I have ordered some apple trees from Gurney's the past couple of years, and they're a little expensive but every tree has lived and been a decent size, though I have not had any fruit yet. ( I don't expect to until the trees are older of course ) So to me it's worth the price. This spring I ordered an apple tree and their "sugar pearls" apricot tree. The apricot tree was so tiny and pathetic it would take forever to get fruit, especially for the price, so I emailed them expecting to be hassled about sending the tree back at my expense. I was surprised to get an email back the next day that they would send me a replacement tree without any further action on my part. Today the mail arrived and there was a big box from Gurney's. I was SHOCKED to find not one, but TWO large, well branched trees! I've never posted on this website about all my horrible experiences (autumn ridge, cough) with mail order nurseries, but this deserves a hat tip to Gurney's- Thank you!

I have ordered seed from Gurney over the years with complete satisfaction. Last year I ordered some rose bushes. They were healthy and are still doing great. Recently I received an email offer of re-blooming Lilac Josee. I could not believe the price. Just let me say I got five for the price of one (regular price). I didn't expect much, but when they came -this week- not only were they healthy, six to eight inches tall, but the were already blooming. I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am with my purchase.

Awesome customer service. Its hard to find that anywhere today. I called in to the customer service number and the person i talked to was able to answer all my questions from billing to shipping to how and when to plant my fruits/vegetables. Most companies you have to talk to 5 different people to get those answers. Very satisfied.

I ordered a few different cane berries, seeds, and garlic starts. I still haven't received the garlic (supposed to ship for fall) but I did receive the rest of the order in a reasonable amount of time. The seeds in particular were shipped very quickly. The berry canes are all growing right now.

I did send them one email with a question about the approximate shipping time of the berries and I never heard back, so their customer service could be better. I guess just hope that everything is shipped correctly so you don't need to talk to customer service...

I had a fairly long list of things that I wanted to order for the spring, but was a little leary because of some of the negative reviews. I decided to order some of my items from Gurney's and some from Miller's Nursery. So far I have been pleasantly surprised. I received confirmation of my order immediately and within a couple of days they sent me another email stating that my 1st installment had been shipped. I received that order today. They sent what they said they were sending and I thought it was packaged appropriately. They also included estimated shipping dates for the rest of my order (which were plants and trees that won't ship until the appropriate planting time for my zone). I am impressed by their promptness. The only item I didn't receive that I was hoping to get with this 1st shipment was my pack of beefsteak tomato seeds because I would like to start them soon. I need to call about that. They did not say that they were shipping them but I was hoping the seeds would show up with this shipment since all of my other seeds did. I plan to repost when I recieve the rest of my order. I am very curious to see how my experience will be when the trees and plants arrive. Oh, and as a side note, I haven't heard anything at all yet from Miller's Nursery aside from the initial confirmation email.

I'm amazed at the negative reviews, especially since Gurney's has a lifetime guarantee on many of their plants.
I've planted from Gurney's three years now. My mom, who has had a garden since the 70's, recommended them as the best of her experience.
In the past I've always ordered seeds: sweet corn, water and musk melon, yellow squash, zucchini, and green beans. The only problem I had was with my sweet corn. I had heavy rain the day I planted last year. It had about 80% germination, but that was probably due to the fact that it all lumped up in a corner from the downpour. I actually transplanted (which everyone says you can't do) back into rows. It didn't suffer from the transplant and set large, tasty ears.
This year, I'm excited to order asparagus, raspberries, and a peach tree. I will update once my order comes in.

I have purchased from Gurney's for 35 years and they are always great! My fabulous gardens originate from Gurney's (and other good mail-order garden sources). People stop to take photos of my yard; an art club spent their day here once, painting; my neighbors tell me we have far more songbirds and a greater variety of them since I started gardening at this house 12 years ago.

So, what exactly have I ordered from Gurney's? Flower and veggie seed, always. Their asparagus, always touchy for me to get started in my waterlogged heavy soil here, grew ferns clear up over my head last summer. Ever-bearing strawberries, which spread rapidly, so my 2009 order has tripled. Raspberry and blackberry plants last year arrived with HUGE root systems, jumped out of the ground, and I had berries last fall even tho I ordered late. Their seeds do wonderfully in my vegetable garden, and I have a full freezer to prove it.

