I ordered the minimum for my zip code, which was 5. A NHR, a golden buff; bith for a friend, a snowy white easter egger, an olive egger, and a black copper marans. All 5 showed up the date they were supposed to happy and healthy. They are a month old now still no problems! I am so happy with ny order that I have placed another 5 bird order for next month, and a 6 bird order for next week! I will update as time goes on, but I would be happy to recommend MPC to my friends and family in the future. Honestly, aside from trying out mcmurray because I love the name, I probably will not buy chicks from any other hatchery unless I spring for the ayam cemani out of sheer curiosity, due to MPC not having that breed. All in all My Pet Chicken has done well by me so far. We will see what things look like come egg laying time!

I received chicks from MPC and all arrived very quickly, healthy and vigorous. I had 1 chick which showed a cross beak at 2 weeks old. I called and they refunded it no questions asked and even gave me great advise on how to care for it -since culling was not an option for me. I have spoken with customer service several time and they have always been amazingly helpful and very nice folks! I did get a chick in my polish chick order that appears to be solid black and may be a crevecours and I called and they asked if I was unhappy with the chick because they want me to be happy and they would refund it. I advised no I was not. I tell you that I would/will order from them again and I love their customer service people!!

I have ordered from this company only once, but I would not hesitate to order from it again. I ordered 11 chicks: multiples of three heritage breeds and four Easter Eggers. I chose My Pet Chicken because the company guarantees sexing and early health. The chicks seemed fine upon arrival, but one kept its wings slightly open. When this went on for several days, I called. The woman I spoke with at the company was highly knowledgeable, and she seemed to care. The chicken was stressed, likely by the trip, and it is a condition that is quite serious. She gave me very precise instructions on what to do. I took her name down so as to be able to talk to her in particular again, and I very much appreciated being able to talk to someone who loves chickens as much as I do. The chick didn't make it, but that's because I started on the remedy too late. I had never encountered stress in a chick and did not recognize the signs or know the treatment. The company refunded what I had paid for the chick, including the shot to prevent Marek's disease. I am not a novice; some of my adult hens have simply gotten too old to lay (chickens are born with all the eggs they will ever lay, and I do not "cull" my retired girls). Nor am I a backyard chicken keeper. I own a large no-kill farm and strongly oppose the cruelty inherent in the various food industries. The point of having as many hens as I do is to wean people in my small rural area off eggs produced in miserable conditions, and to do it by keeping my prices for free-range country eggs competitive with the price of inferior eggs at the grocery store. Plus I enjoy my chickens. I say all of this to explain why I do not like dealing with sellers of animals who sound like they eat nails, washed down with lemon juice, for breakfast. The name of the company, with the word "pet" present, is not just a trendy affectation--or at least it is not so to the people who work there. For someone of my type, My Pet Chicken is a very good option, and its various guarantees suit my purposes.

I have ordered twice from My Pet Chicken. The first was four years ago and I got 8 chicks, all healthy and happy and they thrived. I ordered again recently and received my chicks on Tuesday. I had originally ordered 6 but another breed I wanted became available and they added to my order (and did not charge me even though it is stated on the order form that they charge you five dollars for changes). The two ladies I spoke with could not have been kinder or more helpful. My now seven chicks arrived healthy and are growing like crazy. I will absolutely order from then again.

I have ordered from my pet chicken twice now and I have nothing but positive things to say. I have ordered several breeds through them including sex links, easter eggers, black austrolorps, barred rocks, welsummers, and leghorns. They have all arrived healthy and happy. No problems at all :)

I ordered my minimum, six chicks. I only wanted the Blue Fava's so I ordered three Golden Marans for filler, which I gave away. Although I was told it might take up to three days to receive my chicks because I live in a small, outlying hamlet, they left Monday at 4:00 p.m. and I picked them up at noon on Tuesday. All six were thriving and active. Put them in a large cardboard box with a heat lamp, water and food by 1:00 p.m. They ate like it was going out of style. Figured out the waterer quickly too. I watched them and saw that they were roaming freely around the box. Not staying huddled under the light, not trying to avoid it. They're five days old now and doing just wonderfully. They've even attempted to eat some minced celery leaves and grass. MPC's customer service is exemplary. They are the standard by which all other companies, chicken related or not, should strive. They answered all my questions and directed me to some very helpful information on their website. I could not have been more pleased all the way around. I was actually surprised all the chicks arrived so sound. My experience has been that the United States Post Office is the biggest rip off ever. Handlers DO NOT CARE if a package is marked "urgent" or "fragile" or "antique glass" or anything. I buy a lot of antique glass on Ebay and I rarely receive a package through the USPS that has not suffered some form of damage from their hands. I spend more time filing insurance claims than any other activity in my life. And considering the fact we're dealing with Mother Nature here, I'm wholly impressed with MPC. Keep up the great work and look for more business from me!

Our first experience with chickens and mypetchicken has been wonderful. Our chicks arrived healthy and alive with 7 chicks total they have answered all my customer service questions so far. I have already recommended them to friends. And I will definitely be using them again in the future.

