are totally unethical and inappropriate. I just wasted money and will not buy anything from them again.

I have ordered from Park every year for over 20 years. I am very puzzled by all the bad experiences people are having. I have never had trouble with their seeds, except one year they arrived about a month after everyone else's. Only one year. I order in January, so no big deal. I also order their lovely glads, they have a ruffled peach colored one that is the most beautiful I have seen, even better than the pricey ones from the specialists. I used to order fall bulbs, and they were very high quality, but the price was a little too high, so I get them elsewhere. Not much experience with their plants, but I am clear across the country so prefer to order from local companies. Anyway, I am a very experienced grower, and plant tons of seeds every year, so I know what I am talking about. I like Park, and they have some wonderful things no one else offers. Pictures and specific directions would be nice on the packages, but their foil packs keep the seeds viable if you don't get around to planting them the same year. Plus, it's nice they are reading the comments.

I placed my first-ever plant mail-order this year, for plants. I crossed my fingers, having never ordered plants from a catalog before. The plants arrived earlier than promised and in perfect condition. They were enclosed and well-supported in a large cardboard box. The leaves were green, and two of the plants even had some small blooms. The plants were in 3.5" pots and stood at least 8" tall and about 6" wide; I don't know if this is considered good-sized or not, but we were pleased. They were completely free of pests and disease. They have been in the ground for 2 weeks now and are showing new growth and look GREAT. The prices may be a little higher than at the nursery but the convenience can't be beat especially considering the quality of the product and service I recieved. Job well done! I will be ordering from them again in the fall.

I do a lot of online shopping. I have never left a negative review before now. My experience with Park has left me certain that I will not order from them again. In late January I ordered the "Add the Right Light Collection", a group of items consisting of trays, the Bio-Domes, a heat mat with thermostat, and grow light. Everything I needed for my first attempt at starting my own tomato plants. The website stated that this was "in stock" and "ships now". This has not been the case.

I have made a total of 4 phone calls to Park, questioning the status of my order. I received the grow light a few weeks after placing the order; just last week I received 2 plastic trays with plastic covers. In the meantime, I purchased seed starting trays at Walmart and set up the grow light and started my seeds. I have still not received the heat mat, thermostat, Bio-Domes, or fertilizer that is also part of the kit. As I said before, I have made calls and have been told each time, beginning in February, that they should be shipped out "in the next week or so."

I spoke with Veronica at Park this morning, after requesting from a customer service representative to speak with a supervisor, and she was very nice and apologetic about the situation. She explained that the response was overwelming and the items in question were on backorder. I do understand about large responses and running out of supplies. My primary reason for concern, and why I won't order from Park again, is that when you place your order, even if it says "in stock", and "ships now", that may or may not be true. Just this morning, before calling Park, I checked the website for the item "Add the Right Light Collection", and it still says "ships now". I think this is irresponsible and not in the customer's best interest; most other companies which I buy from online can let you know when you order something if they have it, or if it is backordered. Then it is my choice to place the order and wait, or choose something else.

I just wanted to warn others that the website is not entirely forthcoming about the status of the items you might be ordering.

On April 7th, 2007, dillbuch added the following:

I did finally receive the remainder of my items on March 31, fully 2 months later. Far too late to be of use this year, but I will at least have them for next season.

On Mar 19, 2007, khadie Montgomery Village, MD (Zone 7a) wrote:

How unhappy am I? I can barely count the ways... Both seeds and some hard goods I ordered were completely unsatisfactory or ridiculously defective.

But first, let's talk about shipping and handling. I took advantage of an annual sale... I worked very very hard on my order because, like any gardening addict, I wanted more than I could afford in terms of money and time and garden space even... I edited my order down to the essentials. I was shocked when I discovered that their shipping and handling charges were based on the Full Price of the item. Never before have I encountered anything like this and 90% of my shopping, even groceries, is in done on the web.

Now for the seeds...so far, I've tried to start two types of pepper and an eggplant. I started 12 of each. NOT a single seed has germinated... I started seeds from various other sources, including some peppers and eggplant that were 5 years old from Pinetree Garden Seeds and I had nice germination rates, so it's not me.

An annoying problem with the Heirloom Tomato collection... unless it's a salad mix, most garden companies mark such collections so a person can distinguish between types, but these were just all mixed up in the packet. I can't grow the entire packet, should it even sprout... I'm stymied... I wanted a couple of each type, but how can I know?

Next, let's talk about the plant light. I ordered the basic model which was about $45... it turns out to be the cheapest shop light in the world--enamel chipped off on the reflector (is it even new?), hanging chains with different size links, ie, impossible to hang straight, no place to really secure the chains... Perhaps its biggest flaw is--the fixture is SO CHEAP it will NOT HOLD the bulbs in place... When I called about this, their only solution was that I should send it back... you mean after I already got hosed on the S&H, I should spend even more money, ie, spend about $15 sending back something worth $15 that I already paid appx. $50 dollars for??? Gee, thanks!

