One mistake on this year's seed order, but not worth pursuing. Overall good luck with seeds over the years (before and after the bankruptcy) that I have dealt with Gurney. Last year's order left a little to be desired in germination, plant vigor and trueness to type, but not a bad enough experience that I didn't try again this year. The one time I bought plants (about 8 years ago), I was disappointed, but with so many local nurseries with live plants grown for the area, why order plants through the mail?

On November 10th, 2009, taufgardner changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following:

I ordered some seeds and nursery stock from Gurney's this year. More than I have in recent years. 100% good luck. The "Gotta Have It" corn was the best I've ever planted, with each stock bearing 3 -4 good sized and excellent tasting ears. The carrots I planted (wish I remember the variety) were also the best ever. I ordered the Honey Berry plants. I was skeptical when I got the plants, but they ended up working out very well and I will order from Gurney's again.
On January 26th, 2010, taufgardner added the following:

I ordered my 2010 seeds this year. They came without the shipping problems mentioned by others. All that was ordered arrived as ordered and earlier than the online promised ship date by the company. Although not the same company that existed in Yankton, SD, they do an acceptable job of meeting my expectations. And the "Gotta Have It" corn is the best I've ever planted. Just ate some frozen from last season, and it's still better than some fresh. The "Envy" carrot was also a winner. Crisp, sweet, uniform, long and well producing, even in my clay soil.
On January 26th, 2010, taufgardner added the following:

One more comment on "Gotta Have It". Plant it later as the weather is warmer for better luck in germination. Mine did fine, but was planted in south part of property in black plastic mulch.
On January 11th, 2011, taufgardner added the following:

I made my 2011 order today. Larger order than in past years because I have had good luck with this company lately. Yikes, I hope the recent negative reviews aren't an indication of the experience I may have this year!? At any rate, the company has been good to me and I have had good experience in past few years. Am confident (or at least hopeful) that this year will be the same. Stay tuned...
On January 19th, 2011, taufgardner added the following:

Seeds arrived among the earliest of my orders, within a few days of placing order. All were in good condition and packaged well. This year, I had decided to try some more nursery stock. My last experience a couple of years ago with Gurney's nursery stock turned out well and I am hopeful this year will, too. Also, I am impressed that the company is making an effort to review this forum. It is one indication that they are attempting to gain feedback that will help them as a company.
On May 17th, 2019, taufgardner added the following:

The seeds I ordered this year came as ordered and have had a great germination rate. I only plant Envy carrots because they do so well in my heavy soil and are so flavorful. And the Got To Have It corn has been a winner each time I've planted it. Gurney and sister companies are the only ones who carry the Envy carrot.

I do not fully understand the negative comments about this company because I have not had a bad experience, but the negative comments have made me a tad leery.

An update on some nursery stock I ordered a few years ago. I hazelnut tree I ordered as a pollinator for another was smallish compared to one ordered elsewhere. But fast forward to now - it is the largest, most prolific hazelnut I have and produces larger nuts. I paid less at the time, but over time got more. Thanks, Gurney.

I ordered from Gurney/Henry Field this spring after ordering in the past. All plants arrived alive, and all but 2 survived our very difficult spring. I planted raspberries, chokecherries, bush cherries, and burning bush. One plant remained dormant for 2 months!! but I knew it was alive because it was green under the bark. In all fairness, I got what I paid for, everything grew, and the company can hardly be responsible for extended hard freeze and days of heavy rain following.

On May 18th, 2009, hannahss added the following:

I ordered additional bush cherries and native plums in 2009. All arrived promptly, in good condition. Even though I was not able to plant them promptly, they have done well. The plants ordered earlier have continued to do well, and are getting big enough to be showy and productive.
On May 28th, 2010, hannahss added the following:

In spring of 2010 I ordered additional bush cherries. I admit that I was a bit put off by the negative feedback left by others, but decided to take a chance since my experiences had been good.

The plants arrived in about 2 weeks. They were starting to break dormancy, since it was a late order. They all looked healthy in the box. I had to wait about a week to plant them because of heavy rain, busy schedule, etc. They have been in for about 10 days. All are leafing out and look great.

