My first order with this company was Spring of '04. Typically I check this site before ordering from a new company, but this time I checked it after. I was very nervous, but my worry was needless. The plants arrived quickly, and the order was correct. Their packaging also kept the plants healthy through shipping, and even for a couple of weeks before I could get them in the ground (I got a little busy, oops). I purchased 3 helleborus and 6 monarda, panorama mix, all on sale (sometimes you have to worry about the sale stock you receive). While not fussy plants to begin with, all are doing wonderfully, and the monarda are now getting loads of blooms. Their prices are good (sales are excellent), and while it usually takes time and some smaller orders to begin with to trust any mail order company, I would definitely order again from them.

In Spring 2003 I ordered the mini rose collection. While I thought they arrived a little on the early side, and were a little small, I planted them. They have done wonderfully. In the fall I had to move half of them because they had grown so much, they were now too close together. The survived our truely terrible (really cold - little snow)winter and are putting on a show right now.

This spring I tried the clematis collection. All 4 are growing well.

My first experience was overall positive. Items arrived in good time. They clearly put alot of thought and effort into packaging, and for the most part, it works well. I ordered 4 different type plants, and 3 of the 4 arrived in practically perfect condition. The 4th plant had a number of broken leaves, but I guess that's not a huge issue. I was a bit worried I might have a bad experience with Spring Hill, based upon so many bad reviews here, but I guess I decided to take a chance, mainly because I find their site so well-designed and informative, much more so than some other garden/plant suppliers. I would use them again.

I had ordered from Springhill for 2 years. In general their plants arrived in good condition. If anything is amiss, Springhill would replace immediately. I found the customer service friendly and helpful. Being a newbie in roses, I called in late April for advice on the Springhill roses I planted a month ago. I saw no grow whatsoever and wanted to know if I had done something wrong. Springhill immediately offered to replace my entire order (8). I urged them not to because it might well be my doing. But the customer service rep said he just wanted to make sure I would have something. And if mine came out then just kept all 16. And he also spent some time advising me on rose maintenance.

Experienced gardeners knew by now my roses were just still in dormancy. I replanted mine and gave my original eight to a friend. Now all 16 are growing happily.

I would definitely order from them again.

Living in zone 6, I have been ordering from Spring Hill for years and have been very pleased with the company. I agree with many of the comments on Garden Watchdog about the plant size being on the skimpy side. However, after patiently waiting for about 2 growing seasons, I have seen spectacular results. I moved to my present home 4 years ago and have furnished it with mostly Spring Hill products and my garden is flourishing. I'm scrambling to find "adoptees" for many of my Spring Hill plants that need dividing. (Made lots of Spring Hill purchases since the early 1990's but had poor garden karma at my previous abode).
My only negative experience was in the plants purchased Fall of 2003. All of my hardy pansies, phlox, and some of the hardy carnations that I planted in the Fall of 2003 did not survive. So far, I have been cheerfully promised replacements and am eagerly awaiting them. Meanwhile, my Spring 2004 plants have all arrived (small) but in good condition and look like they are taking hold.

I have ordered from SpringHill for years, mostly with good success. This year I ordered several good sized orders from them. Everything has arrived with one exception, some Tenor Tall Phlox which are on backorder. The plants were well packed and in general were very healthy. There were only a very few that need to be replaced (5 or 6 out of 70 plants). I have never had a problem getting SpringHill to replace plants. I contacted Customer Service and they were very helpful, friendly and very cooperative in sending replacements. I will definitely order from them again.

I ordered with the $20 off coupon in March. No plants have arrived and the website info says expected to ship 3/28. After several emails, they finally responded today saying that all items are on back order and they can give me no estimated ship date. Well, they could have let me know! I had to pester them to find out. I haven't been charged, so I guess I'll just wait and see. I don't really expect to get any plants at this point, but I didn't have a lot invested in these particular plants anyway. If anything shows up, I'll update this rating.