Had I wanted to cobble together my own light at Home Depot, I would have... but I thought I was getting something finished and operational--silly me.

Sprouter: they pushed this so hard in the catalog so I had to give it a try. It consists of two pieces of flimsy plastic, and their instructions were dead wrong so I wasted an overpriced packet of their mung beans trying to sprout them...one washing and the clear tray was already cloudy and scratchy...so sanitary! Also, they tell you to put the seeds in light and let them green up... the most nutrition phase of a sprout's life is before it greens...

Seed starting modules: 3 basic styrofoam blocks with holes... three cheap plastic trays. I ordered two sets, one set had crushed trays...it was not made clear that these plugs are really too small to start anything but the tiniest of seeds..

I have this horrible feeling I will have to add to my litany of woes as I start more seeds...

On March 20th, 2007, khadie added the following:

After spending hours trying to hang the cheap shop light, I discovered that only one of the bulbs lit up. one set of the sockets is broken and the bulb will not light.

The customer service rep indicated that it was not possible to track the order (Really? They charge top dollar for shipping and cannot track orders?), and that I should wait another week or two to see if it showed up.

On 3/15 I contacted them again, this time by email. They responded quickly and said they would ship my BioDome and refills immediately. The refills arrived within a week, but no BioDome, and of course I don’t need any refills if I don’t have the basic kit. The website indicated that the BioDome still has not shipped. I emailed again. This time the reply was “Our records indicate that there have been some delays in receiving some components of the Bio Dome System. We hope to be able to complete your order shortly.” So 5 weeks after ordering and paying for the goods, I still do not have them, have no idea when I will get them. We ordered both seeds and plants (blueberries and raspberries). The seeds arrived in two separate shipments in a timely manner, with bonus seeds included. As I haven't sown them, I don't know how the germination rate will be.

I just received the plants today and was very pleasantly surprised. The blueberries weren't cheap, and they were just beautiful. They were just starting to bud out (appropriate for planting here) and looked extremely healthy. The raspberries are still dormant but look just fine.

Unless I have problems with the seeds or the raspberries don't leaf out, I give my experience a thumbs up!

Jeanne

My Passion is gardening, and I find every order with Park Seed to be a pleasant experience. My seeds have all sprouted easily with the help of the Biodome. It's the easiest way I have found to start seeds indoors. My fall plant order arrived in a timely manner and all the plants were great!

I have to say, previous years, things weren't so good, but it seems there's much better quality control and orders are arriving on time! Whatever they are doing now is working!

I live in Greenwood and have purchased from Park's on several occassions, either from the Garden Center on site or by phone. Park's is prompt in replacing items, but they are hesitant to issue refunds and sometimes merchandise credits, but from speaking with some of the CS reps I know that this is because of those customers who call year after year requesting refunds/credits for merchandise they claim didn't survive. Some up to FIVE YEARS after the purchase. In the past, Park's/Wayside replaced these items no questions asked, but have recently had to change their gaurantee and refund policy. They simply ask that you let them know that your seeds failed to germinate as soon as you reaize they are not germinating which should be no more than 10 or 12 weeks; and that you let them know that your plant died as soon as you realize the plant isn't "healthy looking" or that it was dead when it came. You can't expect a company to replace 2 year old plants that could have died for any number of reasons since you received them. Also, the company can tell you if the plant is expected to bloom the first year. So, if it isn't suppose to bloom the first year, it won't and it's not their fault; it's nature.

I made a sizable investment back in the 80s in Parks seed block starters which
came the first time with the cylinders, but after that needed to be purchased yearly. No problem. Year after year I ordered the replacement cylinders, happy, very happy with the results, recommended to everyone on my garden
lists to use them. Them Parks came out with thier bio dome starter kits and since then the replacement cylinders for the 18 hole blocks began to have a
control problem - odd sized, falling apart, etc. Two or three years ago they had to replace the order the cylinders were so bad. Still, I had to use them as I have
around 50 of the 18 hole blocks and they are unusable without the replacement cylinders.
This year I called to reorder in late Jan. When my order arrived there were no replacment seed cylinders. I called and was told they were on back order and would ship around 2-19. I told PS that I needed them by the 4th weeks of Feb. in order to start my seeds in the right moon phase. PS said they would ship them out 2 day FedEx. I asked if someone would find out what the on going problem has been for several years with these replacement cylinders and was told someone would call me back (Of course they never did).
2-19 I called PS was told they cylinders were in and would be shipped. Four
days later they had not arrived. I called and was told they were on back order. I called back and inquired about the replacment cylinders for all of the
bio dome seed starter kits and, as I suspected, all the sponge cylinders for
these more expensive seed starters were in stock.
It does not take a rocket scientist to know the same company supplying PS with the sponges for the bio dome kits also makes/made the replacment cylinders for the original blocks. The 2007 catalog offered both the 18 hole blocks and needed replacment cylinders, but this company did not deliver.
Additionally, PS charged my credit card for the replacment cylinders before
shipping them.
I spent a lot of time the past two weeks on the phone with PS and was hung up on -twice - when I inquired about the sponge cylinders for the bio dome kits. I ws lied to on the 19 when told they cylinders were in and would be shipped out to me 2 day FedEx or UPS.
Today I decided to go to the PS site and type in my order number to see what came up regarding item 9660, which is the replacement cylinders I have to have to start my seeds.
Here is what came up for item - "line was cancelled"