Their Saskatoon blueberry I planted two years ago hasn't done well, and they are replacing it this spring (shipping at the right planting time for my zone, which saves me trying to figure that out for every darned plant).

For anyone new to ordering plants thru the mail or dealing with bare root plants, READ THE DIRECTIONS & FOLLOW RELIGIOUSLY! That is the key to success with Gurney's and other mail order plants. It's not the same as buying some hothouse, over-fertilized, already-blooming plant at the local nursery (which will get buggy & die quickly in your real-life garden, btw, because all that forced growth makes for softer, more vulnerable leaves & the plant is shocked to deal with outdoor garden conditions--what?! no daily hormones? no fish-fertilizer spray every morning? hey, there are bugs out here!).

Oh, and even tho I emailed Gurney's about my ailing Saskatoon blueberry plant right in the middle of their biggest rush of the year (March), they got back to me within just a few days to say they were sending a replacement. Since I know they're totally swamped, I was impressed.

Love 'em! Will always order from Gurney's. Good plants, good seeds, nice people.

Not what I asked, anyway I think it looks different. What bothered me is neither the strawberries or blueberry tell which variety. Didnt I mention I'm obsessive I have white plant stakes with each plant. Gurneys planting guide advised removing blossoms from junebearers - remove blossoms till July on everbearer. Since I didnt have a clue which variety I did nothing. Seems I got a junebearer which sent a lot of runners. I potted 50 plants from my 50 order. I ordered Fort Laramie Everbearing 25 plants for the new 3 tier Pyramid Bed also ordered this year. Emailed them because my order no longer in order status. I have actually used several of the $25.00 off coupons this year. My birthday is in early spring and I begged family and friends for them this year. I ordered standard cherry trees, blueberry bushes, dwarf cherry trees, pecan trees, and a tophat blueberry. The only problems we had were that we were not ready when they arrived, way before the last frost, and we ended up planting the carmine jewel, top hat, and the pecan trees in pots. Everything that was planted inside has died except for one pecan tree. Everything that went into the beds we had prepared is thriving, the blueberry bushes are even blooming now. How very cool is that, I will have berries on 2 of the 7 bushes this year. I am extremely pleased and will order from Guerney's again. I am told that they will replace the items that did not thrive, we will see about that.

Had two types of seeds that sprouted and died and two hydrangias that died from the crazy cold we had, should have covered them as they were all leafed out when they came. emailed gurneys and got response immediatly, replaced, no ?s asked. I placed 2 orders this year with Gurney's. I ordered 2 asian pears to replace 2 trees after one of the competitors sent me pecan trees labeled as asian pears, instead of actual asian pears. Then when they announced their end of summer sale I picked up 2 of the U of S Prunus x Kerrasis trees (Cherry bushes) in their end of season sale. Trees shipped within 2 weeks well packaged.

Bare-root pear trees came in a cardboard box with roots and bulk of tree wrapped in a moist paper-like substance. Pear trees were about 3.5-4 feet tall. One tree was too big to soak the roots in a 5 gallon bucket, other barely fit. Followed the planting instructions exactly for the smaller tree but the larger tree planted without soaking. Both trees are currently budding.

Cherry trees came in a box that reminded me of action figure or Barbie doll packaging.... Trees came potted 18-24 inches tall. Lots of foliage on the live trees and both in good shape. I am curious as to whether they will start selling the other U of S bushes when released for import to the United States.

Website had a place where you could check on the status of your order and they sent an email when the trees shipped with a tracking number.

Prices without a coupon or sale are a bit high though....

Overall pretty satisfied with this company.