First time purchasing chicks via mail (25 female). Two-day arrival time as expected, all alive, no pasty butts. Pleasantly surprised that an extra chick was given, intentionally. Little did BYC know that THAT extra chick gives me an even 50 chickens in my flock. My family knows I like symmetry, so that was a hoot to get that extra chick giving me 50 chickens total vs 49 :) I would not hesitate to do business with BYC again, and PLAN on doing so next Spring, God willing. :) Keep up the good work!

Since I had placed my order late, I had off and on misgivings. I knew they would arrive in the heat of the summer and was afraid that the post office would not treat them well. My local post office which is more rural was great to work with. And the chicks arrived and they were safe and sound. I had one little girl that was weak and she just couldn't recover and for any pet or animal lover it is hard losing one. However, the remaining chicks are active and funny and animated. I love them all and look forward to painting them in my watercolors. I have had chickens for about 7 years and have been so pleased that I could order female bantams. Thank you My Pet Chicken, you have been great to work with and I look forward to my chicks maturing into hens and roosters!

I've ordered chicks twice from my pet chicken. This was in the spring of 2012. I ordered 8 and 5 arrived dead. Someone didn't tape down the heat back inside the box. So, it banged around killing the chicks during the shipment. I got 5 replacements 2 months later when the same breed was available again. Guess what they sent me all roosters! I had specified all females. I gave up on ordering chicks with them. Anyone with a dead on arrival or arriving and dying later should look for a LOCAL hatchery near your home where you can pick out your chicks AND get them home safely. #2 I ordered the TEAL colored egg boxes (paper pulp) recently- July 2014. They sent me these really ugly color SLATE BLUE color boxes. I had designed and printed labels to coordinate with the "Teal" color. It was a BIG pain in the ass getting replacements. They didn't have the Teal, but they didn't have pink, green or any other pastel shade either! So I got the flat top ordinary color boxes. They wouldn't give me an RA with the shipping paid for. I had to pay 11.00 for shipping. I won't be ordering egg boxes from them again. So, I won't be ordering chicks OR egg boxes from MPC! #3 I got one of those "No Crow" collars. It arrived with NO instructions. I had to go to the website for them. Well, my roo pulled the darn thing off. He got his toe caught in it -pulling it up to his head. He was nearly choking. I had the collar on him all that day. Good thing he was roosting inside my house so I could watch out for him. The instructions say to adjust it loosly till the roo gets used to it. All day he was pulling at it and annoyed by it. The 2nd day I tightened it but he made such a fuss scratching at it with his foot that I removed it after a few hours. Maybe this thing "works" under certain circumstances. WARNING- IF YOU BUY THIS THING WATCH YOUR ROO CONSTANTLY! He could very easily die trying to get it off especially if he manages to get his foot hooked into the stupid thing and falls over. DO NOT let him wander off out of your observation area. If you see that he just doesn't get used to the thing and tries to pull it off. TAKE it off before he chokes himself to death. Remove the collar at night. This collar has MESH on it and a toenail can easily get caught. The bird will panic. Maybe fall down. And maybe pull it up to his head and choke. This is a brand new product that just came out last week. P.S. You can probably make your own No-Crow collar for less than the 17 bucks they cost. It needs to have a break-free emergency. Maybe some roosters wouldn't be bothered by it- mine wasn't one. 2 of my friends bought it. Maybe I'll report their experiences later.

I ordered 6 chick for my pet chicken, they arrived the very next day after hatching, all were alive but one was weak and stress from the travel. I emailed my pet chicken for advice and got a response with in a couple hours, Alex gave me several different things to help boots the baby and by that evening she was much better and the next day she was in perfect health. Now @ 5 weeks old they are healthy, happy, and beautiful. Although I am bummed about my Salmon faverolles she is very poorly colored, not at all what I was expecting. I was wondering if she could be a he for a while but experts have told me that she is a she, just a poorly colored pullet and will always have black in her chest and beard and that her body may lighten up after the juvenile molt. I still love her and think she is pretty in her own way, but not up to breed standard. All the rest are looking good, very friendly and so much fun! I am new to chickens so I am hoping all are pullet not too confident in my sexing skills, but we will see in 5 more weeks :) I would buy from my pet chicken again I am over all very please with my experience! They have a great variety to choose from and a breed selector tool which I thought was cool and help full in my selection process.