On May 7th, 2004, sylvi74 added the following:

Well, I got one of the two plants that I ordered today and it looks fine, but the pot and soil were in one part of the box and the plant was bare-root in another part of the box. Kind of weird. I repotted it and it seems happy enough. Rating stays negative for now, but we'll see.
On May 18th, 2004, sylvi74 changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:

I received by remaining plant yesterday. It looks really great coming out of the box. The first one that I had to repot is doing great. I guess I would give their plants a positive but their customer service is a negative. All told, I am very pleased with the plants, especially since I used the coupon and got them so cheaply. The hassle would not have been worth it if I had spent a lot of money.
On October 4th, 2004, sylvi74 changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following:

I got an internet special of 12 monarda for $9.99. The shipping was about $6, which still made the plants affordable. The plants arrived looking great, are in the ground and growing. Customer service is still doubtful (I never received the email about shipping) but the plants are doing very well. The other plants I got from them this past spring are growing well also. I guess overall, inconsistant service but nice plants, at least for me.

I used a $20.00 coupon to "try" this company & ordered three Hellebores. Although I thought that the plants did arrive a bit early for my Zone 5A location, I was impressed with how well the plants were packaged and how healthy they are. I hardened them off for a couple days, and planted them & they are taking off like gangbusters.

If it wasn't for the coupon I most likely wouldn't have tried this company due to some of the negative things here on Garden Watchdog. I do feel though, that a person who has a negative experience is much more likely to post their feedback than someone, like myself, who was very happy with the plants they received. I would not hesitate to order again from Spring Hill. Their plants were larger, and better packed than some I've gotten from the top-rated Watchdog companies. The pots were well protected in a special plastic carrier that protected the top growth from damage. I'm really glad that I gave this company a chance!

I ordered two Meyer Lemon Trees and three cascade mini roses from Spring Hill, using a $25 off coupon for new customers, so the prices were very good. My plants arrived two weeks after I ordered them with no problems. This is the first time I have ordered plants online, although I buy just about everything else on the 'net. The plants were extremely well packed and look strong and healthy (roses about 5" x 5", lemons about 12" tall with 5-8 strong branches each). Quite a few leaves were broken on the lemons, but I'm assuming that is the danger of shipping and they will recover fast. As this is the first internet order I ever placed for plants, I kept an open mind, so that may influence my opinion on this company. However, the "shrubs" I ordered for a hedge were actually sticks when they arrived, and my husband and I found it quite hilarious, but I soaked them in water for a couple of days before planting and they are now covered in leaves. It has been quite fun to watch their progress and they seem to be thriving. I had also ordered a clematis, which was very small and wilted, but it is now a vigorous 6" plant, after only 1 week! Also, the hydrangea (also sticks) is now covered in leaves and the African Iris' are taller than the daylilies that were already in the ground. So, while the plants are not the most impressive upon arrival, just a short period of time has shown them to all be vigorous, healthy plants. I am quite satisfied and will use Spring Hill again.

However, I did call them & they made it right. I purchased more than $400 in trees again just last yr. & will be buying more this spring. My DIL purchased a couple perenniels & promptly planted them in subsoil around the mailbox of their new home..of course they didn't survive, but Springhill made it right with her. For the time being, I will rate this company as generally positive, although i am in the process of getting some replacements and we shall see how that goes.

I have spent $26 on 1 order with spring hill, for 2 magic lilies, 3 liatris, and a collection of 4 astilbes.

I have had 66% success rate on my order although springhill has been accomodating on replacements.

2 astilbes and 1 magic lily failed to make it. astilbes were probably my fault, i didn't put them into the ground immediately and we had a cold winter. magic lily was probably due to poor packing or specimen from spring hill (it arrived damaged but i planted it anyway). the rest are doing splendid.

liatris (i got 4 instead of 3) flowered this year. the other magic lily did fine. the other two astilbes survived the harsh winter in their pot and have put out new growth since i planted them in the ground, no flowers this year.

my experience with their replacements/refunds dept: extremely responsive by email, and if you work with them enough you will eventually get what you want -- i originally got a refund for the magic lily instead of the replacement i requested, but complained because their price jumped this year and my refund wouldn't cover replacement & shipping. i spoke to customer service and they told me they would ship me a replacement in the fall. i haven't called them about the astilbes yet..

but overall, i would rate them a fair-priced nursery with decent customer service.