I sent it off by mail on a friday and received the seed packed a little over a week later, on monday. i got the strawberry plants and gladiolus bulbs on wednesday. All the seeds were there (huge packets, some had 200+seeds) except the giant bell peppers which they said were out of stock, they refunded me the money prorated to the coupon. They didnt have planting information for my zone, but i can google that. The bulbs seemed fine but the strawberry plants were really small. 4 were okay but the rest were small, only 1-2 inches, some with no leaves (just one leaf stem), one with only one root, and even the big ones had yellow/dead leaves. Plus after i separated them i could only find 9, not 10. I called, was not put on hold for long at all, spoke with an american, she said i couldnt get my money back because i used a coupon but they could resend the plants. she even put a rush on it since i said i was moving in two weeks and was worried i wouldnt get it. I never got a tracking number for the first shipment but that didnt matter to me since they came fast. I didnt have to send back the dead strawberry plants so im going to try to go ahead and plant them and see what happens. What more could you ask for?

I ordered a Highbush Cranberry and three Butterfly Bushes from Gurney's in spring 2004.

The Cranberry has grown from a stick that I was seriously worried about into quite the large, healthy bush. It's never produced a lot of fruit, but I'm assuming that's because I don't have it where it gets as much sunlight as it probably needs. It really is a big bushy thing, though, at least eight feet high now, with multiple big stems.

One of the Butterfly Bushes died early on and I had no problem having it replaced (if I recall correctly, they actually sent me three, since my original order was for three - even though I really only wanted the one). Unfortunately, only one still lives, but that's probably my fault, too.

Today I received the Blueberry Collection which was 3 different blueberry varieties and a Jackmani Clematis. All 4 plants were very well packages and already budding. For a cost of $26 (including shipping) for those 4 plants, I couldnt be happier and will definitely buy from them again.

I do think this company as well as some of the others which may be connected with this one would benefit from better customer service and communication, specially in the order status area but as for quality of the plants, A+.

I want to say that I rarely purchase from a company with marginal reviews on DG. However, having the 20$ off 40$ coupon, I chose to take the risk and purchase a combo of three citrus plants. I am quite pleased. I received three of the four yesterday-very, very well packed. Though the pruning left a bit to be desired (on one the leaves were cut in half on top!) no real damage was done. Rootballs are very nice, and all the plants were well leafed out with a height of at least 9". Good instructions were included. Not a leaf out of place, except as mentioned above, and the plant were moist on arrival. No stress from transplant noted.

If my last mini fruit is different but at this point I am delighted that I took the risk! (I will repost if any is different.) I received excellant shipping info, and timely delivery. Surprised as I am, I am giving them an A++ on this order, and may again order when sales arise!

The tracking doesn't work even with the tracking numbers provided. Customer service was good as long as you don't get the "Indian guy", he just gives you BS to try and get you off the phone. Gurney's are great with sending replacements, I was concerned about not receiving my rasberry plant, and the lady just sent one out again, no questions asked. I will definatefly buy from them again.

I have ordered a large amount from Gurney's (and other related companies to a lesser extent) in recent years and have been satisfied with the quality and prices. The few times I've had a problem with a product not being up to standard they have immediately replaced it without any hassle. I usually end up placing multiple orders each year and have never had a problem getting what I ordered within a reasonable timeframe.

I will say that they go overboard with the email sales solicitations. I'd pay more attention to them if they were occassional, but when I receive several each week from Gardens Alive companies I often just ignore them.

Overall I've had good success with their products and would recommend them to others as a source for "standard" seed and nursery stock. Generally I only plant open-pollinated seeds and they have a decent selection of the basics at fair prices, which I can then supplement with additional varieties from other specialist seed companies. I've also been very pleased with their fertilizers, particularly the sweet corn fertilizer which gave me good results when I tried it last year.

Cue company reply about striving for 100% customer satisfaction (and probably ten emails trying to sell me something along with it)...