I hope that Gurney's improves their customer service. They have been a good company in the past.
On April 16th, 2019, hannahss added the following:

I've had mixed results with Gurney's over the last five years, but most of what I've received has been viable and grown well. In particular, the plum, peach, and apple trees I ordered had good roots and broke dormancy without exception and thrived, growing a couple feet quickly that season. Unfortunately, I moved from that property before fruiting could be assessed so I can't comment on the fruit production. I also ordered an almond tree that was just exceptional with beautiful blossoms the first year, and was so sad to leave it behind that I promptly ordered another for my new place. That almond tree has grown 4-5 feet in two years now, and has a beautiful full shape. A wisteria tree also had a great start before I moved. I recently drove past the old place and every tree is still standing and so tall and full!

Overall my experience has been very positive. I ordered two of their sale 'Rainbow of Roses' collection. They were shipped within one day and arrived around 8 days later. All of the bare root roses were in great condition, good size, with nice roots and all looked fresh and not dried out. They were packed carefully. Plus it was a terrific value, even with shipping it came to only a few dollars per rose..
It is late for bare roots and I will baby them along, I knew when I ordered them that I would need to give a little tlc. But I am so happy with my order. I would definitely order roses from them again.
I ordered a packet of seeds at the same time though, it has been weeks and I still do not have the seeds.

Gurney's does take FOREVER and did push my order out once or twice, but for the price, I am extremely happy with what we ordered! I spent about $150 with a 50% off coupon, so got around $300 worth of merchandise. Every plant we got was alive and within the few weeks we have had them, established themselves and took off. We planted some summer blooming bulbs and I'll be surprised if they don't bloom sooner! They've grown like crazy! I will be ordering more from them in the future. Can't beat that price and quality! Can I just say that I love Gurney's? My grandpa got me onto ordering from them years ago, and I keep going back. Their pricing is very fair for the quality, healthy plants you receive. When one of my cherries from them died last year, I received a swift response from Customer Service and they replaced it without question. The replacement is currently potted in my greenhouse and growing like there's no tomorrow.

Everything I have ever ordered from them has done well, with the exception of the one cherry as mentioned above. Every nursery gets a few duds, no matter how good they are. Gurney's makes it right when there's a problem. I will definitely shop with them again!

I just placed an order today and I received the best customer service ever! I have been ordering from Gurney's for years and never really had any major problems. If ever there was an issue with their plants I would either get a refund or a replacement. I ordered a Sundance apple tree 5 years ago and it never bloomed or flowered so I called today, talked to a service rep and he had a record of my order and gave me a full credit!! Of course I applied that to today's order. But seriously, who gives a credit after 5 years?! I have been mail ordering plants for over 20 years and this is a first. Thanks Gurney's!!

This is my first order and so far I am very pleased with it. The plants were well packed, very moist and arrived in a timely manner. Size wise the berries were all stocky and are definetly a good producing age-the stock for the Anne raspberry is four times the size of the one I bought at a local nursery and was only a couple dollars more! The trees are small but I got two for one price(the hardy mulberry) so I was happy with it. Everything arrived dormant but after one soaking the next day everything popped out with buds. So far I'm happy with my order. I will keep updating as the grow.

Just received a raisen tree from them it was much bigger then I expected-its about 4' with a good amount of branches. Not pencil thin, about the thickness of the fruit trees Ive bought at Tractor Supply-about 2 inch in diameter.. Dormant of course but definitely very healthy-the truck is super agreen with buds.. Well packed and shipped fast. So far I don't have anything negative to say. Will given updates once all the plants once they've grown.

I ordered a blackberry, raspberry, 25 strawberries, spinach seeds, and 2 native plum trees for about $40 including shipping. I was hoping it wasn't too good to be true and it wasn't! My trees were 2 ft sticks as anticipated. It's been a month and both are covered with leaves. I planted spinach seeds 3 weeks ago and they are ready to be picked! My strawberries, raspberry, and blackberry arrived separately about 3 weeks ago. They were bareroot and looked as expected. My raspberry is covered in leaves. My strawberries have grown tremendously. They have been flowering like crazy, but I'm pinching them off to help them establish roots. Some must have slipped by me because strawberries started grow. My blackberry hasn't shown any signs of life so Gurney's gave me a credit for the price I paid. I ordered another one plus another raspberry, some lavender, and tons of seed. I don't need some flourishing plant delivered to my door for it to have transplant shock. Bareroot is good by me and the prices can't be beat when coupons are available.

