Cucumis sativus
This variety is vigorous, early, and has vines that can get quite large. Fruits are large, green, and up to 12 inches long and 3 inches wide with a starburst pattern on the blossom end. The texture and flavor are crisp and mild without bitterness and fruit holds well on the vine or up to 1-2 weeks after picking. Early season fruits often lack mature seeds, so this variety may be partially parthenocarpic, potentially a good choice for greenhouse gardening or where bee populations are low. Use for fresh eating or pickling. The original seeds were a gift of friendship and peace, given to Debbie Premus, biologist and hobby gardener, in Moscow in 1991. They were from Irina Bagmout and son, Valery, friends who graciously allowed the opportunity to visit their country at a time when it wasn't easily accessible to Western tourists. Irina was originally from the Russian town of Bryansk where she grew these seeds annually in her dacha garden for many years. Although there is currently a "Zozulya F1" hybrid variety commercially marketed in the Russian Federation, this particular strain is an open-pollinated garden-to-garden variety and has been breeding true-to-type for the 20+ years that it's been grown in the USA.

Cucurbita pepo
Garden-to-garden strain of an old Russian heirloom known for its excellent table and keeping qualities. The pumpkins are orange with an overlay of green stripes, somewhat flattened in shape, and about 10 - 15 pounds. The flesh is thick, dense, and yellow-orange with a hollow seed cavity and hard shell. The name handwritten name on the original envelope translates to "almond" which describes the hint of almond flavor of this sweet pumpkin variety. In our garden, Mindalnaya has been an early pumpkin ripening fruits in about 90 - 100 days from transplant. Mindalnaya has been a reliable, excellent producer in Southwest Ohio.

Solanum lycopersicum
This variety has a rich, complex flavor typical of black tomatoes with a excellent balance of acidity and sweetness. This variety is similar to Black Sea Man in appearance, deep purplish-brown with green shoulders, but with an indeterminate growth habit and sweeter fruit. It's been a reliable, heavy producer in Southwest Ohio where I've been maintaining it. The name handwritten name on the original envelope transliterates to "Burye" which means "brown" in Russian. In our garden, Burye has been a good mid-season tomato producing well throughout summer.

Solanum lycopersicum
Old Russian heart-shaped heirloom tomato with regular-leaf wispy foliage and moderately compact growth habit. Fruits are large, pink, and meaty with green shoulders and an outstanding balance of sweetness and acidity. The name handwritten on the original envelope translates to "Bull's Heart" although Irina also verbally referred to this strain as Kolun which translates to "Clown." This strain also occasionally produces black fruit on plants which seem to be identical in all respects except fruit color which may be why Irina also referred to it as Kolun. Both the pink and black fruits have outstanding table quality.

Solanum lycopersicum
Chernyi Princ is a moderately-sized, regular leafed Russian heirloom that produces a heavy crop of juicy, black beefsteak-type fruits that often exceed 1 lb. The flavor is outstanding and is best described as deep, rich, complex, and smoky with the perfect balance of acidity and sweetness. This strain does not keep long after picking, but is a delight when taken fresh from the garden. The original seeds were a gift of friendship and peace, given to Debbie Premus, biologist and hobby gardener, in Moscow in 1992 while attending the Pushkin's Institute of Russian Language. They were from Dr. Tatiana Mikhaevich, a Leningrad Biologist interested in the study of bryozoans who initially made contact with one of Debbie's college professors who was considered an expert in this area. The name handwritten name on the original envelope translates to "Black Price" and is believed to be the true Russian strain which is different in size, flavor, and appearance from tomatoes commonly marketed under the same name in N. America. Chernyi Princ is a reliable, heavy producer in Southwest Ohio.
