Have ordered twice from them this spring. First time the plants came very quickly. All the plants were well labelled and easily identified. All the plants had good healthy roots and two were already sprouting. I put three of them in one gallon pots, since the garden they are going in isn't ready, yet. One I planted in place in my mailbox garden. All four came up well. The geranium has already bloomed beautifully for such a tiny little plant. The gallardia, which is out by the mailbox, has a bud on it right now.

Second order took longer to receive and have only received part of it. However, it is the peak season for nurseries so sort of expected that. I checked online once and was easily able to see that my order had not been sent yet. As soon as the first half of my order shipped I received an email so I could be on the look out for the package. Received the package today. All the plants look a little weary from the travel, but all have fine healthy roots. I have put them in pots also, as I have a lot of soil prep to do, but when the plants are on sale you have to buy them and then take good care of them until their new home is ready.

I have ordered from Spring Hill several times in the past. Once I lost most of the plants. They immediately replaced all of them without any hassle.

I think this is a great company. They do their best to send out healthy plants (can't control what happens to them in transit). Have replaced them without any hassles when they failed. They offer great sales several times a year and have a nice selection of plants. The information about the plants on their web site is accurate, to the best of my knowledge, and I used to order perennials for a garden center.

My only nit is that they are selling a few plants that in some areas of the country are considered invasive. They should mark them so that people in those areas won't buy them.

I ordered a number of items from Spring Hill in the spring of 2004 - a variegated weigela, a hardy carnation collection, and several clustered bellflowers.

I planted the weigela in what should have been favorable conditions according to both the info from Spring Hill and independent internet research. For some reason it died. Spring Hill sent me another one the following spring, which I planted in the same place, and which also died. Spring Hill sent me yet another one, which I planted elsewhere, in what should have been less than ideal conditions. It's living, but it hasn't flowered as much as I would have liked, but I think that's probably mostly due to the relative neglect with which it's been treated. Anyway, despite my being somewhat embarassed or reluctant, I asked twice for a replacement and Spring Hill sent me one. Kudos to them.

I also had to ask for replacements for some of the carnations as they did not survive the first year. Spring Hill sent me those replacements the following year, easy as pie - just called them and told them that some of the carnations died. All of the carnations died that next year, but I didn't bother calling for replacements because I decided I didn't really want them anymore.

The clustered bellflowers have been doing fine every year since they were planted.

I had a good enough experience with Spring Hill that I ordered (I think from them) a miniature rose bush collection a year or two later. I recall some of those dying and being replaced, too. Most of those are dead now, but that's a combination of rabbits and letting my wife be in charge of them.

Visited the site and was offered a deal I could not pass up. $10 off a $20 order and free shipping. My three bushes came (for $3.41 cents each delivered) and they look very green, moist, and healthy. They are a little bigger than I was expecting based on the price, about 3/4 foot bushed out and all in their pots with dirt. Even the rose bush looks fresh and has green leaves all over it. I feel like I got a great deal. I am trying out different companies this year, and to be honest, these plants from Springhill are actually the best looking and best value I have received so far.

My daughter ordered a pre-planned shade garden for her yard 2 years ago from Spring Hill, and all of the plants are doing great. I was ready to replace sod with perennials this year and I ordered a very large number of plants for the first time this year from Spring Hill Nursery. The plants I received are beautiful. I wanted the pre-planned perennial gardens as I didn't want to take the time to design my own, or spend the time (or gasoline) shopping for plants to duplicate the garden plan I had seen.
The pre-planned garden offered in the catalog was just what I wanted. I am in the middle of planting, and the plants are beautiful. I received them about 4 days ago, and they appear to have grown just since I received them.
I also had no packing slip or planting directions in the box (it had been opened for inspection and apparantly the paperwork was somehow lost in the shuffle). I emailed Springhill and within 48 hours I had a copy of the planting instructions for both of my pre-planned gardens, with a note to remind me that all of the plants are guaranteed. Their quick response, and the beautiful condition of the plants is greatly appreciated!

I would order from them again.