I have been a Gurney's customer for years and have had great experience and even when I had a negative experience with a product they have been easy to deal with as far as customer service.
To start with I hate reviews that say that they received a stick because generally they are describing what is best practice for bare root plants an unfeathered or feathered whip with a good root system. Often these individuals expect a lowes sized trees which we all know are often rootbound.
In my experience Gurney's is more expensive but if you visit their site they will send you a coupon for half off next visit on 100 back on 200 dollars. I just load up my cart and make as many purchases as I need to hit the coupon price. I have received everything I orderd and when they do miss the product they will ship it without complaint.
I also have had some trees die on me even years later and they honor their gurantee for life and ask no question and merely ship off the tree or plant to me which is a reason I keep coming back. A tree dying two years later is not the company's fault but they still support their product.
I have, however, had two issues when ordering a magnolia tree I did indeed get a stick, a single unbranched 20 inch tall green whip wit a minimal amount of rooting. I also ordered an apricot mix that came impossibly small because they were out of stock so they sent me two small ones which was not ideal. They did replace it the following year with a full sized one when both tiny ones died.
To give some credibility to my account I have 41 different fruit trees and most of them are from Gurney's. They do have a limited selection but most of what they do offer is good product. I also order Dill's Atlantic Giant from them every year and seed order seems just as good as live plant order.

I placed 2 orders from them this spring with their 50% off coupon. The trees came through wonderfully. All the fruit trees have started growing except 2 of them. I contacted them about it and they said they would replace them or credit me. The nut trees haven't shown any sign of life yet. I have been told they take longer so I will see. I got a free top hat blueberry plant from Gurney's all I had to pay was the $5.99 shipping. Some time ago I started to get their magazines and was a little skeptical about ordering from them since I was used to the glossy magazine that Burpee's usually sends. Out of curiosity, I went to their website and subscribed to their e-mails. Like most seed companies subscribing to their e-mail list=better deals. I couldn't pass up the free blueberry plant which included no other catches, saying I had to buy a certain amount to get the plant 'free' It wasn't like that at all. My plant arrived a week later healthy and green. So I went ahead and ordered a pink lemonade blueberry on sale as well. I was surprised with the quality of the Top Hat blueberry seeing as it was 'free' and free usually means dead, so I'm expecting the quality of the pink lemonade blueberry to be of excellent quality as well. I have a small patio garden where I grow most things in pots and usually order from Burpee, this year I have taken a chance on two new seed companies, Gurney's and Territorial Seeds, both experiences have been good so I may consider ordering more from them in the future.

I have a very large acreage property with five separate fruit orchards with over 150 trees,a half acre blueberry patch, and a half acre strawberry patch. On average I spend thousands of dollars a year on edible landscaping, and I purchase from a wide range of internet plant purveyors.

In the grand scheme of things, Gurney's is a good, reliable company if you understand the company's strengths and quirks. I have ordered from them for years because their customer service is easy to deal with, and their ironclad plant replacement policy is trouble free.

Fruit trees-meaning apples, pears, peaches, plums, apricots-are their overall most reliable product. The vast majority of their trees are larger than what I have been able to procure from other companies, which have higher price points.
The only times I have received relatively small fruit trees are products that are unusual varieties like Trugold peach, Flat is Wonderful peach, Sugar Pearls apricot, or Harlayne apricot.

Their apple trees and pear trees have always been large caliber and very satisfactory.

Blueberry bushes and grape vines have always been of consistently good quality in my experience. The blueberry bushes are relatively expensive for the size of the plant, but they've all arrived alive and vigorous. Ka-Bluey blueberry especially grow quickly especially if potted in Miracle Grow for the first year. Frequently they are triple or quadruple in size when I transplant to the field in the following year.

