Comments regarding High Country Gardens

I ordered four agastache plants early this month. I received the order in less than a week after I placed it.
I am very pleased with the plants They got here in wonderful condition. I would recommend High Country Gardens to anyone. They have quality plants packaged well
and shipped at a very reasonable price

I just received my first order from HCG last week. The plants seem to be healthy, and were well packed. I'm on the steamy east coast, so we'll see how my selections fare here. I did choose selections said to need/tolerate more water, but of course any long term failures will be my fault, not theirs. Anyway, based on the quality of this initial order, I would order from them again.

Excellent, reasonably priced, mail-order source for the arid west. I have also been able to find some true gems that have flourished in the maritime northwest. Plants are small, but health and vigor have always been exceptional.

Received my second order from this company and I am very pleased with the quality of plants.They take off fast and Dave is good at educating us Eastern gardeners on which varities will fare well here.The plants I ordered last spring are now well established.Customer service was quick on answering my emails wih culture questions and even sent my a link to an article on my question.Great source for hummingbird plants.Tamarava

I placed a big order this winter and had them shipped for late feb/early march. Unfortunately a big snowstorm hit late for us here in sc and the plants were stuck with ups. HCG called us and said they were worried about our plants since they saw our snow on the weather and told us if we lost any plants to call them and they'd replace whatever died. Well, we got them 2 days later, the snow was gone and the weather was in the high 60's (usual for this area). Everything looked fine except for one salvia. We put it in a southern window and kept it moist and it's budding back out again. So far, none lost and about half of them are planted in the ground and showing growth already. VERY NICE

We have shopped with HCG a lot because they have a very good selection of salvias and penstemons. We will continue to shop with them in the future for any type of xeriscape plant for our southern 'dry' garden. On a side note, all their 'xeri' plants native to the west, have done well in our sc garden with good soil modification.

Just received my first order from High Country Gardens. All plants look great: each pack in its own little pot, covered with a baggie and well-secured in the box. Very satisfied!

I've ordered from HCG in the past, and the plants were small, but viable. Those plants that didn't survive failed because either I didn't give them enough water (a definite possibility in Northern Nevada) or because I left them on the patio (even with watering) for several weeks before getting around to planting them. The survivors were all planted promptly, watered as needed, and planted in well-drained soil.

Of course I'd like larger plants for the price, but I'd also like someone to give me all the plants I crave at no charge. My only complaint about HCG is that they seem to think I'm in a chilly Zone 5, when I'm actually in Zone 7, and the switch from winter cold to blasting summer heat is nearly overnight. I have a very small window of opportunity for successful planting, and it's difficult to persuade some vendors (HCG included) to send me my plants when I want to plant them. I did, however, prevail with HCG and that's to their credit.

I've placed many orders with this company and have almost always been pleased with the quality of the plants. In the few instances when I wasn't pleased they have sent replacement plants and the service has been excellent. I will continue to do business with them and can recommend them without reservation.

My experience with High Country Gardens has been amazingly good. To start with, their catalog is excellent. I placed an order with them, and then I had a question. They answered their e-mail promptly, and even called me to talk to me personally. The order was shipped FedEx even though I'd only paid for UPS.

The plants arrived on time and they were packaged so well - each in its own little pot which slotted into a cut-out in the box. Each plant was also inside a plastic bag, which kept in the moisture. The plants each had a regular-sized plastic tag that no only gave the plant name but the eventual spread and height.

The plants all seem very healthy. They are all well-rooted, but not rootbound.

It's obvious these people care about customer service AND their plants - which is rare in the business. I will definitely order from them again.

Pre-delivery e-mail communication was excellent regarding possible high temperatures the week of delivery (97 degrees the day of the message, but as the forcast was for 65 degrees the week of delivery, I took a chance). They arrived on a 65 degree day, so all is well.

The plants were very well packed. A bit small, but I buy mail-order plants a LOT, and they're comparable to most companies. VERY health root systems, so I'm sure they'll do fine.

I placed an large order in early Spring. The plants arrived very healthy and I was impressed by how well they were packaged. I did subsequently find many of the same plants at my local nursery that were much larger and less expensive than the ones I received but, I would definately consider going thru HCG again for varieties I wasn't able to get locally.

Ordered from HCG first time this spring. Great catalog, good selection of native plants. Was notified by email and mail of plant arrival---company communication system seems really good. Plants arrived on time and in good shape (small, but true to size specified in catalog). Customer service responded promptly to feedback. It's been 3 weeks, and some of the perennials are already blooming. I will definitely order from HCG again.