I had ordered 7 silver-laced Wyandotte day-old chicks 2 weeks ago~they arrived 2 days later but 5 chicks had died. Unfortunately the carrier had to deliver to Albuquerque, NM hub and chicks stayed there overnight and then were delivered to rural P.O. the next morning. Who knows what happened? I reported the dead chicks to 'My Pet Chicken'. The reps on the phone are always so sweet and accommodating. They issued a refund and I immediately ordered 9 more chicks in case some didn't survive. Well, MPC outdid themselves. The chicks went out on a Monday and to my surprise I got them mid-morning the next day~All the chicks not only survived but were in excellent condition and thriving! They are going on 4 days old and are very healthy~I am more than pleased with the excellent customer service and will order any more chicks from this company~A+

I ordered 4 female chicks of different breeds from My Pet Chicken. They arrived healthy on Wednesday (2 days after they hatched and shipped - I live in Anaheim, CA), and are now 8 weeks old. They may not be bred to the SOP (what hatchery chicks are?), but for our small backyard flock, they are perfect. They are friendly and easy to handle, healthy, and beautiful to look at. Unless a rooster pops out of the bunch, we received exactly what we ordered. I have also ordered a coop from My Pet Chicken. They were quick to replace a part that was damaged in shipping. The coop is of mediocre sturdiness, but it is aesthetically pleasing and fills our needs perfectly well. The other items I've ordered from MPC (brooder kit, organic chick feed, chick grit, chicken treat ball, chicken fountain, etc) have arrived undamaged and in a timely fashion. I also really, really loved reading the My Pet Chicken Handbook - it was a great introduction to this avian world!

My experience with mypetchicken.com was wonderful on every level. I am brand new to chickens, and had many pre-order questions which were all responded to quickly & in an easy to understand manner. My after order arrived question was answered in like kind. I also made a few changes to my order after it was processed, and their customer service was very graceful and helpful. My babies arrived the day after shipped to me in excellent condition. I was expecting them to be traumatized by shipping; probably shy and panicky. What I got were five spunky, confident, and even affectionate brand new chicks who immediately drank water without my guidance, and came running to peck at their food when my son started tapping it with his fingertip. Once they ate & drank, I place my hand in the brooder and 4 out of the 5 came to check it out. 2 of them even hopped into it! Even the one who started out the most hesitant is now eager to hop into my hand just after one day of being home with us. No health issues, and awesome personalities. I would highly recommend this company for any beginner backyard flocker!

I mail ordered day old chicks a few years ago from another company with disastrous results but decided to try again, but this time with My Pet Chicken. I ordered two each of six varieties of hens, a dozen in total. We had originally ordered 8 but added 2 more in January and 2 just a couple weeks ago. The order was shipped on Monday and arrived at my post office at noon the next day. All 12 chicks arrived alive and in great shape. All 12 appear to be the correct type as well. I had no problems at all making the changes to the order and everyone who I spoke with along the way was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I couldn't be happier with their service and quality. I will definitely do business with MPC again. Jonathan

I am new to flock tending. I ordered 7 chicks, all different breeds, in January 2014 from MPC for delivery in June. I was very pleased to find a site where I could pick my breeds and order a small number of chicks to start. I got a call on Hatch Day informing me that 2 of my selections hadn't hatched. The woman who called was informative and patient helping me decide on replacements. Seven babies shipped midmorning on Monday. All 7 arrived safely in barely 24 hours. (Kudos to USPS on their role!) One appeared a bit more stressed than the others by the trip and spent more time than others under the warming plate at first, but a week in, all are growing at an amazing pace and seem to be happy and healthy. As a newbie, I very much appreciated the help available on line from MPC: info on breed selection, on new chick care (including checking for and dealing with pasty butt. One chick had it one time, and the short soak followed by hair drying worked fine), how to prepare for the chicks arrival, etc. I will definitely be ordering from MPC again in the future.

Dear My Pet Chicken, I just wanted to thank you for my wonderful shipment of chicks. I have to commend both you and my local Post Office for being so professional and efficient. My Chicks arrived the next day at the sorting plant here in Wareham, MA and I first found out that I'd have to wait an additional day to get them. However, a Postal employee was thoughtful enough to drive them to my Post Office so that I could pick them up. They arrived both healthy and very strong. I was also amazed that you were able to come through with providing me with the 6 different breeds that I requested. They will be a nice addition to the 8 twelve week old pullets I currently have. Look forward to doing business with your company in the future. Sincerely, Steve Amaral. Wareham, Massachusetts

I first did business with My Pet Chicken in 2010. I ordered 6 chicks. 3 Black Copper Marans and 3 Easter Eggers. That was the first year they had Black Copper Marans and I was thrilled I was able to get these rare chickens since they all sold out. They have since grown up to be lovely healthy fun pet chickens. This year I ordered 6 more babies and all arrived happy and healthy. I got a more mixed flock and am looking forward to introducing them once they are older. Right now it's nice to have baby birds again. All hens have been healthy and I am very pleased and recommend this company. I have also ordered things like fake eggs and egg baskets from them and also been pleased. So yes, I love buying from My Pet Chicken and recommend them.

I received my ten (10) baby chicks yesterday and they all made it alive! No pasty butt or anything...I was so excited to get them home and check each one out to make sure they were all okay. I introduced them to the water and just like your e-book stated they took right to drinking...then they were introduced to their feed and started gobbling it up as well. By that evening they were eating out of my hands. I'm so happy with my little ladies (hope they are all ladies) and I'm looking forward to watching their continual growth. Thank you so much for all your help...from the buying process all the way through the new homing (mailing) process! I really appreciate you!