So far so good!!! I have placed two seperate orders with this company. The first order was a sugar maple, a norway maple, and a few honeylocust. When the bare root trees came it was later in the season and they were no bigger round than a pencil. I promptly called the company, customer service was fantastic!!! She appologized for the tiny trees, said all my money would be refunded which it quickly was. All she asked is that I not throw away the trees. She suggested maybe planting them at a camp or donating them which I thought was fantastic. The second order were very large allium bulbs. When they came two had a little mold on the bottom, again I quickly called incase they did not bloom. Again great customer service. They promptly sent new bulbs and asked me to plant them anyway.I did. It is warmer than usual for March in Upper Michigan. Hurray two out of three with the mold on them are already 4 inches tall. Thank you Gurneys!!!

So far so good with this company. I've put in two separate orders. One for myself and one for my family in texas. (I want them to have beautiful gardens too).

Everything I ordered from Gurneys arrived safe and sound. I was actually impressed with the dwarf fruit trees as I thought they would be rooted cuttings with very little to no leaves. But they were about 7 inches tall with plenty of foliage for so small a size.

The only complaint I have is with their order status and the tracking. When they split the order they only provide tracking info for the first package, which is usually the seeds first in my case. But the subsequent packages don't get a tracking number (At least not on the website). This is very confusing as I thought that the rest of my order was canceled while I had already been charged full price.

Bottom line is that they did right by me so far. And all the seeds I ordered from them germinated. Prices were fair. All that is left is to see if my mom will ever receive the order i put in for her. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I have ordered from Gurney's several times this year. I ordered seeds for my garden which did very well. I ordered their Ka Bluey blueberry bush. When it arrived it was health, green and larger then I expected. I also ordered 3 Blackberry plants which all looked health but one never grew and 6 daylilies which had huge fans. There were a couple of small problems. When the daylilies bloomed the same season as I got them they were not the color I had ordered. I called Gurney and notified them about the problem with the daylilies and the blackberry plant. Their customer service was very helpful. They were responsive and courteous. They notified me that they would send out replacement plants in the spring at the appropriate planting time. I offered to pay for the beautiful daylilies that they sent or to return them, but they said to keep them that it was their error. I have been very pleased with all my interactions with this company. They stand behind there product. They have been more then fair in dealing with me. I am sorry to hear that some others may not have had the same excellent service that I have received, but I recommend Gurney's to all my family and friends. I will continue to do business with them as long as they continue to provide such good service and reasonably priced quality products.

Here is an update on the replacement plants. I received notification via email on Monday that they had shipped my new order and also my replacement order. They both arrived on Friday which is when Gurney said it would arrive. They had my new blueberry plants and day lilies in one package and in the other, they had 3 beautiful large Triple Crown Blackberry canes. I called them to say I only needed one because on my original order of 3, only one of the plants died. They said that they were replacing all the items to ensure my satisfaction. Needless to say I was very pleased with the service and their commitment to taking care of me. The Gurney No-Risk Guarantee is excellent. I have no complaints. They say that, " If you're not happy with one of there products, they will replace it, give you a credit or refund your money for the full amount of your purchase price and that all nursery stock, trees and plants are guaranteed for as long as you garden". This has been my experience. They really do stand by their products. I do not work for Gurney's but I do refer a lot of people to them. I think that they are trying to again earn back the trust and loyalty of the customers who left due to prior poor service or negative experiences.

I was pleasantly surprised when I ordered seeds and plants on their web site this past winter. I took advantage of their 25$ off a 50$+ order on Februrary first. My seeds arrived a couple of weeks later, which was still earlier than I needed to start ahead here in zone 6. My perennials and veggies arrived the end of March. My Jersey Hybrid Aspargus roots were mostly thick, fleshy roots with defined crown tips. The few that looked like thin stragglers I planted close together. The potato eyes were blemish free 50 cent piece size. I planted the aspargus and potatoes in tubs that week. After shoots came up and frost danger passed I planted the asparagus in the veggie garden. The perennials came in individual plastic pots 2" square and 3 1/2"deep. All had plenty of foliage, were packed well and still slightly moist. This was my first year ordering from Gurney's. I am happy. Everything performed well! All perennials bloomed and have formed substantial clumps considering their small but healthy starting sizes. I will try ordering from them again this coming winter for more sping fever planting fun in 2010.