Though the one year old grape vines look small on arrival, I rarely have any of them fail to establish directly on in-ground planting. I particularly like Pink Reliance for vigor and beauty. By the next year, mine were twenty times larger than planting with minimal care and Miracle Grow fertilizer a couple times a year.

Asparagus crowns are another product that I find very gratifying from Gurney's. Their two year old crowns are the worth the added expense. I've purchased Jersey Supreme, Jersey Knight, Jersey Giant, and Purple Passion-all were enormous crowns compared to two year crowns I've purchased from other websites and at the local brick and mortar big box stores. I have a quarter acre in asparagus on my property, and the survival rate on these crowns has been excellent. I do recommend spraying the crowns with a fungicide on arrival because mildly damp crowns packed in a sealed box has a tendency to get moldy-it's a problem I've noticed from all mail order crowns I've received.

I have come to realize over years of trial and error that the following plants supplied by Gurney's are wee small.

1) Figs - I've used larger toothpicks
2) Bush cherries-Carmine Jewel comes in a 2 inch pot despite it's retail price of $35 a plant
3) Superior Chinese chestnut-drinking straw size and slow growing. (My 3 yr old trees are thigh high to me, and I'm 5'2")
4) Raspberry canes - Small compared to other places I've purchased from and a very small root system. I've found them hard to establish. Survival rate has been like 1-2 plants out of 10 purchased. I've found it true 3 years running on the Anne raspberry plants.

The sweet potato slips are expensive but have been as good as any that I've gotten from other internet sites. You'll want to open the box immediately and get the slips into water when they arrive because they ship with very little moisture retention packing.

I would advise against ordering live vegetable plants like tomatoes from Gurney's. Tomato plants really don't ship well regardless the seller, and I find tomato plants are pretty much the easiest garden plant to start from seed aside from beans and peas. Growing tomatoes from seed is pretty idiot proof, and seeds are a much better bang for the buck for vegetables in general anyway. One packet of tomato seeds can last me four years of planting-that's true for squash, eggplant, cucumber, pumpkin, and watermelon just to name a few.

The uncertainty in when an order will ship is just a fact of life with Gurney's. If you can't accept it, you need to find some place that ships like clockwork-such as Amazon.com. Gurney's sometimes has to locate the plants from its sister companies/network of suppliers before the items can ship. Multiple shipments to complete an order is just the way they function. It's normally two weeks to a month from the time I order before I receive a complete order, and sometimes items can pushed back to ship next season or get cancelled altogether. Those are the breaks when ordering plants over the internet. I've experienced cancellations and deferrals on shipment of product from 100% of the internet nursery's that I've used.

I've used Burpee's, Park Seeds, Wayside Gardens, Raintree Nursery, Burnt Ridge Nursery. Peaceful Valley Farm Supply, Grandpa's Orchard, Stark Brothers, Berries Unlimited, and I'm sure I'm forgetting to list a dozen others.

My favorite thing about Gurney's are-as I mentioned-their hassle free replacement of dead plants regardless of whatever ignorance, idiocy, or neglect a customer inflicted on the hapless plant.

My second favorite thing about Gurney's is that they send links for deep discounts on all their products if you subscribe to their e-mail advertisements. That $35 Carmine Jewel bush cherry was mine for $15. Yes, it's still tiny, but the great thing about bush cherries is that they grow extremely fast and are very forgiving of stupidity we humans inflict on them. I've had Hansen's and Nanking bush cherries go from six inches tall to over five feet tall in 2 years.

I wrote a similar review for Michigan Bulb, apparently Gurney's and Spring Hill are related. Their websites look exactly the same but the offer slightly different plants so I am not too worried about the quality since I was happy with my Michigan Bulb order. The only thing I am not happy with are their dynamic price changes which can happen from one second to another.

For example, you get your $20 off coupon which sounds so amazing right? Well, watch the prices of your shopping cart increase a great deal, you end up paying MORE with this coupon than if you don't use one. I had a banana tree in my cart, which I found for $8.99. When I added the coupon, my price went up to 19.99 and the prices on the website changed drastically too.

I became fed up with the price increase so I left the site and ended up finding Gurney's on Amazon with MUCH cheaper prices. I clicked on the Gurneys link which brought me to their site with very low prices and flat rate shipping. I ended up ordering from this version of their site and overall I am happy with the price and service so far. Am awaiting delivery.