Posted on May 7, 2014, updated May 7, 2014 My first shipment of chicks (n=6) all came dead :( At first the costumer care was terrible (endless phone wait, the person on phone could not answer any questions), but then a very competent person called me back and prepared my re-shipment (I was very happy with that!). Two weeks later I received a new order which should have been 6 chicks (not exactly the same breeds but close). However only 5 were included (all alive!); unfortunately my most wanted one was missing (a white silkie). It seems that they just forgot to add it. I'm now talking to costumer service to decide if I want to place a larger order and reship (can't ship a single chick minimum of 5 if one is bantam) or receive reimbursement for this one... So I'm not terribly pleased with the shipment issues these two times and costumer care has been a mix of very bad and excellent. On the bright side they have a live guarantee and will reship (it is however sad that so many died, the box is not that well insulated, just cardboard with holes, but maybe that is how all sites ship?). Hopefully my new batch will all survive...

I am a new chicken keeper. Found the MPC website and devoured all the really useful information there. I ordered 10 chicks of 4 different breeds and my order was filled exactly as I had placed it. My email notifying me of the shipping was on the date promised. My chicks arrived at the Post Office less than 24 hours later. I was excited!!! One little one did not make it. The other nine were peeping happily. When I got them out of the box I noticed one seemed a bit weak and shaky on its feet. I called MPC right away, they offered to credit my account, and they made some suggestions and were very reassuring. I did what they suggested (used some sugar water) and the next morning the little one seemed improved. If watching them every hour makes them stronger, they will be the strongest chicks alive. I have had 4 of them with pasting up problems. I learned pretty fast that holding them on their backs while cleaning them seems to calm them. They also don't seem to mind the hairdryer on a low mildly warm setting. They stand still for a while when put back into the brooder but are happily darting about pretty soon. I have talked to three different people on the call-in line for MPC and everyone has been delightful to talk to. They are clearly chicken enthusiasts. Thank you to everyone there. PS My 2 year old granddaughter was here today to see the 6 day old chicks. She loves them too.

Posted on August 23, 2013, updated May 4, 2014 Posted on April 11, 2013, updated August 23, 2013 We've ordered from My Pet Chicken twice (2012 and 2013). Last year 6/6 chicks were sexed correctly and thrived; 1 pullet died at month eight. This year we ordered 14 chicks (only 12 for us). One chick was DOA, a second was ailing on arrival but survived, a third chick was ailing and appears to not be thriving, and a fourth chick died suddenly overnight. So, we are at 10 of 12 chicks surviving with 1 failing to thrive--I hope that the remaining group was sexed correctly! The last 2 are at another home and doing fine. While I am not happy with those numbers, I am very pleased to not receive an all DOA box! My Pet Chicken makes ordering a variety of chicks quickly and easily possible. Order early for the best selection; we ordered in Nov 2012 for April 2013 delivery. Order carefully as changes are expensive. Customer service is quick and responsive. Chick prices are par for the course while shipping is a bit pricey as orders of less than 14 chicks are shipped via USPS Express Mail. While I would like to support a small farm and order straight run, I just don't want to be in the chicken selling business. Overall, I recommend MPC with reservations to city flocksters.

On August 23rd, 2013, gardensoiree changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following: 2013 order update: We lost another chick (failed to thrive) and one chick turned out to be a male. So, overall this year we are at 8/12. Not too bad all things considered. MPC did refund for our losses albeit after some frustration with long wait times on the telephone; lots of growth and customers but not enough folks to answer the phones?! Either way MPC issued a refund for the chicks (including the mis-sexed one--some vendors don't do this unless they failed to sex 90% correctly). MPC seems to be leading the pack because a) lots of information on the website; which is great if you are new to raising chickens, b) easy to navigate site, c) easy to navigate calendar of availability, and d) straight-forward pricing structure, and e) DOA, mis-sexing refunds. This years birds have just starting laying and all are thriving. While there are flaws if you are looking for show birds, they are all fun to watch and hopefully all will be great producers. If you are a City Flockster, MPC can be a solid choice.
On May 4th, 2014, gardensoiree added the following: Well, for the 3rd straight year we ordered sexed chicks from My Pet Chicken. One huge improvement that MPC made for this year was to allow folks to pay for Express Mail if the order was 15+ chicks rather than limiting shipping to Priority. Again, it seems lots of growth of MPC means long phone wait times and such but if you want to start a small flock of sexed chicks, MPC gets the job done. This year we ordered in November 2013 for April 2014 and sadly on hatch day two of the breeds we ordered were not available due to a "bad hatch"; this news came on the heels of MPC informing me the day before that hatches had been terrific!? But, MPC did the best they could and offered the choice of a refund, substitute chicks, or another shipping date…of course we were all set up and waiting for the birds to ship and arrive so we opted for substitute chicks. 15/16 chicks arrived happy and peeping. One died shortly after arrival and a second died two days later. MPC took care of refunding for the two chicks within the 48-hour rule without too much hassle. If you are not sure if MPC is for you, here are some things to consider: the overall quality of the birds is terrific for backyard layers, the prices and ability to select only a few birds is a huge bonus unless you want to be in the chicken selling business, sexed birds is again a bonus unless you want to manage the cockerels from a straight run (so far we have only had one mis-sexed bird), MPC offers plenty of online, email, and phone support, and the selection of breeds allows you to try several or just one breed. While I don't think that I will always order from MPC, I have been pleased with our experiences overall and if you are starting an urban flock, I think that they are a terrific option.