I used to have a high regard for PS.
NO LONGER.
Next year I'll just buy the starter kits Wal-Mart offers, because Parks has proved to be untrustworthy. They are only interested in promoting their higher dollar bio-dome kits and to hell with their older customers who invested years ago with them when they came out with the original seed starter blocks. Btw, Parks assured me all those years back that they would have the replacement cylinders in the future. I'd never have invested in them if I'd known they would cancel the line eventually. It also makes no sense as the same sponge cylinders used in the open 18-hole blocks are made from the same gel and peat as the bi-dome cylinders - just the wrong size.

I'm telling everyone on all my garden discussion lists about what happened and to warn others that in 2007 PS advertiszed falsely in thier catalog, hung up on me when I inquired about the status of the bio-dome sponges, and how they have a policy of charging to credit cards before shipping. PS must be in financial trouble to be doing what they are doing.
Beware.

I’ve looked into the coating you mention in your post. This coating is an inert polymer; by applying this to your seed we receive the following benefits.

1) This allows the seed to flow better through an automatic sowing machine.
2) And allows the seed to show up better against the media.

I hope this clears up the confusion. If you have any more questions please let me know.

I just recently place my first online order for seeds. I ordered Salvia Flare. I needed about 6-8 seeds to sprout for my garden this year. Therefore I planted 18 a week ago. As of today ALL 18 have sprouted. I am very pleased with the quality of there seeds. I can't wait to plant the Magellan Coral zinnia and Janie Mix marigolds I also ordered from them. I was also pleased, because the shipping cost me less than the gas it would have taken for me to track down these three specific varieties. The seeds were delivered in a timely manner. I would not hesitate to order from them again.

I just started my Zinnia and Marigolds and again the success rate of germination is amazing. I purchased a lot of seeds at Walmart this year, but the success rate has been about 50/50. So far my experience with Park Seed is outstanding. I have never ordered seeds before, because I always found it easier to pick them up at a store. Not anymore. It may cost a few cents more to order them online, but there is a dramatic improvement in the quality of seed. I would highly recommend their seeds.

Ordered seeds and, I thought, bare roots. The seeds arrived in fine shape, but the roots are another matter. Three of the bare roots are plants in pots (I went back to the website and checked that I received the correct plants and that they are indeed listed as bare roots; yes, they are the plants I ordered and, yes, they are listed as bare root). The bare roots that I ordered arrived wrapped as bare roots. When I opened them the had more green growth than roots, and everything was very badly tangled together. I had to half bury the green growth to get the roots adequately covered. I've never seen such a tangled mess. Yes, I know I could pack it all up again and request a refund, but time is money, too, so next time I'll shop elsewhere (I bought a much nicer version of one of these bare root plants at Lowe's, it's sort of sad to say).

I couldn't be more happy about my recent order from the Park Seed Catalog! When the second part of my order for 4' full-spectrum flourescent bulbs arrived, I could hear broken glass. I did not open the package and immediately e-mailed the company, asking how to resolve the problem. They responded the next day, telling me not to return the package, and that a replacement shipment would be on the way within 7-10 days. The following day I received confirmation that the shipment was on its way, and it arrived in good shape 7 days later! I definitely will continue ordering from this company and will recommend it to my gardening friends.

I'll never do business with this company again. Out of twenty plants ordered over a six month period, almost half died within two weeks (or arrived dead); plants from the other three internet companies I deal with have had a nearly 100% success rate). The company's new unfriendly replacement policy (YOU pay the postage for replacements) is hardly a guarantee at all.

I ordered several ferns; one arrived dead. I PAID for a replacement, and received an empty pot of dirt -- no fern, not even a root system. I called and complained; they said they would send another, but I never received it.

On a later occasion, I ordered a basil from Wayside Gardens. It arrived healthy-looking, but died within a week. They sent a replacement (that division's replacement policy is a bit friendlier) which arrived dead -- I planted it but it never showed a sign of life.

I've given up. My experiences with Paradise Gardens, Greenwood, Brent & Becky's Bulb's, and a few others have always been excellent, but not so with Park's and Wayside. I cannot recommend them.