I just placed an order for 21 Bare Root Freedom Hedge Roses from Spring Hill Nursery yesterday. I'm a little concerned considering all the negative reviews about dying plants, late shipments etc. I'm not sure if I would of placed an order if I would of seen these reviews first. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the best and will keep you up to date. The plants are scheduled to ship the week of April 14th. I'm not exactly sure what to expect for the size of the plants, but I'm hoping after a nice long soak and planting in humus enriched soil that they will begin growing fairly quick. More to come...

On March 11th, 2010, syntax added the following:

Thank you for your reply. I hope that everything goes well and I enthusiastically change the feedback to positive sometime in April. I'm looking forward to receiving and planting the roses next month. Very exciting.
On April 11th, 2010, syntax changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following:

I'm very impressed with the quality of customer service that I received through Dave's Garden by Donna (a SHN CS representative). She was timely with her reply's and very helpful.

My 21 Freedom Hedge Rose's arrived a little earlier than I anticipated; however, I was ready to plant them once they shipped. The roses were in excellent condition with an extensive root system and many thick and healthy canes. The roses were beginning to come out of their dormant stage and were already shooting out new growth. They have only been in the ground for about a week; however, they look healthy and are continuing to show new growth.

I had a very positive experience with SHN and will be doing business with them again.

I've purchased from Spring Hill, Breck's, Michigan Bulb, Gurney's and Henry Field's several times. Sometimes the plants do not look good when they arrive, or for some unkown reasons plants just don't grow. When that happen, I just have to drop them an email asking for a replacement. No question asked. It's that easy. Some other online nursery I've purchased from even asked for an original shipping label to be send back by regular US mail in order to excercise their one year warranty. I have not used regular US mail for a long time that I have to check the current postage for 1st class mail.

Spring Hill's lifetime guarantee really gives me peace of mind. In fact I just got my replacement daylily from Spring Hill today. What a nice policy. I will give them two thumbs up for this. Keep up the good work.

Well I was surprised today when UPS delivered a nice big box of beautiifully packaged and healthy plants. All 3 are beautiful and a nice size not itty bitty bareroot non-sense that I have gotten before. I am impressed. I hope they keep this up and be consistent with the quality of their plants and shipping practices.

I haven't received any of the plants that I ordered from this company yet, so I can not say anything for or against that... However, I'm finding it odd that I got an "expected delivery" date and every time I check the status of my order the date becomes later and later. Originally it said I could expect the items at the end of this month... a couple of days later it was the beginning of April... and now it's pushed back to late April/early May! I understand supply and demand, but they shouldn't have an expected date that changes every time you go to look at your status. It would be better to originally give a late delivery date ,then if the order comes "early" it would be much more exciting than the disappointment of the delivery date moving further and further away.

On April 2nd, 2010, YoyoMa changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following:

I changed my rating from "neutral" to positive... I only had it at neutral because I hadn't received the plants yet, so it wasn't really fair for me to give it a rating either way.

WELL, the good news is that even though my expected delivery date kept getting pushed back farther and farther to the point that it went from a March delivery to May.... I went back and checked again and suddenly it had been bumped up again to April and I received the plants yesterday! Yay!

Now, I was pre-warned by my friend who gave me the Spring Hill catalogue that the plants will arrive tiny, so I was prepared for what I received. And I'm happy to report that ALL of the plants are alive and look very healthy! And I ordered a lot of plants (a pre-planned drought tolerant sun garden, 3 early red hot pokers, and 6 salvia) and they came well packed and protected from moving around in the box. My favorite right now is the fragrant lavender, because it just smells sooooo good.

I do have to use a bit of patience, because after planting I stood back to take a look at my "masterpiece" garden, and because the plants are so tiny it looks like I have a bunch of errant weeds growing... But I know they will come in beautifully! And I am very pleased to know about the lifetime guarantee--- I will definitely buy from Spring Hill again in the future!

I am new to gardening but was pulled in by a $20 offer for free plants, only to pay the shipping costs. At first was concerned because I had read some of he bad reviews but decided to give it a shot.

Right after placing my order, I had to contact their customer service department as the $20 offer didn't reflect in my checkout and my payment was $20 higher than I had expected. At that point I was really worried it was a scam.. However, my call to customer service went through quickly and the reperesentative was so nice about getting the problem corrected.