I've ordered several shipments of chicks from MPC, and have been consistently pleased with their service and their chicks. When I've had a problem, they've helped me quickly and efficiently, doing everything in their power to make it right, and thanks to them, I've been able to add several breeds to my flock that would otherwise not have been accessible to me. Furthermore, their chicks are excellent stock. While I can't vouch for show quality since I'm not experienced in that area, they are healthy, alert, and beautiful birds, and have been earning their keep with eggs, photo ops, and "chicken therapy" time. I have been very pleased and will definitely be ordering from them again.

ordered three buff orps and three red stars. All six arrived on time in good condition and after three weeks are all well and doing just fantastic. Great specimens! Better than I expected from a hatchery (everyone talks so much about how much better 'breeder' birds are - while there may be some truth to that on some breeds and with some hatcheries it is not the case on these two breeds from this 'MPC' hatchery). I also received some excellent Langshans from them a few months ago - did have a single loss in that shipment but was otherwise also a very good experience too and those chickens are very hardy solid birds now approaching six months of age. Good additions to the flock. I would hesitate to work with anyone else after having had such great experiences with this MPC hatchery this year. I also see a few rare people with minor complaints but I truly believe sometimes there is just no pleasing some customers. It is usually partly in some way the buyers unrealistic expectations and likely out of the control of the hatchery such as post office problems that cause most of these unhappy people. Just sharing my two cents. I believe if you want good birds and try to stick to breeds others have reported as "good ones from this seller" like in my case Buff Orps, Red Stars, Langshans and temper your expectations to the realm of reality (shipping brand newly born baby birds! getting all six alive is like a miracle!) you should likely be VERY pleased with this seller.

What a great experience for my first time ordering from MyPetChicken. The babies arrived in less than 24 hours. When I got to the post office to pick them up, I could hear them protesting as soon as I opened the door. I steeled myself while opening the box just in case as their instructions warned that one or more may not have made the trip. Not only were they all fine, they were feisty and had lots to say!!! As soon as I put them in the brooder they started eating the starter and without even having to be shown one after another started using the nipple water bottles. I am so thankful for their wonderful online instructions, I was prepared for their arrival and was able to assess each chick's health and provide the best possible care for them. Now, 5 days later, they are doing great. I am so thankful that I chose to use MyPetChicken at //www.mypetchicken.com for my new babies.

I immediately contacted my pet chicken they gave me advise she survived and all 10 are still alive and well at 8 weeks old. I had contacted my pet chicken several times before they arrived with questions on shipping, substitutions and they always responded promptly. I definitely would order chicks from them again.

I am brand new to the chicken raising business and I rarely write reviews or follow up emails to businesses but I am having so much fun at this that I sent an unusual (for me) thank you email to mypetchicken and am writing this. I used mypetchicken.com to: 1. Read up on pretty much everything I needed to know about the enterprise; 2. Order plans for a coop; 3. Order supplies for the brooder; and 4. Order my 4 little peeps—all different breeds. I am highly organized so the coop was built and the brooder and all ancillary materials were on hand and ready to go long before my chicks arrived peeping in their package at the post office. All 4 were hale and hearty and the right breed (whether they are the right gender remains to be seen, but I am optimistic) and took to eating and drinking within the first hour. They’ve been happily cheeping and thriving since—no special care needed. Mypetchicken sent a number of informational emails, both at the time of purchase and subsequent to the chicks’ arrival. They made the whole seemingly daunting process extremely easy. I have so many friends now who swear they are going to start their own urban egg productions after seeing mine. Thank you, Mypetchicken.

My daughter and I are first time backyard chicken enthusiasts and have read and talked to folks who have gone before us. We decided to order from you because of the details of how you care and package the day old chicks to ensure, to the best of your ability, their comfort and survival during the shipping process. I also called your 1-800 number when my chicks did not arrive the next morning. The person I spoke with was personable and obviously involved with chickens, not someone randomly hired. She explained that the chicks weren't due until the next morning; how the shipping process worked for live mail compared to regular express mail and then said she didn't want me to be a "worried moma" but was so reassured that their chicks were going to a home that was so concerned about their welfare. I was reassured and so happy even though 5 minutes before I was sure this was going to be a disaster. Three little chicks arrived, as she said, the next morning, warm and well and it's been love ever since. Thank you so much for helping us start our mini flock of pets that will give us eggs so we can stop supporting the inhumane chicken/egg farming business in this country.