I have ordered from Gurneys Seed and Nursery off and on since the 1950's and always got good results. However, I have never had to have anything replaced until now. I ordered two Asian Pear trees and one was skinned by a mechanical digger and I ask for a replacement. I got the replacement within three weeks. This was outstanding service for a mail order company showing that they do honor their warranty. They sent an email acknowledging my request and promptly sent out the replacement. I would recommend them to anyone.

Again, I just recently ordered their Japanese Iris collection and three of the Shogun Japanese iris. These arrive about a week ago 9/5/09 and were exceptional with about two inches of green leaves and a six inch root system on each plant. I had ordered Japanese iris from other companies in the past and each time I received them dead and the companies wouldn't replace them. I am well pleased with my long association with Gurneys. Keep up the good work.

I've never ordered hardware products from Gurney's so comments only relate to seeds and plants. First of all one needs to understand than Gurney's sells most of their plants at very low prices, in my opinion they are so low that one should not expect most of the transplants to be equal to some of their high priced competitors. If a person understands that about Gurney's live nursery stock, then some very nice bargains can be found. Sometimes I want the best well rooted nursery stock available. On those times I don't buy from Gurney's. Other times I'm happy to get a relatively small sprig of a plant, place it in a nursery pot, and let it grow for a year or two before tranferring the plant to the gound. I have been quite pleased with such inexpensive plants purchased from Gurney's. The plants almost always live, and eventually end up thriving. For my uses, Gurney's seeds are second to none, as long as one is happy with older, proven varieties which have mostly been around for a while. Those suit my needs so Gurney's supplies almost all of my vegetable seeds each year. This past year I bought several bunches of strawberry plants and raspberry plants. Once again they were not equal to more expensive vendors, but most of the plants have grown and thrived, and next year there will be no difference between having bought the plants from Gurney's or having bought them from a more prominant vendor. So I have to give Gurney's an A+ for providing lots of very reasonably priced nursery stock to shoppers who understand and appreciate what they are actually buying from the company.

I have probably ordered from Gurney's every year for the past six to ten years, and fully intend to continue ordering both seeds and some nursery stock from them. I generally order early in the season when Gurney's offers a $25 discount on a $50 order. That price is almost obscene as the prices are so low to start.

Last year I ordered 75 stawberry plants, six raspberry plants of two varieties, and all of my seeds for ordinary vegetable varieties. All have grown extremely well, with lots of fresh strawberries even though only planted this spring, and with a bountiful raspberry harvest this fall. Of course my seeds from Gurney's performed well just as they do every season.

Have done business with Gurney's (Henry Field's as well) now for six years. I've ordered plants and seeds with typically good results. When things have not done well, I have always been able to get resolution to my satisfaction. Only one time was it necessary to ask the CSR to connect me to their supervisor, but the situation was resolved on that call. The $25 certificate is what got me started and helps every year. I had bad luck with one of Dave's highly rated companies and couldn't get even an email response. Good customer service and excellent products from Gurney's has been what I've found.

I ordered several times this season. most orders were fine, simple transactions and reasonable shipping time. everything was as described.

one order, for two clearance priced (and cannot find elsewhere!) fruit trees did become a bit of a comedy of errors. they could not ship a Honeysweet pear, they were out of stock. to their credit they did not just substitute. after a couple weeks I emailed asking for a refund.
this went on for two months, but each time a different customer service rep DID respond very quickly, and promise to forward to billing. but this was just not happening.

finally they had an end of season clearance, and I emailed asking in lieu of refund, just ship me a Bartlett pear (which was on sale for approximately what I had paid for the Honeysweet). after several back and forths regarding possible amount I might owe (I refused to pay anything, actually) this was agreed upon, and they shipped an ENORMOUS caliper semi dwarf (more expensive) Bartlett pear, who is leafing out nicely. because they'd run out of the cheaper standard Bartlett pear trees.

I definately will continue to do business with Gurney's. I am of fixed income, and I have to order what I can, at sizes and prices I can afford. each year I deal with all the "disreputable" nurseries, and have found that with patience I get what I ordered, or replacements, and they do fine.