I received my plants really quickly. I'm no expert on quality of the plants or anything but they seemed to be just as healthy as I purchase at local nurseries with only one exception. Out of the 12 plants I ordered, was extremely happy with 11. I got a bunch of things I had never seen before and the vast majority of the plants seem to be thriving.

Will definitely do business with again to get something I really like but just can't find locally.

Highly recommend. Will review again on second order.

I decided to try and give them another chance. I ordered 2 honeyberry plants and paid about $7 in shipping. When the plants arrived they were very healthy and larger then I expected for the price. The price from Spring Hill Nursery was $10 less per plant for the same size plants that I had bought from different nursery. I had paid more money for the plants and shipping from the other vendor then I did with Spring Hill. I am very glad that I gave them a try. I will order more plants from them in the future. When I read the negative comments about this company, I think there is a misunderstanding. They do guarantee that their plants will grow. And they do replace what doesn't make the grade. And they take our word for it. And they have never set a time limit. That's a good a guarantee as there is from any mail order or on-line company. When I have called to inquire about how to redeem credits or when I have any trouble with their on-line access, they could not be more cooperative.

Their prices are competitively low, but you get better than average sized bulbs and more mature seedlings. The quality is so much better than the dried out prepackaged plants at the discount stores or the really inexpensive mail order or on-line catalog companies.

I have to admit that some of what I receive does not prosper the first year, and a few items have not been as hardy are their catalogs suggest. I order something from them every year, and never have I had to ask more than once to get a replacement or credit. So sometimes it takes two years to get the plants started, but after four years I now have an exceptional bulb and perennial garden. Patience is just a virtue when working with small and immature plants. But Spring Hill is giving adequate support. Try Plantron sometime if you do not know how difficult it can be.

I have had nothing but good experience with Springhill Nursery so far. Some years back, maybe 5 or 6 I bought their Magic Roses. Now first let me tell you I kill plants. I don't know how to garden what so ever. I planted these roses and only 1 of them grew and it grew really well but the others died which I am sure is my fault. Springhill has replace the full order 3 times already and is going to replace it again this spring with NO questions asked and no shipping fees what so ever. This time I am going to put some good soil in and maybe I can get the others to grow. The one that did take gets roses on it like crazy and all the way up until it snows on it and 5 or 6 rose at a time. So that's why I am pretty sure it isn't their fault but mine because I just am not very good with planting things, I kill most things. But as I said, they have replaced them which will be 4 time now, no questions asked, no proof provided, no money exchanged. I almost feel guilty about it. But that is their warrenty that they have. I am pretty excited because I have some Lilacs coming this spring... those I can seem to get to grow.

But in '09, I probably spent close to a thousand bucks on their plants (putting in about five different flower beds in my new location), and was quite satisfied with all my orders.
Whatever problems they were having back in '03 to '06 apparently have been fixed. I highly recommend Spring Hill Nurseries! The quality, value, and selection are hard to beat.

I live north of Chicago, but wanted to try growing lemon trees ever since I saw (and smelled) them in Italy. The 3 plants arrived and seemed to be doing well. They didn't make it throught the 2 nd winter. 2 years later I called SHN and asked if I should not even try to grow them here. The CSR was very nice and said she would send 3 new plants immediatley. I told her not to rush me as I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend more money. She replied that they replace any plant that doesn't thrive, no matter the reason. I asked how much the shipping would be, and she said there was no s&h charge. I reminded her that it had been about 3 years since I got the plants, and again, she said it didn't matter.
My 3 new plants are doing wonderfully. I just got my first lemon off of one. I found out the pots I had been using were way too small. I also ordered the Josee lilac last year, it wasn't yet a foot tall and it bloomed twice in one summer! I can't say enough nice things about SHN. I refer all my friends and family to them. I also pass along the mailings I receive to customers where I work. The prices are great, and the satisfaction guarantee is sincerely meant and acted upon. When I called the first time, I had no idea that that was their policy. The CSR didn't have to tell me about it, but they are true to their word.
I also started using their 'Pill for Plants' for my indoor and outdoor plants. The difference is amazing.