Very pleasant to talk to and easy to order from. Second time I have ordered from My Pet Chicken. 12 baby chicks arrived this morning. 10 are doing fine, 1 (cuckoo maran) died, and 1 orphington is hanging on. 10 out of 12 is good, even though I hate to lose any. The chicks were shipped yesterday and arrived the next day. The post office called me early this morning to let me know they were there. Very happy with My Pet Chicken's chicks and service. (2 buff silkies, 2 buff orpington, 2 columbian wyandotte, 2 cuckoo marans, 1 easter egger, 2 speckled sussex, and 1 welsummer were delivered today as ordered).

I ordered 15 dorkings in Decmeber. The day they were to ship, I got a call saying they didn't have my order ready. That "my" dorkings didn't hatch. So after some run around I find out that 2 hens and 4 roosters are available. The woman tells me that there is no waiting list, so if the ones that were slated for my shipment do not hatch, but the batch the next day do, I am just out of luck, those go to the next person. So I ask that what they have be sent and I substitute the rest with 6 other layers. The woman on the phone says certain subs are available, even though the website says something else. She calls the hatchery and finds out that yes, the ones I want are available. At this point I am already very unhappy with MPC. The chicks arrive and the Dorkings are weak, small, and can hardly stand. The other 6 are fine. As I always do, I give them sugar water and check on them every 30 minutes. Within the first 24 hours 2 Dorkings are dead. The next day the third one dies. So out of 6 Dorking, 3 are dead. When I call MPC, I am told to give sugar water and make sure the temp is correct. I have 2 thermometers going to be sure of the temp. I think the ones I received were the runts of the hatch that they just shipped them even though they were in bad shape. They said it was "stress", but they seemed to have something neurologically wrong with them. They couldn't stand well and tipped forward when they tried to move and would shake like they had Parkinson's. After repeated calls, they offered to refund the cost of the chicks, not the shipping. I am still trying to get a refund for the diffence in the original order and the changed one...a month later! It's not that anyone was rude, just that no one seemed to have follow through. And it was very, very hard to get anyone on the phone. Because of the poor quality of the chicks, the lack of a waiting list, and the extra time it has taken to resolve all the problems, I will never order from here again. With the hatchery for my meat birds, if I have a big loss for no reason, they refund the cost of the chicks and shipping. And I have never had more than a 4-6% loss with our chicks. Even ones shipped in the heat of the summer. A 25% loss is not acceptable.

I had a great experience! My husband and I ordered a set of Dominique day-old chicks but they won't be ready to ship for several more weeks so we ordered 5 "mystery" chicks for fun, and as a test run to make sure we have everything set up and happy for our main order. All 5 chicks arrived healthy, active, and chirping, though one chick seemed to be ailing a bit after awhile. It took more frequent naps than the others and slept in awkward positions that I've only seen dead birds in. I emailed the company and they sent back a very friendly email expressing concern for my chick and some tips on caring for a sick bird. I was already doing much of what they suggested and she has since perked up and has been eating and drinking like the others, though she still naps more. However, she is the only one of her breed and is the smallest of the group, so this may simply be a breed/personality quirk. When my Dominiques arrive, I will submit another review and update on my original shipment. Two quick notes, though. 1) I did not receive my "shipped" email until an hour after picking my birds up from the post office, so I did not have everything ready to go when I brought them home. This was quickly rectified as it was within the anticipated delivery window from when I initially submitted my order, but I still would have appreciated knowing they had shipped because I would have given baby chick prep work a higher priority (and maybe avoided the one getting sick...). 2) One reviewer posted that he had ailing chicks in his order and when he contacted MPC they replied back with feeding instructions. I would like to know what he expected them to do. They aren't going to refund for a bird that may simply be stressed and will recover fully, nor can they diagnose and/or dispense medications or something via email. I applaud them for sending him tips that may prove helpful in aiding the chick's recovery, regardless of whether the tips were helpful to him or not. They have no idea which customers know how to handle sick birds and which do not, and I appreciate the tips as a "just in case they are useful" measure.

We are complete chicken neophytes, but educated ourselves as much as possible before making the decision to start our own little flock. MPC's website had a wealth of information to help us, and our entire experience with them has been positive. Our 6 peeps (2 RI Reds, 2 Barred Plymouth Rocks, 2 Golden-Laced Wyandottes) were shipped on the date promised, in our hands barely 24 hours later, and all were healthy. We have only had them for 48 hours now, but all are still doing very well, eating, drinking and lively as can be. (And too cute for words!) I would definitely order from MPC again, for chicks as well as the many other great related products they offer.