A call to customer service assured me that they had received my order, though, and there was no need to place another one.

Later, my fiance says, "We could use a couple of fruit trees here and here," I asked him if Native Plums would be ok and he said yes, so I placed the third order with the same coupon and the same website issue, though the order was received.

A few days later, I got my confirmations and within about a week of ordering, I got a shipping notice for the first and third order. Much to my surprise, they were going to be delivered the next day by the time I tracked them.

The plants seemed well wrapped. The "Dwarf Venous Orange" which I understand is a Calamondin and not a sweet orange like they have it labeled, arrived in decent health, though it was a bit bug eaten. The first three Nankings were already showing green buds. The two plums are a still fast asleep. I'm hoping they are able to break dormancy, but if I look around, several of the trees we have in my yard haven't yet.

A week later I got the shipping confirmation for the next six Nanking Cherries, on the day they were to arrive this time, and they were much like the previous ones. I can't vouch for everything, but the Nanking Cherries and citrus certainly seem to arrive alive.

On April 8th, 2014, neferset added the following:

I can now vouch for the Native Plums. They are also beginning to wake up for spring. Everything seems to be alive and in good health.

I received my Spring catalog from Gurneys in the mail. It had a coupon on the front for 100 dollars off a 200 dollar order. Every year when I get my taxes back I order the items for my garden from Gurneys and the coupons on the catalog always save me a lot of money. I've been doing this for years. Well this year I went on their site and got everything I needed for my garden. The total was 228 dollars. i then put my coupon code in, making my total 128 dollars. i completed the checkout process and I thought everything was fine. Until about a week or so later when I received my credit card statement showing I had been charged the full amount. I've always used their coupons and never had this problem. I contacted them about the situation and I've never hard back from them. If they don't do anything to fix the issue, I will not be doing business with them anymore. I don't have the money to get cheated out of 100

Gurney's finally returned my email and apologized for messing up on my order and refunded me the money they over charged. Thanks to their great customer service i will continue using Gurneys for my garden needs.

I ordered plants last spring from here. they came in but I was busy remodeling our house. So I put the strawberries in the fridge and put the bushes and plants in pots on the back patio..for a couple of months, giving them some water when they started to wilt or when I remembered haha. I had ordered:

Gurney whopper strawberries
Joseph Climbing Rose
Bi Colored Butterfly Bush
Zebra Grass
..and some other stuff ($200 worth)
OH Grapes, 2 type of grapes Niagra and Concord

Strawberries are doing great, Zebra grass was 2 ft tall this fall..even after my husband mowed it over a couple times over the summer..

The Bicolor and Rosebush...I was prepared that they wouldnt be like the picture shown, but I was willing to try them. I really loved the colors. They were about 18"-24" when I got them. They are both 6 feet tall. The colors are correct on them! Made me happy! My Aunt had asked me if the roses had any smell, I got the first blooms..They smell just like my grandmas roses. They smell beautiful and look the same. Definately not disappointed.

Grape vines, I had grapes on them already after planting. I picked them off to promote growth..against my will haha. Im looking farward to what they do this year :). Showed up about 12-18", they are now approx 4 feet.

I really like this company and Im getting around my order for them this year.

I ordered Sundance and PixieCrunch apple trees in the spring and the trees were very healthy upon arrival. They both made it through the year in very good shape.

I've read Cathy's notes below and I just want to point out how important it is to let your customers know if you can fill their orders or not. This would have given her time to look elsewhere for her fall plants.

I wish she could have gotten her plants in the ground this fall. It is 'that' frustrating when you look forward getting what you ordered only to be told you won't get your plants.

My experience with Gurney's has been a very big positive for me...I've been waiting twenty years to get some land to plant a small vineyard and orchard. The PixieCrunch and Sundance were very solid beautiful trees with good reviews at http://www.orangepippin.com.