I live at a high elevation and the local nurseries don't always carry the selection I've found in the High Country Gardens catalog.

I have ordered perennials from HCG both this spring and last. I was so impressed with my first order--the plants arrived exactly when promised and in perfect condition--I ordered from them again this spring. The perennials I ordered from them last year were smallish when they arrived but took off like rockets and astonished me with their vigor and rapid growth. I have good luck with perennials in general but never as good as with these! I expect the same from this year's aquisitions. Living in semi-arid Denver, I really appreciate the great care they put into their plant selection as well as the efforts they put into educating about xeriscaping on their website and in their catalog. A great company with great plants and great service!

This is a great company! I have ordered from them for 8 years and have never had a disapointment. The plants are packed perfectly-well rooted and take right off. They let you pick the weekend they will arrive, so you are ready for them when they come. They are a godsend for those of us who live in the Great Plains, where it is hot, dry, and windy. I've ordered from dozens of catalogs, and High Country Gardens is #1 on the list.

I just became aquainted with this nursery last spring. I loved their catalog and I was intrigued by some of their unusual varieties. I placed a small trial order and was very pleased with the size and quality of the plants and careful packaging. I will definitely be ordering from them in Spring 2003.

Thumbs up to High Country Gardens! I've ordered from them several times and have never been disappointed. They carry a wide-range of xeric plants that I can't find locally - I'm spreading their beautiful South African delosperma throughout Boulder County! The people who take the phone orders are very careful to assess the likelihood of success I will have with a plant in my area/zone and have given me some excellent gardening advice. I don't think I've had a single plant they've send me fail and, given that I'm a rather negligent gardener, this tells me that the plants are packed/mailed carefully and are extremely hardy to begin with.

I order from this company every year and my plants always arrive on time, securely packed, and they're healthy, good-sized plants with well-developed roots. High Country Gardens is a godsend for those of us gardening in the southwest, as they're constantly introducing new plants adapted to our climate. I also visit their display gardens each year, as I'm fortunate enough to live within driving distance. Also, all bulbs I've purchased from HCG have performed well. I've tried the soil improvements and garden products recommended in the catalog and have been amazed at how well they work. Customer service is outstanding!

All but one plant arrived in extremely healthy condition. I sent an e-mail to the comapany on Saturday regarding a plant that died. I received a call early Monday morning with appologies and confirmation that my credit card would be credited.

The other plants are thriving in my garden.

I have ordered from this company several times, and I can honestly say it is one of the best experiences I have ever had with a mail order. The plants arrived when it was time to plant them in my zone, they were in beautiful condition and perfectly packed. I have their site in my favorites, because they definately are one of my favorites!

I've gotten about two hundred plants from this company over the past year and a half and I couldn't be happier. All but one of them took off and grew beautifully, and the one that didn't, they replaced for free - and they sent it next-day mail! (And the replacement plant is doing beautifully, too.) Great selection and the phone operators really know the plants. The catalog is clear and helpful. I will definitely keep buying from them.

I regularly order from the High Country Gardens catalog. I've also shopped in their retail store here in NM and it's excellent! All shrubs, perennials and bulbs I've purchased are performing very well. Catalog orders arrive complete and on time. The staff is knowledgeable and professional whenever I have plant questions. I highly recommend HCG as a reputable source of top quality plants and bulbs.

High Country is probably one of the best garden catalog companies when it comes to Customer Service. I give it a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10! The varieties they offer are wonderful. The employees are extremely knowledgeable. I got the impression that some might actually have degrees in Agriculture or Horticulture. They were very helpful in answering my questions. The plants we ordered last year (2001) arrived in very healthy condition; they were packaged beautifully. They survived the long trip to Chicago, Illinois (from Santa Fe, NM). The plants survived the cold winter (although Winter 2001 was rather mild in Chicago), and they are starting to peek through the ground. I highly recommend High Country, because of the wide selection and variety they offer, they offer a great guarantee, and its Customer Service is outstanding.

I just last week received my first order from High Country Gardens and am very pleased. I ordered 6 plants, all different, and they arrived exactly when I was told they would, and looking healthy and happy. I have planted them all and now a week later they all look to be in very good shape. The prices this company charges seem a little high to me, but perhaps that's the price you pay to get good plants that will thrive. I will definitely order from them again.

I have ordered plants from HCG for several years. They have always arrived in good condition, and grew well. The catalog is very helpful to indicate the culture, size, length of bloom etc.