In 2006 we moved into a house with a back yard that was totally a blank page. The previous owner had planted a few scattered shrubs and that's all. So we had two raised beds installed and placed a large order from Spring Hill Gardens. The plants arrived at the proper time for planting as promised; they were well packaged and appeared healthy and ready to grow. The following spring (2007) most of the plants appeared and some actually bloomed the first summer. The following spring (2008) we succumbed to Spring Hill's "1-cent sale" and again placed a fairly large order. It was after this second order went out that I discovered Dave's Garden and the very numerous negative reviews for Spring Hill. I became pretty nervous, but relied on my previous positive experience to hope for the best. Again the plants arrived in good time and good shape.

When spring 2009 came, however a few of the plants from 2008 failed to appear. I called up to asked for replacements and was advised that new plants would be shipped in the fall. That was OK by me. Again some of the plants bloomed and some are still in the settling-in phase, but they are all healthy and leafy. Now it is October 2009 and we have received our latest order of day lilies. And nestled in amongst the packages were the replacement plants owed from the 2008 order.

I usually judge a company by merchandise and service and also by how they handle complaints and slip-ups. I don't know how Spring Hill could do any better by me.

I have ordered many plants over the years from this company. Some faired better than others but they stand by their guarantee without question. I really can't complain about a company that does that for their customers. Plants die, orders get mixed up, stuff happens but they always try to make things right, without a hassle and always a courteous email.

I ordered a few plants but was unable to get home to plant them for 3 days after their arrival. In spite of this, most of them are doing fine. Their postage stamp orchard is amazing! All six trees are growing fast and healthy. Only half of my English lavender survived, but what did live after being in the package for almost a week is growing well. My Tophat blueberry died after a few weeks but that was most likely a soil problem on my part as it arrived healthy and thrived for at least two weeks. All in all, it was a great experience.

I ordered from Spring Hill this spring. Was a little uneasy because of the comments here, but really liked the pre-planned garden and prices, so I decided to give them a chance. I ordered a sun garden and some BOGO plants (asters, Clara Curtis daisies). My plants arrived when they said they would. I had some trouble with the scabiosa in the sun garden -- they didn't make it. So I e-mailed customer service. I couldn't find my receipt to give them an order number, but they found me and promptly sent replacements. All the plants are doing great. I knew they were going to be small -- the web site description tells you that. And what do you expect at such low prices (especially with a discount code I found on the web)? Anyway, I expected to need to be patient before I'd get to see any blooms, but the rudibeckia, scabiosa, and Clara Curtis are already blooming. The bare-root day lily has filled out so well I'm considering ordering one of the day lily collections. Yes, it will still be a while before these plants grow to full size, but overall I am very pleased.

I've ordered from them for several years - I am a sucker for the "One-Cent" sales and the BOGO offers. Athough the plants are sometimes a bit rough -looking at receipt, most take off and flourish. The company has always honored the guarantee with either replacement plants or credit toward other orders.

I also bought several of their garden collections but there was a backorder issue and substitutions made. I called with my concerns and they were handled quickly. I don't blame SpringHill for the back order though, I ordered on the last day of their 1/2 price sale. When purchasing online for a much lower price than garden shops in the area I don't mind if they are smaller, they all catch up after a year or so. They also sent me potted plants for the substitutions which was an upgrade. The most importaint thing is to get them in the dirt, even if it is just a temp garden. Happy Gardening!

I must admit that my experience with Springhill was my first foray into mail-order gardening. I received my orders in good time, although the first order was sent a little early. I am in southern NH, & we were still having frost warnings when I received my first shipment. I had a little bit of a struggle keeping things alive - and lost 1 Goatsbeard - but managed to eventually get everything into the ground. My second shipment came a few weeks later. Now, I've never dealt with bare root plants, so although I followed all the instructions, several of the plants either died right off the bat or didn't come up at all. I e-mailed Springhill & told them my problems. I waited for an e-mail to tell me that I was paranoid & insane; instead, I got an e-mail saying that they were shipping me replacement plants. I've already received and re-planted some (and yes, they're still alive!) I feel that Springhill went out of their way to help me get new plants, even if I didn't really ask for replacements. I appreciate their patience, and will certainly do business with them again next spring!