Like other people writing reviews here, we were surprised that the dwarf peach tree we ordered arrived as a 4-foot, thumb-thick "twig" with a few roots. We kept faith, though, and planted it as directed. The first year, it amazed us as it thrived and grew. By year two, it bore fruit. Over the past two years (years 3 & 4), it survived an October blizzard and two hurricanes, and it bears more bounteous, delicious peaches every summer. Give twigs a chance! Our tree is everything the Gurney's catalogue promised, and the peaches are truly the best we have ever tasted.

I am a Master Gardener in central California. My focus is School Gardens. There are over 50 school gardens in our area, all dependent on donations and grants for sustainability of their gardens. Last month, I wrote to over 35 seed companies asking for seed donations from their 2013 seed collection. I also said that I would pay shipping costs if need be. Well, to my delight, I received a BIG box of seeds soon to be out of date from Gurney Seeds. And they did not ask me to pay anything! Now I have the pleasant task of distributing these packets of seeds to school gardens for their upcoming plantings!! Gurney's is an awesome partner in education. Thank you!

See a lot of negative reviews and maybe I am lucky. I had an email offer for a gold rush apple tree for around 5 bucks that I couldn't pass up. The tree shipped in excellent condition with massive roots and the trunk as big around as my thumb. Shipped early in the year well before I had time to get it in the ground so I stuck it in my wife's flower pot an kept it watered few weeks later things warmed up in Indiana and I planted it in the ground. Few more weeks and everything came to life. Awesome to see! Figured I would give credit where it's due. I got an awesome price and a really healthy tree!

90% of what I ordered was nice sized and started growing well right from the start. The carmine jewel dwarf cherry's, currant, and wolf berry had leaf die back to the point that I was going to compost them, but they re-sprouted new leaves. I did not expect the plants to have die back considering the nursery is in the next state.

The only thing that I didnt like was that the standard apple tree was topped at 3 feet before being shipped, and whoever did it apparently had a hard time cutting because it had three cut marks below where it was topped, as if they kept trying to go higher up the tree until they could get their pruners to cut all the way through the tree. But the tree is putting on new growth so I cant complain much

I have to give this company a positive rating. I bought a sugar pearls apricot and a rose bush from this company in the spring of 2012. The apricot was the tiniest tree i have ever received. I can't complain however, because it said 2-4' in the description and mine was a little over 3'. But it was full of life. This is it's second year in my garden, it is still very small but it bloomed this spring!

The rose bush did not make it through the winter. I called them and they sent me a refund check without any hassle at all.

From what i remember from a year ago, shipping was problem free as well.

We ordered several plants - fruit trees, berries, asparagus, arctic kiwis. We ended up getting sucked into one of their pay $100 for $200 deals. Most of the plants have been growing beautifully but a few didn't work out. For those, we took advantage of their 100% guarantee and received a hassle-free refund. I plan to order from them again.

I have been ordering from Gurneys for several years and have never had any real problems. I like to take advantage of the half off coupons in spring and blowout specials in the fall. I have gotten lots of shrubs like Butterfly bush and Blueberry bushes some as low as 3.00 each and they were a pretty good size for 3.00.
This year I got three Peonies which were reasonable price for Peonies and all three came to 51.00 and I used my 25.00 coupon so basically I got three nice peonies for 26.00 plus shipping. I was very happy with the bargain I got and the communication was better than ever. I got emails every step of the way letting me know what was going on and when I could expect my plants. The last one came today and it was a very healthy root like the others and I am happy with my purchase, I have always been happy with my purchases from this company. :)

Their catalogs are accurate and they always send what they advertise. Great company! I will continue to order lifelong from this company. Last year I ordered some nursery stock from Gurney's. I ordered bush cherries (which came in a group of 3) and aronia (a native berry bush). The plants looked healthy when received, and grew well initially although I may have lost 2 bush cherries after the Summer's drought. I also ordered deeply discounted late season 3 gooseberries and 4 aronias. I was only shipped two gooseberries, but the (overseas) call center refunded the cost of the missing gooseberrry without hassle. Unfortunately, neither one of the gooseberries appeared to have made it (likely due to the drought), but the aronia did fine (even one I accidently mowed down). This year, I ordered more bush cherries and some currants when they had their 50% off 1 day sale. Overall, I don't expect 100% yield on mail order nursery stock, especially when it's low cost, so my persepctive is generally positive.