This company, and it's owner David Salman work hard to bring plants of great xeriscape value to the west. They are a part of the Plant Select program between the Denver Botanical Gardens, and Colorado State University. This program rates plants for superior garden performance in the Rocky Mtns. and Great Plains states. Each plant comes to your home in great shape, and grows great! I am a Utah Nursery and Landscape Professional, and I can attest to the greatness of this company's integrity, and the excellence of these plants. They are ANYTHING but boring! Check them out!

This is a great Xeriscape Company. Many wonderful plants and they are shipped very quickly and in great shape. All colored pictures of the plants and also tells you which plants the hummingbirds and butterflies like and also deer resistant plants. This company gets an A plus from me.

I purchased more than 100 bulbs from this company and they were shipped very quickly and the bulbs were in excellent condition. I will definately buy from them again.

I ordered from this company last spring and the shipment arrived just when they said it would. Only one plant, a Reiter Thyme, failed to thrive. I called the company, and they very cheerfully arranged to ship me a replacement in the fall. (The time for Spring shipping was over.) The replacement arrived and has come back this spring, despite the strong winter we had here in Eastern Washington. Everything else seems to be recovering as well, although my Agastaches are always a little slow to come out.

I have ordered from them two years running now. It is one of the only catalogs, that I am aware of, that offers winter/cold hardy cacti. And the cacti do hold. I live in North Eastern Pennsylvania, and the cacti I have ordered are growing, and growing. They also have many rare, or unusual perennials most other catalogs do not have.

Have ordered twice from them. The first time, I ordered from a sale listing at the end of the summer. I don't recommend doing that; over half the plants I received were half dead from being in those tiny little pots all season, and were also very dry. I only have three survivors from an order of 20 plants, and as they were from a clearance catalog, no refund. The second time I ordered, I had much better luck, but then I ordered from the regular spring catalog. Plants were healthy, but the person who mentioned rubber bands and baggies was right; some of the stems were broken from the bands, and I actually broke a couple of stems myself getting those bands off. However, the broken ones survived and are doing pretty well. Their prices are high compared to other places, but I feel that I'm paying for customer service, too. Theirs is excellent! Advice is freely given over the phone, and I have yet to speak with anyone who could not answer any weird question I threw at them.Also on the plus side, visit their nursery in Santa Fe. It's called Santa Fe Gardens, and it's the best nursery I think I have EVER been to! I wanted to buy so many things, but I had to truck it all back home over 700 miles, and so a small purchase of ten plants was all I could manage. The other good thing about buying directly in Santa Fe is that the prices are cheaper than in the catalog, and you get a 10% discount when buying ten or more plants (in any combination). I think I'm New Mexico bound again next spring - and I'll take a bigger truck this time!

This is the only place I could find the P4 hydrogel recommended by Anne Lovejoy in her book, Further Along the Garden Path. The stuff is great and lasts for years. I use it in hanging containers at our river home (zone 8-hotand humid) watering only once a week. I also use it in the garden for moisture loving plants to help them survive the heat without daily watering!

This supplier is number one on my list of own-root rose sources, and I order from most of them. The plants are small, but no smaller than other companies, and much more reasonable. They arrive on time, in excellent shape and grow well - quite satisfactory.

The most informative catalog I've ever seen with great color photos. Then when I called to place my order, the operator knew all of the plants and even suggested I didn't get a plant as it may not do well in my area of the country! The service was fabulous. Okay now, what did the plants look like? They were gorgeous, healthy and packed securely. They even had a tag on one plant saying it hadn't been hardened off yet and that I should do it before planting out in garden! They plants have done wondrously! Also they send a booklet on how to be waterwise with the xeriscape plants!

I recently ordered several plants from High Country Gardens. Although I have not yet received my plants, I thought the person taking my telephone order seemed well informed and sincere about the information she offered me as I read her my order. For example, I ordered three Helianthus maximiliani plants. The receptionist informed me that each plant grows rather large and ultimately takes up approximately a 9' square area. I reduced my order to two plants, and appreciated the advice.

After moving to Dallas from Rochester, NY I had serious problems getting my garden started. A received a catalog from A High Country Garden last spring and ordered their Water Wise Jumbo Garden, some coneflowers and a couple plugs of Pink Chintz Creeping Thyme. I picked the date I wanted them delivered (one of the nice services they offer), and was extremely pleased when they arrived on the date specified, securely packaged (some of the best packaging I've seen) and all plants were flourishing. I planted them in my nasty clay soil and threw some mulch over them. All survived, and almost all bloomed the first season. I liked the Thyme so much that in fall I ordered flat of 50 plugs and planted a thyme lawn. All plugs look like they're doing well, and I'll see this spring how fast fill in.