Well, we received our little Buff Orpingtons yesterday. We were called by the Post Office at 8:40AM and agreed to go right down. When we got there we were surprised that there were no clients waiting in the Post Office, never saw that before. We got to the counter and told the gal that we were there to pick up our chicks. She shouted out back and then we started hearing the peepers getting louder as they brought the shipping box out. We have 10 Hens and one Rooster, all like two days old. We opened the box on the way home and there were all these little fluff balls peeping away. We got them home and put them in their "MyPetChicken" baby chick starter kit which made their transition easy as pie. Debbie did the bottompoopcheck and they all crowed around the feeder like they had been trained already. I wiggled my finger in the the watering tray and a couple of them came right over to the sound of the water. It's day two now and they're just all over the place, zipping back and forth, bumping into one another, the walls, the thermometer and the feeder. They climb over each other and wander around and then zip across their pen. They're hilarious. Shannon was terrific in getting our chicks out a day earlier than promised, what a delightful person. She's a chicken raiser and has the answer to all of our questions. We're so delighted to have our little people in our garage. We have a chicken coop ready for them and we've named everybody already. I'll post again as time passes. I tried to take a couple of pic's but the pic's turned out red from the lamp. I'll see if I can switch lamps to incandescent just to take some shots. It looks to me like they've already gotten bigger after just one day on the Chick feed that came with the kit. Thanks MPC you guys are great. PS I can't imagine what went wrong with the couple of negative stories I've read. I guess you can't deliver thousands of chicks completely without error or maybe it's just the clients karma when chicks die repetitively. Oh well, I wish them luck, so far for us everything is perfect. Ken & Debbie

To all at MPC who helped us with our buff orpington pullet order... YAY! You did it! Our 7 beautiful golden girls arrived at our postal facility at 6:45 am this morning. I was already wide awake when we received our call from the mail center. My husband picked them up on his lunch break at 12:45 pm and brought them home, and then took a 2-hour lunch to get them settled in – in the back of our garage which has been converted to an indoor living area for them, complete with wood chips on the floor, interesting nooks and crannies to explore and roosting shelves, when they are ready to become vertical. They are in great shape – eating and drinking with great gusto and acting like they are enjoying themselves. My Love's face lights up with a special smile when he goes out to see his girls. We want to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for all you did to get these girls to us. They are giving us great pleasure. We are still noodling around on some names, and will write again when we have that figured out.

Ordered from MPC for the first time, ordered in November 12 for April 13 shipping. I wanted to get 6 chicks of specific breeds for "brooders". All 6 arrived alive, however, one little girl was a bit lethargic and her one eye seemed "glued" closed. I immediately let MPC know and they were prompt with advice and support. The lethargic baby is now doing well. All seem lively and healthy and appear to be doing well. I think the one was just a bit stressed from shipping. Shipping live day olds can be a tricky business. Over all, I would consider ordering from MPC again to make additions of specific breeds for my flock.

My experience with this company was a nightmare. In 2011, I ordered ten Silkie bantams. All arrived alive but the colors were sorted completely wrong. If they can't sort Silkies by color I don't understand why they offer that choice on their website. Only three made it to their first birthday, and that doesn't involve predators. They just kept dropping dead on me. Vet couldn't find anything wrong with them, and none of the symptoms fit any of the typical poultry diseases. They were my first chickens and lived in a brand new coop. The symptoms were: hen is healthy and active, then hen drops dead in coop without a mark, rest of flock unaffected. They were penned and did not have access to mushrooms or any poisons. In late 2011, pre-ordered several rare breeds at midnight on December 1, because I wanted to be sure I got some of the ones that sell out quickly (marans, especially). My order was slated for arrival in late March. I was looking forward to having a large flock of chickens again. Well, all fifteen arrived dead. And not freshly dead, either. It was heartbreaking. Both my post lady and myself were crying. It was the first time I had ever picked up a box of dead birds. I tried to arrange for a replacement shipment but of course, it being March, they were sold out of almost everything. The woman on the phone was very unhelpful. I settled for a "exotic assortment." MPC did refund the cost of the dead chicks but I had to call back and specifically request that my original shipping cost be refunded as well (it states on the website that this is policy, but it was not offered to me until I pointed that out). My exotic assortment arrived 14/15 alive, but over the next five days I lost five more chicks. Their Salmon Faverolles especially seem to be very weak. They were not pasting up or acting strange at all. They would be running around with the other chicks and then be dead in the morning. Trying to figure out what was included in the assortment was maddening. Many of the breeds I got were not listed as possibilities on the website. I lost a lot of my hens just before they reached POL (point of lay) to the same mystery problems that plagued my Silkies (see above), meaning that they just dropped dead. The exotic assortment is not something I would recommend because they are about as tame as wild pheasants, and it makes doing any maintenance in/around the coop very unpleasant because they panic very, very easily. I can understand why they are unpopular/rare breeds. I will not order from MPC again. I am not sure what is going on with their birds but the birds I have from breeders and other hatcheries thrive while I have exactly one MPC bird left out of my 2011 order of 10, and three MPC birds left out of my 2012 order of 15. I hardly got eggs out of any of them and it really feels like I just threw my money away.