I agree with the comment that "forrej" posted--made me laugh, too--it does seem to me that some folks have already made up their mind that they will be dissatisfied no matter what a company tries to do in order to make them happy. I, however, am a happy Spring Hill customer. I ordered several plants last year (some lavenders, echinaceas & rudbeckias, globe thistles, a weigelia, and some astilbes), most of which shipped in the fall and the others early this spring (as per the appropriate planting times in my area). Each and every one is not only alive but thriving!! I will be ordering from them again...BTW their sales are awesome; that's what enabled me to make the big order last year that has turned out so beautifully in my garden.

I should add--I have had a problem with some impertinent rabbits nibbling on a couple of my Rudbeckias. If I possessed the mindset that some of these posters seem to have, I guess I would find a way to somehow blame Spring Hill for even that. C'mon, folks.

I have used this company for many many years, any problems were taken care of right away, their prices are great, packaging is awesome. I would use them again in a heartbeat, and tell those that are unsatisfied that they need to be a little less "one way", some people think the world should move them to the top of the list. I think a lot of the problems are caused by ignorant gardeners.

Both as a private individual and as a non-profit organization I have been very pleased with Spring Hill/Brecks. They have great prices and good product. I usually receive plants in good condition. If not, they are replaced quickly and pleasantly. Our Club has ordered many items and I have had no negative feedback from any customer. I feel that some folks just like to complain. As I Mother used to say "they are very particular."

Actually, my mother used to say that folks who were hard to please and dissatisfied with everything were "very astute." I do feel that Spring Hill tries very hard to satisfy everyone. Perhaps there should be a customer rating from "easy to please" to "extremely astute" and the astute should be forwarded to someone in India who doesn't speak the language well. The "easy to please" should get the better plants and service.

I placed my order before reading all of the negative feedback, and was concerned that I would not receive healthy plants, but that was not the case.

I will most likely order again from Spring Hill.
Also...their packaging was excellent.
Thanks!

I have been ordering from Spring Hill by catalog for years and this is actually how I first began my gardens by buying a complete garden. I have always been extremely satisfied, if something did not make it, even months later they would immediately replace it. Over the years a few things did not come up or maybe some did and some didn't and I would just write to them with the amount that didn't make it and a shipment would arrive. Recently ordered 3 coneflowers and they were big healthy plants well packed. I have never hesitated to order from them mainly because of their replacement guarantee.

I'm guess I'm crazy or just one of the lucky ones to have a pleasant experience to give this company a positive rating. BUT my order was through HSN (Home Shopping Network) and not Spring Hill directly. So I'll give HSN the credit.

I remember my Mom used to order from Spring Hill years ago before they changed ownership and she had no problem with them. After reading all the neg ratings regarding shipping here at Dave's Garden, I hesitated to order from Spring Hill. I was looking for a particular dwarf rose bush (pink magic rose) and they seemed to be the only one that carries them.
I also remembered that HSN carries the same kind of roses and when I went to HSN's website it says 'Spring Hill'. That is where I learned that Spring Hill is HSN's supplier of plants they sell. I kind of hesitated but then I was thinking this is HSN. If Spring Hill is going to screw-up my order, HSN's reputation will be on the line. I ordered the roses (package of 5) on May 13th and receive them yesterday, May 22nd, 4 days earlier than the estimated delivery date. It was shipped through UPS and received them as described in small containers, yet very vigorous looking and already got the pink blooms on them. And I know they came from Spring Hill directly because the address was from Ohio where Spring Hill is located and not Florida where HSN is.

So I guess if you find something that only Spring Hill carries and if HSN offers them as well, get it through HSN. I think under agreement with HSN, Spring Hill have to ship their products as scheduled to protect HSN's reputation.

You get what you pay for. If you expect to get plants at 75% off the cost of the nursery you are going to get small plants not on time. I've waited 2 months for my order with the delivery date changing all the time, I finally emailed them and they promised to send my order ASAP. I received part of my order and it contained everything promised in small plants which are growing nicely. One of them did die and I contacted them to send another, we'll see if they do.

I recommend them strictly for their price, you can't beat it but you will have to put up with not getting your items in any type of time period. It almost seems as though they are growing the plants after they are ordered! Use the 50% off coupon from retailmenot!