Posted on March 15, 2013, updated March 19, 2013 I ordered 10 asst. silkies and 5 mille fleur but ordered them for the wrong date, i called and had to change the date and change my order to 15 asst. featherfooted bantams which I didnt have a problem with since i was getting great customer service and dealing with very friendly people. I did lose 5 of the chicks, 3 came dead and 2 died within the next two days. I left a message last night and was called this morning and had the losses credited to my card. I would have this review as positive just because of the great customer service I recieved but the shipping is what didnt sit right. After paying $30 ish for shipping express mail, it was disapointing watching them arrive in Fargo at 10 am and sit there untill 1 am the next day. With my order from murray mcmurray they were sent priority mail and arrived in the same amount of time. So my main complaint is with the postal service rather than My Pet Chicken. Great Customer service tho. I do believe some of the blame is on myself for ordering 15 bantams when it is still rather early in the year. Will update in the future.

On March 19th, 2013, Lstein changed the rating from neutral to negative and added the following: My chicks from My Pet Chicken would have been one week old tomorrow, sadly all but 1 have died while my batch from McMurray are thriving. Conditions are exactly the same for both groups and i followed all advice.....they just dont have any spunk, even with sugar water and some soupy food mixture along with their normal food. While the customer service at this hatchery was great when ordering and dealing with, I will not be ordering from them again anytime soon.

I ordered 15 chicks from mypetchicken they sent 16. I am sad to say only 15 made it alive. I was refunded for the 1 bird that didnt make it with no questions asked. I only ordered 15 though so I still have the correct number of birds, but I ordered 5 specific breeds and the one that was d.o.a. was in that mix. I also ordered 5 assorted rare breeds and 5 assorted brown egg layers. I think i have at least 10 different types of hens now. It has been three weeks and all 15 are so full of energy they are already trying to fly the inside coop!!!! I am in the process of making another order for 25 more chick/hens. I will have over 30 breeds come July. Shipping was flat rate. I placed my order on a Monday and it was received at my post office Wednsday morning. I had my birds at home in the brooder by 9:30 am, and i was told the birds would not arrive until thursday/friday. I was really happy with how fast they actually shipped. MyPetChicken is the best as far as what my research and experience has proven. Best variety. Best customer service. Best website for chickens ever. no matter what you need.

24 Assorted Orpington Hatching Eggs sent 3 weeks after my original ship date. I received shipping email AFTER I had already received my eggs. All Blue/Splash were true infertiles (did a breakout analysis of clear eggs), all Lavender were rotten with already forming embryos. The air cells were rather large, indicating they weren't fresh (only took 24 hours once shipped). Only 5 Buff Orpingtons hatched -one with abnormal toes, one with deformed wings, and all abnormally huge. I'm not kidding. There really were this many issues. There were obvious infertility and other genetic issues. I emailed the company twice with no response. I do know how to hatch eggs and am very knowledgable on fertility, egg structure, etc, as I have hatched many shipped eggs, so this is not a review based out of ignorance. It has nothing to do with the PO, but has everything to do with sending out a defective product from a breeder/hatchery with flock management issues.

Ordered 2 Black Copper Marans May 2012 with an assortment of other breeds. They both died one within a day the other 2 days later. All the other breeds survived to adulthood. I think it was a weak batch. I have received 2 other chicks in the past with deformities that were not as noticeable until they were feathering out. I spoke to them about the 2 copper m's that died and they only offered to replace one, but not the shipping.

ordered 15 day old chicks...and was very impressed! Chicks were mailed in a box with a "nest" built in the bottom to keep them warm. I highly recommend MPC! I ordered 8 assorted chicks from them about a month ago with a hatch date of Sept. 4th. They shipped out of the hatchery at 4:00 p.m. on the 4th and were in my hands in CA just after noon the next day. Not even 24 hours! They were all healthy and active and took to eating and drinking immediately. They are now a month old and are thriving. This company's customer service is outstanding, they are extremely friendly and very helpful. Chicks are easy to raise but do have a few important requirements. MPC's web site has a wealth of info on this topic and much more. They make it easy for even first time chicken owners to get started and be successful raising a flock.

I ordered 5 female chicks with a hatch date of May 14, 2012. They arrived amazingly healthy, happy and beautiful May 15, 2012. I was impressed with the quality of packing, and the chicks themselves were exactly what I wanted and they've exceeded my expectations. The Wyandottes are exceptionally beautiful, and the two EE's are wonderful. I have yet to discover a "fault" in any of the birds I received, and at 3.5 months they are big, healthy pullets. I could not be more satisfied with this company.

I ordered six Buff Orpington chicks for delivery on July 24, and all arrived in good shape - healthy, active. However, I decided to wait until they were a month old to post a review, thinking I could provide more accurate comments then. I'm happy to report that all the girls are still doing great. The customer support folks at My Pet Chicken provided prompt, helpful replies to my queries, and the quality of the chicks was first-rate. I look forward to ordering from My Pet Chicken again.
